But how does it look to Western eyes?
rushknight18 August 2014
I hear that this film grossed a pretty penny where it was made. There are different standards there, and different reasons for watching. How does this film look to a picky westerner?

If you remember the old Barbie commercials that used to air (and probably still do) in commercial breaks during the cartoon hours for children, you will probably understand me when I say that this film gave me a "We're into Barbie Assassin!" sort of vibe.

It felt.. not serious the whole way through. What was I expecting? I guess I was expecting the characters to stay in character. But instead they just sort of flip flopped between being stone cold assassins and girlie girls. Kill a man here, put a giggle there, a sword fight here, a discussion about love there. An emotionless killer one minute and your BFF the next.. It's positively dizzying. Is this a movie about assassins and vengeance or is it about relationships? I guess it's a little of both. But it really came off as more of an erotic story with a touch of "girl power" added.

OK, I can deal with girlie drama. What about the sword fighting and choreography? Unfortunately, things get no better in this department either. The sword fighting is ridiculously overdone. The stunts are cheesy and unbelievable. It's a little embarrassing when your awesome assassins are clearly being "helped" by the bad guys. Try as they might, the girlie assassins still move like girls. The male characters move so much faster and cleaner in comparison, it's hard to believe that the women can hold their own. Add to this the horrendous CGI work, and you have yourself a pretty weak series of action sequences. Trust me, it's bad.

To be fair, the girls were primarily picked because they were pretty. And to that I can testify that they certainly were very pretty.

I'm sorry to say that I was pretty bored overall. Personally, it just didn't entertain me. It really felt like it was trying too hard.

If the room was Vietnamese and had budget then this would had been the movie

Lady assassin is not a remake of the classic Hong Kong movie with the same title, this is a Vietnam ninja martial art comedy movie, with Vietnamese top models vs pirates.

Three girls and one shepherd owns a tavern where the girls serve meals and themselves, but that is a just a cover for what they're bunch of bandits that attack their bates while they are knee weak. But one day they accidentally kidnap a noble woman but since they can't let her go they decide to train her to become an assassin, but she might be more than they think.

The quality is well done, and the martial art is spot on, but the acting is terrible, it clearly shows the models can't act and what's funny is the girls are all model looking and the men are all pirate looking including the shepherd and the dialogues are all stiff despite they speak Vietnamese.

But it's worth it, it's like the room movie but with more budget, and unbelievably that a budget movie can go wrong too.

Interestingly enough as a martial art movie with 3 women against any enemy

An interesting movie about 3 female assassins with one princess who fights for their tavern on the beach.

The movie show beautiful location of Vietnamese beaches and should make it good international.

Some scenes feels a little too much, for example some over-sexual scenes and the infamous singing scene feel a little too much filler.

And also the story of the Lady Assassin is happening too fast, why is the princess kidnapped and why do the 3 assassins want to keep her?

But what it does best is the martial art, sometimes too many wires but it's a fantasy movie.

But it's a good film, I'm glad this movie is out on the market international.

The Lady Assassin is a feisty action adventure that makes the most of cutting edge technology, stunning locations and beautiful girls.

Vietnamese films aren't exactly easy to come by on our shores, especially martial arts movies filmed in 3D. The Lady Assassin is a feisty action adventure that makes the most of cutting edge technology, stunning locations and beautiful girls. Make no mistake about it, the female cast members of The Lady Assassin are absolutely stunning. So much so, it's easy to forgive the films textbook plotting and overambitious set pieces.

Deadly women with dark secrets, evil outlaws, corrupt officials and group bathing sessions are the order of the day here. Nothing too gratuitous, that might upset the Vietnamese sensors, but there's more than enough titillation for those of us growing tired of wire-assisted wonderment. The Lady Assassin is one of the biggest box office hits in Vietnamese history, and as long as you keep your expectations down to a minimum, there's plenty for western audiences to get a grips of too.

Set in and around a traveller's tavern, The Lady Assassin tells the tale of a beautiful seductress and her team of lethal waitresses, who routinely slaughter the corrupt (and not so corrupt) government officials and businessmen who come their way. Before honing their skills in a game of volleyball and washing each other down in a pool overlooking the sea. I may have mentioned that part already.
