Nikhil is re-introduced to Meeta nearly ten years after their first meeting. Now, as Nikhil has one week to prove himself worth enough to marry Meeta's sister Karishma, the old acquaintances become quite close to each other.

Spread across Mumbai over a decade, the film presents the relationship between quirky, rebellious Meeta (Parineeti Chopra) and mischievous Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra), struggling with their respective families to fit in. Nikhil bumps into Meeta on the occasion of her sister Deeksha's wedding while Meeta is on the run. He falls in love with Meeta's sister Karishma on the same day. The film jumps to the eve of Nikhil and Karishma's engagement. Karishma's wealthy father, Devesh Solanki, does not approve of Nikhil as he finds him to be a lackadaisical young man. On the day of his engagement, Nikhil promises Karishma that he will prove himself worthy of her within the next seven days. Nikhil is re-introduced to Meeta by Karishma and is instructed to put her up in a hotel. Nikhil recognizes Meeta. In an attempt to please Karishma, he decides to keep Meeta in the flat above his own house, with his crazy extended family. During the course of Meeta's stay at Nikhil's house, they get closer to each other and open up to each other. On the eve of Nikhil and Karishma's engagement, Karishma's wealthy father, Devesh Solanki, expresses his disapproval, believing Nikhil to be a lackadaisical young man. With one week to prove himself worthy to marry Karishma, Nikhil and Karishma's sister Meeta grow closer to each other.

Meeta and Nikhil are 2 kids living separate lives but are both naughty & use small tricks to get their way with their parents. 14 years later, 2006 in Delhi, Nikhil & Meeta briefly cross paths when Meeta is running away from the wedding of Nikhil's friend. Nikhil helps Meeta with her luggage and helps her hail an auto. Even in the brief interaction, Meeta impresses Nikhil by narrating innovations in cricket like 20 over per side games, revolving fields, 11 specialists each as batsmen, bowlers and fielders and so on. Meeta invites Nikhil to come with her to Goa, but he declines. At the same wedding Nikhil meets Meeta's sister Karishma, who is ultra hot & Nikhil is smitten with her. Nikhil is studying to become an IPS officer. Karishma is an aspiring model.

7 years later Nikhil (Sidharth Malhotra) is a struggling businessman whose girlfriend Karishma (Adah Sharma) is an actress. Nikhil & Karishma are engaged. Nikhil is in event management & asks his father-in-law Devesh for Rs 5 Crore for the bid deposit amount for the IPL opening ceremony. Nikhil had to do this as the IPL committee increased the deposit amount for the contract from 1 Crores to 6 Crores. Devesh is not happy with this as Nikhil had already borrowed Rs 30 Lakhs from Karishma to buy an apartment, and even that money has not been returned yet. Nikhil is a guy who believes once you are committed to a girl, there should be no straying. He is the guy every girl would love to have.

Karishma is angry at Nikhil for asking money from her dad. She wants to break up the engagement, but Nikhil begs her not to. Karishma believes that Nikhil lacks self-respect, but Nikhil says that he has not ego with people whom he considers his own. Karishma asks Nikhil to arrange INR 5 Crores before marriage, which is 7 days later, thus forcing him to prove his worth on his own. Karishma and Devesh believe that Nikhil will do nothing in life and will become a house husband.

In the meantime, Nikhil meets Meeta (Parineeti Chopra), Karishma's younger sister, with whom he had a brief encounter 7 years ago. Meeta, who is an IIT pass-out in chemical engineering, is a super intelligent geek, who ran away to China after stealing money from her own father, leading to his heart attack. Meeta had stolen the money as she was asking for funds to launch her own project, but her conservative family was against Meeta doing business & refused her request,

Now, just a week before Nikhil and Karishma's wedding, Meeta turned up to meet her father, but Karishma was scared that her sister's sudden appearance might ruin their wedding. Hence Karishma assigns Nikhil to keep Meeta away from her father Devesh Solanki (Manoj Joshi).

Karishma asks Nikhil to put Meeta in a guesthouse, but when Nikhil learns that Meeta is Karishma's sister, he takes her to his own house. Nikhil stays with father S. B. Bharadwaj (Sharat Saxena), mother (Neena Kulkarni) and brother Abhay (Sameer Sharma).

He introduces Meeta as the friend of his younger brother Abhay. Meeta is very extrovert & soon involves herself in all the family functions at Nikhil's house. Meeta makes attempts to meet her family, but Nikhil stops her each time.

Despite Nikhil's best efforts, Karishma is continually angry at him & keeps breaking up with him during the course of the functions. Every time Karishma gives Nikhil a hard time, Meeta is there for him, to console him, to help him & to care for him. Meeta tells Nikhil that she wanted to do PhD in China for which she stole money from her dad. The money ran out, but the research was not completed, so she borrowed Rs 10 Crores money from an investor in China & had to escape as now the investor is demanding the money back.

During their 7 days of encounter Nikhil and Meeta generate feelings for each other, but Nikhil backs off as he doesn't want to betray Karishma. Nikhil also tries very hard to get a backer for his idea to sponsor the event management for IPL, so that he can raise the 5 Crores that Karishma has demanded of him. But he can't find anyone to back his idea & to give him the money. Meeta is accused by Nikhil's family of stealing jewelry from the wedding house, but Nikhil stands by Meeta & eventually is able to prove that she did not steal anything.

Meanwhile, Nikhil comes to know that for her research Meeta has taken a heavy loan from a Chinese investor by forging her father's signature. The deadline for payback is over, and an extension of three days was given, during which she has to steal money from her father's account to save him from the investor's goons. Nikhil helps Meeta to hack her father's account but also convince her to apologize to her family.

Meeta reunites with her family as her father forgives her and instead of stealing, Meeta asks money from her father. Meeta later meets Nikhil and proposes an elopement, but unwilling to betray Karishma, he backs off. Meanwhile, Mukesh Adnani (Tinnu Anand), an investor, shows his interest in Nikhil's idea, which was originally proposed by Meeta.

On the wedding day, Meeta leaves her house without informing anyone, leaving her mobile phone in Karishma's room. Nikhil tries to call her and sends many texts, which go unanswered. On reaching the Mandapa, Devesh informs Nikhil that she has left for China.

Karishma finds Meeta's phone in her room, reads Nikhil's messages, and realizes she has lost Nikhil. During the wedding, she asks Nikhil to leave to which Nikhil hesitantly obliges. Heartbroken, Meeta tries to run away, but soon gathers enough courage to go back and profess her love for Nikhil. She and Nikhil reunite at the same place and predicament they first met 7 years ago. They both express their love for each other and share a kiss.

The film ends with Nikhil, now an IPS officer and Meeta, at the airport, scheduled to travel to Germany. Meeta tells him that there is another problem waiting for them there, as Meeta tells Nikhil, he will be safe but Nikhil says he wants Meeta to be safe with him as well, and they have a fun banter.
