Are you kidding me??
paloma541 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After slogging through 72 gut-wrenching episodes of this Turkish series, the whole thing ends without an ending. Prepare to feel completely manipulated.....

DEFINITE SPOILERS.....

Although there are some worthy aspects to Çalikusu, chief of which is all the stunning acting of the two principals Fahriye Evcen and Burak Özçivit as well as many others, the show adds up to some less than satisfying entertainment. It contains moments of great poetic and musical beauty, which I'm guessing are hints of the treasure of traditional Turkish culture, and also the potential of a beautiful love story.

Set against these positives is some tediously repetitive theme music, which, although pleasant for one or two episodes, has long outworn its welcome by the time you've seen 10 episodes, and I'm being kind.... Parts of the story are ridiculously slow, as if the directors are simply filling in time slots on TV and stretching out the story as long as is humanly (or inhumanly as the case may be) to do so. I'd say you could make a really nice series covering the story perfectly in half the running time.

What annoys me more than anything however is the "will they-won't they" get together tension. Is there a final split at the end of this series? It seems that there is, and if so, then it's just plain cruel to the viewer as well as not really believable. The main character, Feride (the Lovebird), abandons her wedding at the last minute because of some incompletely revealed supposed infidelity of the groom. In case you are still reading but haven't seen the show, the only indiscretion comes during a drunken moment after Feride has decisively broken up with her beau Kamran, and so is not an infidelity at all. Hearing a reference to some vague liaison is enough for the main character to chuck a lifetime's trust and relationship without even confronting her fiancé to get his side of the story. She doesn't even ask the "other woman" Azelya what exactly happened, nor does Azelya, who supposedly likes Feride better than all the other characters in the story, bother to enunciate or clarify the fact that Kamran is not at all guilty of infidelity. This sort of impulsive and shallow act the heroine Feride brags is her finest achievement. At this point, I've lost all respect for the character, and thus ends all of the viewers long-awaited hopes for any sort of final happiness or resolution.

In fact, her behavior reminds me a lot of the last Turkish series I viewed, Kurt Seyit ve Sura, where a heroine casts off her beau of several years without giving him the chance to defend himself, for unfaithfulness after she had already given him the boot.

This seems to be a theme in Turkish drama that makes no sense, rendering the heroines repellent. Do these women expect to tell a man "it's over" several times, then get miffed if the guy goes off with another girl in an attempt to drown his sorrows? Can this behavior really be considered so unforgivable? Why doesn't someone tell these women they have no right to make demands on a lover they have rejected. I can't understand it at all, and despite being a woman, I find myself on the hero's side yet again.

The ending is loose enough with the hero waiting at a train station, the clock hits 11:30, "Is she coming?" --we never find out! I felt cheated completely, and fairly angry at having spent so much time watching it. Considering that so much of the story consists of evil people plotting to foil the central lovers, which is of course infuriating, you'd think at least they could let us have a sweet wind-up after all the suffering.

If there are any knowledgeable people here on Turkish drama, please let me know if this is typical for Turkish TV series, because if so, I don't want to spend anymore time on long long long agonizing but doomed love affairs....

Be Prepared to Commit Your Life to Watching TV!
debrahill-3391322 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was well and truly hooked from day one. The sets, scenery, language and costumes are beautiful, as are the lead actors. All of the characters are interesting and you find yourself captured by this family and their tumultuous lives. I have knocked off a couple of points because although I don't know the book, from what I have gleaned, the TV series is not strictly faithful to the book. For example, I'm not sure why Feride is called Lovebird, when in the book it is Wren. I am also amazed that a catholic boarding school at the turn of the century would be so liberal and people continually listened at doors usually making incorrect assumptions. I feel that after such a long series, the ending was rushed. It was as if they were expecting a second series, didn't get one so had to finish the story in one scene.

Loved this show, but...
jr-6210027 March 2018
I gave my rating an 8 only because of how it ended. I really loved the show. I only hope they give us another season to end it for real, not leave it to our imaginations.

Aaah, I want to be fall in love again!
afam-6439928 October 2016
This is my first review ever, but I have made extra effort to do it as I have never experienced such a lasting and lingering impact on me from watching a drama.

Hats off to the directors for the fresh take on a classic story. And deep respect for the actors, especially Burak (Kamran) and Fahriye(Calikusu) for bringing to us their exceptional on-screen romance. The sets, the costumes, the Turkish traditions that are portrayed have made me fall in love with this culture.

I have watched many western and eastern romantic movies & serials but none had this lingering and wanting-to-see-more affect than this serial.

Thank you Netflix for bringing this serial to US. What a great way to help us understand other cultures and see the beauty in them.

If you're deciding whether or not to watch you should watch it!!:)

i don't know if i l have this opinion because of I'm actually Turkish but i love this show. i really love this two: burak and fahriye they are great couple and have this amazing energy when they are together. this show represent our culture back those ottoman empire's day. deride is stubborn innocent, hard on the outside but soft in the inside kind of girl and kamran (not kamuran like it misspelled in here) is a kind, passionate boy who, at the beginning, was with neriman but when time passes by he get to know about deride and loves what he learns. actors and actresses in this show are very talented. i think burak and fahriye are stunning couple who looks good together and i love that fahriye can cry without a movement in her face and when burak smile his eyes shine with joy. this is one of my favourite shows and it certainly is my favorite Turkish TV series. you should watch it if you can cause it's amazing

Great Series
terilovesjesus23 October 2016
This series is so good!! You will not be ab;e to do anything else. I am American and watched this series with subtitles on Netflix and loved it. The two main Characters capture you into to their lives and hold you intensified and emotionally on edge. Bravo, Bravo! My only complaint is I wanted more... the supporting cast was wonderful too!! The writing is so good with many phrases I will carry with me in my life. Each character was fully developed and realized. Okay their were times I needed the main characters to just have time to be happy and I had wished I had gotten more of them at the end but that was because I felt like i lived these lives with them. I think this series represents the Muslim culture beautifully too!

One of a kind
anusriyam23 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
While i loved the first 16 episodes immensely..the next 14 episodes were hard to watch.. my beloved characters started acting weirdly, new characters were introduced with storylines that were not given a proper conclusion..kamran had a "they were on a break" thingy..and there was a very hasty ending to what would have been my favourite series till date.At one point , i even feared about the happy ending and even though it happened, it was bittersweet. The leads with whom i fell in love with, shared their happiness, sadness..ultimately were not given a proper ending..where is my closure? However i take solace in the fact that these two are happily married to each other in real life..but the ending left me disappointed.

Loved it!!!!
zsofuc10 October 2016
I have to say This is my first Turkish movie other than the ones directed by Ferzan Ozpetek. The sound of the language is beautiful. Many times I thought of Jeremy iron in " Brideshead revisited."It is beautifully written. Extremely well crafted story telling. The acting is excellent!!! I believe it is a masterpiece that should definitely get international recognition. The editing is seamless , not only the two main characters shine but they have an excellent talented supporting cast. It gives a beautiful insight to Turkish culture at the beginning of last century while modernity is starting to dawn on them. I could not stop watching it ! Great job Netflix on adding it your library!!!

what happened?? i'm confused
neshasouthport-13 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I found this romance/drama on Netflix and I got stuck on it right away. The main couple is so adorable. I even got my mom on it. But on Netflix, it has a total of 72 episodes, that is a lot to binge through. So, considering the drama is basically a soap opera, i started to skip ahead. I know terrible idea, but with all the fast forwards happening, I just had to know where the main couple ended. Anyway, I just finished the show on Netflix, all 72 episodes and I am so confused. Is this show over? Or still going? Where did the daughter come from? What happened to the pregnant sister? Or the health inspector with the little girl? or the evil ex? did that second couple at least get married? Originally, I wanted to rate this 7 but all this questions are going to mess with my head for a while. So, although I still love this couple, I 'm rating it 5stars. It's a great romance.

A hidden treasure
laurabrad18 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a fan of period pieces you will fall in love with this story just like I did. The actors who play Feride and Kamran (Fahriye Evcen and Burak Ozcivit) have extraordinary chemistry and the beauty of their relationship builds up slowly and is mesmerizing to watch. The supporting actors, cinematography and costuming is also exquisite. My only complaint is that I wish they would have either continued the story to its proper conclusion (it is based off a classic Turkish novel) or at least gifted us with a more satisfying ending. Regardless, I'm very thankful that I found this little gem on Netflix and have added it to my list of all time favorites. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Love
rachelgemini30 December 2017
I loved this show, I just happened to have seen it but I loved the whole thing. Only bad thing I could say was the ending. It was odd. Just left me confused. I'm thinking she showed up and hoping she showed up. But I wish it had a better ending starting from where she left her wedding. Other then that I was hooked.

A Taste of Turkey
emassey2005-103-4281758 October 2016
Calikusu is a glimpse into Turkish life when the Mullahs controlled civil society.

Similar to Downton Abbey, where the lives of the servants are also reflected, it tells the love story of two cousins.

As an American, I had to overcome my own cultural sensibilities to accept what for us is considered an incestuous relationship. To see it endorsed and encouraged proved a bit difficult for me in trying to appreciate the tale.

It doesn't hurt that the lead actor resembles a young Omar Sharif or George Clooney. The sumptuous landscapes, poetic language, and great acting contribute to a lovely story. The actors' expressions animate their feelings in a realistic manner.

For bellydancers, especially, the music and dancing should resonate, as the show features some belly dancing. The language also fascinates me from a linguistic perspective, noting some similarities to Russian, my college major.

Phenomenal!
luaneraudabaugh28 April 2018
I am completely enamored with the beauty of this Turkish soap opera. Such a beautiful love story between Kamran and Feride. No matter how people try to tear them apart it will never happen because they have such a true commitment and love that developed while they were so young and just flourished as they grew. I love the wonderful acting, characters, set, music, costumes everything! What the main characters have to endure is just so heart breaking, including what Mum, Dad and Necimye have to endure too. I thought American soap operas had conniving characters but Turkish soap operas beat them by a long shot. I will be so sad when I am done with this series, I have to get the book and read it too.I would recommend this to anyone who loves excellence in all areas of production.Bravo to all who put together such a magnificent production!

Greatest love story of all time
debrakdott30 May 2017
Superb acting by all characters, excellent background music, consistency of story, beautiful period clothing, location filming perfect, wonderful family dynamics, masterfully done. The ending is too short and leaves audience wanting more of Kamron and Feride and family. I have watched 3x, am learning Turkish, have read the book and plan on visiting turkey because of 'Calicusu'.

Not for affectionate or unconditional love expecters
madhankumar-675097 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched so many turkish movie but this one is one of the worst cause it makes me to right my first bad review. Even I thought, when I see reviews are good I must watch this movie. I watched this series in seven days, first it gone slowly, in centre it gone fast and atlast it is fast. Ending is incomplete. Hero character is like sleeping with women other than heroine and heroine will shows her courage and anger only to hero. In this series there is only ful of problems. The problems blinded the love between them because they show the problem first and love next to that near scenes so we automatically think what going to happen is sad scene. I know because of the reviews you wanted to watch it and you can by having less affectionate movie in your mindset and I hated the title name at the end.

Beautiiful Turkish Comedy/Drama
karen-loethen28 October 2016
Calikusu (Love Bird) is a dramatic serial showing the growth of love between two cousins in Turkey during the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the last century. The sets and costumes are richly detailed and so beautiful. I adore the music and THANK YOU to the translators and the casting. The story is set in the wealthy home of Feride's aunt and uncle. Young Feride is tragically orphaned as a young girl and is brought up by her loving aunt and uncle where she slowly falls in love with her attractive, kind, and humorous cousin. Their relationship grows with the tumultuous family history. I have enjoyed the journey, the false identities, the youthful games, the colorful parties, the family squabbles. LOVED IT!

One of the best love stories EVER written
lynette_beckles13 September 2018
Beautifully written and portrayed by beautiful and skilled actors. The story is simply amazing and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire series. Too bad they could not fund the second season which causes a skid of an ending.

My heart hurts 💔
lizfy445 February 2023
Love this show , I'm only part way through but I'm hooked, Burak Ozcivit can do no wrong in my eyes who wouldn't fall in love with him. I'm dreading the end for two reasons, one reason isI don't know what I'll do when it's finished it has really affected me what a beautiful sad at times frustrating love story and second reason is some of the reviews here have said the ending is disappointing and leaves viewers wanting a different ending. But I've still a way to go yet so I'll just enjoy . I love all the characters bad ones and good ones ,I gasped out loud at one scene, I've cried and smiled, it will stay with me for a long time, my friends won't watch anything with subtitles, their loss !! Wonderful .

What a lovely story!
tbursoni19 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching a 72 episodes, with subtitles on a long weekend binge of LoveBird! Fell in love with Feride and Kamran and the rest of the family. Beautifully done, wish the story could have continued and ending with a happily ever after though. My only disappoint. I am glad the real life, Fahriye Evcen - Feride Burak Özçivit - Kamran are now married.

I've read an article that says: After months of searching, Kamran finds the duo in an inn and tells Feride to meet him at the train station the next day to return home with him so they can be a family again. Kamran waits for Feride at the station, the train arrives and Kamran smiles, implying their return.

I must now go back and rewatch the ending, not sure of his smile in the end.
