Really Good Anime In Every Aspect!
mercfma5 July 2014
I really enjoyed this show(note I've watched the sub of this), it had every aspect you look in an above average anime. It was very, very funny(the ova was really funny as well). Their is a very cool storyline and ability concept that does very good with moderate action throughout the show and there's also a very faint bit of romance. The characters really make this show, each one is completely unique and you grow to love them all even in a short 12episodes. The art and music are very appealing and fit the eye and ears very nicely. I have high expectations to the English dub of this!

Overall: 4.5/5. Why not 5/5? Well its kinda your typical shounen anime, but that doesn't mean that its not worth the watch. Its still very well made and a really fun watch that i think anyone would really enjoy. But i think its still missing that "Umph" that gives a really good anime that hook that makes it stand out from the typical to an outstanding, i have hopes that they'll find that spark in season 2 or the upcoming chapters of the manga(its still ongoing in japan as of this post).

P.S. Their is only 1 OVA episode released as of this post.

Good enough
PennyReviews21 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This anime takes most of its credits from its solid characters. Not only the MC was likable and funny, as well as skillful with the sword, but also the side characters, like Yuki, who was cute but also had major character development and his story lead most of season one, and Hiyori, who was the female touch of the trio and mostly the motherly figure \ voice of logic. The other characters of the anime were good as well, but the recipe for success were the main three ones. Other than that, the story is pretty interesting, as well as action packed. The art was so so (could have been better) but it worked for the light mood that the anime wanted to present first. Finally, season two, though it was more Yato driven, left some questions yet to be answered. So, 8 out of 10.

It is definitely underrated!
mge_x23 March 2020
I am a huge fan of Bleach, Ruroni Kenshin, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Erased and Another. I have watched many anime series such Tokyo Ghoul, Ajin, Higurashi, Fate/Stay Night, etc. they are all great but none of them gave me the joy and satisfaction that my favorites gave. And then Noragami did!!! The characters and the story resemble Kenshin and Bleach sometimes. I don't understand why Noragami is underrated and ended. It made me laugh, think and feel. Manga is still going on but the tv series aren't which is a huge loss for anime world. I strongly reccommend Noragami to all anime lovers. PS: OVAs/OADs are average.

Very Fresh Anime
karatekid113815 May 2015
This is an excellent show and easily the best anime I've seen this year at the time of writing. The story is very well developed and deep, without making the mistake of taking itself too seriously. The main characters are immediately likable and you feel like you know them incredibly well after just 12 short episodes. Two of the best things about this show besides the story are the art style and music. The animation looks fantastic and each of the main characters seem to just sparkle against the darker background of a typical Japanese city. Meanwhile the music is really cool and has an indescribable flare to it. All of these things contribute to making this just a great show that you won't be able to stop watching once you start - I finished it in one day. And the best part is, Season 2 has been announced! Really looking forward to seeing more of Yato and friends.

The only complaints I have with this show are the disappointing romance and some of the action scenes. Their is some limited romance throughout the show that is hinted at but it never really develops in the first season. They could be setting it up for season 2, but don't expect too much romance in season 1. As far as action scenes, the fighting in this show is pretty great, but most of the phantoms Yato fights go down in one good hit. Things get a little more interesting when Yato fights with other gods, but the final fight of season 1 feels a little rushed and underwhelming. These are minor complaints and I'm sure some people will barely even notice them because the rest of the show just carries you along for such a great ride.

Overall, I really recommend this anime, especially if you've been having trouble finding a good show recently. Trust me, this is exactly what you need.

Best anime in a very very long time.
AnimeMilkMan26 March 2014
I can't tell you how amazing this show is! I highly recommend it to any fan of Japanese animation you will not be disappointed if you enjoy shows like bleach. Because this show has many similarities to bleach like it's strangely quirky characters and its dark and somehow comedic writing...

Right now as I write this there has only been one full season which I have watched all of there has been no announcement on if there was going to be a second one or not but either way this is such an amazing show that even if the story is never fully completed I highly recommend you watch it anyway!

PROS: Amazing animation, Great story, Lovable characters and epic action! CONS: The season ends...

It's good I guess
opfershamer12 September 2021
I watched this show in 6th or 5th grade & remembered really liking it. Since I've been on a spree of rewatching shows I used to like I rewatched Noragami, unfortunately it was not as good as I remembered it to be but since I started it finished it. Don't get me wrong it's not a bad show It just didnt live up to my expectations I had set up for it since I watched it when I was younger so I think I just over hyped it up for myself ☹

Noragami

Every episode is so good even if you prefer dub over subtitle. this anime is surly worth the watching. It made me laugh, shed tears, and have a connection with every second and minute. This anime gives great balance between living and action. I would say gives that feeling of enjoyment and hope. It truly has you on the edge of your chair, bed and even if your watching it from your hand held device saying things out loud in public because your so caught up in the moment and everyone looks at you weird kind anime cause its just that good.

Info: I came across this anime buy accident well looking for another anime on Hulu. Undoubtedly I immediately noticed the cover, soon after reading the paragraph it looked and sounded pretty interesting. Well at the time they only had two episodes for season one but had the whole season for season two. weird? any who, just after those two episodes I was super hooked on this show. I watched the rest of season 1 online then the rest of season two on Hulu.

Its watchable and entertaining, but It's also full of plot holes and open-ended story threads. It started off great but became senseless and pointless.

For teens and adults to enjoy
TVpotatoCat8 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched many Animes. Many had better ratings, many were much more popular and many of those I didn't like. Actually, unlike in my teens I liked almost none. This is why it was such a surprise when I found this relatively anonymous gem. It's in none of the "must watch anime" lists, it's not recommended in any Youtube videos, and basically I came across it completely by accident.

It seems that the hiatus leading to season 3 caused the worst nightmare of a god to occur: it has been forgotten.

The series follows the life of a god who dreams of getting famous, his weapon (a kid), and of a girl who is by unfortunate luck had her life intertwined with theirs. Unlike in many other Animes the character's interaction and feelings are very believable, pleasant and logical. The friendship between them evolves slowly and steadily.

The god, Yato, seems like a silly and dreamy teen but hides a dark and bloody past which makes his character hard to crack. Him, Hiyori and Yukine get themselves into a lot of drama by simply trying to live day by day while getting used to each other. All that drama is mixed with a bunch of humor which makes this series light and fun to watch.

Me and my husband enjoyed watching it very much.

Why is it rated so high
masonfewel20 April 2021
I was able to watch half the show before I had to stop. "Why didn't you finish it, it's so good!" Because I wasn't enjoying it! There's no point in watching a show if only half of it is good! Nothing about this grabbed me, the characters are pretty bland, their relationships are ill-defined and not fun to watch, and the animation does it no favors. I'm not saying this is the worst show ever, but I have no idea why it is rated so highly.

Best anime ever seen
alenahasbrouck15 July 2015
This anime was amazing. I had recently started watching anime and when I found this one, I loved it so much. It was very funny but also had a bit of a dark side which I enjoy. It does suck that there was only 12 episodes but it was worth it. Every time I watched I, I would smile. If you enjoyed this, watch Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online, if you have seen those two, watch this! It is amazing! It had lots of action and jokes for many ages. It was cute and dark at the same time. I would highly recommend this to any beginning anime watcher or advent watcher. One of my favorites and I hope it continues and gets a second season. It truly deserves it.

Quite a funny anime
Irishchatter6 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say, this anime was really funny to watch like you'd never think a "God" character would dress up in a tracksuit, only grants wishes at 5¥ (4c in euro) and has a phantom schoolgirl sidekick who really goes over the top with him. Although I say the pair of them like each other somehow ;)

Really loved the fighting scenes including involving Yato's Regalia Yukine who was his badass sword throughout! I also liked Hiyori and her tail like it is so cute on her!

8/10 this anime deserves!

That second season
kwesib-321798 August 2020
The first season started slow. In fact the first season focused too much on creating a drama for Yukine. I'm not saying that's bad, of course the drama is good after all this anime successfully shows how it's characters are totally human, with the exclusion of the paranormals. But, we wanted equally more action and fights as well. There still some great parts as even the last three episodes were a bang. However, even if you don't really enjoy the first season, don't give up for there's a Champaign in the bouquet for season 2. The sequel season for Noragami is one of anime best sequels ever. It totally looked and felt better for the show. Immediately, from the first episode a brilliant arc was created. The remaining half of the show will seem confusing but continue to the last episode and everything will be clearer. For those criticising because of plot holes, I mean that's why there's an upcoming 3rd season. There's no wrong if it ended on a cliffhanger. Just wait for the third patiently. 7.9 is still underrated for such a great show like this.

There's a Girl That Rides a Lion So That's Cool
urgentneptune5 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Noragami

Recently, I've been watching more and more anime. So far I've seen some of the highly recommended ones (SAO, AOT, etc.), but this month I watched an anime that I knew nothing about.

The show's called Noragami, which means (I think) "Stray God."

I thought it was quite good, and I'm here to give you my thoughts on the first and only season that premiered in early 2014.

Story

Noragami's world is one full of gods and creatures called phantoms, both of which exist between planes of existence.

The "stray god" that also happens to be the main character in this show is Yato. Yato is a poorly dressed, goofy, and unpopular delivery god who is desperate to gain popularity and eventually build his own shrine.

Another main character is Hiyori, a girl who after being hit by a bus becomes half-human/half-phantom.

She has a pink tail.

Phantoms, by the way, are spirits from the "Far Shore" (basically the afterlife) that like to influence the minds of humans, normally in negative ways.

The final main character is Yukine, Yato's Regalia.

What's a Regalia you ask?

Well, funny you should ask. Regalias are "pure" spirits that have not crossed over to the "Far Shore." Once bound to a master, Regalias take a human-like form until called upon for battle. When this happens, the Regalias transform into weapons, clothing, and lions… I guess…

I'm sure I at least got some of that wrong. I apologize for my very limited understanding behind the magic of Regalias.

Anyway, Yukine is kind of a punk, and as it turns out, when you act like a punk, your master pays the price, that price being death…. eventual death.

Yes, as Yukine becomes more and more… terrible, Yato's health decreases, which makes combating the many, many, people that Yato has angered very difficult.

That's all I'm gonna say about the plot, because anymore might spoil some stuff. Let's just say that the story is diverse. Sometimes it's serious, sometimes it's funny, and it's always good.

Art Style

Noragami's art style is all about contrast. Most of the backgrounds are dull, dark colors, while the main characters and phantoms are colorful. The three main characters' eyes are bright colors (blue, pink, and orange) that kind of match their personalities.

It's a pretty show.

Voice Acting

At the moment, there is no dubbed version of this show. So I watched it in Japanese.

I don't speak Japanese…. So I guess that's all I've got to say…

Action

There are some cool fight scenes in this show, but for the most part, Yato kills phantoms in one slice. When Yato actually fights other gods, however, the action increases and some memorable scenes ensue.

But the final fight scene with Rabo could have been a lot better. Just sayin.

Award Time!

Best Episode: Where Happiness Lies

Best Regalia: The Lion that exists for no reason

Conclusion

Noragami is my favorite anime of 2014… mostly because it's the only anime that came out in 2014 that I watched.

But it's still good! I give Noragami an 8/10.

Watch it and enjoy.

Noragami effortlessly executes each of its components flawlessly
Mysterygeneration16 January 2024
We have all encountered that one book, series, or show that seemed to be unsure about its path. On the other hand, Noragami effortlessly executes each of its components flawlessly. Remember that because this is my first review, whatever I say next could be extremely prejudiced or simply the result of my lack of experience overall. That said, let's get started.

We'll talk about them later. Hiyori, an ordinary high school student, meets Yato, a homeless god, by fate at the beginning of Noragami's story. When Yato unexpectedly gets into traffic, Hiyori, being the angel that she is, moves to be in the way of an approaching bus. This causes her to have an accident and end up in the hospital, but it also gives rise to a somewhat bothersome habit where she loses her physical body and assumes a similar shape, traveling the world as if her spirit has separated from her body. That is, at least, what the show's wide-ranging main plot would have you believe.

The major reason I adore the characters in Noragami is not only that they are all so different from one another, but also that, despite their first appearances, every character appears to have a hint of Hiromu Arakawa about them. While early episodes may give the idea that some characters are one-dimensional, everyone in this series is fully realized and developed.

I really don't have any grievances regarding this. The artwork appears to be appraisingly similar to that of the manga, while the animation is largely in the vein of classic Bones stuff. Every character's design is visually appealing and captivating, ranging from Yato's peculiar scarf and cat-like blue eyes to the lively colors of the personified gods and the giddy Kofuku. The scenery is equally well-executed and detailed, but because the battle sequences are where the animation /really/ pops, I wish there were more of them. (Yato's Rend strike specifically, and mostly because each episode uses this small clip several times.)

The brilliant Taku Iwasaki, who previously produced the OSTS for the well-known films Black Butler and Soul Eater-both of which were renowned for their highly prominent themes ranging from rock ballads and pop to Victorian-era themes-provided the music for Noragami. The majority of the music is upbeat and contains some repeated loops, but it does a fantastic job of setting the mood and never feels out of place. It also occasionally incorporates a few tunes from classical Japanese music, and it never sounds out of place.

Now, Noragami is not flawless, just like anything else out there, even though I'd like to think of it as such. I was never bored or disappointed with this show to a significant degree, despite its flaws. The confirmation that there will be more to come is the only thing that might raise this to a ten. Although the anime concluded well, if a little too quickly, there is still a ton of manga to be animated. One such piece is the /incredible/ arc that centers on Bishamon, Yato's other arch-nemesis from millennia past, but that isn't relevant right now.

Brilliant Plot With Amazing Execution
dbzsupergod11 January 2016
well well well ...! I never expected this anime will be that awesome ... i personally haven't figured out even a single mistake best things :- 1) Great and balanced paced story - unlike SAO (most of em says its kinda like that) its more on a track not and not even in a hurry... you'll never feel odd about the timings 2) Plot - THo it'll be no good to tell what's inside the box but all i can say its has a lots of twist (isn't it?) and flows fluently 3) Characters - Characters are well developed which you can never dislike (except hiyori till episode 8) i can't see anyone whom i really hated 4) Entertainment - the funny moments and action around the battle is just ice on the cake

I personally feels season 2 ( Noragami Aragato ) is better as it has more jokes and battles and season 1 is overall about character developments!

Will i recommend? err definitely! it's a must watch...you won't regret seeing this , Give it a shot yourself :)

Victories are often bittersweet, smiles hide pain as frequently as they reflect joy.
dameon_green3 June 2020
This is a compelling view of the spirit world and the class divide among gods.

A gods power being decided by the number of followers they have is nothing new, however how a desperate god tries to claw himself back up from the bottom can make for a good story. Add in a nice approach to how the lost souls of the innocent can make an impact (or be consumed), the rare living humans who are stuck between worlds and you've stumbled upon a decent anime.

Pros:
  • Good characters and a creative approach to the gods.
  • Surprising amount of heart.
  • Visual attractive animation style.
  • Great music and score.
  • Story arc resolution with hooks for more with each season.
  • Balance of humor and sorrow is excellent.

Cons:
  • Gets crazy silly at times.
  • No 3rd season announced

This is one of the best anime I've ever seen. It has great & very unique story, along with superb background music. It's also comedy from time to time, but has great action and emotions. The series is very short though...awaiting new episodes from the manga. If you're coming from its manga, you'll notice they have missed some details, which should have been told for better understanding.

This is a Must Watch
jdl-0147016 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Noragami & Noragami Aragoto Is a brilliant Anime and a Must watch for any Anime Connoisseurs. The plot of the story follows the entangled lives of two people. Yato a god of calamity and previous war god, and Hiyori Ike a senior girl. The Anime is good because it adds Humour to a otherwise deeper story and plot. You can tell the whole story is very well thought out. The producers of the anime did there homework on actual gods to produce the end product you see on your screen. And far as the sub or dub argument goes I have not watched the Sub, but I've watch the dub and I can attest to its quality and quantity. The combined voices from Jason Liebrecht, Bryn Apprill, and Micah Solusod makes for a master pieces and a instant classic. This Anime is a must watch and a 10/10, an instant Classic.
