Sony TV is developing an adaptation of the 2005 skateboarding film “Lords of Dogtown” for IMDb TV.
Catherine Hardwick, who directed the 2005 film, will executive produce with Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman.
“Lords of Dogtown” centered on the 1970s skateboarding scene in Southern California. That film starred Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson, Michael Angarano, Nikki Reed, Heath Ledger, Rebecca De Mornay and Johnny Knoxville.
The TV series will be written by Kat Candler and is a one-hour ensemble-drama, centered around a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster-care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team, who were portrayed in the film.
IMDb TV is Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service. The service in recent months has landed the rights to AMC’s “Mad Men” (which it is sharing with AMC in the U.S.) as well as Judge Judy Sheindlin’s upcoming courtroom series.

One of the busiest people in Hollywood just got a little bit busier with a Queen Sugar reunion of sorts. Ava DuVernay and her Array Filmworks have re-teamed with Kat Candler to develop a one-hour drama series for TNT centered on the Texas oil industry.
The latest project out of the sprawling nine-figure overall deal DuVernay inked with Warner Bros Television Group almost a year ago (as Deadline exclusively reported), the untitled series focuses on the fatal aftermath of a Lone Star state refinery accident and one woman’s move to seek justice through an unprecedented labor action.
If you are thinking Norma Rae 2020 for the Warner Horizon Scripted Television project, I’d say you nailed it. DuVernay will executive produce the yet to be named drama with Candler who will write the series.

Capcom’s long-awaited reveal of Project Resistance has finally arrived and early reactions on social media aren’t pretty.
In fact, the spinoff Resident Evil title has been attracting overwhelming negativity from fans over on Twitter, many of which take issue with the game’s departure from single-player survival horror. For the unaware, Capcom revealed the first gameplay of its latest side project at Tokyo Game Show last night, confirming earlier suspicions that it would be taking a crack at the asymmetrical multiplayer genre.
Similar to the likes of Dead By Daylight, Evolve (rest in peace) and Friday The 13th: The Game, Project Resistance is a 4v1 affair that pits four hapless human players against one other – usually antagonistic – player. In this case, the so-called Mastermind has control of several different systems intended to prevent Resistance‘s four survivors from making an escape. Entrenched in Resident Evil lore as it is,...

Kat Candler is set to rewrite and direct Fox Searchlight’s “Splitfoot,” sources tell Variety.
The pic is inspired by a 1936 New Yorker article written by journalist and bestselling author Carl Carmer about the first documented haunted house.
The story follows a jaded reporter who, after having a disturbing encounter that raises the prospect that his dead son may be trying to make contact from the afterlife, travels upstate to New York to a remote town considered the mecca of the American spiritual/occultist movement. As the reporter’s cynicism gives way to the hope of reuniting with his son, he becomes the target of various forces attempting to manipulate him, including one that is much more dangerous than the dead.
Jt Petty wrote the original script with a rewrite by Antonio Campos.
Jeremy Steckler of Condé Nast Entertainment is producing the project and David Greenbaum. DanTram Nguyen will oversee production for Fox Searchlight.

Josh Wiggins is one of those talented actors on the precipice. He’s starred in films such as “Hellion,” “Max” and “Walking Out,” but with the right role, he could go from under the radar indie darling to being hyped alongside peers such as Asa Butterfield, Noah Centineo and Nick Robinson. At this point, the talented 20-year-old just needs a Netflix or studio flick to get him there.

‘Giant Little Ones’ Director Keith Behrman on Defying Labels and Finding Authenticity in Adolescence
One of my favorite things about going to the Toronto International Film Festival is finding the time to see the smaller movies that aren’t on everyone’s must-see lists. While the gamble sometimes turns out to be a dud, the risk is easily justified when you’re able to discover a work as genuinely memorable as Keith Behrman’s Giant Little Ones in the process.
A film about adolescence that isn’t afraid to delve into sexuality’s ever-broadening landscape of experimentation and fluidity with still violent repercussions, this story of two best friends falling prey to the social implications of such puts toxic masculinity in the spotlight. Behrman looks at the herd culture of kids desperate to conform to some archaic ideal before then bullying those who don’t in order to uphold their sense of superiority. And while he focuses mostly upon a boy who’s bearing the brunt of that backlash,...

Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2013 breakout drama “Short Term 12” delivered a heartwarming story with bite. His portrait of a home for troubled teenagers owed much to Brie Larson, who played its passionate supervisor with a mixture of empathy and rage against the flaws of a system designed to improve young people’s lives. It delivered a sentimental message without trumping its characters’ palpable rage and cynicism, and established Cretton as a director capable of generating emotion without pandering.
Cretton still makes that effort with his long-awaited followup, “The Glass Castle,” but with less success. While he has a fascinating story and another stirring Larson performance, the results are minor and decidedly more middlebrow.
Adapted from Jeanette Walls’ memoir, Larson plays the author as she grows up in a wildly dysfunctional household headed by her alcoholic father Rex (Woody Harrelson), who forces the family to live a nomadic, hand-to-mouth existence in...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Tepid teen romance turned implausible thriller is just about saved by a powerful, and unusually disturbing, performance from Bill Paxton (one of his last). I’m “biast” (pro): love Bill Paxton
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Alas that the most interesting thing about Mean Dreams is that it is the second-to-last performance from Bill Paxton that we will ever get, and a doozy of a performance at that. (Paxton will also appear in The Circle, opening wide in the Us in April, which I have not yet seen; I don’t think any critics have.) Alas for Paxton fans (I am a huge one); alas for The Movies, which will no longer enjoy the understated appeal of his solid presence; and alas for this particular movie, that he makes the rest of it look just...

"I wouldn't get too attached to that boy..." An official international trailer has debuted for an indie film titled Mean Dreams, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year (in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar) and also played at the Deauville Film Festival and Tiff. The stylish romantic thriller is about Casey and Jonas, two teens desperate to escape their broken and abusive homes after falling in love. This stars Sophie Nélisse as Casey and Josh Wiggins (from Hellion, Max) as Jonas, along with Bill Paxton and Colm Feore. I caught this film at Cannes last year and it's solid, an enjoyable and thrilling story about young lovers. The lead performances are outstanding, making the film better than it really is. Worth a look. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Nathan Morlando's Mean Dreams, direct from YouTube: Mean Dreams is a thriller about a fifteen-year-old boy who steals...

There’s a Catch-22 for indie film directors trying to break into television. To direct, episodic television networks and showrunners often require previous experience working in television, which is impossible to get if no one will hire you. It’s an experience barrier that is most often pointed to when Hollywood tries to explain how few minority and female directors there are working in TV.

Over the decades, the silver screen has been filled with dauntless canines such as Shiloh, Toto, Lassie, Benji and Beethoven.
Now comes the tale of Max.
A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the frontlines in Afghanistan alongside his handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. But when things go terribly wrong on maneuvers, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service.

From writer/director Max Joseph, here’s a first look at the trailer for We Are Your Friends starring Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Wes Bentley.
The film marks Max Joseph’s (MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show”) feature film directorial debut.
We Are Your Friends is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.

Candler is a 2014 Women at Sundance Fellow and attended last week's Female Filmmakers Initiative Financing Intensive designed to educate a large number of women filmmakers in all aspects of seeking, securing and managing funding for their films. Last week's Female Filmmakers Initiative Financing Intensive was exactly that—intense. But greatly so. It was a jam-packed day of intimate round tables, case studies, disheartening research coupled with empowerment coaching and Q&As with venture capitalists, financiers and digital media leaders. And at the end of the day it was filled with friends and a community rallying behind each other. Local filmmaker Kat Candler is hosting a two-day indie filmmaking workshop May 2-3. As frequent Slackerwood readers surely know, Candler is an award-winning writer and director. Her films Hellion (both short and feature), Black Metal and Jumping Off Bridges screened at Sundance, SXSW Film Festival, and many other film festivals.
Candler's feature film Hellion, starring Aaron Paul and Juliette Lewis, was a Sundance Creative Producing Lab participant and premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. I saw the movie at Sundance 2014 --- read my review and Don's review -- and interviewed Candler while I was there. Hellion was released in theaters last June through IFC Films.
Candler is also a 2014 Sundance Women’s Initiative Fellow, and was one of the panelists for the "Indie Filmmakers Share Their Secrets For Working With Actors" session at the SXSW Film Conference last month.

I got the chance to chat with the multi-talented Tanner Beard about his time as Executive Producer on the latest Terrence Malick film Knight of Cups. Malick brings his spiritual effervescence to the vapid decadence of Hollywood, and the results look to be distastefully incandescent. Tanner Beard provides Malick what he needs to deliver on that vision. But he also acts, writes, and directs. Outside of Knight Of Cups he’s got a Western, an animated feature, a Christmas Comedy, and a couple documentaries on the back burner. But he’s thankful to stay so busy in an industry he loves, and it was a pleasure to discuss the details of his career. Check it out!
Q. People tend to demonize producers as these constant obstacles on the director and crew. But how does that differ or stand in the independent market?
A. Well... Taking Knight Of Cups out of the equation.

Exclusive: Deadline can exclusively reveal that Bill Hader is narrating the feature documentary Beaver Trilogy Part IV, a meta-movie centered on cult director Trent Harris that’s set to come full circle when it premieres Friday night at the Sundance Film Festival.
Director Brad Besser’s new docu explores Utah filmmaker Harris’ years-long obsession with the story of Groovin’ Gary, an enigmatic performer from Beaver, Utah. The two met by chance in a parking lot in 1979 and Harris started filming, resulting in the cult documentary The Beaver Kid, a study in hopes and dreams highlighted by Gary’s performance in drag singing Olivia Newton-John’s “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting.” A distraught Gary shot himself soon after the first film, but survived.
The film went on to earn cult status on the underground circuit, where fans traded VHS tapes of Harris’ once-in-a-lifetime film and the subsequent shorts he made re-creating it,...

Potentially filling Sundance’s quota for difficult relationships, Hannah Fidell (profiled in our Ioncinephile series) will have moved from the heated, self-deprecating rapport between prof and student in A Teacher (selected for the Next section in 2013) to a tumultuous, uphill/downhill portrait of couplehood in 6 Years. Reunited with cinematographer/filmmaker Andrew Droz Palermo (Rich Hill), this Austin shot drama has benefitted from the extra time in post-production as it was shot in March of this year and we’re sure glad she didn’t waste much time between projects. Younglings Taissa Farmiga (see on set pic above) and Ben Rosenfield (last year’s Song One) topline the feature, while Sundance regular Joshua Leonard, Jennifer Lafleur, Peter Vack and Lindsay Burdge (who has appeared in Fidell’s We’re Glad You’re Here (2010) and of course toplined A Teacher) are the supporting players.

This is why we need more women making movies. This is the sort of movie we simply don’t get when it’s always men telling their stories. After the huge success of "Breaking Bad," many were very interested in seeing which direction Aaron Paul would take his career. His big studio film was "Need For Speed," but before that smash-em-up film played there was a smaller, more intimate tale of a father trying to do right by his young, rebellious son.
Kat Candler's "Hellion" played well at Sundance, and this stark independent film is now making its way to home video this month. Last January, Moviefone Canada got to speak with Paul about this project, and we were joined by Candler as well as the young lead, Josh Wiggins.
Much of the conversation surrounded discussion of Wiggins, an actor Aaron was almost evangelical about in his enthusiasm.
Moviefone Canada: Mr. Paul, you've been a huge proponent of Josh's work -- what does Josh's performance mean to you, and what did you see in his performance that...

When it's hot outside, there's no better place to cool off than a movie theater — except when it turns into Hollywood hell. Yes, our intrepid Peter Travers has returned with his trusty Scum Bucket to regale you with his tales of suffering through the absolute worst movies of June.
The Best and Worst Movies of 2014 So Far
Travers needs to say little more than the title of the movie clocking in at number 10, All Cheerleaders Must Die. Though he adds a curt "Do I need to say more?" before moving right along to The Signal,...

Stars: Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis, Josh Wiggins, Deke Garner, Dalton Sutton, Camron Owens, Dylan Cole, Jonny Mars, Walt Roberts, Annalee Jefferies | Written and Directed by Kat Candler
Review by Andrew McArthur
Kat Candler’s Hellion boasts some strong performances but ultimately feels like an amalgamation of various indie tropes that never quite hit the right emotional spot.
Texas-set Hellion follows widowed single father Hollis (Aaron Paul) who finds himself on the verge of losing his two sons to Child Protection Services after eldest son Jacob’s (Josh Wiggins) unruly behaviour attracts the attention of the police.
It seems that films revelling in Southern miserablism are all the rage recently with Mud, Joe and The Devil’s Knot all looking at the hard lives of the vulnerable people in the South of the USA. Perhaps the reason I draw this comparison is because Hellion shares so much in common with these...

Jacob Wilson is a troubled kid. Like many teenagers, he's a rebel without a pause, constantly battling the adults in his life while figuring out who he is. But adolescent battles are far worse for Jacob than for most 13 year olds; his life can be as noisy, chaotic and dangerous as the motocross races he enters for a shot at stardom and a little respect from his family and friends.
Jacob (Josh Wiggins) is at the center of Hellion, Austin filmmaker Kat Candler's gritty new feature based on her 2012 short of the same title. We can't really blame Jacob for being the titular troublemaker. His mother is dead; his alcoholic father, Hollis (Aaron Paul), tries to take care of his sons, but needs to try harder. With his father physically or emotionally absent much of the time, Jacob must look after his little brother, Wes (Deke Garner). He also...

Dark, brooding, and testy, Jacob is a typical 13-year-old boy. He dreams of motocross racing. He looks after his younger brother. And he ignores his alcoholic father, who is prone to outbursts of anger as he struggles to raise his two boys after the loss of his wife and their mother. Telling its story without demons or monsters, except those that arise from within, Kat Candler's absorbing drama Hellion exerts a quiet, compelling power. Far too often, the dynamics of a dysfunctional family are portrayed as commonplace in the current cinema, yet each domestic unit is composed of different and variable elements. Recognizing and respecting the disparity between families helps to distinguish Hellion from its dysfunctional brethren. Really, it comes down to resilience under pressure,...

Hellion is the feature-film debut for writer and director Kat Candler. With this film, Candler certainly has my full attention and should have yours as well. Few filmmakers can make such a powerful and meaningful statement — and do so successfully — on their first outing, but the term “rookie” would be gravely misused in its traditional context on such a filmmaker.
Aaron Paul, most notably recognized as Jessie from the television series Breaking Bad, portrays Hollis Wilson, a hard working father struggling to raise his two sons on his own. After his wife and mother of his boys died, times got tough and Hollis slipped into an alcoholic state as a means to cope. Meanwhile, his 13-year old son Jacob, played by Josh Wiggins, heads down a dangerously deviant path. In his first feature film, Wiggins shines. Influenced by heavy metal music and a passion for motor cross, Wiggins gives the troubled Jacob a thoughtful,...
