Not really worth it
naomi-5736418 August 2018
The storyline is pretty messed up and hard to understand, unless you've played the game. The game is a lot better than the anime, so if you're interested in Diabolik Lovers, do yourself a favour and play the game instead of watching the anime. The only good parts were the extraordinary animation, voice acting and the music. The rest isn't that exciting.

Good music, art, voice acting, okay-ish story and characters, but that's it
auroranavarro25 November 2016
Let me tell you, as someone who was once a die-hard fan of this show, I look back on this and I just want to scream. Yes, it all makes more sense when you've played the game and all that, and based on what I've read the game is way better. But I'm not reviewing the game here. I'm reviewing the anime.

I would just like to say that I adore the music and the art. And the voice acting was incredible--especially in the subbed! The dubbed was okay, but in all honesty the voices don't really fit the characters (mainly Kanato and Laito). If you really wanna watch this, I recommend subbed. Kudos to all the voice actors, artists, and musicians that worked on this! Aaaaand that's about it for my praises.

Oh, dear...where do I even begin with how unhealthy this is? It basically takes the whole concept of "No means no" and pours it down the drain, which is a mentality that countless people have fought against for so many years only to have it be essentially PROMOTED in a show aimed at horny teenage girls!

Many people criticize Yui for being such a weakling, but I would like you to think of it this way: she's nice, she wouldn't swat a fly, and these boys will LITERALLY RAPE HER TO DEATH AND/OR SUCK OUT ALL HER BLOOD IF SHE TRIES TO LEAVE OR FIGHT AGAINST THEM. I honestly think that Yui is extremely strong for keeping up with them for so long. Which is sad because that just tells you how horrible the boys are. (Except Subaru. He's okay). And throughout the show, all this abuse and mental torture is subtly portrayed as sexy and desirable.

The story's okay. It makes more sense in the game, but we're not reviewing the game. And to be 100% honest, there is a fair amount of characterization in the Sakamaki brothers that makes sense once you know their backgrounds, something that's way more fleshed out in the game. But what are we not reviewing? The game!

"So why not just play the game and review that instead, Rory?" you're probably wondering. Oh, I don't know why! I honestly don't know why. It's almost as if I, just one among many many people, don't have the console required to play it, on top of not knowing Japanese which is not a language you learn in a day. I really don't know why. It's such a shame, people actually having to properly flesh out characters and story lines rather than rely on the source material that not everyone has access to. Such a pity...

If you really want to watch this show, then go ahead. I can't stop you. But be warned: there's many a disturbing scene. If you find yourself utterly disgusted or on the opposite end, turned on, I encourage you in either scenario to close the episode and take a nice walk outside after having set fire to your eyeballs for a few minutes.

MY OPINION
caringann17 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion(which is why I'm here) this anime could have been alot better if they would have taken more of a story to it. This sort of reminded me of a vampire male attraction focused anime that could have been alot better if they would have added more substance and potentially added some horror or thriller aspects to it. The beginning doesnt really make sense because it kind of rushes everything at the end. I had to watch the last episodes like 2 times to get the ending because I never played the games I only found this in the anime horror section on Hulu I think. I get that it is chavaunistic and antifeministic but we all have those things we watch where we know it shouldnt happen in real life ever because it is not acceptable so we explore it in art like anime. There are tons of songs, tv shows, books, and art works that we still listen to or look at that dont respect women or represent what we truly are in modern society which is not sex tools and symbols. This anime is good because it's bad in my opinion and it's different even if the story sucks. You'll either love/hate it or just hate it pretty much tbh. They should reboot and redo the show it has alot of potential I think. Anyway I'm done soapboxing now enjoy your shows ya'll!

Basically a Twilight rape fantasy...
sygtnok2 May 2014
In short: Do not waste your time on this unless you are into boring rape fantasies and being bitten and abused on a daily basis.

At first, I thought this looked interesting. The beginning of the first episode when the female protagonist arrives at the house hooked me on and kept me hoping for more of the same... At least for three episode which was when I decided to drop the series.

The story is built on a Japanese dating sim for girls with the same name as the series. A girl arrives at an old mystical house to live there after her father has to move because of his job. Inside the house she quickly discovers that the habitants, 7 brothers, are vampires and that she is meant to be their bridal slave. From here on she gets scolded on heir manners at the same time that she is sexually assaulted, bitten and threaten with rape and death constantly, without ever fighting back at all and actually seeming to like it, or at least accept it a bit.

Basically, this is a female rape fantasy for female Twilight fans. And yes, it's as sick as it sounds. And quite annoying and boring at the same time. Several of the vampire characters annoys me greatly but most of all, the little whimsy spineless fragile girl protagonist is extremely annoying and adheres to the most man-chauvinist ideas of the past centuries and the fact that this is made for girls just makes it even more pathetic. Not to mention that the entire genre of kitty-punk Gothic vampires and dresses is just sad and removes everything great about vampires and, for me, put this in the same category as Twilight even though the vampires doesn't shine like diamonds here at least (but that's properly the best thing about this series).

I understand the need for fiction to outlive taboos and perverted fantasies that we can't, or wouldn't really like to, live out in real life. And up to a certain point, Japanese manga and anime should be applauded for being more liberal and dealing in a safe and unharmful way with such fantasies and pervasion's. But this is just sad. And boring. And especially the fragile girl aspect, as well as the unfolding of social and physically abuse as socially acceptable is both annoying and plain wrong, also in fiction. Already it is hinted that she can find a deeper more satisfying relationship with her would-be rapists and murderers. This slave-mentality (reference to Nietzsche) of accepting abuse is actually a personality trait that can develop in real life with people being routinely abused by the same people that they have the closest relationship with, like incest or a abusive boyfriend, thereby distorting their view of what to expect from a normal relationship. And the way it so unproblematic builds this in together with the male-chauvinism really is what makes this sick and for me, this is basically an example of some problematic aspects of Japanese culture.

Again: Do not waste your time on this unless you are in to boring rape fantasies and being bitten and abused on a daily basis. And if that's the case, maybe you should think about getting help.

Messed up
adinkens11 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm honestly not even sure how I ended up watching this show (I don't even like anime?), but I did. I ended up watching the whole season to see if it would even shape up to be anything that made sense, but *spoiler* it didn't. The basic plot is that this poor girl ends up living in a house full of naaasty vampire boys who rape her a lot. It's disturbing that that was the main focus of the show and how it was romanticised. I did not watch past the first season for obvious reasons.

Reverse harem with creepy vampires
Tweekums17 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This twelve part anime opens with the protagonist, seventeen year old Yui Komori being, sent to a large mansion. When she enters she discovers a boy who appears to be dead; much to her surprise he awakens… he is a vampire as are his brothers who also live in the house. It looks like this could be the end for Yui but one of the young vampires says that she must not be killed. This doesn't mean she is safe though; they have no intention of letting her leave and all enjoy drinking her blood. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that they are keeping her alive for a sinister reason!

This shojo series was surprisingly disturbing as Yui's relationship with the vampire brothers was distinctly abusive; there may not have been any actual sexual activity but the way they drank her blood felt like a metaphor for rape. As one might expect the brothers are typical bishonen types; which only served to add to their creepiness and to be fair they are all creepy in different ways. The story was okay but took a while to really get going; early episodes were mainly taken up showing each of the brothers forcing Yui to offer her blood. That said if you want to be disturbed without seeing anything really disturbing you should enjoy this. Unusually the episodes are only a quarter of an hour long but that is better than trying to stretch the material to fill a normal length episode.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

This is so accurate I laughed
brittanyreneeparks10 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This series....or rather this abomination is what I would call a trainwreck that never had itself on rail. Visual novels aren't easy to adapt. In fact, recent years has shown that many anime series never lives up to its original material that result in disappointed fans. However, there are also some VN adaptations that are so horrid, so atrocious, so dreadful, so disastrous, so unappealing that it can be in a category of its own. Diabolik Lovers belongs to the category for failure with all its rights. This show is something of a tragedy - an anime adaptation that is almost an insult to the brain to watch.

Diabolik Lovers is an anime series adapted from the visual novel of the same name. Zexcs handles its production and from one of their more recent notorious series known as Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil), it's their chance to step up to the plate again. But only this time, we deal not with a gym clothes but instead with vampires.

The series begins with a young girl named Yui Komori who we know almost nothing about. Well, on the surface, we know that she seems to be a normal girl with a sweet personality. However, I would describe Yui as an empty doll. Why? Well it's because she is constantly being played by the guys of this show. She takes the role of a toy and the boys just loves to have their play time. Of course, the guys that plays with her aren't exactly normal. No in fact, they are vampires. They view Yui as a meal nearly every time their eyes are set on her. She is their happy meal and they're loving it.

Yui also gets treated by the vampire boys as almost a dog on a leash. In essence, she becomes exactly what a frail girl is - helpless, pathetic, and unresisting. On various occasions, she tries to get out of her situation typically involving rape-like scenarios but finds it ever so difficult to do so. It's a story gone wrong with Yui being the heroine. No matter how girlish she is, there's no limit on her stupidity and how she deals with her new lifestyle. Whether it's at home or at school, she submits to her tormentors without ever trying to escape. To make matters worse, she even compliments on the guys in hopes of getting a break. The result though? Vampire rape, hickeys, and blood scars.

As an anime series aimed at a female audience, I suppose the guys have some appealing features. Most of them are designed to look aristocrats and behaves as such. In their minds, they are the masters of the mansion and Yui is their dog. The only difference is that instead of the guys feeding them, it's the other way around. Most of them have contrasting personalities ranging from Shu's laziness, Reiji's demanding attitude, Ayato's aggressiveness, Kanato's unstable mind, and Raito's sadism. Regardless their differences though, they all want one thing: Yui's blood.

The construction of the story is absolutely ridiculous. There is almost no plot development or characterization; there is never in fact any character development since all of them sees Yui as food with their vampiric eyes. Most of the early episodes focuses on the guys whom each gets his chance to spend some time with Yui. These usually end up with Yui losing blood and crying herself to tears. Are we supposed to feel sorry for the girl? Perhaps but with what she's doing, there's a complete sense of hopelessness for her. Each of the guys also seems to have some sort of history as demonstrated by occasional flashback scenes played throughout the series. Unfortunately, it's never really fully explored so it's up to viewers to guess in their heads. The story itself also assumed contain a form of romance but usually comes out in an atrocious way that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Artwork wise, there's nothing really special with the way the characters are designed besides their outfits. Their eyes reflects those of a vampires so some of them are noticeable. The mansion the characters live in has some artistic value with an English-like architectural design. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of the series obliterates any sense of artistic value since it twists around the idea of sexual abuse.

The soundtrack is mediocre at best with an eerie like background. The way the show handles itself hardly comes as any special in terms of OST because most of the time, you'll be listening Yui fighting for her life and screaming her lungs out. The screams she lets out is a cry for help but no one ever comes. I do give some credit to the ED song though as it creates a sense of darkness. Additionally, the show's sadistic voice tones of Ayato and Raito gets the job done in that field.

Diabolik Lovers is the perfect example of how to not adapt a shoujo anime series based off a game. The shows' sadism and vampire rape tones is almost an insult to viewers itself. Yui is one of those characters that is unbearable to watch. At various times, I found myself siding with the vampires since they at least have a control of their characters' degree. Oh and the humor? It's blend as dry paint. It tries to add some humor to its dialogues but this comes out as awkward and senseless. Thank goodness each episode is less than the typical 24 minutes or I would of screamed my lungs out for it to be over. Ultimately, I did stick around the show to see how it developed or ended. Unfortunately, it proves once again just how much of an abomination it really is.

Really Good!
ashhappy26 July 2020
When I first watched the series I have fell in love with it. I don't really understand how many people gave it a 1 star since this is a really good anime series to watch if you look vampire with romance and stuff. I know some of the episode are a little messed up, but that's not really the point, it's about vampires sucking blood obviously there would be a lot of messed up scene. Overall, I really loved the series and I hoped they make more of it

It could be better.
erhhhh062 June 2023
Now, I personally really like the show, especially the characters, however the storyline, Cordelia fans and Yui kind of rub me the wrong way. First off the storyline is a bit dull, second of all ANYONE that LIKES Cordelia is gross af, and third of all it's utterly disappointing that Yui is so down right pathetic. Now, I love her, but I hate how she has been written and portrayed, I wish she was stronger (not necessarily physically) but mentally and I wish she wasn't so clumsy. I love her a lot, so I defend her, but I find the way she was written disappointing. As for the boys, I like them, I do not appreciate what they do to poor Yui, but I'm in love with their character designs and personalities. Kanato is definitely my favourite in my top five along with Subaru, Kou, Laito and Reiji. I don't really like Ayato that much, but he's cute I guess. 😒 So overall, I don't entirely hate this show it's 100% cringey but I think that's why I like it, it's stupid, sometimes quite good, and blatantly pretty bad, but to be entirely honest I think it's so bad that's it's kind of good.

An anime created with heart, but it failed massively.
tanqianpeng2 July 2017
Diabolik Lovers is one of the worst anime out there due to its' abysmal writing. On the plus side, the animation is incredibly good for something like this. Also, the voice actors really seem to enjoy voicing these guys! As a result, I give it a bonus 2 points. But, it can't make it completely awesome, as the writing and the characters matters. The characters are always feeding on the girl's blood, and that's incredibly gross. Also, the writing seems to be a sadistic twisted version of Twilight. I like it and I loathe it as a result.

briannaclarke-474095 February 2020
Yes, I used all caps. I hope they make another season because I just CANT GET ENOUGH. Not a spoiler, but I feel like at the end of the 2nd season, I really connected with the characters and got to see a side of them I was always dying to see. I DEFINITELY recommend watching this tv series. I am not a huge fan of anime, manga myself. I usually just watch like Vampire Diaries, Grey's Anatomy, ya know stuff like that. But I really enjoyed this tv show from START to END. VERYY satisfied!!!!

It's not super bad
abimbolamariam30 April 2019
It's not bad but it's not good. To start of she doesn't get raped. It's just that thes vampire boyz just bite her ne k without her consent and harshly. She is being harassed and sexually harassed and verbally abused. She is like lifeless doll who should have left after the first day. She developed Stockholm syndrome. The character that annoys me the most is laito.

Great art and voice acting but still, wth
josies-7593018 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Let's just set one thing straight here; the whole plot of the story (both seasons) is the girl (Yui) gets her blood sucked by vampires. That's it. That's how every episode goes. And if you're thinking it still might be a good watch, you're dead wrong. The girl doesn't consent to anything, and every time a scene happens where her blood is sucked it feels like I'm watching her get r*ped.

Along with the r*pey vibes I get from watching it, the story just feels incomplete. The first real story arc just gets randomly cut off with Yui killing herself and being brought back to life with no explanation to the woman possessing her before. Nobody tells us what happened. The second season ends on a cliff hanger.

Judging by the r*pey vibes from this show, I don't think it'll survive in modern day society. It would definitely end up on the twitter trending with people saying how disgusting it is.

I only watched both seasons because I HOPED that it would get better. It never did. The episodes were basically just repeats of the previous; one brother gets to spend some time with Yui, and at the end of their hangout they suck her blood until she literally passes out from blood loss. The brothers have no concern when she passes out and just lay her down on the nearest chair or bed. Almost every episode starts with her waking up from these experiences.

Another problem with the show is the main character, Yui. I get that she's supposed to be a shy, quiet girl, but god dammit, no girl would allow this stuff to happen to her. She doesn't even try to fight back when getting her blood sucked, and it's even suggested by a character that since she doesn't resist, she must like it (which is THE R*PIEST MOMENT OF THE SHOW). She has so many questions and half the time she doesn't even try to get answers, like who the hell is her dad? And when she does ask questions, she gets vague answers that leave the viewer just as confused. But we never get an answer. The second season ends without explaining what the hell is going on, or what the whole deal with the Adam Eve thing is. It just ends with her "getting her freedom and choice" which should've been a thing since the beginning.

The only good part about the series is the character designs themselves. I'm not fond of most of their personalities, but most of them are very aesthetically pleasing to look at. Although that's kind of ruined when they sexually harass the main character. The voice acting was also very nicely done, and you could tell the cast did a lot of work into getting into character.

Overall, it's just a very weird. It seems like someone's fetish but made into a full anime. I'll most definitely never rewatch this series. Also, one more thing to add that personally ticked me off for no reason; the sound effect made when the vampires bite Yui. It's sounds like they're biting into an apple and personally it just doesn't sit right for me. Makes it seem all the more like they just think of her as food.

I love this anime
ireneih14424 October 2020
It's like 6 different love interests pursuing one woman at the same time along with chilling horror backdrop for that extra adrenaline rush. I love it because it's not like the other million animes out there. This one is hauntingly beautiful with excellent voice acting, beautiful artwork, and a mysterious storyline. All the while being romantic and seductive at the same time. I love this more than Twilight and Buffy and Vampire Diaries and that overrated show True Blood. Diabolik offers ingenuity and something different and new. It is unique. I hope they make many more seasons. I am tired of all the conservative animes where the woman can't so much as a hug a guy without having to push herself away for being too "touchy feely." I love how this shows takes all that traditional mush and throws it out the window. It is a more daring show and more fun to watch.

Boring & repetitive
breekittenmitten4 September 2022
Annoying. No sensible plot whatsoever. You'd have to play the game to get any backstory or clarity.

If you like abusive bdsm romance, or getting bitten frequently this is for you. It has a very stylistic animation (the hair choices especially). Lots of contrasting colors, and the house is especially beautiful.

Male characters are all incredibly overbearing with almost no redeeming qualities. Each scene feels drawn out and repetitive, because they all just want to hurt her constantly. They're pretty basic archetypes who don't stray far from the mold. Not much character development throughout.

Female lead is pretty dumb but I guess that could be from constant blood loss

If you make it through season 1, don't bother with season 2 it doesn't get better.

Still watched it twice to make sure I didn't like it.

Really good, but the girl...
otaku-wildcat8 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The anime itself is really good. The plot line is very though out and we can really get in the psyche of the vampires,but...i would give it a 10 out of 10 if the chick in the anime wasn't that stupid. She can have ANY guy she wanted (lets face it they are all damn fine)and she decides that she will run away from them. When one of them, mostly Ayato, pin her down to drink her blood she can legit hit them where the sun doesn't shine, but nooooo... she is gonna sit there and cry. I was all up in here STRESSED like:"Girly grow some balls!Stand up for yourself!". The boys are fine, the plot is fine, the original manga and game fine, the anime girl NOT fine. The End.

alaskaforbes22 April 2019
To start off I like vampire stuff and anime why don't I like this let me explain. The horrible writing. The characters. You know why don't we just say the entire anime is what's wrong with it. So why didn't I give this 1 star well the art style is quite pretty. Let's leave that as that before I start ranting on the atrocity that is the second season, yes I watched both seasons.

Honestly this anime is very awesome and the idea behind all these guys wanting this "bride" and her just kind of lost and going back and forth and just kind of of learning all the different vampire's personalities.. Its honestly very well detailed and very enjoyable. And I enjoyed watching it and watching the newer ones. Definitely something to watch!

This honestly was actually a pretty decent anime!
Irishchatter30 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I found that this anime was quite good! At least its not like 'Twlight' or "dance with devils" with bored vampire stares and a group of guys singing poorly to a girl. This anime was far from that, it actually does give you goosebumps that are kinda sexy in a way and that'll make you be turned on by some of the scenes!

I even like the main characters backstory where she is considered a vampire herself but she was actually adopted by a priest. However he asked to stay in the house where the vampire boys live since he was going overseas. I mean, it is interesting in a way that a priest who is "meant" to be vampire haters, can ask vampires to look after his adopted daughter for him. I swear I have never seen an anime have that kind of plot before and that's why I like that this anime is different!

I definately wouldn't consider putting this as the top 10 worst anime out there, it's rather one of the goodish ones out there! Dislike this review if you think I'm wrong but I felt it was good enough! That's why I'm giving it a 8/10!
