After another four-year wait, Lorde is back with a new album. She announced Virgin, out June 27, on social media.
In a text blast to her fans, Lorde shared the credits for the album. It was produced by her and Jim-e Stack with contributions from Dev Hynes, Daniel Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, and Buddy Ross. “100% written in blood,” she added. The album cover looks to be an x-ray of a pelvis, with a visible belt buckle and Iud in the blue tint.

Lorde has dropped “What Was That,” the lead single from her upcoming fourth studio album and her first original solo release since 2021’s Solar Power. Since then, the New Zealand singer has hopped on the remix of Charli Xcx’s “Girl, So Confusing” and contributed a cover of “Take Me to the River” to the Talking Heads tribute album Everyone’s Getting Involved.
Set to a spare bassline and gently undulating synth, the deceptively ebullient “What Was That” finds Lorde setting a nostalgic scene in characteristically elegiac fashion: “I wear smoke like a wedding veil/Make a meal I won’t eat/Step out onto the street, alone in a sea.” Produced by Lorde, Jim-e Stack, and Dan Nigro, the track gradually builds in intensity to a cathartic release, as she unpacks the trauma of a years-long courtship: “Since I was 17, I gave you everything/Now wake from a dream.

After wiping her social media page and website, Lorde used that clean slate to tease what sure sounds like a bit of new music.
On Wednesday, April 9, the musician shared a 15-second video on TikTok showing her walking through New York City’s Washington Square Park. The clip was set to a song that suggested Lorde might be returning to her moodier synth-pop roots following the sun-bleached sounds of her last album, Solar Power.

An action-packed adventure with a 90’s backbone awaits viewers in Netflix’s The Electric State starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
The film also features the voice work of Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate and more. Based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, the film watches Michelle (Brown) and Keats (Pratt) venture into the dangerous Exclusion Zone and the heart of artificial intelligence firm Sentre to try and rescue Michelle’s brother. The politics of robots vs. humans fall to the side as each of them has their own robot companion, and they meet more on their adventures to track down Christopher (Woody Norman), who Michelle was told died in a car accident that also took the lives of their parents.
Several 90’s needle drops play in many different scenes from the more sentimental ones to the high-adrenaline ones. Some are performed by a piano-playing Taco robot.

After three decades in the making, Doctor Dark, The Residents’ new album — and three-act opera — has arrived.
Marking The Resident’s first studio album since 2020’s Metal, Meat & Bone: The Songs of Dyin’ Dog, the new album speaks to the group’s irreverent and confrontational style. Across its three acts, it blends heavy metal, avant-garde experimentalism, and symphonic flourishes (orchestrated by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Edwin Outwater), ultimately entangling the songs in an unpredictable, nightmarish web of sound.
Amidst these arrangements, the band tells a story that combines elements of the tragic teenage suicide pact that led to Judas Priest’s infamous 1990 subliminal message trial and the life of physician-assisted euthanasia enthusiast Jack Kevorkian, taking a stark look at misery, life, and death, with a theatrical flare of gallows humor throughout.

Take Me to the River is a psychological family drama, building tension to a breaking point for an incredible ending. Directed by Matt Sobel, featuring Logan Miller, Robin Weigert, and Josh Hamilton, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was praised for its subtle tension and complex exploration of family dynamics. Set in rural Nebraska, the movie centers on a family reunion that takes an unexpected turn when a troubling incident involving a young girl stirs up long-buried family secrets. Sobel’s use of ambiguity and minimal dialogue contributes to the film’s unsettling atmosphere, leaving audiences questioning the characters' motives and intentions.
While Take Me to the River didn’t make a huge impact at the box office, it received generally favorable reviews from critics for its gripping performances and slow-burn storytelling. The film’s ambiguous tone keeps viewers engaged as they are led to question what truly happened between the characters.

Growing up in Texas in the 2000s, new-generation rap-rock star Teezo Touchdown was largely unfamiliar with Talking Heads. But as he was making his own records and plotting a stage show, some of his colleagues thought he’d be inspired by the band and called up a clip from its 1984 concert movie, Stop Making Sense. “The opening shot of David Byrne coming out with a boombox and doing ‘Psycho Killer’ — I had a true discovery moment,” Teezo recalls. “With what he was doing, and the production and the visuals, they had the total package.

Hayley Williams and her Paramore band members have a tape they’d like to play for you. Not long after parting ways with Atlantic Records to become an independent rock band, Paramore is teasing a partnership with A24 to release a 16-track Stop Making Sense tribute album inspired by the life-altering album and concert performance by the Talking Heads. While details remain a mystery, the project teases “16 tracks from 16 artists.”
Paramore is singer Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York, and drummer Zac Farro. Recently, the band created a panic among its fanbase when rumors about them breaking up circulated online. The nail-biting occurred when the band removed its website and scrubbed its social media platforms. However, the band has no intention of parting ways—quite the opposite. In addition to announcing the Stop Making Sense tribute album, Paramore will support Taylor Swift on her sold-out Eras arena tour in 2024.

2023 has seen a surprising rise in the popularity of concert movies. While it is certainly not the case for every concert film, most end up being basic recordings of live shows, put out on DVD and streaming services for fans that either couldn't attend the gigs or thought that seeing their favorite artist live 15 times in a row just wasn't enough. Concert films rarely make a noticeable dent at cinemas or in the public conscience, outside of fans of said artist, but 2023 has seen a drastic change in the cultural zeitgeist, with concert films directly affecting and influencing the decisions of major studios.

Watching “Stop Making Sense” in 4K IMAX at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was a transporting, immersive, joyous experience. Some of us also saw the 1983 Talking Heads concert tour promoting their fifth album, “Speaking in Tongues”; when Jonathan Demme saw the show, the director asked if he could document the concerts. The band, who admired Demme films such as “Caged Heat” and “Melvin and Howard,” loved the idea.
Demme shot the film over three performances in December 1983 at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. Four months later, it was in theaters and grossed $5 million. Forty years later, the band holds the film rights. They worked with A24 to release the restored 4K version for its exclusive IMAX run on September 22 before heading to conventional theaters September 29 around the world.

At a Toronto International Film Festival that saw its wattage dimmed by a SAG-AFTRA strike, it took a Talking Heads reunion at the 40th Anniversary of Stop Making Sense to crank up the festival’s volume to an 11 in Spinal Tap-speak.

The new A24 re-release of the Jonathan Demme concert film, which moderator Spike Lee billed as “the greatest concert film ever,” is a 4K Imax restoration.
And the night literally lived up to the large format exhibitor’s slogan “Watch a movie, or be part of one” as Talking Heads bandmembers David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz and Lee himself got up and danced during such numbers as “Burning Down the House” and “Once in a Lifetime” during the screening. Talk about a cinema-surround show.

Talking Heads have released the new, deluxe edition of the soundtrack to their seminal 1983 concert film, Stop Making Sense. Stream the album below.
Commemorating the 40-year anniversary of the original concerts that were filmed for Stop Making Sense, the new soundtrack features remastered audio of the full setlist, as well two previously unreleased recordings, “Cities” and “Big Business / I Zimbra.” Physical copies also come with new liner notes from the band’s four members, in which David Byrne explains that the energy of the songs was lifted by the excitement of the audience. “In many ways, these versions are more exciting than the studio recordings,” he wrote.
The release comes as A24 is gearing up to bring the film version of Stop Making Sense back to theaters next month, on September 22nd. The news of the movie’s theatrical return broke this past March, and arrived with a trailer showing...

A24 has revealed the full official trailer for their 4K restoration re-release of this documentary Stop Making Sense, directed by Jonathan Demme and first released in 1984. Widely considered one of these best concert docs ever made, this classic is getting another chance to shine. "This year, we're bringing Demme's groundbreaking 1984 Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (newly remastered in 4K!) back to theaters worldwide." The live performance was shot over three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre in December of 1983, and features such memorable Talking Heads songs as "Burning Down the House," "Life During Wartime," "Take Me to the River," "Psycho Killer" and "Once in a Lifetime." Fresh off his appearance on IndieWire’s Best Performances of the 80s list, David Byrne will be bringing down the house — hopefully packed movie theater houses.
A24 is gearing up for its re-release of Jonathan Demme’s adored Talking Heads concert documentary “Stop Making Sense” at TIFF and in a Global IMAX Live event on September 11, with the film rolling out to the general public in the weeks after. Watch the trailer below.
The distributor had previously released a 40-second teaser that showed Byrne picking up his laundry and getting back… the big suit! The comically oversized, boxy suit the buttoned-down singer/songwriter wears during the latter part of the concert during songs like “Girlfriend Is Better.” In that teaser, he put it on again and did his trademark wiggle, the awkward-chic moves that, along with many other things, have endeared him to audiences the past four decades.

Stop Making Sense is returning to theaters later this year, and now, the Talking Heads concert film is getting a shiny new soundtrack to go along with it. Rhino is issuing an updated deluxe edition on August 18th, complete with the film’s full setlist as well as two previously unreleased songs.
Filmmaker Jonathan Demme conceived the idea of Stop Making Sense in 1983 when he caught Talking Heads on tour supporting new album at the time, Speaking in Tongues. By the end of that calendar year, the filmmaker shot three concerts at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater, and the final product was released the following year. For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to see it at the time, it’s set to arrive in theaters again via A24 sometime in 2023.

After sweeping the 95th Academy Awards with seven monumental wins for Everything Everywhere All At Once, A24 plans to release the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense in 4K for a theatrical release! Director Jonathan Demme’s first concert film is my favorite concert experience ever captured on film. The phenomenal performance by the Talking Heads changed how I listen to music. If you’ve seen the original, there’s little point in watching “Goodnight Mommy,” out now on Prime Video. Yes, that 2014 film did not feature a performance by Naomi Watts as the mother who is tortured by her twin sons, but that’s about the only added bonus. This “Goodnight Mommy” Enligh-Language redo, from director Matt Sobel (“Take Me to the River”) and writer Kyle Warren, is strictly for those who haven’t experienced the chilling Austrian original from filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala and are also weary of subtitles.

"Goodnight Mommy" is now streaming on Prime Video — no, not the original 2014 Austrian film, but the 2022 American remake or "reimagining," starring Naomi Watts, Cameron Corvetti ("The Boys"), and Nicholas Crovetti ("Big Little Lies"). The film, per the official synopsis, tells the story of twin brothers who "arrive at their mother's country home to discover her face covered in bandages" and begin to suspect that "the woman beneath the gauze isn't their mother at all." Director Matt Sobel is at the helm of this new version, and he knows you may have questions about it, chief among them being, "Why remake it at all?"
In an exclusive interview with /Film's Danielle Ryan, Sobel explained that he had a similar line of thinking when he was first approached about the possibility of spearheading an English-language version of "Goodnight Mommy." Based on the 2015 Austrian horror film of the same name from writers/directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, Matt Sobel’s remake of Goodnight Mommy, starring Naomi Watts falls very much in the column of why bother when weighing the benefits of an English-speaking version versus a craftier, often scarier incarnation.
In the opening frames of the film, twin brothers Elias (Cameron Crovetti) and Lucas (Nicholas Crovetti) are dropped off by their father to spend some time with their mother (Watts) at her country home. Almost immediately, the pair sense that something is amiss with mom and, as they watch the bandaged woman purporting to be their mother, the twins begin to suspect that something sinister has happened to their actual mother, possibly even involving this obvious imposter.
Even the appearance of local law enforcement, in the guise of Officers Sandy (Crystal Lucas-Perry) and Gary (Jeremy Bobb), does little to...

Watching the remake of a horror movie is a lot like watching a magic trick after you know how it’s done. You may have lost your sense of wonder at the trick itself, but if they’re doing it right, you’ve got an even deeper appreciation for the skill and showmanship of the magician.
The words “if they’re doing it right” are doing a lot of heavy lifting in that paragraph. Matt Sobel’s remake of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s “Goodnight Mommy” tries to pull off the same mysteries and revelations from the original, but for some reason Sobel is doing it without the majority of the scares.
So much of the film’s brutality has been removed in favor of melodrama and CGI fake-outs that it doesn’t matter that the cast is bringing their A-game. The game has already been called due to lack of interest.

Director Matt Sobel doesn't really like remakes of foreign horror films for American audiences, but he wanted to try and do something a bit different. In his latest, "Goodnight Mommy," coming to Prime Video on September 16, 2022, the director tackled a new take on the 2016 Austrian film of the same name. The 2022 "Goodnight Mommy" stars Naomi Watts as a mother who has undergone some changes, and Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti as her twin sons who don't know if they trust her anymore. It's an intimate thriller with bits of family drama, following the boys as they try to figure out what happened to Mother.

Having starred in the U.S. remakes of The Ring and Funny Games, Naomi Watts leads another American reimagining of foreign-language horror with Goodnight Mommy. The original 2014 Austrian feature, co-directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, was a visceral psycho-chiller about mother-son ties twisted by distrust and withheld affection into a vicious nightmare. It was a fiendish exercise in exactingly controlled tone, atmosphere and ambiguity, which paid off with a final-act reveal that effectively recalibrated the entire story. Matt Sobel’s overhaul tones down the cruelty and eliminates the more grotesque touches, resulting in a chamber drama that never gets under the skin.
Premiering Sept. 16 on Amazon, the film is middle-tier streaming fare — well-acted, visually slick and powered by an ominous orchestral score from Alex Weston that loads up on heavy sawing strings. But that music struggles to do the unsettling work that...

Here we go again, but not in the way you might be expecting. The 2014 horror hit "Goodnight Mommy," is getting an American reboot and we now have the film's first trailer.
The sneak peek for the Prime Video original showcases Naomi Watts in the title matriarchal role. Much like the first film, the movie follows a mother reuniting with her twin sons following a cosmetic surgery that requires her to wear bandages around her entire face and head. Slowly, the boys start to suspect their mother, well, isn't who she says she is, and they join forces to unmask her and find out the truth.
The remake stars Watts alongside Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, while "Younger" star Peter Hermann rounds out the cast of the film. "Take Me to the River" director Matt Sobel helmed the film from a script by Kyle Warren, who is known for his work on Fox's short-lived "Lethal Weapon" series.
