Storyline
Did you know
- GoofsThe story involves around a reunion of Home Guards. The Home Guard was stood down in 1944. While its members were slowed to keep some of their uniform, their rifle and ammunition would have been handed back in. There is no way in 1953 these former guards would still have their rifles to parade with.
Featured review
Should have been a classic, but the focus is elsewhere.
The village of Kembleford commemorates the work of The Home Guard, at a ceremony, Captain Fred Howton makes his opinions on his former platoon very clear, soon after an outburst, he is killed, Eddie Devine is arrested.
This had all the makings of a classic episode, I must give credit where it's due, some really nice ideas, whenever they've done a wartime story, they've generally nailed it, the story is excellent, the delivery isn't quite so sharp.
I'm not sure there was an implication that The Home Guard were still in operation, it was more service if memory, but one issue, The BBC's eternal mission to recreate the past, it felt like empty tokenism.
A solid episode, but for me this was one of the weaker entries in this eleventh series, a series that on the whole has been excellent.
I enjoyed the romantic element between Sullivan and Mrs Devine, and it ended on a rather high note.
Come on BBC, get the priorities back on the storylines please.
7/10.
