I thought I must be streaming the wrong movie
aliceabernathy-700495 February 2020
Wow. I find something to like in just about every movie I watch and after reading the reviews here I thought I really found a winner...I actually had to double check it was the right movie. It's bad. Not good bad just really bad. I have no idea where these 9 and 10 reviews came from. Just wow...

Very inauthentic movie
jtblackledge6 July 2020
If you've ever been to Harlan County, or anywhere else in Eastern Kentucky, you would know that the great majority of people here don't look like these actors or sound like them. I've lived in Eastern Kentucky for 12 years, and if it wasn't for the familiar scenery, I would have no idea where the story is supposed to be set. 9 and 10 star reviews on this site for this movie are laughable. One even compared this movie to Shakespeare. That is wrong on so many fronts.

Really Trying
ronbailey-2142518 July 2020
Sorry folks but you will probably be better off watching paint dry! Not sure what the director was looking for, not sure what I was looking for. Maybe I'll start drinking again and give it another review? My wife still has no clue and she is very kind. Wash your hands, and stay distant!

Glad I sought this movie out. I have seen this story unfold in life and it it paralyzing and soul stealing. The performances are solid and endearing. I hope this film maker will continue to tell stories about how the world is really in control.

Burning the master copy of this movie would help it out
stevojaxon10 February 2020
This movie is uninteresting, poorly edited, boringly scripted and was a waste of my time. I watched it for 52 minutes and I could take no more. Junk food, junk bonds and now this junk movie. This is a 'z' grade female retribution moralistic tale. Waste not, want not and watch not.

Potential delivered in a mess
aeongale8 February 2020
What is this film about? I was asking myself this through the first half. It's about an angry alcoholic father with a dead wife and two sons. One son is relatively normal and the other is junkie. There's some conflict there. It's also about conflict between hillfolk and them fancy people that live in houses. That's about it. Few major problems with this are the frequent and confusing use of cut scenes. It takes a while to determine what is past and present which takes away from the story. There's some well written monologues but in they get cutup. Another problem is too much time, possible equal amount of time is spent on the sub-plot of the junkie son and his lady friend. And then there's pacing, boy it is slow and makes this a hard watch. As mentioned some of the writing is good, acting and production are fine, and the last fifth of the film picks up to close with a satisfying ending, but it's not worth the wait.

Cant believe this won any awards
bkm-782026 February 2020
What a boring negative movie, full of drug addicts and down in the dumps characters. If this is what Kentucky is meant to be like then I wont ever visit it. I must admit I didn't watch it all as I didnt care for the characters. No real character development unless you like depressed people. Ill say it again, "cant believe it won awards"

Rotting Pasts and Quality Storytelling
brhoward21626 July 2019
The darkness of us, our dark acts and rotting pasts juxtaposed against the haunting beauty of Kentucky landscapes. Harlan (my hometown) is the backdrop for a family mystery that unfolds itself like a tired and sad nightmare. Besides some sporadic cliche dialogue and regional stereotypes, this film is a serious piece of artwork directed by a talented woman with a promising future.

A Beautiful and Compelling Kentucky Film
sarahmorg5 February 2020
I was lucky enough to see this amazing film in theatres last July, and it was simply spectacular. Being a Kentuckian, I not only appreciated the beautiful locations chosen for the film, but the stunning cinematography used to emphasize our state's natural beauty. The film tells an intense and twisted love story that is unlike anything I've seen before. I would highly recommend watching this film, as getting to see it was one of the highlights of my summer.

The message to the sotry is nice, this sotry drains enough mind and concentration, if you go to toilet for couple minutes you will lose all. I love the Picture so natural , also supporting cast is good enough.

Good acting on a tricky storyline
robertwright-2965210 February 2020
It covered all aspects of intertwining cultures: ex. Police, clergy, hillbillies, small town folks. Well worth a watch. The actors and actresses rose to the occasion by a great directing staff.

Fake reviews

Obvious fake 10 star reviews. I enjoyed it. But it has a dark indie vibe. Not for everyone.

thestevo-988209 February 2020
Didn't have any idea what I was going to see and I was surprised with how much I liked the film. Excellent pacing through the movie that makes this thriller more suspenseful and shocking as it goes deeper and deeper into the fire.

Thought provoking movie!
bobevanssr-349605 February 2020
This movie makes you watch every moment! It really takes awhile to see what's going on but towards the end if you have been keeping up with what's going on you will see that the storyline makes sense with a moonshiners life! Great movie for a small budget film!

Burning Kentucky delivers on multiple fronts.
WalkerCody-03189928 July 2019
I recently saw this film at the Kentucky Theatre during its Lexington, KY premiere. I can honestly say that after seeing the film, and having a few days to collect my thoughts, that this was a tremendously successful movie. While maintaining a believability and unforced honesty, writer/director Bethany Brooke Anderson crafts a homegrown story that does not lose energy while bouncing back and forth from the multiple personal stories of various Kentuckians. Ending in a tension filled climax, this story delivers an equal amount of "Bluegrass magic" and Hollywood thrills. The folk lore elements present make it something special. Possibly because it tells a story that hasn't been told, in a state that hasn't had the opportunity to truly present itself. This mystic side of the story really works, in part, thanks to a nuanced and understated performance from Emilie Dhir. Dhir brings a patient energy to the screen that is both calming and unsettling. John Pyper Ferguson and Augie Duke deliver powerful performances through their well written and complicated characters. We see them struggle with their internal demons while trapped in the "comfortability" of their longtime home. Overall, I'm so happy that I saw this film and that this story was told. Maybe even more important than its content, is the fact that it exists; serving as a staple for the incoming independent film scene in the state of Kentucky.

WHATEVER YOU THINK THIS FILM HOLDS FOR YOU... IT HOLDS. SO. SO. MUCH. MORE.

Told through an artfully crafted creation by a female filmmaker, this is the story of family revenge, undying love, and raw emotion, set in the naturally breathtaking backdrop of Kentucky. The characters are vivid and enchanting as they weave a masterful web of a truly twisted journey that lingers like mountain fog. Storytelling at it's finest, the look and feel of this award winning epic film is not to be missed.

The best Indie film I've seen
wyfoster4 May 2019
I flew across the country to go to the world premiere of this movie at Mammoth Film Festival.

It handedly beat all the other feature films. The acting, directing, cinematography, and musical score punches so far beyond its weight it is incredible.

Easily one of the best if not the best Indie Film I've seen. I am entirely unsurprised to see the number of awards this movie has won!

Slick, Intense, and Thoroughly Engaging
ggstamper11 August 2019
_Burning Kentucky_ is an indie film slick enough to have been produced by a major studio. With strong acting from all cast members, stunning cinematography of the Kentucky landscape, and a mysterious, engaging plot line, it grabs the viewer's attention in the first frame and doesn't let go until the final credits roll. It provides an intense movie experience which will remind some viewers of the highly touted film, _Three Billboards out of Ebbing Missouri_. Fans of the best-selling novel _Where the Crawdads Sing_ will also find _Burning Kentucky_ enthralling. Put it on your watch list!
