Nothing very special..... but watchable
bunty1819 October 2013
Well honestly there is nothing very special in Embrace of the Vampire and it wont make a difference if you skip it....

The movie is not scary or thrilling and the climax is quit predictable as well. If you are expecting a little bit of action then you are in for a disappointment. As far as the acting is concerned, its not bad at all..... Sharon Hinnendael who plays the lead as Charlotte has done a fine job (though sometimes she does try to act like Kristen Stewart in Twilight...lolz), the other cast has done a good job as well, I wont say great but good.... The girls in the movie including Sharon show quite a bit of skin so that keeps it a bit interesting ha ha.

The plot is simple, an Orphan girl goes to a top grade University for higher studies on scholarship, conveniently the university campus is in a beautiful hilly location, where an innocent Vampire just happens to be waiting for her for past 500 years or so...gah...

If you are watching this movie for the story, thrill, suspense or horror element then you will be disappointed. However, if you feel like killing your time or like me you are a fan of vampire movies you might find it watchable.

Overall nothing very special..... but I don't think anyone would get bored while watching it, for me this movie is a 4 out of 10.

Lame Story
claudio_carvalho24 May 2015
The virgin and repressed Charlotte Hawthorn (Sharon Hinnendael) joins the university from a Catholic school with a scholarship for participating in the fencing team. She shares the room with Nicole (Kaniehtiio Horn) and tells that her mother died and she is alone. Charlotte has thalassemia and is forced to use medicine. She gets a job working as waitress in a coffee shop managed by Chris (Ryan Kennedy). Soon she meets the fencing coach, who is also responsible for the literature classes, Professor Cole (Victor Webster), and her mate Eliza (C.C. Sheffield) becomes jealous with his treatment toward Charlotte. Soon she has daydreams and the mystic Daciana (Keegan Connor Tracy) that is the owner of a store explains her fate in world as a vampire hunter, but Charlotte does not believe in her until her friends die.

"Embrace of the Vampire" is a movie with a lame story. It is watchable mainly because of the scenes with the naked girls. But the acting is terrible and the conclusion is weak. My vote is four.

T&A and vampires too
SnoopyStyle18 December 2013
There isn't anything special here. It's a bit of T&A inside a weak vampire story. Charlotte Hawthorn (Sharon Hinnendael) is a shy new girl in college with a dark mysterious past. She is on scholarship from fencing. Only she's having hellish visions and waking up in strange places.

Hinnendael is an OK actress, and not much is asked of her. Her character is shy, speaks softly, and shows off her body. She can walk and talk. But she's not doing Shakespeare here. Her roommate Nicole (Kaniehtiio Horn) has a bit more spark. And Victor Webster plays that hot intense teacher. Keegan Connor Tracy plays a witchy mysterious woman. The acting is OK. The story is simple. The big missing ingredient is a sense of style, and a menacing atmosphere. For a horror movie, that's a big deal. This is a better-than-most B-movie.

Disappointing and boring
Vartiainen6 February 2017
Charlotte Hawthorn (Sharon Hinnendael) has lived a pretty sheltered life so far. She attended an all-girls Catholic school, is a quiet and reserved personality, and so on. But now she's about to attend a co-ed university on a fencing scholarship. But her past, containing an ancient evil, is all set to haunt her new life.

If that sounds unbelievably clichéd and contrived, it's because it is. Embrace of the Vampire is a remake of 1995 film of the same name. And why they wanted to remake such an average film, I have no idea, but they didn't exactly improve upon the source material, to say the least. The acting is stilted, the pacing either crawls or rushes forwards with lightning speed and the movie just kind of ends in the middle of a fight. Yeah, just as things are starting to come together, in what would normally be the end of the second act, the film decides that you've seen enough and the credits roll. I almost didn't believe my eyes.

It should also be noted that this is supposed to belong to the erotic vampire genre. The only problem being that it doesn't have the guts to do even that correctly. Sure there's some nudity and sexual situations, but barely anything more than you'd see in your typical teen comedy. If the movie would have at least provided us with proper erotica, it could have kind of worked as a B-movie. But no, it plays it safe. Sounds thrilling, doesn't it.

So yeah, this movie will quietly fade into history as an utter failure on pretty much all levels. So long, movie. You shall not be missed.

A worthless remake
Leofwine_draca5 July 2015
A straight-to-video Canadian vampire film, set in a high school, with its main character a former Catholic schoolgirl who finds herself venturing down some very dark alleyways as she becomes drawn to some characters who may or may not be bloodsuckers. EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE is the remake of a 1990s film starring Martin Kemp that I haven't watched, and suffice to say it's almost entirely worthless as a movie.

Vampire films are so ubiquitous these days (much like zombie movies) that they have to be really special to stand out. Unsurprisingly this isn't special at all, and instead it's content to play out all the usual vampire clichés alongside sappy love scenes and some poor CGI vampire effects. The uncut version of this movie is by all accounts chock full of nudity and sleaze, but the version I watched was the cable export in which all the nudity has been censored. Not that ample nudity would save this silly softcore attempt to frighten audiences with its bad acting and overwhelming clichés.

An Honest Review
generationofswine7 April 2017
Have you seen it? No? There is likely a very good reason for that...it stinks.

Like nearly ALL the endless remakes and reboots that have been plaguing movie goers for the past decade or so....all this is, is a heartless version of the original.

It has no heart.

It has no soul.

It is a retelling of a film that we all love and cherish...and it adds nothing to the story. It improves nothing but the special effects--which held up very well over time--and in some cases belittles the fans of the original...particularly in the fact that they remade the movie at all, without adding anything clever to it.

Like so many other remakes it is a hallow shell of the original.

Surprisingly Decent
cosmosj-4634820 October 2016
Was expecting a Skinemax style mindless soft-core kinda movie, but this one exceeded my expectations. As a B-movie enthusiast, I watch a lot of terrible movies for fun. The plot, while not terribly original, was different enough from the usual vampire fare to keep me interested. For most of the first two thirds, there was enough going on to keep the ending from being too predictable, but after the reveal the resolution was pretty standard and a little disappointing. The acting wasn't anything special, but managed not to detract from the movie.

Overall, this was much better than I was expecting. As a bonus, there was plenty of eye candy and a very nice lesbian scene. In my opinion, this one was actually better than the original.

Worthy remake
TdSmth56 April 2014
In the 1700s in Eastern Europe a woman arrives at a house where a screaming girl is being held on a table. The woman cuts the girl's arm, pronounces some spell and drips some blood from a vial in the girl's wound. She then places a necklace on her in time when a female vampire attacks and bites a man who's also in the house to protect the girl.

In the present, Charlotte arrives at college. She's very shy, reserved, downright repressed. She's there on a fencing scholarship and has to perform or else she's out. Her parents are dead. She inherited a blood disorder that killed her mom and also has creepy visions. Her roommate is nice to her, but her friend hates Charlotte, who starts working at a coffee shop where the owner develops feelings for her. Some type of psychic also notices Charlotte. And a creepy administrator also takes an interest in her.

Charlotte is taking a literature class that is dealing with mythology-- monsters and the like. The male professor for some reason is also the coach for the female fencing team. While Charlotte tries to stay out of trouble one night she's taken out for the fencing team rookie hazing, where she's made to drink. She's never had alcohol before. That night she also sleeps with another girl. Now her life goes into chaos. She can't fence right, her visions intensify and become more terrifying, she rejects the help from her friends. When she finally visits the psychic lady, things are revealed to her. She's from a line of vampire hunters, as was the girl on the table in the intro. The lady on the other hand is a descendant from the woman who was treating the girl. Charlotte even inherited the necklace from the intro. And it's burning into her skin which means a vampire is near. Charlotte will have to accept her destiny and face the vampire, a vampire who seeks to become human if he only can get ahold of a virgin--like Charlotte.

Embrace of the Vampire has an attractive cast that shows plenty of skin. The location of the college is stunning. The direction is excellent. The story perhaps could have used some work. But at the same time it's not predictable. It's not the usual simplistic evil vampire against some innocent victims story until some hero appears. For a while the story just focuses on on Charlotte and sets the vampire aspect aside, so we could have used some more vampire action. The ending is sudden and strange. But it sets up things for a sequel which I'm looking forward to.

thriller with a touch of gore and a lot of nude scenes
mollidew31 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie couldn't really be called a remake of the film that starred Alyssa Milano in the 90s. Other than cast names one could only say it was inspired by the original. I saw someone mention the actress who played Charlotte acting like Kristen Stewart. This simply is not true. The girl was suffering from night terrors, ancestral memory flashbacks and delusions or waking dreams as they were referred to in the movie. She was traumatized not knowing what was real and what was not. She was on medications and had no living family and had been in a Catholic school, not to mention she was a virgin. She got a scholarship for fencing and this was why she was in college. She had reverted into herself and was extremely shy. The only thing negative I have to say about it was too many sex scenes. They were not needed. The story was a little hard to follow and most of the explanation came from the Gypsy lady or I assumed that was what she was by the way she portrayed her character. If you are looking for something that goes bump in the night you won't find that in this movie or the original which was more of a paranormal romance. It is about a girl trying to figure out what is happening to her, getting hazed by the fencing team because she was the newbie and trying to come to grips with her predicament. She didn't understand what was happening to her. They could have clarified more about her background and why she was taking meds. It was obvious but we don't see how these flashbacks and hallucinations begin and what the professionals were telling her since she was taking drugs. It's like she was just sort of dropped off at the school and you had to piece together what it all means. This is a B movie to me and a good one for that class. If you are looking for a 30 Days of Night type of a movie, you won't find it in this one. It's not the worst movie because I have watched many but just not an A list movie. It really would depend on your taste but I think it is one that should be watched more than once to get everything because of all the flashbacks and hallucinations in the film.

Don't waste your time on this movie
jimelas-835-9829164 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was awful basically an excuse to see small breasted white women topless. There was an added lesbian scene to spice things up that's why IO gave the movie at least a two but she didn't remember she was with the girl, then she almost loses her virginity in the woods no less but the vampire spoils that. Then she goes over to the vampires house after he slaughters all her friends and they proceed to make out and she stabs him then he bites her she opens the curtains he burst into flames then she just lays there gushing blood end of story. This movie was a flipping waste of money. Again just an excuse to see a bunch of small breasted white women topless just watch porn.

Godzilla says this movie sucks, and so do I.
DustinRahksi23 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
So this is apparently a remake of some soft core porno, you know the industry stooped low when they are remaking porn. This movie is very boring, maybe it has to do with the one dimensional characters that ooze blandness every time I see them. Maybe it's to do with the fact that the first hour doesn't make any sense. Charlotte has issues, yeah okay. Maybe it has something to do with the WTF Pre credits scene, all I know is the film jumps back and forth between reality and dream land.

All that I got out of this film is college is a pretty gross place, the women are like some torture masters. They haze fresh-mens by forcing them to strip and drink hard liquor, and if they don't comply, they are beaten. And if that's not the worst part, Charlotte is molested by some lesbian rapist, this right here showcases the soft core source material, that and about a dozen other sex and nude scenes. Then she's got this pervert co-worker breathing down her neck, he gets touchy feely and even stalks her. At this point the film showcases how unlikable all of the characters are. So Charlotte succumbs to the basic human need for sex, and lets Chris(her co worker) do the deed. But he gets killed before he can do it, was I supposed to care, I'll admit I laughed a little. At this point in the film it's pretty much twilight with all the love and BS drama between the girls and boys. So when will this end, oh another 20 minutes, I'll just skip to the end. And that's it, she kills the vampire and has a good cry, because she is going to be the new vampire, or something like that.

It's a terrible film straight from Canada, I knew that before the credits ended, it had a Canadian feel to it. I gave it a 1 out of 10, more so because it wasted my time, every thing about it is bad, and it's just a bland and uninteresting story. Gunga Gee Ga Gunga, as Elpresador would say, it's terrible people.

Not embracing the movie
stone_c917 February 2014
This is a remake of the 1995 movie starring Alyssa Milano as Charlotte. You expect a remake would be good but this is not the case. Just like the original it was very bad. I have nothing good to write about this movie except the lesbian scene, the rest are all garbage. The female character in this movie is played by Sharon Hinnendael as Charlotte Hawthorn. Her character reminds me of Bella Swan from Twilight, shy and a quite girl. However she can't act and so are the rest of the cast member. Also the story line is so lame I could not bare to watch without pausing every 10 minutes. If you seen the original there's no point of seeing this movie, unless you skip to the " good part ".

A Lousy Remake Of A Great Alyssa Milano Film
FilmMan4726 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This film is another proof that remakes and reboots are never good for any franchise or even a single solo film that was released decades ago look at James Bond 007 series a fine example of how to kill something great a sequel is always appreciated but this is not the case with this film embrace of the vampire 2013 this film is lousy remake of a great project came out in 1995 starting Alyssa Milano.

The acting is extremely annoying even kids do better then this all the hot ladies got wasted here even the lead actress Sharon Hinnendael does give her best but wrong story with awful direction ruined everything here.

The concept of the original 1995 film & this one shares similarities but this one is entirely different in many ways the viewer is taken for granted here this is the slowest film for its genre have these people ever heard the word pace i guess not Carl Bessai maybe a good director but looks like he got confused here on how to execute this entire thing properly.

The Plot:Charlotte comes to a university but soon bizarre things start to happen around her the evil force corrupts Charlotte she gets visions & more often when she is near professor Cole.

The ending is laughable, cheesy & crazy at the same time aping other famous horror titles if anyone is looking at the poster thinking there might be some intimate scenes here they will be disappointed as there is one lesbian scene here which is shot badly not even a single good straight scene here.

Just who allowed these people to ruin 90s epic that's right i am saying it anything that is from 90s is classic compared with todays nonsense,if this was so good it would have gone theatrical but it came direct to DVD it is just missing Steven Seagal or Dolph Lundgren.

Overall do not waste your time with this boring dull remake & watch the original instead my rating for embrace of the vampire 2013 is 2/10:skipp it

More Stefan, please
FilmChic8727 December 2014
Simply put: Less T&A and more Stefan. Victor Webster plays a fang-tactic vamp, but I wish he was in the story more. It would've been nice to see him shirtless to make up for the T&A heavy movie.

This remake is not quite as erotic as the original. It's actually borderline softcore porn at times. If I recall the original, there were plenty of dream sequences between Alyssa Milano and Martin Kemp, which helped build anticipation. This film, on the contrary, didn't build that anticipation enough. There was hardly any chemistry between Stefan and Charlotte. Also, Charlotte's constant delusions and/or flashbacks took too much time from the movie.

The scenery, although beautiful, seems heavily influenced by the Twilight films -- rain, dense forests and mountains minus a pack of wolves.

It's a decent effort compared to many recent vampire flicks( Kiss of the Damned might be the best one released in the last decade). Victor Webster made this film enjoyable, but barely.

SLAY OR BE SLAYED
nogodnomasters3 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a 1735 Bulgarian vampire scene, then switches to modern times. Charlotte (Sharon Hinnendael) attends North Summit University. She hails from an all girl Catholic school. She is pale, virginal, has a blood disease, and is socially inept. She is despised by the fencing team captain (Olivia Cheng), but is loved by Chris (Ryan Kennedy) Sarah (Chelsey Reist) and her fencing instructor (Victor Webster) who all want in her pants. Charlotte is clearly our dysfunctional Buffy who also suffers from hallucinations, bad dreams, and a gypsy (Keegan Connor Tracy) who needs to talk to her.

The vampire aspect is small. We don't find out who the vampire is until an hour into the film. Most of the film centers around Charlotte, her job, her hazing, and her locker room discussions. The film has gratuitous nudity which includes a stripping/drinking hazing scene as well as some girl/girl action that would be classified as soft core porn.

Perv Guide: F-bomb, sex, blond girl/blond girl action, nudity (Sharon Hinnendael, Kaniehtiio Horn, C.C. Sheffield, Chelsey Reist + others) 3 stars for the nudity.

Failing remake of a failure movie.
aryank-819-3237716 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I think i am the only one seen this movie because i am the only person here to write a review of this movie. what to say i first saw the trailer and then thought that the move will be at least be somewhat scary. but i was disappointed after watching the movie.

the only pluspoint of this movie is it has two good looking chicks who have no idea of on screen acting but yes the director must have tried really hard to make them look beautiful and sexy on screen.

That is the only credit i give to the director of this movie. other then that the move is a horse s.. see yourself to believe it.

this movie has some of the worst special effects. look and feel of the move is less ordinary than any indie film.

Embrace of the Vampire 2013
allmoviesfan19 August 2023
A Canadian remake of the cult classic version that starred Alyssa Milano and Martin Kemp. For starters, this iteration suffers for not having the gorgeous Alyssa Milano as it's lead, and Martin Kemp is a suaver vampire than Victor Webster, though Webster definitely has a few cool moments. Hard to reconcile VW as a bloodthirsty vampire when his "day job" is a Hallmark star.

Sharon Hinnendael as the protagonist, Charlotte Hawthorn who is new to university and torment by nightmarish visions (who isn't, these days?) is good, but is no Alyssa Milano, and the comparisons will always ne there. That said, she shows more skin than Alyssa did, and there is one particular memorable scene.

A downgrade on the Alyssa Milano original, but a pretty good movie if you set that fact aside.

Beautiful people, but not much of a story
Horst_In_Translation28 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Well the Twilight saga that I'm quite a fan of is over, so it's time to approach new vampire movies. One of the biggest non-cinema films of the genre in 2013 is "Embrace of the Vampire", a remake of the almost 20-year-old version starring Alyssa Milano. Unfortunately the hopes I put in this one were not really fulfilled. There's not really one single scene that genuinely scared me or had me on the edge of the seat. And I usually like films where the danger is sort of invisible, looking below the surface. The lead actress isn't too bad and the lead actor shows why he's one of the reasons behind the success of "Continuum". Unfortunately the two can't save the shoddy writing. It's the usual "innocent girl comes to new place and faces dark mysteries"-plot which was done so many times and most of the time better than here. Add a couple of the usual sorority girls and challenges (without the humor from teen comedies) and you have the typical example of a film where there's girls of every ethnicity and hair color and a virile guy and a boyishly cute guy, so there's something in there for every viewer's taste. Also, the film is quite explicit, almost soft-porn level: lots of making-out, boobs and even some girl-on-girl action, so you get horny at least if you don't get scared.

The story seemed to be wandering aimlessly between dream sequences and reality, so you never knew what was real and what wasn't. It wasn't as effective as I'd have liked it to be and same can be said for the centuries-earlier-flashbacks and for the final exposure of the vampire. The only scene I at least enjoyed a bit was the group trip to the forest. The setting was pretty good and would have made a great choice for the big ending scene. Instead they switched back quickly to the place full of police investigating what happened. Shame. A good ending can't save a film, but it can surely make you appreciate it more with hindsight and they missed this chance by choosing a far less interesting location for the final scene. All in all, it's really only worth watching for die-hard fans of vampire genre. Everybody else is not missing much.

masterpiece
zuri119 November 2013
This is the best movie I have ever seen. Even better than Spring Breakers. It's remarkable.

It belongs in its own category right next to the category that contains McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Look at that scenery. Look at that school. Look at those vampires. Wow.

I am more excited about this film than I was after seeing There Will Be Blood. This film will be watched and talked about for a long time.

If Flaubert were around, he would shout at the top of his lungs: 'This film made me cry.' And he would write an alternate version of Un Coeur Simple, set in 2013 at Quest University Canada.

If you like watching a girl in a trance alot
annasimpkins1 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Half this film is watching the main character trance out, walk around in a daze, finding herself waking up everywhere. Hardly any vampire, which was disappointing as he was the only good actor in the film. Lots of nudity that was so out of wack it made no sense or purpose. It was poorly written but the filming location was amazing. The scenery was the only thing that deserved a star.

Even more sucking
kosmasp3 July 2022
No pun intended - this is me trying to connect this to the 90s movie with the same title. But there are not that many connections to be made. I reckon the central part of the story is similar. But there are many differences too. Not sure if that is sufficient to not call this a remake. A reimagination then? Well you decide that.

There is again a lot of nudity and some blood that is shed. Particularly one lesbian scene, that contains both is quite intriguing. But it is also one of the few highlights the movie contains. There is not that much to get you too excited (no pun intended here either). Beautiful people, though I doubt many if any of them will ever become as famous or known as some of the stars of the "original" movie.

There is not much to say here, other than it looks good (visually, and again no pun intended), but lacks some substance. The key romantic love story is missing from the original, but as I said, this tries to spin something new with some of the perimeters it got from the other movie. Not sure if there is a novel they are based on (wouldn't surprise me), so can't make any comparisons if there is. It also seems inclined to use some of the vampire mythology that the other movie did not even look at ... for better or worse.

A Missed Opportunity
Uriah4315 March 2022
This film essentially begins with a young woman by the name of "Charlotte Hawthorn" (Sharon Hinnendael) transferring from an all-girls Catholic school to a small university which is paid for by her being granted a fencing scholarship. Upon arrival she is informed by the college dean "Dr. John Duncan" (Robert Moloney) that she will be expected to maintain a high grade average while also fulfilling the demands of her athletic scholarship at the same time. As if that wasn't enough, she also gets a part-timejob at the local coffee shop to make ends meet as well. In short, she doesn't have much free time on her hands. What she doesn't expect, however, is the sudden onset of hallucinations that suddenly appear without warning and are quite horrific in nature. Neither does she realize that an evil presence has followed her to this university and that it wants to have her at all costs. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film had all of the ingredients necessary for a good horror film but the director (Carl Bessai) never seemed to be able to generate sufficient action or suspense to meet that standard. Likewise, the ending could have used significant improvement as well. That said, while this may not have been a bad horror film necessarily, I honestly wasn't impressed with it and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.
