Sex & Nudity

  • Two characters kiss passionately
  • A scene in a bedroom where two characters kiss and unbutton clothes (no nudity). The man says "you really want me, don't you?", to which the woman replies "I do". However, the scene ends before anything more happens when they are interrupted.
  • A husband and wife share a non-sexual kiss.
  • A girl is changing clothes and a man sees, however there is no nudity- she's wearing Victorian undergarments that cover her whole body including arms and legs.
  • One of the plot themes is a character feeling powerfully attracted to another- in some scenes, the sexual tension is quite obvious.

Violence & Gore

  • Quite a lot of violence, i.e. gunshots, people being drowned by being held under water, domestic violence, an attempted rape, punching, stab wounds etc. This is disturbing and upsetting more than anything else.
  • There is one scene of gore when two characters are shown stabbed in their home- you don't see the stabbing, just their dead bodies and pools of blood.
  • Many characters have multiple cuts and bruises on their faces.

Profanity

  • A few uses of bloody, and a few uses of goddamn. The language has been toned down a lot due to the setting.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One character is a very bad alcoholic, and is shown drinking spirit directly from the bottle on multiple occasions.
  • Many glasses of beer and ale are shown being drunk within the Inn itself, and the people there all seem quite drunk.
  • One character appears to be drunk throughout the whole 3 episodes.
  • A character is given a drink with a drug in it which makes her drowsy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The whole miniseries is extremely dark and upsetting- it is always a grey sky or raining, and there are no happy scenes apart from the very last one.
  • The wrecking and drowning scene is very, very upsetting and hard to watch.
  • Joss Merlyn is a very intense character, and the way he treats Patience and Mary can be hard to watch.
  • The whole concept of not knowing who to trust is quite frightening, and the idea of smugglers is upsetting.
  • A character who is supposed to be good actually turns out to be evil, and a believer in human sacrifice, which is an extremely intense scene, the climax of the series.
  • A character is mercilessly hanged- you see his lower body and the noose afterwards, and hear very graphic sounds as he dies.
