Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those tales of poverty and misdirection. An eleven year old boy is at the center of this episode. It begins with him being chased by a man and a woman. He lives with his mother who is an alcoholic and who has a sort of checkered life. She has little or no control over him, but she does love him. His father is a convicted felon. She is hostile and filled with anger. We find out that this boy is in the midst of the drug trade. Or it would seem so. He has supposedly been kidnapped, but there appears to be more to the story than that. Annie is back. For me, the viewer, she is quite tiresome and a bit disloyal.

DS Annie Cabbot returns to this gripping season 3 opener

Warning: Spoilers
This review relates to parts 1 and 2 of this impressive season 3 opener.

One aspect of DCI Banks I like is the rolling greens of the Yorkshire Dales, and the opening scene has DCI Banks hosting a barbecue for his colleagues at his lovely place in the countryside. DS Annie Cabbot turns up with her newborn, and you can see the tense atmosphere between her and DI Helen Morton (Caroline "Doc Martin" Catz).

I haven't read the novel, but all credit to the creator/author and scriptwriter for their impressive work and the twist at the end which completely upended the motives of Jimmy Chivers (Geoff Bell in an incredible performance) and Paul Cain (John Lightbody, who was in a couple of Midsomer Murder episodes). I never saw the ending coming.

We see DCI Banks having a paternalistic attitude to DS Cabbot's return from maternity leave, and also DS Cabbot's travails with her eldest son who is facing expulsion from school for being a bookmaker.

Wednesday's Child: Part 1
Prismark1026 July 2021
DS Cabbot returns to work after maternity leave.

There is potential for friction with DI Helen Morton.

However both are in action soon. DCI Banks investigates the case of 11-year old Kyle who has been abducted by a couple posing as social workers.

His mother Katy is a glamorous single mother. His father is a well to do businessman but he has been in jail.

Banks fears the worse especially when a body of a dead boy is discovered.

Morton who has issues with his own teenage son thinks that Katy has something to hide.

This story shows that County Lines is nothing new. DCI Banks looks at the dark underbelly of a northern town. Feral kids who might be dealing in drugs.

Was Kyle abducted or is it all staged? Even the kidnappers seem to have an agenda.

This was certainly an intriguing opener for the third series.
