My alienation from current pop is almost complete; the only 2013 Top 40 material I enjoyed enough to play repeatedly was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, from an album released in 2012. So I am officially a cranky old fart. But there are more and more of us, and maybe fellow COFs will find this list useful. By the way, crossing that border of alienation made me think more than ever that saying my lists are of the "best" albums is nearly absurd, hence the new headline.
1. Wire: Change Becomes Us (Pink Flag)
This is my favorite Wire of this century thanks to more emphasis on Colin Newman's brooding. When allied to their chugging motorik beats, it's irresistible to me. There are still some uptempo burners that recall their beginnings in punk, and some more whimsical though still musically solid songs, but it's Newman's dark musings that made me play this repeatedly.

In the realm of dark musical delights, 2013 has been quite a historic year: legends in their respective genres returned and/or reunited, while others marked the swan songs of their careers; iconic artists turned out some of their finest work, while some innovative up-and-comers set loose fresh and evil earworms on our collective brains. Honestly, it was damn near impossible for me to narrow the list down to just thirteen entries – a mere Top 10 was out of the question – and cutting names felt like chopping off my own extremities (which I'll admit would be an impressive journalistic statement, but could lead to unpleasant side effects I'd rather not deal with). Still, I found a way to make it work. Well... okay, I cheated, actually. More on that later. But for now, let's cycle back through 2013 – definitely a banner year for scary sounds! Continuing our coverage of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, we have exclusive photos from Black Sabbath: 13 3D, one of this year’s new attractions. Kristian and Fernanda Hanson were invited by Universal to check out the event for Daily Dead and here’s what Kristian had to say:
“Black Sabbath is one of the most prolific metal bands in history and now they have their own maze at Halloween Horror Nights. The maze from the beginning is a lot of fun with the addition of the 3D paint and the glasses that are given to the guests. Each room has different songs playing from the prolific band, and the one room that had the biggest impact was the War Pigs room where a nuclear attack is taking place. Definitely a fun maze and one that will leave the Sabbath fans happy in regards to the visuals and...
