Warning: Spoilers
This episode shows the best in more selfish characters and the worst in the purest. A lot of people misunderstood the Abed plot line, it isn't just to make chemistry. Abed finally reached his boiling point and it's incredibly interesting. Chang's plot line was amazing and Jeff and Duncan's was strangely emotional. For once I genuinely felt bad for Britta, this season has been knocking it out of the park and the next two have been just as good. If I like these this much, I'll probably enjoy S6 and am very excited to see what they do next.

Dan Harmon's imprint is on this for sure, and this episode ain't for laughs mostly.

Anyway, the Shining reference really sent chills down the spine for sure. Anyway, in this episode it's time for Hickey to butt heads to Abed, and get under his skin for sure.

Good lord that was depressing.

Warning: Spoilers
Community has always been a show that carefully balances genuinely heartfelt moments with sophisticated (and occasionally just plain silly) comedy. Sometimes, they go from heartfelt to straight up depressing. This can be seen in season 2's "Mixology Certification" where the gang goes to a bar to celebrate Troy's 21st birthday, and have a less than pleasant time. That episode was particularly sad, as there was no real happy ending. This episode is a lot like "Mixology", in that many of the goofy comedic moments were traded in for heartbreaking moments. The scene where Abed is pretending to be Kickpuncher without Troy is possibly one of the saddest things the show has ever done. And yet, in the midst of all this sadness, there were some great jokes sprinkled throughout, the shot at Dane Cook and Chang's ghost storyline being my personal favourites. The great thing about Community is that it's not afraid to have real emotion in its stories, something that makes this episode a personal favourite, and one that is surely going to go down as one of the series best.

I never realized how not good parts of season 5 are

Warning: Spoilers
6 is awful. 4 was actually decent...some good stuff in it. Some dreadful as well, but it still FELT like community.

I never realized how uncommunity the show is after Troy leaves. I don't usually buy into the whole...show goes downhill etc after an actor/character leaves... but here, it isn't just Troy leaving... it's that Abed is not the same when it's Troy and Abed. Abed is either different...or feels/comes across different without Troy. Troy gives Abed legitimacy...but without him, he's just weird.

I love Jonathan Banks, especially for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul... but he does not fit here...his character does not fit here... and him pairing up with Abed in this episode....this isn't community.

I've seen this episode a number of times, and it never really hit me that this episode really feels like season 6 episodes...which were really bad. It took me seeing season 6 three times, and then revisiting this season 5 episode to see how much it comes across like a season 6 and not a season 4 episode.

Yes..having Dan Harmon back is good...but season 5 is completely different not just cuz Chevy and Troy are gone... but bc whatever would have happened in season 4 with Harmon....didn't happen. And thus...Season 5 is affected by the lack of Harmon. Once Harmon left...show went off in a different trajectory. Chevy...different trajectory. Troy...different trajectory.

I like the Harmon/Chevy/Troy etc Community. Mess with that, and the show isn't the show. Much like News Radio post Phil Hartman. Whatever it was that I loved...the recipe changed. That mix was off. The previous episodes in this season had hints of something ominous...but this episode is indicative of where the series goes from here. (Though ass crack bandit is excellent. And the more I see the lava episode, the more I appreciate it)

Oh...and aditya_superspeed giving this a 10 out of 10...get out of here. I hate when people are way too liberal with their ratings. Yeah...Michael Jordan is a 10. And so is Kobe. And so are other hall of famers. But yeah...even the guys who averaged 3 points a game...they're a 10 too, bc I don't use the rating system as a barometer for ranking things as better than others. Everyone's a winner. I love all my children equally. It's absurd. Is Aditya trying to say that this episode and Remedial Chaos Theory are both on the same level?! STFU. One episode deserves a 10 bc it is amazing tv. This episode on the other hand is mediocre at best...and that is being overly jealous.

Absolute mess
daisyisabaker6 February 2021
There's absolutely no coherence in the storytelling of this episode. It's obviously not the same without Troy, the scenes where he's supposed to be are just weird now. Abed was horrible, self-centred and so ignorant in this episode, I agree with Hickey. I would have been more angry at Abed.

The whole Chang plot about him being crazy is just boring now. We get it, the producers are racist and they think all Chinese men are mentally insane... New story please ..

Was it that good?

Warning: Spoilers
In retrospect, having recently watched this episode for the second time, I'm not sure if it was really that good. With Troy's absence, Abed's hunt define some kind of balance in life is an interesting angle with a terrible execution. Meanwhile, Britta's activism has been on the backburner for a very long time, so it's kind of interesting what they've done to bring it back into the forefront, Duncan and Jeff fighting over Britta, Chang's crazy escapade are just mediocre. However, there was an absolute fabulous post credit sequence featuring the Dean and Duncan and that more than made up for the lack of humor across the rest of the episode. 4/10.
