The Acolyte's Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Brings Out The Star Wars Fandom's Dark Side
Image
Well, it's happened again. A high-profile franchise project starring women, members of the Lgbtqia community, and/or Poc has been review-bombed by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with the most vocally intolerant corners of a sprawling fandom making their voices heard loud and clear.

"Star Wars: The Acolyte" is the latest project on the receiving end of this tactic, with the show's audience score having fallen to 14% as of this writing. At this point, as only the fifth sentence of this article begins to unspool, I imagine a lot of fans are already bracing themselves, ready and waiting to wade into a discussion that's been happening in some form or fashion for a decade at this point. "Hey," they'll say, "I just genuinely think this show/movie sucks, Ok? Don't lump me in with racists and misogynists who go out of their way to give projects like this one star just for the lolz.

“You know, not all witches are Nightsisters”: Leslye Headland Admits Star Wars Veteran Was an Unsung Hero in Controversial Storyline in The Acolyte
Image
The Acolyte is the latest Star Wars project that has made its way to the screens, with director cum screenwriter Leslye Headland taming it at its helm. While the series has garnered some major critical acclaim, the general audiences and most fan views tend to differ, especially because of the controversial storyline it has followed so far — one that fans can’t help but term “woke.”

The Acolyte. | Credit: Disney+.

That said, Headland isn’t the only one for critics to praise and fans to curse for bringing something new like this to the table. As it turns out, one other veteran of the saga, who himself has produced some of the most epic Sw projects, was an unsung hero in helping Headland develop this controversial storyline. This was Dave Filoni, who is the current Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm.

Dave Filoni was a “Kind of a Mentor” to Leslye...

Why Is Leslye Headland, Star Wars' Next Showrunner, So Controversial?
Image
Leslye Headland, creator of The Acolyte, faces backlash on social media - some criticisms rooted in racism and misogyny, despite her lifelong love of Star Wars. Headland's connections to Harvey Weinstein spark concern, but her play "Assistance" serves as a critique of her time at Miramax. Accusations of pushing a LGBTQ+ agenda in The Acolyte are debunked, as Headland draws inspiration from Frozen for her story.

Social media is abuzz with arguments about Star Wars' next showrunner, creator of The Acolyte - but why is she so controversial? Star Wars' latest Disney+ TV show has proved extremely controversial, with The Acolyte review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Not all criticisms have been in good faith, and there's been some thinly-veiled racism and misogyny mixed in with legitimate criticisms. Some has been directed at showrunner Leslye Headland in particular.

Born in 1980, Headland is well known for the play and 2012 movie Bachelorette,...

Star Wars Fans Are Intense. ‘The Acolyte’ Showrunner Leslye Headland Is Ready
Image
Leslye Headland is not a tentative person. She pauses before speaking, but not because she’s waffling about what to say. More because she’s a writer and how is almost as important as what she says, and also because we’re talking about The Acolyte, her upcoming TV show set in the Star Wars universe during the High Republic (for the non-saber-pilled among us, that’s about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, the beginning of what’s referred to as the Skywalker Saga, when Sith happens). The Acolytes Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Staggering Compared to How Much Audiences Hate It
Image
The Acolyte boasted an impressive 86% Rotten Tomatoes score when it was released, and it has only increased over time, creating a vast disparity between what audiences think of the series. A mixture of good and bad critiques may ultimately cause the Star Wars series' Rt score to decrease over time as critics continue to turn in their reviews. One thing is for certain barely 30% of Rotten Tomatoes audiences like the series. The Acolyte's two-episode debut dropped on Disney+ June 4 at 9 p.m. Edt. New episodes premiere each Tuesday.

At the outset, the Force seemed strong with the upcoming series from creator Leslye Headland. Hours before the new Star Wars shows two-episode debut officially dropped on Disney+, The Acolyte boasted an 86% rating on the Tomatometer. Many people thought that this could be a case of fools gold for the newest enty in Disney's multi-billion-dollar franchise. After all, when switching from All...

“$750,000 Per Minute of Footage”: Star Wars Fans Can’t Believe Disney Spent $90 Million More to Make The Acolyte Than It Spent For Obi-Wan Kenobi
Image
Star Wars will be getting a new show next month called The Acolyte. The mystery thriller show is reportedly set before the events of the Star Wars films (even the prequels) and follows the murder of multiple Jedi Knights. Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland acts as the creator and showrunner of the Disney+ series.

While the show has been in the making for the past four years, it has reportedly cost Disney a lot of money. According to a new report, the eight-episode series cost the studio $180 million, which is a lot considering the show features none of the characters previously seen in the franchise. Even the Ewan McGregor starring Obi-Wan Kenobi had a budget of $90 million.

Lucasfilm Boss Kathleen Kennedy Says ‘A Lot of Women’ in ‘Star Wars’ Struggle With Fan Attacks ‘Because of the Fan Base Being So Male Dominated’
Image
In a new interview with The New York Times for the upcoming “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said she is aware that women in the space franchise are often attacked online more than men “because of the fan base being so male dominated.” Female stars Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran certainly faced online harassment from toxic fans when the most recent “Star Wars” film trilogy was released, and now “The Acolyte” is already being attacked in certain corners of the fandom.

“The Acolyte” is an original story created by Leslye Headland that’s set long before the events of “The Phantom Menace.” Headland, known for directing films such as “Sleeping With Other People” and co-creating Netflix’s hit comedy series “Russian Doll,” is the first woman to serve as showrunner of a “Star Wars” series. Comet: A Romantic Comedy That Deserves More Love
Image
Among the most underrated romantic comedies ever made is Comet (2014), starring Emmy Rossum and Justin Long. Those performers got their start around the same time as one another, with Long debuting in Galaxy Quest (1999) and Rossum in Songcatcher (2000) at the turn of the century. The former film is far more famous. But Songcatcher saw great success upon release, as well. In the following year, Long starred in a horror stint called Jeepers Creepers (2001), and it was off to superstardom from there.

Meanwhile, Rossum appeared in Mystic River (2003) by Clint Eastwood, then traversed a similar trajectory. She followed up with another supporting role in The Day After Tomorrow (2004), along with the first co-starring role of her career in The Phantom of the Opera (2004). But more recent fans of Rossum's may be familiar with her versatile career thanks to her leading role as Fiona Gallagher in the hit television series Shameless. She's...

Lucasfilm debuted the first footage from the upcoming “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” to thousands of fans at Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. Why ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ Hired Writer Who’s Never Seen Any ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Image
Leslye Headland is best known for directing raunchy comedies “Bachelorette” and “Sleeping with Other People” and for co-creating Netflix’s “Russian Doll,” which makes her an invigorating and unconventional-on-paper choice to serve as showrunner of a “Star Wars” television series. Headland is behind “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” which Disney confirmed last December as part of its “Star Wars” streaming series expansion. Not much is known about the series other than it being set during the final days of the High Republic, an era which pre-dates George Lucas’ original “Star Wars.” With the setting not so beholden to the Skywalker saga, Headland could take more risks with her writers’ room.

“Mostly what I looked for were people that I felt could execute a great script, number one,” Headland recently told Av Club about finding writers for her “Star Wars” series. “And then in the job interview, just really talking to people...

‘Russian Doll’ Co-Creator Leslye Headland: How I ‘Broke Up’ With Being Straight
Image
Writer-director Leslye Headland is a celebrated indie storyteller and authority on the triumphs and struggles of contemporary women. Now shepherding the “Star Wars” TV series “The Acolyte” for Disney Plus, her credits include “Russian Doll,” “Sleeping With Other People” and the comedy “Bachelorette.” Here she shares her coming-out journey.

The saddest night of my life was the 2012 Los Angeles premiere of my film “Bachelorette.” It was not without warning.

Earlier that year, when my directorial debut premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, I was flooded with both relief and anxiety: relief, because my work was being recognized; anxiety, because when your dreams come true and you’re not living as your authentic self, it is a particularly painful experience. After years preparing for failure, nothing had prepared me for success.

Months later, at the premiere, I was blonder, thinner and “straight”-er than I’d ever been. My hotel was...
