Independent Film Perfection

This movie is a trip. It's a brilliant look into a world I don't know much about which is always great in a filmic experience. Incredible performances across the board, exciting stories and characters in this really intelligent piece of cinema.

Blown away by what was accomplished by these filmmakers for very little money. I got to see this film at The Calgary International Film Festival and it was clear by the Q&A that this was a labour of love and a deeply personal film for so many folks involved.

From an Alberta perspective, I think this is the strongest film to come out of the filmmaking community in a long, long time.

A love letter to the medium of dance

Drop was full of surprises! While the film was about a kid in trouble with a gang, it watched like a love letter to the medium of dance - in all its contemporary forms! My favourite parts of the movie were the interludes of hip-hop and breakdancing and jazz dance and physical movement... some of the scenes left me feeling breathless, as much from watching people do something physically demanding as the suspense of the story itself.

The two main actors were really great to watch on screen. Christopher Clare had some exceptional moments, especially closer to the end of the film (no spoilers here!)

While the narrative circled issues related to police and gang violence, it never quite tipped over into the tropes we've learned to expect. There were moments of surprise and redemption for each character.

For those living in Calgary, it was really neat to watch familiar landmarks fly by on screen! The filmmaker did so much with a very tight budget, and it was amazing to see DJD, Workshop Studios, the CP rail lines, and the landscapes of Calgary playing into this narrative.

So curious to see what the filmmaker does next!!

Loved this film

This was my first Calgary International Film Fest experience and I was blown away with Drop. I absolutely loved and enjoyed the film. Something that really stuck out and resonated with me was the integration of dance in the film; I found it to be so interesting and unique. I also found the dancing to be a beautiful counterpart and compliment to the intense storyline. The dancing offered a mental break to the viewer and the flip flop of emotions was a fun ride to be on. This film really drew me in emotionally and I was able to deeply connect with so many of the characters. I would highly recommend this watch!
