Competently shot, but
r96sk28 February 2022
Competently shot, but everything else about 'Outlier' (aka 'Nick') is unfortunately not good.

Melina Matthews and Molly Malcolm are passable in the acting department, though the rest of them aren't great - especially the other lead. The film is set/filmed in Andorra which is nice, though I wouldn't say it shows the place off as much as I could've. The plot, meanwhile, has potential yet concludes with a damp squib. This 2010s film does have a solid score and song (+ music video!), though.

I didn't know you had a brother
nogodnomasters4 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In a small town in Andorra, Margaret (Molly Malcolm) is a police officer who has the single life she desires. To her dismay she discovers he 15 year old half brother is coming to live with her. He has been expelled from his London school. He has an extensive record getting into fights and skipping class, a regular trouble maker. He likes to take pictures and hits it off well with Amber (Melina Matthews) a fellow police officer who likes horses and animals. On day one Nick claims he witnessed a murder, took a photo of the killer and no one believes him...no bodies, no one reported missing.

The film gets more interesting as we attempt to identify the killer without a missing person or corpse. At this point I hate to say anything more about the killer as it would be a plot spoiler for some. The film spends most of the production developing the character of boring people. Margaret doesn't even like puppies and only tolerates her half-brother as she meets him for the first time. This feels like a pilot film for a series as the ending remains indefinitely open.

Guide: F-word (Amber, near the end) No sex or nudity.

An oddity
Phil_Chester10 November 2018
The pace of this film is so glacial and the dialogue so on-the-nose that it almost feels like it was made as a teaching aid for English as a second language learners. The story is pretty impenetrable and the characters all behave really strangely, so the whole adds up to a bizarre oddity, which has precious little charm. Probably best avoided.

More of a TV Pilot than a Movie
tbaio-2586627 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Outlier or Nick (the title in which I viewed the movie)would have been better off as a start to a TV series than as a movie.

The film takes a very long time establishing the day to day activities of the main characters as well as the volatile relationship between the stars of the film (the town officer & her step-brother).

In between all this, a killer is stalking the town murdering at will & going undetected. After 3 quarters of the film's running time, the story begins to pick-up with some tension & a slight turn in the direction of the supernatural. This however, gets interrupted with more character establishing dialogue which diminishes the film's most tense moment. An attempt is made to rebuild the tension, which does work. However, that is unfortunately the conclusion of the film.

****Possible Spoiler: In short, nothing is resolved.****

This was clearly meant to be the 1st in a series of episodes. The film makers didn't take time to think however that for television, the viewer only has to wait till next week to see the continuation of the story. Nick though is a movie and ending it at a cliffhanger with no guarantees that a sequel will be made is a frustrating viewing experience for the audience.

A let-down overall.

Where in the world

American woman talks with British people who don't live in England while the back of her jacket says "Policia." BORING and head scratching, a terrible combination that yields a reach for the remote be it located on my couch or in Tim-Buk-Tu

SLOW
chereenrose5 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Slowest. Movie. Ever. I was bored out of my mind. I only continued because I wanted to see if he (13 yr old Nick) actually witnessed a murder. He took pics of the murderer, yet when he gets the photos back no one is in them. So subsequently he thinks it's a vampire. He saw someone dismembering a body with a chain saw, but in the next frame it's firewood not a body. This movie is bizarre & the ending is open ended which was extremely frustrating. I would say skip this one.

Slow, odd and slightly wooden, yet engrossing and terrifying by turns
richardgraham-3507128 November 2018
Unsympathetic characters, some weirdly stilted acting, and an opaque plot give this film a very unusual feel. But don't let this, or the bad reviews, put you off. Actually it's an excellent film which drew me in and then scared the she-hit out of me. If all films were the same it'd be really boring. I'd rather watch this than 99 out of 100 Hollywood blockbusters. Hooray for weirdness!

Atmospheric

I enjoyed this movie because of it's unique, strange atmosphere. The setting alone almost became a character in the movie. It's slow, brooding and scary. I think the very end could have been better but overall I liked it.

I went in, despite the low rating, and wow, was I pleasently surprised!
JaneBingley3 October 2022
Well, I really liked it. It got my attention, very good story, beautiful scenery, fine acting.

I love these kinds of murder mysteries, small town, woods, snow.

I went in, despite the low rating, and wow, was I pleasently surprised! Its filmed in Andorra, a tiny country here in Europe, a country which is beautiful, but like other Eastern countries, has its share of fnancial problems.

None of that was present here, this movie was very well made.

My only problem was with the main character, the police woman. She was unlikeable, and extremely incompetent at her work.

I would say she was downright stupid.

Her female colleague was a better actress, and a way better police officer.

All in all, I recomend it.

Strange?
bardie-2024926 December 2018
This to me is very strange story and it left me wondering where is was going to lead to. I guess by the way it finished there will be a sequel? But if there is, one wonders how they are going to keep the story going without it becoming predictable and boring. On the whole, a basic film that I would only watch if I had no other choice.

A slow burn movie ruined by over acting
kjohn-7789114 February 2024
Saw this one earlier and came away from it in two minds about the movie.

Firstly I don't mind a slow burn thriller, if that is what you can call this movie.

Secondly o found this whole movie was ruined by the guy that played the step brother, he was awful, I am sure the actors name is Cooper Carfar, I hope I spelt it right.

Stop giving this boy movie roles, he was awful. He over acted in huge clumps, in fact every scene he was in, he ruined it.

So into the film itself, to slow and I mean slow for it to be gripping.

The way it was filmed, yes I know because of budget restrains but no it wasn't very good.

So really a film that is worth a watch but ruined by over acting. Give this one a miss.
