"Can I not have a male friend without something romantic being read into it?"
skteosk11 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The show seems to be trying to turn Sasha and Spencer into the new April and Dexter.Since we've still got the old one, it kind of feels like we're getting the sugar overdose in stereo.Dexter might talk about the music swelling when they're together in one of his irritating monologues but that's no reason to actually do it in a desperate attempt to force the audience to like the couple:It actually works against Demi Harman's performance as she tries to bring out the awkwardness of the moment. The fact that Rosie has been sidelined in order to give a not-particularly-special couple time alone together is a symptom of a show with a very wrong sense of priorities.

Meanwhile, John proves to be the world's worst patient with his constant demands:The way he gets the entire hospital staff running to deal with a non-existent emergency and Dexter having to give him a sponge bath are comic highlights. But there's a serious undercurrent, although sadly it comes down to Jett shouting a lot.Can we not find something new for him to do?

Dexter's storyline does actually have a vaguely satisfying denouement, although it still feels like a case of "tell, not show".
