While watching the movie 'obhishopta nighty' I was thinking that if I could write this review in ten one liner, - "men know everything except sleeping, but they couldn't express them to a women unless they sleep with her" (it is mine!). Birsa Dasgupta the director of this film and it is his third feature film and for me it is second of him. The previous I had seen was not a pleasure to my eyes and rests of organs were involved to have he comforts of a multiplex theater. Now, this time I must say I liked this movie, there was no such social message, no extra experimental camera work, no intellectual influence of cinematic creativity and above all the story fulfill its own journey in due rotation. Viewers can easily understand the story over laughter. The story, incidents and the characters are implanted so efficiently in a direct proportion with time that Bengali viewers will find a cool movie at last. I found very illogical to write up the summary of the story of the film and the technical judgment which is also beyond my capacity while reviewing a movie. But unfortunately it's an unwanted duty. Monika was a bar singer in 1985 and had an affair with a guy namely raja who was a spoilt brat of a highly influential and rich family. That guy had made love with Monika and accomplishment of his desire he left her with a promise to marry her and get married to a girl of his father's choice. Monika committed suicide and her soul was unsatisfied and created a mess in the present city after 28years (according to the shooting period) approximately through her 'nighty' which she wore at time of her death. Now it is the story of the movie or the story in the film that totally your perception. Now in recent past one thing which always depressed me that so called expected Bengali films were failed to reach their cinematic goal of convey the story to the viewers. 'Obhishapta nighty' at last fulfilled my wish with full pleasure. There were ensemble star cast in the film, and they are fantastic in their job, no need to take some particular name still Paran Bandopadhyay, Kanchan Mullick, Supriya Dutta, Laboni Sarkar, Vaskar Banerjee was awesome, and Birsa Dasgupta utilized them such an effective manner that is really adorable. Locket Chatterjee, Neel Mukherjee, Tanushree Chakraborty, Sumit Samaddar were appropriate and I have to mention Mir especially because of his ability to portray a cliché role such a believable way. Prambrata Chattopaday was the one and only choice for some character and he is excellent in such roles he proved it again. My special attention to Rahul and Priyanka in those tiny and beautiful roles and I always had a hawk eye on Priyanka because of her such an extraordinary simple acting skill.Taju da(Debapratim Dasgupta played a marvelous role in such a short time span and shown his skill. Lastly one thing I have to write whatever the wise people's reaction may be, if there any actor created his aura after Prasenjit Chatterjee He is 'DEV'. I am nowhere to say anything on Shamik Halder's camera work, he was excellent. Indradeep Dasgupta was also very good, the song 'sadher nighty' was just apt for the situation and lyrics of Srijato, - "jekhane thNoter mon jane thNot"
nothing to say. I don't know what you will do with your kids, but I don't think this movie can effect anything more to their up'cum'ing maturity when there are google and Mark Zuckerberg. But you people can obviously go and watch the movie at theaters. I can't say about Quentin Tarentino but those people who raise their nose about Bengali cinema they can smell the 'Pulp fiction' flavor.

Obhishopto Nighty (2014)
This movie is essentially, what in Bangla, we know as 'Machar Natok', i.e. the kind of plays/stand-up comedies you see in college functions/freshers/re-unions with lots of unintentional technical glitches, bad acting and hilarious goof-ups, but you love them if they are well-written. This movie is a mash-up of the kind of skits you see on stage or say in the comedy shows on television.
Kudos to the director for his guts for a) choosing to bring this 'Machar Natok' on screen and b) trying to make an intentionally 'unintentionally hilarious' movie.
There is intentional bad/loud acting, bad editing, absolutely meaningless plots and that also split into numerous chapters and timelines, just to connect the several scenes which are funny in themselves and thankfully funny enough you wouldn't care how they are connected.
If you start nit-picking this movie will be outright offensive to everyone: it's sexist, racist, makes fun of gays, fat women dressed up in nighties and what-not! And to be true there were scenes which I could not comprehend as well and what I thought it meant I just couldn't believe (For instance, seriously what was that thing with the weird 'Shim-bichi kot-kot'!!!) But I say again, this is exactly what happens in college plays. It's Absurd with a capital A and trust me... has no deeper meaning. I mean, if you start looking for 'Surrealism' everywhere, then might I suggest you 'Himmatwala': the deeply surreal and layered movie... This movie might be some satire on some level, a very vague level, but that is not the purpose of the movie for me.
If unsophisticated, unintelligent jokes, riddled with infinitely many innuendos (that are weird, sad, sexual and even repulsive at times) is not your kind of humour, stay away. But if you do, lap it up.
Well, I thrive in stupid puns and lame jokes and 'Macha' is not just a stage, it is a Culture to me: the culture I celebrate every moment of my life in Jadavpur University. So I simply loved it. And I am planning to watch it again.
But, I have to say, making an intentionally 'unintentionally hilarious' movie is extremely difficult, my friend! And there were so many ways this movie could have been bettered. There are moments which drag, where you feel it's too loud for your taste, but thankfully before that feeling sets in any deeper there is some outrageously funny sequence which will jolt you awake! That is why despite the many many many flaws, I have to acknowledge that this is the first of its kind in an an Indian Movie. There has been no such absolute nonsensical, absurd, yet weirdly funny 'Macha' movie ever before in India. And I do sincerely feel that because Birsa is only the director of this movie, I cannot say this is not his movie. This movie truly belongs to Debaloy Bhattacharya, whose story, dialogues and screenplay it is. And he gets the brownies!!!

A brilliant wacky,sleazy,surreal satire that has its heart in the right place..

When the world is full of fakes and there is crisis all around, how do you discover the truth? The wait is to identify the real. The quest is to make way for a change. Director Birsa Dasgupta takes the sleazy, witty path to unveil the truth. The naked truth or real love is not easy in today's world where every next person believes in barter. What if this barter, this craving for the best comes as a boomerang and teaches humanity a lesson? Yes, the grass in greener on the other side until you step into the same wild grass. Maybe the facts are furious but the presentation was too comical. Director Birsa Dasgupta and story writer Debaloy Chatterjee has worked on subversion. Their gesture on screen was simple and sleazy, they have not tried to be sophisticated, not tried to be too urban to suit the taste of some.
Life is raw, so why not present it raw. They have laughed at familial situations, at love and even made a fool of themselves through the subject of censor board. A bizarre nighty makes way to the city and travels homes. Homes that are orthodox, homes that are too conservative, homes that have a newly married couple and homes that have a struggling actress. Life automatically alters the moment the women wear this fuscia piece of lacy cloth. But what next? The nighty conquers the city. It makes way to the headlines and drapes the city in its own colors. The film begins with a sequence happening in 1985 and jumps straight to the present. Every story along the nighty's path remains unresolved. A question keeps lurking on our minds as to what happens to the family after the nighty moves out?
Witty, allegorical dialogs and settings bring a new wave on screen and definitely is a breather in the midst of the ordinary. Director Dasgupta has adopted an excellent scheme of narration in the film, which truly reminds us of graphic novels. The film is divided into interesting chapters and he distinctly sculptors the edges to present each chapter individually. Moving from hook to hook the Obhishopto Nighty (cursed Nighty) finally meets real love. Love that brews between Apu (Parambrata Chattopadhyay) and Brishti (Tanusree).
With a whole gamut of fine actors from Parambrata to veteran actor Paran Bandapadhay to the jester Mir Obhishopto Nighty definitely is a winner. The music of the film is definitely haunting and sets the mood right with the brilliant lyrics. While Birsa Dasgupta deserves a pat for the storybook like format of the narrative Debaloy Chatterjee deserves an extra brownie for the dialogs.
If you cannot digest the pun, simply gulp in the fun. Obhishopto Nighty is a perfect watch for people in relationships, all sorts are welcome. The sleazy humor is tantalizing and leaves a lurking taste for the time to come.

This is absolutely unexpected!!!A bizarre,wacky,eccentric Bengali cinema taking on Bengali hypocrisy and mediocrity by the collar while breaking every rule within scope in the process.Its not that all the references (mostly contemporary) are very intelligent or subtle.Its not that the performances (mostly cameos) are top-notch as in Bhooter Bhobisyat or that the film within film concept of presentation is something never seen or tried before.But as a package the film presents everything in such optimum amount that the end product turns immensely appreciable and enjoyable at the same time.The film is a triumph of crisp writing and spot-on sense of humour.Add to that superb editing,decent acts and quite fine music/background score.A censor board member smoking in frustration,a band singer (in real) singing Md.Aziz song for a Tolly party (I am sold just for the digging out the song "prithibi harie gelo"...),a Rabindrasangeet singer suffering from xtra-thakur affair or a journalist turned down from entering a party for wearing sandals -the lack of authenticity all around is brought out so effortlessly and effectively with the enjoyment quotient maintained throughout.This is coming (cuming) of age Bangla cinema like never before where the heroine finds real love even after a handful of voluntary one night stands while a popular hero looses his reel and real life wife to a 'odiya nulia'."Obhisapto Nighty" will in no way garner audience like Bhooter Bhabisyat did (the RDB afternoon show was cancelled as i could not manage company of 4 more people to watch together). People not familiar with this form of arbid comedy (read Robert Rodriguez brand ) would be mostly confused and consider it crass.But given a chance with open mind this is bound to entertain and even enlighten.Watch it.

Watched this movie back in the year 2014 many times. Simply loved the satire acting cast crew everything of it. But never aware of its imdb rating, just saw the rating and im sorry to say lost faith in todays cinema goers and imdb. Bengal was always known for its intellectual nature. This is an extremely class appealing film. The rating dont give justice to the film.
It is an extremely well made, classy, enjoyable satire. Every art film lover should watch this.
