Grace Helbig, YouTube star and former host of comedy talk show The Grace Helbig Show on E!, has posted an emotional video revealing that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Helbig said she was diagnosed with triple-positive breast cancer about a month ago, which she was told was “super treatable and highly beatable.”
Calling the news both “shocking” and “surreal,” Helbig said: “From every doctor or medical professional or person who has any knowledge about cancer they have said it’s super treatable, highly beatable. We’re going for cure not remission here. Which is exciting, encouraging, helpful, good.”
Helbig she learned of the diagnosis after noticing a lump in her left breast and reluctantly told her gynecologist about it during her annual exam.

With the September 23, 2017 debut of Dirty 30 and the September 26 premiere of Laid in America, Hollywood has presented us with two studio-backed low-budget films featuring many prominent social-media influencers. Traditional Hollywood has finally joined, to borrow influencer Michelle Glavan’s phrase, “the YouTube movie circuit.”
That means traditional studios are finally trying a newish model for making and marketing films that are the polar opposite of their usual blockbuster behemoths. The model emerged about three years ago, when indie producers and multichannel networks like AwesomenessTV tapped squadrons of influencers for roles in films such as Expelled and Camp Takota. This model has resulted in small films that typically are profitable, relatively low risk, and can connect with young audiences who otherwise ignore traditional studios.
Previously, the big media companies focused more on buying up multichannel networks (e.g. Maker Studios, Machinima, Collective Digital Studios) and tapping influencers to promote their products.

When aspiring actress Mamrie Hart started her YouTube show “You Deserve a Drink” in 2011, she had no idea she would be making her first feature film just three years later. Back then, Hart’s friend Grace Helbig had a bit of a following on her own channel, and she decided to give it a whirl. One million subscribers later, and Hart found herself a bona fide YouTube star. Cue feature film deal.
Hart previously penned the script for 2014’s “Camp Takota,” also starring Helbig and “My Drunk Kitchen” creator Hannah Hart (no relation). According to industry insiders, “Camp Takota” saw big returns for producer Michael Goldfine, though exact numbers are unknown. Naturally, the trio fans have dubbed “The Holy Trinity” made a follow-up.

Called YouTube’s “Holy Trinity,” stream queens Mamrie Hart, Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart are the gals you wish were your pals, because they always seem to be having so much fun.
The Internet sensations boast more than 5.5 million followers on YouTube, 4 million followers on Instagram, and 2.5 million followers on Twitter. Unlike celebrities who take on a wide range of roles, Helbig, Hart and Hart (no relation) have made a living being themselves and inviting viewers into their wacky worlds.
The trio returns to the big screen with their latest film, “Dirty 30,” a comedy about an epic thirtieth birthday gone wrong. The story follows three friends who are all stuck in a rut: Kate (Mamrie) is turning 30, lacks a dating life and spends her days at a middling job, Charlie (Hannah) has the girl of her dreams but can’t get her act together, and Evie (Grace) is married...

In Dirty Thirty, Mamrie Hart will start as Kate, whose friends (played by Helbig and Hannah Hart) throw her a huge 30th birthday bash in order to cheer her up. In the new trailer, viewers see the Holy Trinity in action. We also get a few glimpses of several guest stars; among them are fellow YouTube stars Anna Akana, Chester See, and Flula Borg, all of whom will appear as party attendees.

A movie starring two YouTubers will make its money back in iTunes sales, regardless of its quality. That may sound like a good thing, but it’s not if you’re an online content creator looking to transition into traditional Hollywood projects and shake your reputation as a one-trick pony. Speaking from the sixth VidCon, the annual convention for digital content creators and their fans, creator Jimmy Wong is uncertain about his and others’ crossover prospects.
“It’s really hard to transition YouTube stars into traditional acting roles,” says Wong, who rose to YouTube fame with his viral hit “Ching Chong! Asians in the Library Song” — a timely response to an ugly, racist video rant.

Screaming tweens. Boy bands singing Drake. People talking to video cameras. VidCon, the annual convention for all things YouTube, vlogging, and digital media, is certainly a sight to behold. The term “content creator” is rarely thrown around quite so often as it was in the hallways of the Anaheim Convention Center last weekend. If one thing is certain, digital culture is a lot more advanced than it was a few years ago. What can we surmise from VidCon about the future of the industry that has better numbers than the views on “David After Dentist?” This is real life for the digital age.
The Freshmen Online Stars Are All Grown Up
Grace Helbig, Jenna Marbles, and Hannah Hart each began vlogging in 2008, 2010, and 2011, respectively. In Internet years, they’re ancient. Now, they’re credited with shaping the style and creating a language for a form of digital media that is now over ten years old.

It’s all fun and games until the cops get called, right? YouTube sensations Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart have reunited for a new comedy, “Dirty 30,” and just like its title suggests, the film details an epic 30th birthday rager gone bad.
The story follows the three stream queens, as lifelong friends stuck in a rut. Kate (Mamrie) is trapped in a job she hates, sucks at dating and is on the cusp of turning 30. Evie (Helbig) is married but has in-laws from hell and Charlie (Hannah) is recently engaged but can’t seem to pull her business (or her act) together. When Kate’s birthday arrives, her two besties vow to throw her the wildest party and make her have the time of her life. What they unleash is a lot of fun, and a whole lot of chaos.

Vimeo announced today its acquisition of Ott subscription platform Vhx for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 2011, Vhx offers distribution tech that has helped more than 1.5 million content creators gross roughly $9.6 million by selling content directly to their audiences. Some of its bold-faced titles include the Aziz Ansari standup special Dangerously Delicious as well as influencer-led films like Camp Takota and Expelled.
The acquisition of Vhx’s platform will bolster Vimeo’s own efforts to help creators build Svod services within its budding ecosystem of 280 million video-makers and viewers -- which it says includes individual creators, niche programmers, and major media entities.

Luminary digital influencers like GloZell Green, Frankie Grande and Brittany Furlan have banded together for a new PSA that aims to put out home fires -- a startlingly common tragedy, according to the American Red Cross, that claims roughly 7 lives every day.
The home fire awareness campaign, dubbed 2Steps2Minutes, features top stars advocating that viewers practice a fire drill plan that takes no more than two minutes, and to check their smoke alarms every month.
The Red Cross created the cheeky spot in collaboration with YouTube channel What’s Trending, media giant iHeartMedia, The Charity Network and Reveal Project, a seller of socially conscious merchandise. It was directed by the Brothers Reidell -- of Camp Takota and Bad Night fame. Check it out below.

Netflix has announced a new series led by a YouTube star, and it will be a groundbreaking endeavor. The streaming video platform will release Haters Back Off, a scripted series that will star Miranda Sings, the ridiculous alter ego of content creator Colleen Ballinger-Evans.
Haters Back Off will run for eight episodes. It will follow Miranda as she soars to digital greatness despite her complete lack of talent. The most exciting part of the series is that it will be scripted; according to Variety, this is the first time a YouTube star has landed her own scripted TV series.
Of course, as it will be distributed by Netflix, Haters Back Off won’t be a TV series per se, but it will still have the production values and format of a typical cable show. The series will be a first for Netflix as well; the streaming platform has acquired...

In July, Supergravity Films brought The Chosen, a horror-thriller feature film led by social media star Kian Lawley, to Vimeo On Demand. A little more than a month later, the movie came to iTunes, which it ultimately rose to the top of the horror charts. Now, The Chosen is moving on to its next distribution platform: It has arrived on Netflix.
The Chosen’s availability on Netflix was secured thanks to a deal between Supergravity and the streaming video platform. The horror flick joins several other films led by YouTube stars that can also be viewed on Netflix. Camp Takota, starring Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart, and Grace Helbig, is on there, as is Cameron Dallas vehicle Expelled.
Both Camp Takota and Expelled delivered strong sales through on-demand platforms before arriving on Netflix, and The Chosen is no different. Its rise to the top of the iTunes horror charts demonstrates the appeal of its young star.

YouTube stars Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, and Hannah Hart are reuniting for another film, this time with the support of a major Hollywood studio. Lionsgate has bought the rights to Dirty Thirty, a comedy about a birthday party gone awry that'll serve as a follow-up to the trio's 2014 hit Camp Takota. Unlike that film (their first feature-length movie), Dirty Thirty will have the resources of a traditional film — a sign that Hollywood may be grooming your teen's favorite YouTube stars to become legit movie stars. Recently, Smosh (YouTube comedians Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox) had their first feature film, Smosh: The Movie, backed by 2oth Century Fox and Lionsgate; it later opened at No. 2 on iTunes and was acquired by Netflix. Smosh: The Movie is officially a top entertainment choice among digital viewers. On July 24, 2015, the feature film starring the long-time YouTube comedy duo comprised of Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox peaked on the iTunes comedy film chart at #1, and on the service’s overall movie chart at #2.
Produced by both Defy Media and AwesomenessTV, Smosh: The Movie follows the duo as they try to eliminate an embarrassing video of Anthony so he has a chance at love with his high school crush. With the feature film’s official release on July 23, right alongside VidCon and with a lot of press, it’s little surprise the movie managed to land such high positions on the iTunes charts.

Supergravity, which launched in 2014, already has several films on its docket, including Kian Lawley vehicle The Chosen, which will premiere adjacent to VidCon. As Supergravity builds out its library, it is working closely with Vimeo On Demand, with which it struck a four-film deal this past January. We spoke to Benator about Supergravity’s plans, its partnership with Vimeo, and the increasing intertwined media landscape.

Back in February 2015, Grb Entertainment announced the upcoming film Bad Night starring YouTube celebrities Lauren Elizabeth (known as LoveLaurenElizabeth) and Jenn McAllister (aka JennXPenn). Now, the production house, known for reality TV series such as Intervention, has set an official release date for its first feature film. Bad Night will premiere on June 21, 2015.
Bad Night stars Elizabeth and McAllister (who boast over 3 million subscribers between their two YouTube channels) as two high school students who are mistaken for art thieves after they get into the wrong car during a class field trip. Variety, who originally broke the story, reports the Grb-produced film will be digitally released through Vimeo on Demand on June 21.
Directed by Chris and Nick Riedell (of Camp Takota fame), Bad Night is produced by Elizabeth, McAllister, Aj Tesler, and Big Frame’s Byron Austen Ashley and Rana Zand. Daniel Kinno wrote the film’s script, which co-stars...

The trend of feature films led by YouTube stars is not strictly an American phenomenon. British YouTube star Olajide Olatunji, known online as Ksi, and South African vlogger Caspar Lee will star in Laid In America, an upcoming feature film whose cast is filled with YouTube stars.
As TheVideoInk, Laid In America began filming last month and promises exactly what it says in the title. Ksi and Lee will play a pair of friends who cross the pond in an attempt to score with Stateside women. The supporting cast is full of YouTube stars: Timothy DeLaGhetto, Josh Leyva, and Josh Golden will all make appearances.
Laid in America is helmed by a notable YouTube channel as well. Bad Weather Films, a sketch comedy hub, is directing the film and co-producing it alongside Max Gottlieb.
Ksi and Caspar are frequent collaborators who are also two of the biggest stars on YouTube.

Creative Week: Zoella agent and Maker Studios discuss potential for talent crossovers.

Fullscreen’s first ever presentation at the Newfronts was filled with news. Among other items, the digital network revealed the first teaser trailer for #O2LFOREVER, a documentary feature that will follow the recent tour of since-disbanded YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife.
The O2L documentary was first announced in June 2014 as the next project from Michael Goldfine, who served as the producer for the film Camp Takota. Goldfine followed O2L as they participated in The Digitour, which took them to cities around the Us last summer. The teaser shares some of the footage collected from O2L’s tour appearances.
Several developments have affected the film since it was revealed. O2L has broken up, with its members (all of whom are partnered with Fullscreen) focusing on their own channels and other collaborative efforts. In February 2014, Camp Takota became available for digital download. Since then, the feature film led by YouTube stars Mamrie Hart, Grace Helbig, and Hannah Hart has been purchased several hundred thousand times. Now, a production company with an interest in digital stars is looking to add to the film's popularity. Grb Entertainment has announced it will shop Camp Takota internationally at Miptv.
Miptv, which occurs each year in Cannes, France, is one of the largest annual markets of TV and digital content. The 2015 edition runs between April 13-16. Grb Entertainment, which has aired its shows in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan, will use the event to search for international distributors for Camp Takota, which stars its three leads as friends who reunite at their former summer camp.

This Week in TV News is a compliment to the Week in Review feature, which will now be focused on film news.
AMC has guaranteed two seasons to the prequel companion series of The Walking Dead, as per THR. The announcement was made earlier this week, and comes as somewhat unsurprising news. The Walking Dead continues to be one of the channel’s highest rated shows, with its popularity showing no signs of waning as the show’s fifth season rolls along. In addition, AMC has found similar commercial and critical success with Better Call Saul, its new series that is itself a spinoff of Breaking Bad.
There’s no set title for the series as of yet, and working titles have included Fear The Walking Dead and Cobalt. The first season, much like the show that spawned this spinoff, will consist of six episodes, with creator Robert Kirkman working...

Legendary Digital Media and Fullscreen have partnered with YouTube phenoms Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart in an updated version of Sid & Marty Krofft‘s classic 70’s TV series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, bringing the property to a new generation of viewers. Fullscreen will debut and exhibit Electra Woman and Dyna Girl in the U.S. with Legendary Television Distribution overseeing global distribution. Sid & Marty Krofft will executive produce the project.

Both Helbig and Hart have large social media followings with a combined total of over 10 million subscribers and followers over all of their YouTube and social media platforms.

Vhx recently sought out more cash to keep helping creators sell their movies online in an easy-peasy manner. The online video distribution site just raised a $5 million funding round led by Comcast Ventures.
Vhx co-founder and CEO Jamie Wilkinson told Re/code his company has closed about $4.25 million of the funding push. In addition to Comcast, previous investors in Vhx are also returning for the new round, such as Union Square Ventures, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, and Reddit chairman Alexis Ohanian. Wilkinson believes the remaining $0.75 million will be raised via a “strategic investor” by the end of the month.
Since its inception, Vhx has been an advocate for online video distribution, specifically for independent and lesser-known films from creators. The company initially received $3.2 million in its first funding round back in August 2013, and has since gone on to distribute YouTuber Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart’s Camp Takota (as...

There is no question that YouTube celebrities have become legitimate entertainers in 2014. This year, more than any in the past, these personalities penetrated the mainstream of the pop culture landscape. From films to award shows and everything in between, these Internet stars were practically everywhere proving that the millions of subscribers they have online want to see them on more than just their cellphones.
As we say goodbye to 2014, we want to toast some of the biggest YouTubers who went mainstream.
1. Todrick Hall: When it comes to parodies, Hall is person to watch. He skewered everything from Mean Girls (“Mean Gurlz”) to Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango” (“Cell Block Django” starring Mariah Carey and Beyonce lookalikes). In 2014, Hall took things further thanks to his new manager, Scooter Braun, who happens to be the guy behind Justin Bieber’s success. On December 4th, Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos sat down with Peter Kafka at the Code/Media conference in San Francisco. Among other topics, Strompolos discussed the success of Camp Takota, the feature film starring YouTubers Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart. He stated that, when the film arrived on platforms like iTunes, "hundreds of thousands of people bought it." Strompolos didn't give an exact sales figure, but a ballpark guess suggests big-time revenue for Camp Takota. The most basic version of the film cost $9.99, so even if we assume the most conservative estimate for Strompolos' "hundreds of thousands" line, it would put Camp Takota's total gross at seven figures. Strompolos didn't say exactly how much of a profit the film turned, though he noted that "Hollywood would love to have the returns that they had." Camp Takota's success is very relevant for Fullscreen. Strompolos called Helbig "one...

The Fine Bros may be best known for their short-form React series on YouTube (and soon to be on television), but the two fraternal partners are now taking their creative talents to the big screen. Benny and Rafi Fine (who boast over 13.8 million subscribers across three YouTube channels) will write, produce, and direct a currently-unnamed film in partnership with Big Block Entertainment Group. The upcoming movie is set to be a teen comedy filled with a premise of high school growing pains and angst. Here's the logline from the release: Comedic feature film that takes an over the top look at the clique filled world of high school and how the people you grew up with, and even used to be friends with, often become the same people who torment you by the time you graduate....and now it's time for the outcasts to change all of that. Camp Takota is getting a second life on a new platform. The 95-minute film, which stars YouTubers Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart, and Grace Helbig, will come to Netflix on December 1st. The announcement was made via Camp Takota's Tumblr. The deal with Netflix has two key advantages for the film: For one, the move to a new streaming site opens up a second distribution window, which has the potential to revitalize interest in the film nine months after its Valentine's Day release. More importantly, Netflix's subscription-based service could bring in viewers who initially balked at the $9.99 price tag the film carried with it when it debuted on video on-demand platforms like iTunes and Vhx. The arrival of Camp Takota could be good news for Netflix, too. The film is one of the first long-form films to feature multiple YouTube stars as its headliners, and Helbig, Hart, and Hart's fans...

Camp Takota proved prominent YouTube stars can make very successful motion pictures. The direct-to-download feature film about twentysomething besties at summer camp starring online video sensations Hannah Hart, Mamrie Hart, and Grace Helbig was made available for purchase via Vhx and iTunes starting on February 14, 2014. Less than one week later, it was holding steady in the #3 spot on iTunes Top Independent Movies chart (alongside Oscar nominees like Dallas Buyer's Club and 12 Years a Slave) thanks to the nearly insatiable appetite for content of the online video and social media followings of the flick's three female leads. Here, take a look: camp-takota-itunes-charts Camp Takota producer Michael Goldfine of Rockstream Studios (and now Fullscreen) and co-Executive Producers Brian Norgard and Marc Hustvedt of Chill (the pay-to-view online video destination through which the movie was originally set to be released before it closed up shop) placed a relatively risky bet that the aggregate...

The man who helped a trio of YouTube content creators star in their own movie has moved to a major multi-channel network. Michael Goldfine, best known in online video circles as the producer of Camp Takota, will join Fullscreen as its Chief Content Officer. Goldfine's work on Camp Takota was significant because the project marked the most prominent example of a film built on the appeal of YouTube stars and distributed independently through video on demand (VOD) services. Camp Takota, produced by RockStream Studios, starred Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart as a trio of friends who reunite at their old summer camp. Shortly after its release, it became one of the best-selling independent films on iTunes. At Fullscreen, Goldfine's work will "focus on overseeing the development and production of premium scripted and unscripted content," which will likely include more film projects. In a recent recap of The Digitour's Digifest NYC event, I liked the fanatical support for young YouTube stars to Beatlemania. Going by that analogy, the YouTube community is about to receive its version of A Hard Day's Night. According to Mashable, Connor Franta, Jc Caylen, Kian Lawley, Ricky Dillon, Sam Pottorff and Trevor Moran, who together make up the YouTube supergroup Our 2nd Life (O2L) will star in a documentary that will chronicle their current worldwide tour. O2L's six members are all popular YouTube vloggers in their own right, and their combined effort is one of the fastest-growing channels on YouTube. In the past year, it has accrued more than 1.6 million subscribers and added nearly 200 million views to its tally. O2L videos frequently focus on typical YouTube conceits such as themed videos and challenges, but the group's main strength is its collective ability to look great on camera.

Three YouTube stars applied the lessons they learned from building an audience on the web to turn their low-budget comedy into a home entertainment hit. Thanks to the social-media wattage of Grace Helbig (pictured), Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart, ”Camp Takota” sold nearly as well as Oscar-winners such as “12 Years a Slave” and “Dallas Buyers Club” when it debuted on-demand and on digital platforms last February. The filmmakers may not be household names, but on the internet, they're platinum. As a sign of their clout, the film debuted third on iTunes’ independent film chart. The online self-distribution industry is heating up. Vhx, after two years in public beta, has officially opened to the public, offering anyone with a series, film, or other video project a flexible, cheap platform on which they can distribute their work. Vhx first launched in 2012 as a digital distribution platform open to a select few creators. Since then, it has served as the online home of several high-profile projects, including Aziz Ansari's Dangerously Delicious, Improv Everywhere's We Make Scenes, and Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, and Mamrie Hart's Camp Takota. It jump-started its plan to expand out of beta last August, when it raised a $3.2 million funding round for its public debut. As part of its official launch, Vhx is offering its users a price cut. Instead of the 15-20% cut it previously skimmed off the top, it is now taking just 10%, plus a 50 cent fee for each transaction.

Hannah Hart most likely very often gets confused with Katniss Everdeen, because the girl is on fire. The twentysomething amateur chef, apt musician, budding author, and burgeoning motion picture star uploaded her very first My Drunk Kitchen video to YouTube on March 16, 2011. In the three short years since, Hart's gone onto write her very own cookbook (published by Harper Collins' It Books imprint and set to hit the shelves in August 2014), star alongside friends and fellow YouTube phenoms Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart in the very successful straight-to-download feature length film Camp Takota, win a Streamy award, and amass a rabid fan base that's now over one million YouTube subscribers strong.
