Sex & Nudity

  • Season two contains frequent sexual innuendos.

Violence & Gore

  • Very strong graphic bloody violence throughout
  • Lots of fight scenes with people being killed, gory wounds etc
  • A woman is a nurse and is covered in blood while trying to help a patient, whose leg has been damaged badly. Blood spurts from his artery.
  • A man is fatally injured by a boar, we see the bloody wound and his intestines are exposed. Men are shooting at each other and there is a little blood here.
  • A man has a dislocated shoulder, which is pulled back into place.
  • A man is seen covered in blood.
  • A man is seen with a gunshot wound which is then taken care of by a nurse.
  • Several men are attacked by a boar. They have graphic wounds in their legs. One man's intestines are exposed.
  • A little boy has a nail hammered through his ear as a form of punishment. He screams in pain, and blood pours out of his wound.
  • A woman becomes hysterical and slaps another woman across the face (it turns out to be a daydream)
  • A man is brought in with a severely wounded arm. Blood can be seen gushing from the wound. The arm is amputated with a saw while the victim is still conscious. Intense screaming can be heard and blood flow is evident throughout the scene.
  • A man punches a woman in the stomach. She falls to the ground, struggling to breathe. He orders one of his soldiers to repeatedly kick her in the stomach.
  • Jamie is brutally flogged. His skin is mangled and bleeding. There is blood around his feet from his wounds. At one point, it appears as if he passes out from the pain. The man flogging him has blood on his face and shirt. This scene goes on for several minutes.
  • The rape scene mentioned above in the sex section, the woman bashes the man in the head before the man throws her on the bed to rape her. While the man fondles himself but unable to become erect, the woman laughs repetitively at the man while he hits her repetitively each time.
  • We watch as a character stitches up several chunks of flesh and cuts on a man's hand, this is quick but bloody.
  • A man has part of his skin cut out, nothing graphic, but we see the chunk of flesh with blood.

Profanity

  • One character frequently says Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ.
  • Season two has infrequent swearing throughout, not quite as strong as season one, but does contain sexual innuendos.
  • Season three has infrequent swearing, including two uses of 'cunt' (one as an insult and one as a sexual generalization).
  • A few uses of 'fucking' in episode 9, one use of 'cunt' in episode 12 and episode 15, a few uses of bloody and hell. One of goddamn, two of bastard, etc, talks and jokes about sex from many people (from men and women as curses and references).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There is smoking, including a young girl smoking.
  • Various people drink; unruly actions of drunk people.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Seriously wounded characters are often led die, since the medicines at the time were inadequate. This can be very sad and prolongued and also morally hazardous.
  • If this show was a film, it would be rated R for strong graphic bloody violence, language, and strong sexuality/nudity.
  • Pagan rituals, witchcraft, spells and charms etc
  • A group of travelers comes across bodies of 2 men physically abused and crucified hung on crosses.
  • Claire finds a dead baby in a tree (a deformed baby 'given to the fairies') and she holds it for a few moments.
  • Various scenes in which severely wounded men are being treated, which display a high level of anxiety and urge combined with screaming or moaning and images of blood gushing.

Sex & Nudity

  • A man is revealed to have a pregnant mistress.
  • A priest, in an attempt to marry a young couple, mistakes another man as the groom, has confusion as the groom has a false hand, then asks if the groom "has a cock, as it is tradition."
  • Season 2 shows the rape of a young girl. No nudity is shown.
  • In season 3, a naked woman emerges from bathing in blood. She then rinses and spends most of the scene in various states of undress.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is decapitated with an axe. This takes several blows and is witnessed by a man and two women.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scenes where Jamie is repeatedly raped and tortured are extremely graphic and disturbing.
