Prior to Labor Day weekend, I was given the opportunity to interview Nick Antosca who is the creator, showrunner and executive producer of Syfy’s horror television series, Channel Zero. While each season was a different story, I felt it necessary to watch the first season, Candle Cove, since I abandoned ship halfway through the season. As the show was airing on Syfy, I thought Candle Cove was interesting but, personally, I didn’t have much of a connection with the main character and the story seemed pretty basic. What I did think was that the imagery excelled it above something that would be, quite frankly, forgettable. It also seemed pretty unapologetic when it was dealing with a story that heavily involved children, I admired that as well.
I have read maybe a handful of creepypasta stories, which most of them are fabricated, overindulgent urban legends. There will always be...

Horror fans have a lot to look forward to this Halloween season, and Channel Zero: No-End House should be near the top (if not the very top) of their lists. A creepy concoction of suburban scares and dreamlike dread, the second season of the Syfy series features an engaging cast that pulls you into their living nightmare, including Aisha Dee, whose character, Jules, awakens underwater in Room 5 of the No-End House in our exclusive teaser video that Daily Dead readers can watch right now.

After witnessing the premiere screening of Channel Zero: No-End House at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, I can safely say that the series' second season is a must-watch. While you'll have to wait until October to watch the premiere episode on Syfy, you can now watch another brief promo video for the second season of the anthology series.
Directed by Steven Piet (Uncle John), the Channel Zero: No-End House cast includes Amy Forsyth, Aisha Dee, Jeff Ward, and John Carroll Lynch. When Daily Dead and several other journalists spoke with Channel Zero showrunner Nick Antosca back in November of 2016, he had this to say about the second season, which has a different style (but similar creeping dread) than Candle Cove:
"It’s very different stylistically. Candle Cove is an almost pastoral style. It’s very restrained. It’s very composed and there is this sense of lush greenery...

After witnessing the premiere screening of Channel Zero: No-End House at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, I can safely say that the series' second season is a must-watch. Blending elements of It Follows and Halloween with Brian Russell’s unsettling Creepypasta, No-End House is a potent mix of suburban dread and psychological horror that's a worthy follow-up to the Candle Cove storyline of the first season. “It’s six rooms. Each one is scarier than the last.” After traveling to Candle Cove in season 1 of Channel Zero, showrunner Nick Antosca and company will enter a new kind of haunted house in next season’s No-End House (based on Kris Straub’s creepypasta), and another cast member for the show has now been revealed.
According to Deadline, Aisha Dee (Sweet/Vicious, Chasing Life, Dead Gorgeous) plays a key role in Channel Zero: No-End House. Dee portrays Jules, the “stubbornly independent” best friend of Amy Forsyth’s character, Margot Sleator.

"It's six rooms. Each one is scarier than the last." After traveling to Candle Cove in season 1 of Channel Zero, showrunner Nick Antosca and company will enter a new kind of haunted house in season 2. Based on the creepypasta NoEnd House by Brian Russell, the second season of Syfy's horror anthology series is teased in its first trailer ahead of its 2017 premiere.
Channel Zero: No-End House: "This standalone, six-episode anthology series, inspired by Brian Russell’s Creepypasta, features Margot Sleator, played by Amy Forsyth (“The Path”), a young woman who visits the No-End House, a bizarre house of horrors that consists of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms. When she returns home, Margot realizes that everything has changed. John Carroll Lynch (“American Horror Story”) will co-star."
Nick Antosca again serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside executive producer Max Landis. Budding director Steven Piet (“Uncle John”) directed all six episodes.

Giving horror fans enough nightmare fuel to last them until next Halloween, Channel Zero: Candle Cove has cranked up the fright factor to eleven over its first four episodes. Over the past couple of weeks, Daily Dead, along with other journalists, had the opportunity to take part in conference calls with showrunner Nick Antosca, who discussed adapting Kris Straub's unsettling creepypasta, how the show found a home at Syfy, getting Greg Nicotero's help in designing the look of The Tooth Child, and what to expect in season 2, which will focus on Brian Russell's NoEnd House.

Syfy's new series Channel Zero: Candle Cove premieres tonight at 9:00pm Et, but its story may already haunt you. Channel Zero's first season is based on one of the most haunting "Creepypastas," stories published online that use a wide range of narrative styles and multi-media presentations to blur the lines between fiction and reality. Before viewers tune into Candle Cove tonight, we caught up with Channel Zero showrunner Nick Antosca (Hannibal TV series, The Forest) to discuss the six-episode adaptation of Kris Straub's chilling Creepypasta, as well as what viewers can expect from Channel Zero's second season.
Candle Cove is one of the creepiest Creepypasta stories out there. When did you first become aware of the Candle Cove story? Were you a fan of it before coming onto this project?

Thanks in large part to the ongoing success of FX's American Horror Story, horror anthologies have become a hot commodity on TV again, and Syfy's Channel Zero is hoping to cash in on that trend with "Candle Cove," the first season of a new series that takes its inspiration from the internet phenomenon known as "creepypasta." For the uninitiated, "creepypasta" is a term coined to describe user-generated horror stories online that typically take the form of message board posts, and which are later amended and embellished by other 'netizens. Call them digital urban legends. "Slenderman," which later inspired a real-life crime, is arguably the most famous creepypasta. "Candle Cove," written by webcartoonist Kris Straub and based around the eerie concept of a bizarre old children's TV show that was visible only to a small group of children, is another. As for the series, it takes off from Straub's tale to...

That’s right. Hulu.
I’m here to tell you that there’s a cinematic streaming goldmine available on Hulu that includes recent hits, older classics, domestic releases, and foreign imports. It’s even home to hundreds of Criterion titles. Sure there’s plenty of filler and seemingly thousands of titles that can’t possibly be real, but I’m here to recommend some good movies to watch this month on Hulu.
Pick of the Month — Hwayi: A Monster Boy (2013)
South Korean cinema features no shortage of brilliant and brutal action thrillers, but while everyone knows about the likes of I Saw the Devil and Memories of Murder there are more than a few gems that have slipped through the cracks. Jang Joon-hwan’s long overdue follow-up to Save the Green Planet is a fast-moving, creatively violent mix of dark deeds and beautifully choreographed fights and stunts. There’s a wicked sense of humor running through it...

One good sign that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom isn't actually crazy: she's leaving the house without the Golden Globe award she won last month - though she admits the win was the cherry on top of a surreally successful stage in her career. "Someone said I should just carry [my Globe] in a Baby Bjorn as if it came from my womb," Bloom laughed while chatting with reporters at the Writers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, where she served as a presenter. "I should have brought it! That would have been so tacky: I just start bringing the Golden Globe to other award shows.

Filmmaker Steven Piet has worn many hats over the course of his short career. He served as the cinematographer and editor for the documentary Girl Rising, a look at how education changes the lives of nine exploited girls from around the world. He also worked as a second unit crew member for the 2011 Mark Pellington ensemble drama I Melt With You. And that’s about it. Based on his directorial debut, Uncle John, you would think he would have far more credits to his name, as he has masterfully interwoven multiple genres into one tightly crafted, surprising little film.
Co-written by Piet and Erik Crary, the script combines folksy rural thriller, urban rom-com, and indie dark comedy to depict a low-key revenge story involving an elderly man and, ostensibly, his grown nephew. The experiment benefits from the performances of its two leads, veteran character actor John Ashton and promising newcomer Alex Moffat.

The decision to start focusing on ways to get a micro-budget feature off the ground was made before any scripts were ready, and well before "Uncle John" was even conceived. In summer of 2010, we were both freelancing independent of each other, but also pursuing work together when we could get it. That culminated in a bigger way that fall when an opportunity arose for a larger-scale commercial shoot, and we immediately established an LLC to run the job through and crew up. That also began the process of saving what we could from each job in, which went into a kitty committed towards the eventual budget for a film. Leading up to that point, each of us had been writing scripts by ourselves with the express intention of making one of them the first project. As the kitty was slowly growing and we started getting real about those ideas, the...

The extreme struggles a person must contend with in order to keep a mysterious disappearance unsolved, particularly in a small town where everyone is somehow connected to both the perpetrator and the victim, can often be difficult. The process can become even more challenging when even one person becomes suspicious of the criminal and their actions. That’s certainly the case with the beloved and seemingly innocent title character in the upcoming crime drama, ‘Uncle John.’ To showcase the increasing suspicions of John’s adversary, Danny, about John’s involvement in the disappearance of Danny’s brother, Dutch, Shockya has a new exclusive clip from the mystery film, titled ‘The Killer Always Comes Back.’ [ Read More ]

Boy Meets World fans have waited nearly 20 years to find out whatever happened to Mr. Turner. The beloved high-school English teacher/Shawn's mentor/every middle-school girl's crush last appeared on the show in season four's "Cult Fiction," where he got into a serious motorcycle accident. His name was mentioned in passing by Stuart Minkus in the graduation episode (in a pretty meta joke about how both he and Mr. Turner disappeared from the show), but we never quite knew what happened to him ... until now. Mr. Turner made his long-awaited return to to the BMW universe, in a cameo on the show's spinoff, Girl Meets World. Good news: He didn't die! In fact, he married his nurse from the hospital, became a school superintendent in Manhattan, and eventually gave Cory Matthews his teaching job. Cory's daughter Riley even calls him Uncle John. Awwwwww!

Beginning in medias res, Uncle John spins a delicate web of intrigue and mystery. The titular character (John Ashton) is introduced as he's (probably) up to no good, a suspicion that is quickly confirmed for the audience but not for the other characters in the movie. John appears to be quite normal, an older gentleman who meets regularly with his senior-citizen pals at the local diner. He lives on a decent-sized piece of property outside of a small town in Wisconsin; he's friendly and pleasant and otherwise quite forgettable. Meanwhile, a young man in Chicago named Ben (Alex Moffat) works as a graphic designer in a small company. His eyes light up when Kate (Jenna Lyng) joins the company as a middle manager. She's his...

Written and directed by Steven Piet, "Uncle John" follows (as the title might suggest) John (John Ashton) and his nephew, Ben (Alex Moffat). Things heat up as troubling murder allegations swirl around the well-loved John, just as Ben heads into town for the first time in years. Part mystery and part romance, "Uncle John" is Piet's first feature film -- after working in short films, broadcast commercials and music videos, he's branching out. What's your film about in 140 characters or less?Dutch, a small town bully turned born again Christian, has gone missing. John, a loved and well-respected member of the community, is not a suspect, but has everything to do with it. Now what's it Really about?Contrasting worlds that are mere miles away. As we await the start of the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, an eery new trailer for the Steven Piet directed film "Uncle John" has premiered. "Uncle John" centers on the disappearance of a small town bully turned born-again Christian named Dutch. No one suspects John, a well-known and respected member of the community, of anything sinister, except, that is, for Dutch's brother, Danny. John's nephew Ben is eventually wrapped up in the ordeal when he visits the place in which he grew up. The trailer features no dialogue, only imagery and sound to convey the film's eery mood. "Uncle John" will make its debut on March 16 in the narrative competition section of the festival. Watch the tense trailer below. Read More: 6 Highlights From the SXSW 2015 Lineup...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.
SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.
Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...
