- Damon's plan causes a huge explosion in Mystic Falls, and everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair.
- Caroline sobs next to Stefan's dead body. She brought him to the Whitmore dorm. Damon and Elena show up.
On the Other Side, ghost Stefan feels the pull of whatever is dragging souls away. He's about to be sucked out into oblivion when good ol' Lexi shows up and grabs him. "It looks like I've saved you from both metaphorical darkness and actual darkness -- I think you owe me a beer," she says.
Later, Damon rages at Bonnie when he learns that her Traveler spell option was sucked away. Ghost Enzo shows up and announces he has a plan, but he needs a witch.
On the road out of town, Liv and Luke are intercepted by Elena and Caroline. Elena explains their hope to kill a lot of Travelers to make the spell work. Liv thinks they can't risk angering their coven by helping them. And then sweet Caroline zips over to Luke and snaps his next. "There, your brother is officially on Other Side. Think you can risk it now?" she says.
In Mystic Falls, Liz Forbes is helping evacuate the town as Markos watches people leave. Markos has had the Mystic Falls town sign moved to where the spell stops.
Markos' henchmen pull Tyler out of a van and Markos explains that he's Julian and on the other side of the spell he'll be a boy with a werewolf gene who happened to break his neck.
Liz can only watch at they drag Tyler into the town limits and he slowly regresses without the powers of a vampire or hybrid. His fangs come out, his skin burns in the sun and finally his neck snaps.
Back at Whitmore, Bonnie feels Luke pass through her. Then Tyler appears. Bonnie is excited to see that he's actually Tyler and his Passenger is gone. She tells him they can bring him back.
At Whitmore, Jeremy walked the border of the town to determine where the spell ended. He, Matt and Damon conference with Caroline and Elena out on the road with Liv.
They plan to have Liz get the Travelers to gather somewhere at 7p.m. then Jeremy and Matt will break a gas line and head out of town. When it explode, the resurrection spell will start.
On The Other Side, Lexi and Stefan wander into the Grill. Lexi raises the subject of Caroline and then can't believe how clueless Stefan is to the suggestion of her. They notice Liz come in with Markos, suggesting he gather his people. They can tell something is up.
Jeremy talks to Bonnie, who tells him to go be a younger, hotter Bruce Willis. She explains that when the Travelers die they'll overwhelm the Other Side and all the people they love should be able to push through. He's unclear on what that means for her, but she leaves it at she'll stop being the anchor.
Enzo's Traveler friend arrives. At first Bonnie thinks it's Stefan, but it's Silas, the person who killed her father. Silas is planning to hitch a ride back as well.
Lexi and Stefan continue searching for Alaric, wondering if maybe he found peace. They make a pact to find peace together if they don't end up making it back.
Back near Whitmore, Silas teaches Bonnie the resurrection spell. When Liv and Elena arrive, Bonnie says the Traveler is a moody old lady.
In the caves under the city, Jeremy and Matt wander around to find the gas line. Matt likes the idea of a town without blood thirsty vampires and blood sacrifices, but Jeremy points out that would mean the end of Bonnie, too.
At the Grill, Liz has successfully gotten all the Travelers to gather with the promise of free food and drinks. She tries to make her excuses to leave, but Markos cuts her off and insists she stay, with the 7 p.m. detonation deadline just 18 minutes away.
Outside the city, Damon breaks the news to Elena that someone has to trigger the explosion. She tries to convince him not to go on a suicide mission, talking about their future together, but he reminds her that if it goes according to plan, he'll come back to her. He tells her to respect his choice, throwing her old line back at her.
On the Other Side, Bonnie is ready to perform the spell, and the sucking vortex is gathering steam. Bonnie is talking to Enzo when he's dragged backward. She grabs him as the vortex starts sucking up Silas. Silas reaches for her, but Bonnie puts her hand down and lets him go.
At 7 p.m., Liv starts chanting as ghost Luke watches.
Jeremy and Matt break the gas line under the Grill and run.
Bonnie stands over the grave of her Grams, waiting for her. Grams tells Bonnie that all the people going through her will overwhelm her and even when it's over, Bonnie will still be the anchor. Bonnie tells her Grams to pass through her when the spell begins, but instead Grams says she's staying and is making a sacrifice to protect Bonnie. They hug good-bye.
In the Grill, Liz is stuck with Markos who accuses her of being up to something. She asks him if he smells gas and then leads him to the storage room to investigate. When he kneels down to sniff, she whacks him with her gun and text Damon to go now.
Outside the city limits, Damon has a drink, gearing up to crash into the Grill. Elena joins him, telling him to respect her choice. He reminds her she'll revert back to the night she turned and drown all over again, but she's all in. They take off for town.
Elena starts choking as Damon is driving full speed into the Grill, racing so they die while they're still vampires. She turns to tell him she loves him, but he knows. They crash into the building and it ignites.
Out in the woods, dozens of Travelers approach Bonnie and pass through her. Elena and Damon find her next. She tells them to pass through her, find their bodies on the Other Side and come back quickly.
On the Other Side at the scene of the crash, Elena sees her charred remains -- and Alaric standing next to her. She doesn't have time to catch up as he warns her to rush back to Bonnie while he finds Damon.
Damon wakes up on the Other Side but sees Liz on the ground. Alaric finds him. "Friendly advice, when you get the girl, don't blow her up," Alaric says.
Liv keeps chanting and Luke sees that it's hurting her. On the Other Side, he rushes to Bonnie and passes through. He goes to his sister and tells her to stop, but she says she made a promise. Stefan, Tyler, Enzo and Lexi wait to pass through, hoping Damon and Elena will show up.
Enzo goes next, walking by Caroline with a "hi, gorgeous" on his way back to live. Tyler is next, but immediately notices something different. He cuts his hand and doesn't heal -- he's not a hybrid anymore.
Bonnie urges Lexi and Stefan to pass through her before it's too late, but they want to wait. When Elena runs up, she doesn't want to go without Damon either, but Bonnie grabs her and forces her through.
Bonnie starts coughing up blood and falls. When Stefan catches her, he passes through, too.
Elena freaks out thinking that Damon won't make it. Bonnie assures her she can handle it.
On the Other Side, Lexi sees what all the people passing through are doing to Bonnie. Lexi hesitates. Markos shows up and tries to force his way through to Bonnie, but Lexi tackles him and stops him long enough for the vortex to suck him away.
With Markos gone, Bonnie extends a hand to Lexi, telling her it's her turn. But Lexi sees that every person through brings Bonnie closer to death. "What kind of best friend would I be if you died before Stefan got her brother back?" Lexi asks. She opens herself up to the vortex, announcing that it won't get her.
Damon and Alaric finally find Bonnie. Alaric goes through as Damon pauses to find out where Elena is.
Luke has finally had enough of his sister being affected by the spell and chants another to stop her.
Damon is ready to pass through Bonnie, but it doesn't work.
Realizing something has gone wrong, Elena goes looking for Liv and finds she's gone. Elena is desperate to find her and start the spell again, but Bonnie tells her it's too late. Elena collapses sobbing. Bonnie tells her Damon is there and she can say good-bye.
Caroline goes to sit with Stefan, who is reeling from losing the two people he's known longest in the world -- Lexi and Damon. He knows she must be the reason Markos didn't make it through. Stefan says Damon finally had everything he wanted and was happy.
Elena ugly cries, begging him not leave her. He tells her she was the best thing to ever happen to him and the fact that he gets to die knowing he was loved by her is the epitome of a well-lived life.
He says good-bye as she keeps crying for her to come back.
Bonnie calls Jeremy, telling him that there was never a way for her to come back. She didn't want to change their last time together by telling him. She tells him she died the day of graduation and everything since has been a gift. She says good-bye.
Alaric finds Elena sobbing over Damon and hugs her.
They both hear Jeremy screaming for Bonnie as he races toward them.
On the Other Side, Bonnie and Damon feels the ground shake underneath them. "This place is going down isn't it?" Damon says.
She knows there are a thousand other people they'd both rather be with, but they take each other's hands as the light gets brighter and they wait for whatever is coming. "Think it'll hurt?" Bonnie asks. "I don't know-" Damon says, and then he's cut off by the bright white light.
