- Young mother Allyson Field is having a most unhappy Mother's Day. At first glance, she seems to have a life that many would envy. She is happily married to her loving husband Sean and they have three lively, adorable children. However, as Allyson types on her "mommy blog", she is beset with anxiety and feelings of unworthiness. She describes herself as a "freaky clean freak" who actually sees beauty in a padded cell. She has paranoid delusions about her children getting salmonella and child-welfare workers taking them away. She realizes that she is living her simple dream of being a decent wife and mother and feels like a horrible person because of her inner demons..
- Feeling overworked by her children, mother-of-three Allyson (Sarah Drew) decides to go on a moms' night out with her friends, Izzy (Andrea Logan White) and Sondra (Patricia Heaton).
Sondra is a preacher's wife with 2 teenage girls (Zoe (Sammi Hanratty) and one more) but seems always to be in control of everything. Supporting her husband Ray's (Alex Kendrick) career as well as her troublesome daughters, all with a firm hand & always a smile on her face. Izzy is Allyson's best friend since school & now runs a day care center. Izzy's husband Marco (Robert Amaya) has an irrational fear of kids.
Allyson is a neatness and cleanliness freak. Allyson has a hidden fear that one of her kids will drink her cleaning supplies and she would have to call poison control. She fears that they would take her kids away as she has called too many times in a single month. Allyson knows that she has an incredible life, and yet she feels stressed and tired. The 3 kids are Bailey (Shiloh Nelson), Beck and Brandon (Michael Leone).
Allyson has a particularly stressful Mother's Day. Kids cook her breakfast but leave a huge mess in the kitchen. Sean was again travelling for work, leaving Allyson to deal with the kids. Bailey runs out of paper and writes with crayons on the wall. Bailey also insists to apply mascara to Allyson and would cry bloody murder till Allyson agrees. By the time Sean returns home in the evening, the house is already a complete mess. Allyson proposes a Night Out to Izzy and Sondra, & they both gladly accept. She, Izzy, and Sondra plan an evening at a fancy Chinese restaurant. The three expect a night to unwind, leaving Allyson's husband, Sean (Sean Astin), to take care of all the kids. Allyson has planned the mom's night out on a Saturday.
Bridget (Abbie Cobb) is Sean's half-sister who has never taken responsibility for anything in her life. She has a baby Phoenix with her ex-husband Joey (Harry Shum, Jr.). Joey is as non-committal & unresponsive as Bridget. Bridget wants Allyson to look after her son while she takes a night shift at a bowling alley. Bridget was asking for a long-term arrangement and not a short one-night favor. Allyson loves taking care of kids, but this time she refuses as she had planned her Mom's night out on the same day. Sean backs up Allyson's reluctant refusal and agrees to watch Phoenix & his own kids. Bridget storms out, determined to prove she doesn't need their help.
Just before leaving home, Izzy takes a pregnancy test and finds out that she is expecting a baby. Allyson informs that Marco is bringing his twins over as he is paranoid of watching kids alone. Sean asks his friend Kevin (Kevin Downes) to help out with all the kids. Allyson is surprised as Kevin usually hates kids. Kevin and Sean met when they were in the 5th grade and have been friends ever since. They always play video games on Saturday night.
After their reservation is canceled (Allyson had made a reservation but for the following Saturday. Allyson engages the hostess in a debate on the different between "this" and "next" Saturday), Allyson loses it & decides to take everyone to a nearby bowling alley. She locks all their phones in her car as she doesn't want any distractions for the night. Allyson had run into Joey at the restaurant who was on a date.
Meanwhile, their husbands attempt to look after the children, with disastrous results. They decide to take all the kids to Treetop, a kids play area, where the plan is to let the staff worry about the kids. But one of Sean's kids gets stuck in a ride & Sean dislocates his shoulder while rescuing him. Marco & Sean are frantically calling their wives, but no-one's picking as phones are in the van. Sean takes Allyson's car from in front of the restaurant to go to the hospital, with the hope that he will return soon, before Allyson notices.
However, things go from bad to worse when Allyson's sister-in-law, Bridget (who works at the same bowling alley), realizes that her infant son, Phoenix, is missing. Bridget had left Phoenix with Joey. But Joey went on a date, and left Phoenix with Bones (Trace Adkins), who runs a tattoo parlor. Allyson agrees to help, but finds her car missing, and reports it stolen.
The four women travel across the city looking for Phoenix. They meet Bones, who says that Caprice (Joey's ex-girlfriend) has the kid as Bones had to smoke & he knew smoking is not good for a baby. The 4 travels to Caprice's where his stoned boyfriend Hank doesn't know where Caprice is but tells Bones that she went drinking. They all go looking for Caprice (while Caprice had left Phoenix with her nice neighbors across the street from her house).
Meanwhile Marco & Kevin are driving the kids back to Sean's home when Allyson notices her Van & asks the cab to follow it. A police car takes note & stops the van & finds a bunch of kids saying that they are not with their parents & being taken to somewhere they don't want to go. The police arrest Kevin & Marco. Allyson's cab has crashed in a dumpster and hence are not anywhere near to testify.
Kevin, Marco & the kids are taken into custody. The 4 girls reach there & everyone starts blaming Allyson for the night's disaster. Sondra, Izzy & Bridget are tasered for being hysterical & are locked up. Allyson calls Sean and asks him to come to the police station.
Caprice finally calls Bridget & while the voice is breaking up, so Allyson & Bridget decide to head over to Caprice's. They look around & finally figure that a neighbor was holding Phoenix all the time.
Everyone is reunited and absolved of charges. Allyson writes a blog post stating that her life may be stressful and crazy, but it is also beautiful.
