How Meta...
SlaughterFilmPodcast10 January 2019
From writer Arend Remmers and director Adolfo Kolmerer comes Snowflake, a twisted tale of murder, revenge and forgiveness that also seems to take an interesting look into German society, and how we can all learn to get along.

Snowflake kicks off with a pair of brothers, Javid and Tan, who unknowingly murder the parents of Elianna - an attractive twenty something year old, who seems to be pretty well off as she has a family bodyguard who she turns to for help in hiring a hit-man to exact her revenge on Javid and Tan. This endeavor doesn't go as smoothly as she hoped as the hit-man, and soon hit-men, turn out to be deranged murderers who she can't reason with, movie obsessed deliverers of cliché one-liners or neo-Nazi fascists who ALL fail to carry out the hit.

Javid and Tan learn about all of Elianna's hit-man dealings from a script found in the backseat of a car they steal. This script, titled "Snowflake", goes into precise detail recounting everything that the brothers do as they do it. The script is about them, or, IS the movie you're watching. Here is where I would include some joke about the film being meta, but this is something that I'll address in a bit.

The brothers then use the script as a guide to staying one step ahead of Elianna's killers.

If any of that wasn't enough to grab your attention, the brothers also meet a blood covered angel, Elianna is referred to her hit-men by God and Hyper Electro Man dished out some superhero vigilante justice to a small army of neo-Nazi goons...are ya still with me?

Several other critics have referenced Quinton Tarantino and his film Pulp Fiction when describing Snowflake. This is largely due to how the film's narrative is, at times, non-linear. It has several stories, or groups of characters, that intertwine as their events unfold. With each pass, more is uncovered about the character's backstory, their motivations and their relationship with one another. This is a great, and not so easy, way to tell a story that organically adds an element of mystery and intrigue.

Upon watching the trailer, I thought to myself; "What IS this?", "How are all these things happening?". And the answer to those questions is that Snowflake is layered with interesting and colorful characters of all walks of life - mostly murderers. I think it's one hell of a creative story and my hat goes off to Remmers and Kolmerer for being able to blend all of the characters and story elements together so well. The acting is tight and there seemed to be real chemistry between the actors.

Not only does the film balance murder and death while also being clever, fun and funny, it also seems to be socially aware. In recent years, Germany has been forced to deal with an "immigration crisis" generated by welcoming over one million migrants and refugees into the country. Since then, there has been much debate whether or not this was a good idea as it's raised many social and security concerns.

I could be reading too much into this, but Snowflake seems to have borrowed from these events slightly. Without giving too much away Javid and Tan's adventure begins as teenagers when their family home was burned down - killing their parents. A sinister act carried out to eliminate blighted properties and their poor minority inhabitants. This seems to echo real life sentiments with rising class tensions and fear of what problems these migrants may bring with them. As a result, there isn't enough elbow room for everyone to get along without their fears getting the better of them, and without them feeling wronged in some way and retaliating.

As depicted in the film, this sends the brothers on a path of destruction and murder as they search for those responsible for their parents death. And this is where I think Snowflake delivers a powerful message about society - how we act, and then react to eachother. As the brothers seek revenge, they senselessly and casually kill Elianna's parents. She in turn seeks revenge and hires hit-men. Here we have a viscous cycle of death, revenge and suffering.

After Javid's run in with an angel, he learns the benefits of patients and forgiveness and tries to prevent he and Tan from becoming the villains in their own story, literally. How Meta (And now we've come full circle folks).

Snowflake became surprisingly enlightened and positive by the end, which wasn't something I expected from a story so fantastical.

I thoroughly enjoyed Snowflake, and I highly recommend checking it out if you get a chance. Of course I wasn't the only one who enjoyed Snowflake, as it won awards for Best Feature Film and/or Best Directing at Cinepocalypse Genre Film Festival, Negative Fest, and Horrible Imaginings Film Festival among others. It was released earlier this month on BLU, DVD & VOD from the fine people of Artsploitation Films.

Fun and original
Sergiodave21 April 2020
Very hard to describe this movie without giving anything away. It's a movie about a couple of bad guys, a scriptwriter, a women out for revenge, an angel, a god fearing preacher and some nazis. Think of a mix between Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith and you might get an idea. I found the movie both original and fun to watch, give it a try.

A radical, smart, action packed and hilarious thrill ride for Quentin Tarantino & Kevin Smith fans alike - from Germany!
torsten-dewi-119 September 2017
I have waited way too long and have seen way too many miserable German films - but "Snowflake" is my reward, the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow of shite.

Not since "Run, Lola, run" has a film blended action, humor, violence and smart dialog so perfectly. It's also a brilliant meditation on the nature of movie making and determinism/free will.

It's nigh unbelievable that - due to a lack of studio or network support - this was actually filmed over the course of four years (mostly on weekends). It looks absolutely polished, never openly betraying its very limited budget.

Is it flawless? Almost. Sure, the final act could've done with some minor trimming, the title is a bit bland and the sections that were shot in English are a bit more awkward than the rest - but these are minor quibbles.

Watch it in German, if you can - watch it with subtitles, if you must. But watch it. You'll have one hell of a time.

"Unique" is not the same as "worthwhile," and also, this movie is not at all unique
zettaichan8 November 2021
Reviewers calling this movie different and special missed the '90s, I guess. After Pulp Fiction hit big, endless wannabe auteurs tried to imitate Tarantino in a thousand smarmy, self-referential, ultraviolent movies. Almost 25 years later, Germany made another one. Here it is.

Snowflake pushes it a little further by literally including the screenwriter in the story, but even that isn't new. Every potentially interesting concept here was already done better in Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation in 2002. Hell, it was done better in a Will Ferrell movie, 2006's Stranger Than Fiction.

Any time Snowflake threatens to explore its recursive ideas even a little, it quickly diverts into boring gun violence, interspersed with the occasional dental torture scene or cannibal serial killer for an equally dull and derivative change of pace. If you've ever wanted to be bored by a disemboweling, this is your film. Yes, eventually you'll get to see a blind martial artist fight an electro-powered superhero for about ninety seconds, but you'll have to sit through TWO FULL HOURS of squibs and gouting red corn syrup to get there. There's nothing stylish or inventive about the gun violence; does 'bullets fly, people fall down' even qualify as "action" at this point? It's just padding.

There's just enough here to fill out a trailer and make it look gonzo and inventive, but you could edit Snowflake down to a five minute short without losing much. As it is, the one or two cool moments aren't worth the time investment for the rest of this very boring revenge-cubed plot pile. I can't stress enough that this movie is 121 minutes long and the entire plot is "All characters want revenge on other characters, so everyone onscreen shoots everyone else until they run out of fake blood and go home." Don't waste your time.

Different kind of ...
kosmasp12 February 2018
When you read Snowflake (english title), you may think this is about politics, but it has absolutely nothing to do with that. So in case you were thinking in that direction, forget about it. I actually don't know if there could've been a different title for this movie. It is really something crazy and almost unique. At least for Germany and it's filmmaking culture.

This really goes full throttle when it comes to crazy. It takes one idea and runs with it. No prisoners taken. That means it may have issues from time to time and the movie feels like it's done in chapters (when you realize it was shot over a period of 4 years, mostly on weekends, due to money/funding problems, it makes sense) ... if you don't mind that and like movies to take it to the next level, break the 4th wall (and any other walls nearby with it), then you could do a lot worse. This is fun and silly, but especially driven to be different. And it very much succeeds in that regard. If you have an affinity for low budget movies with hillarios ideas ... come on in and enjoy the show!

WTF did I just watch?
name99-92-5453899 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
WTF did I just waste two hours of my life watching?

This movie starts off as a lousy Tarantino imitation, you know the two heartless criminals discussing the fine points of fast foo cuisine in the midst of death and chaos. Lousy because, unlike Tarantino, there is nothing interesting or comedic in their observations.

OK, at that point I'm ready to kill it, but we switch scenes to a second story line about a young woman whose parents have been killed and she wants revenge. So, let's give it a few more minutes, see how it plays out. And if we'd stopped there, maybe this could have been adequate, a German twist on Tarantino, with the lousy dialog attributed to translation and different cultural assumptions.

But no, then we get the third story line where the screenwriter himself enters the script. And at that point it all falls apart.

The thing you have to understand about "philosophical" movies is that they are not created by philosophers, and they are not created for philosophers. It turns out that the number of people who are both GOOD philosophers (actually have an interesting and novel analysis of the world) and good filmmakers is basically non-existent; and that the market of people who actually care about good philosophy is not much larger...

And so, when you are told that a film is "philosophical" or "makes you think", remember what you are ALWAYS seeing is a mediocre person's impression of what smartness looks like. Doesn't matter whether it's The Matrix or Being John Malkovich or this movie.

So what's the point of our screenwriter being in the movie? No clue! I think at some point there was supposed to be a theme regarding pre-destination and free will, and the screenwriter wisely appreciated that he couldn't make those into very interesting points, but didn't want to take the time to remove that whole subplot from the script.

As a second theme we have yet another amateur who thinks he can do The Oresteia one better (essentially "what should people do about the desire for personal vengeance") and who again gets lots because he doesn't accept the full moral choices and failures that make The Oresteia work. The Oresteia is about saying that "we need the state because we need an impartial judge to end the cycle of violence"; you can't make that point when your starting point is (deliberately or implicitly) that the state is incompetent and corrupt!!! And bringing in a Deus ex Machina to take the place of the state? Give me a break! That's not a solution, that's a tweeners revenge fantasy.

Basically: as philosophy this takes on two themes (maybe three if the Snowflake/Angel theme is supposed about redemption or something? That was so muddled I couldn't even see what it was TRYING for) and fails badly at both.

So what's left is the Tarantino-lite/action side of the movie. Yeah, that's adequate, but, only barely so; honestly, why bother? There are so many *good* action movies, why waste time with a lousy one?

Thank you for this Movie
loewleon23 December 2018
I have to say, although i'm German, that our movie industry sucks... We are producing one unfunny comedy with Schweiger/Schweighöfer after the other and our glory days in filmmaking are long gone, nearly forgotten by some... but then there was Schneeflöckchen a brillant, funny and bloody movie from some friends who wanted to make something different... and they totally nailed it.

Well, the story was seen before but not with those twists and strange characters and on top of that, it maybe started a new wave of cinema for Germany, but we will see about that in the future. All i have to say is, that this is a fantadtic movie with a brillant ending and a bright future to look forward to.

Special thanks to Capelight, who made a cinema run for the movie possible...

Finally Germany made a great fantasy film.
rudigerkleinmanagement16 September 2017
I really loved this film. Saw it at the Fantasy Film Fest in Berlin. Finally Germany has made a great fantasy film. It's a great plot too: Someone murdered their families and these guys have to hunt them down, but they get caught in a wicked fantasy. It's soooo Berlin of the future. Very original. Hooray!

Bold, radical, highly entertaining and playing with your mind :)
bdshoefer2 October 2017
I do not rate movies that often, as most simply don't interest me enough. Have to make an exception here and share how impressed I am! But no spoiler ;)

This fairy tail piece of art keeps you in its grip from the first second on, plays with your sympathy and keeps your mind occupied, as basically nothing happens as you would expect it.

For a comedy, there is a lot of bloodshed (maybe don't watch with the kids). Nevertheless, the jokes are witty and amusing and before you know it, the movie is over and leaves you enthusiastic and somehow enlightened.

And wondering what sick idea they will realize in their next movie - I can't wait!

Proof that German movies can be cool
PaxtonMalloy15 October 2017
This movie is a much needed breeze of fresh air in a country where most of the movies take them-self way to serious. Snowflake is so unusual, so funny and first and foremost so entertaining. The cast is tremendous. Doesn't matter if it is the both leads Reza Brojerdi and Erkan Acar with their banter or Alexander Schubert as the screenwriter or on screen legend David Gant. Also the look is what really elevates the movie. The cinematography makes you think you are watching something with a much higher budget that they actually got, all crowdfunding by the way. I hope that this will make it's way into movie theaters nationwide and even internationally eventually but nonetheless I have no doubt in my mind that director Adolfo Kolmerer will make his way as well as Arend Remmers who delivered this incredible script. Snowflake delivers on every level. Go watch this movie and enjoy it as much as I did.

Original story what result in one of the better German movies I saw
deloudelouvain25 December 2018
Out of my head I can't recall if I saw alot of good German movies before, but if there is one thing for sure is that I will remember this one. They came up with a very original story, entertaining and worth watching. Not only is the story original but it's also well told and filmed. In the end the whole weird thing is just making sense. As for the cast I don't know any of the actors but they did a very good job. All ingredients to make a good movie. And it has some good humoristic parts that made me laugh more then once. Schneeflöckchen will please people that like weird stories. A German movie that I will remember.

If Coen Brothers, Tarantino & Polanski had a baby
verbosity-119 July 2022
If your idea of German cinema was bratwurst, this movie will show you how Deutsche cinema can be cool, stylish and make a masterpiece for a shoestring budget.

It's shot on Canon Mark 3d III camera with hacked magic lantern software exclusively, on a shoestring budget, where all actors worked for free.

In that context, try making a movie as engaging, narratively brilliant and entertaining as Snowflake! Great acting, over the top, it will satisfy your funny bone and your need for an action thriller. Probably the most fun movie I have seen in 2022, and I have seen plenty!

Great directing, screenplay, music, dialogue and action. I usually fast forward slow scenes in movies, and I didn't get a chance to pause. Watch this hidden gem, you won't regret it. #NewWaveDeutscheCinema.

An intersting spin on a classic genre with few flaws
cassianjoseph18 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this movie today and was surprised at how goods it relay was. I had been expecting some Hansel and Gretel witch hunters ripoff but was surprised by the movie. I enjoyed the quick witted humor between Javid and Tan and the absurdity of of Eliana search for a assassin but there were a few problems I had with the movie. My main complaint is the origin of Arends abilities is it magical or is it because of some time machine, Either way couldn't Javid and Tan force Arend to write that they went back in time and saved their families from the fire, Also what purpose did snowflake actually serve other than to die did she really have any affect on the story I mean surely would've still saved Jaavid and Tan after all he is a hero. Because of these issues I didn't enjoy the ending as much as I would've liked to but overall it was still a great movie thank you for the enjoyable experience.

My Review Of "Snowflake"
ASouthernHorrorFan5 January 2019
"Snowflake" is aptly titled, it is a rare and unique film that almost defies label, genre or description. The story is part pulp crime thriller , and part alt comic meta script. As I sat mesmerized by the method , and mesmerizing nature of Kolmerer's storytelling I could only think of a few other times I have watched this kind of cinema- "Pulp Fiction", "Southland Tales" and to some degree "Go".

The story is layered, and ambitious, almost operatic. "Snowflake" gives a story with microcosms of revenge, motive and the mundane. All of which are told in a style that makes each character elaborate and superior. The cast give quality performances and feel authentic in their extravagant nature. Much like each and every character Tarantino creates, and just like Tarantino, Kolmerer's feel real.

The special effects are almost non-existent, and quite frankly irrelevant. People die, little onscreen splatter is celebrated, but you don't think about that. The cinematography is excellent, the atmosphere is nearly stoic and seems to breathe. The writing is exceptional and creative. "Snowflake" is a wonderfully unique, conception thriller that just has to be seen.

Definitely unexpected.. well done.
bdeszell11 August 2020
I didn't know what to expect from this movie. I watched it because one review compared it to a Quentin Tarantino type film. Hence, I had to see it. I really enjoyed it. It was well acted, gritty (with a sense of humor), unique, and all with a solid storyline. I enjoyed the characters and the underlying tone of revenge (I'm a sucker for these films, I can't lie).

This film is a one of those hidden gems. Just watch it.
