Everything you want from a romantic costume periode comedy
Etherlady7 February 2024
I love Korean historical romantic comedies, and this one just has it all. Lee Hanee's comedic timing is excellent, the costumes and set are beautiful while the story itself centers around a mysterious event some 15 years ago, when the former king died, Lee Hanee's character was widowed and someone orchestrated clandestine events. Since then Lee Hanee's character has lived as a widow at day, but thanks to her martial training she rights wrongs during the night. I also thoroughly enjoy how the female lead is an adult woman while the chemistry with the male lead is very enjoyable. I'm eight episodes in and can't wait for the next one.

I HOPE THE PRODUCERS WILL OPT FOR A SECOND SEASON!
joyy-7360918 February 2024
I thoroughly enjoyed the drama Knight Flower. The main actress acted so well and was so funny! I am wishing right now for a second season where the main actors will get together for real! The chemistry between them was just too much. Park So Hoo's love and care for Lady Cho was so obvious. I enjoyed the way So Hoo looked at the female lead all throughout the drama. His eyes were solely on her and full of passion, determination and obsession. At times, I would laugh at how jealous he would become of the men interested in her. At other times, I would be impressed with how far he's ready to go to protect the woman he cherishes. He's even ready to kill her enemies on her behalf and to follow her wherever she wants to go. What a man! What a love! I am indeed a hopeless romantic! I really hope the producers of this drama think about a second season. I never regretted a 12 episodes' drama this much!

Have you already forgotten who I am

Lee Hanee plays Jo Yeo-hwa who is a dutiful widow living in seclusion at her in-laws house but unbeknown to everybody at nights she goes out as a vigilante righting the wrongs of corrupt officials. A new captain of the palace guard arrives called Park Soo-ho played by Lee Jong-won who is a stickler for rules and soon sets out to capture this vigilante. It is based on a webtoon and like most webtoon adaptations it can be a little stilted at times but it is still an enjoyable period piece. The acting is very good from the entire cast and the leads certainly seem to have chemistry and the plot has good supporting characters.

I found a rough diamond

'Night Blooming Flower' has everything we can ask for. Comedy, Romance, Action, History, Crime, and Mystery. More importantly, it is good at every one of them.

There are three branches of main narratives: a vigilante helping the people in need, Lady Jo's brothers missing, mystery around the death of the late king, and romance between Lady Jo and Park Soo-ho. Each one is complicated enough, but writers manage to keep them in order and in organization AND to connect events from all four categories and weave them together to tell one whole story.

Each character is distinctive, charming, and dynamic. Every individual has not only strength but also weakness. I think weakness is the reason that the audience feels closer to him or her. For example, mother-in-law is blinded by social expectations and high standards of a noble family, and she sometimes pressures Lady Jo to have one meal a day or to pray all day and night. However, she also has taken care of Lady Jo for 15 years and becomes the closest thing to family she's ever got. Even the main villain has two sides: the killer of the king just to prevent social equality from happening and the sweetest husband.

'Night Blooming Flower' introduced a young promising actor, Lee Jong-won who played Park Soo-ho. It is the first time for me to see him on any screen, and he nails it. First, he can deliver unlike many young actors these days. His voice is deep and stable. It was such a pleasure to see his performance.

Warning: Spoilers
What an awesome, fast paced and thoroughly entertaining story! I am seriously in awe of the FL, her comic timing was perfect, and so was her emotional acting, not beyond mentioning is her super sweet dimple! The ML was great too, and even though there wasn't a single kiss in the entire series, the gaze of the ML conveyed far more affection. In all, this series had it all - intrigue, romance, action, drama, and most importantly, a happy ending. It was just twelve episodes, but I feel I needed more of the lead couple somehow, the second leads were super cute too, it would have been great to have some more romance for those two as well.

Good Enough
PennyReviews4 March 2024
Korean Drama '' Knight Flower '' is a historical comedy with some political intrigue woven into it.

The drama has a strong female lead who captivates each scene and truly shines, especially when it comes to the comedy part. She was energetic, and funny, nailed her fighting scenes, and also handled her emotional scenes masterfully.

In addition, the drama had some nice twists that it handled nicely. The mystery was, moreover, intriguing and interesting.

On the other hand, the romance was weak, could have been omitted, but it had some sweet times between the two leads.

The performances, finally, were great by every actor and actress in the cast.

So, overall, seven out of ten.

Loved the strong female character

Warning: Spoilers
10/10 is my rating. This is a 2024 South Korean period costume comedy romance drama with 12, 64-72 minute episodes. Based on a webtoon.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

Cho Yeo Hwa (Lee ha nee) was widowed after never even seeing her husband on her wedding day. As the daughter-in-law of of the most prestigious noble family, her mother-in-law forces her to follow the most strict rules that applied to widows of the era she must spend many hours at the shrine honoring her husband and cover herself modestly in public. She cannot wear anything but the drab mourning attire and must always conduct herself in such a way to be beyond reproach. That is the day time version of Yeo Hwa, At night she dons ninja like attire and rights injustices. After 15 years of keeping her night persona a secret, she runs across Park Soo ho (Lee Jong won) a by the book military officer who does not appreciate Yeo Hwa's vigilante ways. At first he is determined to bring that masked menace to justice until he discovers the man is actually a woman and a very attractive and intriguing one at that. The more Soo ho learns about the mysterious martial artist and that her actions are actually noble, the more he finds himself helping her. They also share commonalities around events in the tragedies of the past. Intrigue turns to like then possibly something more.

Review

This is one of the best historical dramas I have seen because the focus isn't on the politics, even though the politics are a part of the plot there's so many other interesting things going on that it isn't central. If you like action dramas with strong central characters and leads that are very interesting in their back stories, this would be a good one for you. The romance element is there but it's certainly not highlighted and that could be a plus or a minus depending on how strong you want the romantic element to be. The series ends well and happy with all major plot points resolved.

I highly recommend this series and will likely watch it again.

Spoilers

The only critique I have of this, as somebody who likes romance, is they never fully kiss. That disappointed the romantic in me. I like displays of affection, to see chemistry, or lack there of. In the end they're together, but it's not like any level of commitment is made. She just reappears and it's pretty obvious they're going to be together from that point forward, but you only get to see just a few seconds of that reunion. After waiting through all of the episodes for them to be together, only getting a few seconds at the end of the final episode, just wasn't enough to satisfy my desire for strong romance. Honestly, the show was so good though I couldn't decrease how I rated it based on that small aspect. It was just something that would've made it even better if they had given a little more time for the satisfying union of the two main characters.

I felt so sorry for the widows in this and I was curious how real the severity of the social restrictions were. I'm sure some of it was accurate but I'm not sure how overblown the sacrifices they had to make in this series were. I have the sense that it could be individuals' families deciding how the widow could behave. I was glad Yeo Hwa helped the other widow escape with the man she loved. I also liked that she broke free if that miserable existence.

Personally, I really like characters that are strong physically and I enjoy complex martial art scenes were the good guy defeat the bad guys believably and repeatedly. Yeo Hwa was super hero status in her martial arts ability and it was fun to watch.

#KnightFlower #LeeHanee #LeeJongWon.

Not that great.

Warning: Spoilers
I find this show to be mediocre. Again, we have a small female beating up bigger stronger men all the time....silly. The age discrepancy in appearance between the leads is too much. The ML looks likes FL younger brother or even son. It is admirable for the series to show the ways woman and especially widows were abused. I am finding the second male lead to be more interesting. I think his romance with the little maid will be more interesting as well. The King is almost playing his role as in a comedy. The MLs superior is supposed to be comic relief but his overacting is annoying. I am impressed with the villains. They are frightening with their facades of righteous goodness. Though I don't blame the one woman for offing her husband.

Lee Hanee hopelessly miscast
merricks-merricks5 March 2024
The ancillary characters were good but Lee Hanee looked every day of her 41 years (just her face). This viewer found it hard to believe the love story. Every time she appeared onscreen, this viewer was reminded of her age. She was neither appropriate as the love interest nor as the supposedly athletic and brilliant martial artist. It would be good if Korean casting directors ceased to believe that 40 year-old women can play the role of a "first love".

The male lead (Lee Jong-wong) was handsome and. Kim Mi-kyung (the mother-in-law) was as always a pleasure to watch, but plastic smiles and plastic surgery just don't do it for me.
