Premiering tonight at the semi-virtual Sundance Film Festival, Summer Of Soul is both an exhilarating and chastising experience.
Unearthing a cultural sarcophagus of 1969 Black America, the dexterous directorial debut about 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is full of triumphal performances from some of the greatest musicians of that era and any other.
This is living hidden history that you need to hear and know, as Gladys Knight says in the documentary: “It wasn’t just about the music.”
Completed during the Covid-19 crisis, the nearly two-hour Summer of Soul moves through time and memory with sit-down interviews with people who were in the 300,000 strong crowd or up on-stage. Yet, like a previous Sundance opening night documentary, 2015’s What Happened Miss Simone? (which actually contains about 30-seconds of the 1969 footage), the brutal reality of how much of the oppression and...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Third Day” finale, Episode 6, “Last Day – The Dark,” including the ending.]
Unlike so many modern TV mysteries, “The Third Day” finale cuts right to the heart of the matter — and no, I’m not just talking about poor Mr. Martin.
Directed by “Winter” helmer Philippa Lowthorpe and written by Kit de Waal, Dean O’Loughlin, and creator Dennis Kelly, the 61-minute final chapter starts by delivering what fans have wanted all along: Sam (Jude Law) and Helen (Naomie Harris) in the same room, at the same time, answering our long-lingering questions. No, the child Sam thinks is their son Nathan cannot, in fact, be Nathan; he’s too young, his eyes are the wrong color, and, as Helen screams, “he’s not even the right color!” Yes, Sam is in the middle of another “episode,” where his grief deludes him into believing wild theories.
Realizing that Sam is delusional is...

Getting trapped on a secluded island paradise may not have sounded so bad a few weeks ago, but in a post epidemic-world, that mysterious premise may tap into some very relevant anxieties. At least, that’s as much as can be gleaned from the intriguing first trailer for “The Third Day,” a new HBO limited series starring Jude Law and Naomie Harris. The trailer features eerily upbeat music, some stunning aerial shots of a winding road submerged in water, and plenty of smoldering Law looks.
Here’s the official synopsis, according to HBO: “The show is divided into two parts: ‘Summer’ and ‘Winter.’ In ‘Summer,’ one man (Jude Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, aka ‘Winter,’ a strong-willed outsider (Naomie Harris) comes to the island seeking answers — but instead...

Hulu has tapped “Veep” alum Tony Hale to star in its adaptation of “The Mysterious Benedict Society.”
Based on the novel by Trenton Lee Stewart, the series follows four gifted orphans who are recruited by an eccentric, benefactor to go on a secret mission. Placed undercover at a boarding school known as “The Institute,” they must foil a nefarious plot with global ramifications, while creating a new sort of family along the way.
Hale will pull double-duty on the series, starring as both Mr. Benedict, the “rumpled, affable eccentric genius” and head of the titular society, and his “frustratingly sharp, well put-together (if villainous)” twin brother, Mr. Curtain.

Outfest 2015, presented by HBO, goes down July 9-19 in Los Angeles and as always, the lineup this year is looking strong. Also a Sundance premiere, Sebastián Silva's tart Brooklyn-set comedy "Nasty Baby," winner of Berlin's Teddy Award this year, is Outfest's Us Dramatic Centerpiece.
