I have to admit, there are a few times I do think I have pegged this show down in terms of what direction it will take, or how an arc will play it and it throws me off a bit. Not exponentially in such a way that we get a serious game changer, but it does remind you that these characters are supposed to really represent people and not just a bunch of odd quirks, melodrama and the occasional shakeup to keep you from changing the channel.
In "The Good Samaritan" we find ourselves understanding that while Bay and Daphne are settling into their blood families, they can't just break ties with the people who raised them, or were around them growing up. Take Daphne for example, Regina being away for so long is starting to take its toll and with Bay having access to Regina and Daphne getting only whatever moments they can find to spare, you can see that despite the Kennish's being her birth family, Regina has roots in her heart which can't just be snatched out. And the same is true, in a way, for Bay as well. Though it seems she is fine leaving Kathryn and John behind, she has this connection with Toby which she still craves.
The beauty of this episode comes in the value and need to connect with people, especially loved ones. This is why despite how much Kathryn may complain about how her mom is, she finds herself still taking and making calls to her and still remaining ambivalent to how much she is like her. Then, looking at Angelo, you can see as one child slips between his fingers his desperation to try to hold onto the family he has within his grasp. But, being that he has been absent so long, and a sort of part- time dad, taking things on full-time seems daunting and breaks this fantasy he made.
But, I have to say one of the best parts was watching how Nicki and Toby were. Though I'm not fond of how much Nicki brings up her religion, still it is nice to see a character who really does speak on their religious values, and not in passing, but speaking on how profound and valuable their faith is to them. The conflict this brings with Toby and her, as well as some issues it may bring with Daphne working with her are quite invaluable in terms of the possible dialog this may bring. Not only that, I like seeing Nicki and Toby together since it seems like the realest relationship I've seen on a show like this. There isn't anything over the top like someone cheating, having a baby or whatever, it is just two people trying to sort out their personal priorities while trying to put what their partner wants high up on their list. With everyone else on the show it seems like they over do their relationship issues, but with Toby and Nicki, it doesn't seem like they are trying to make their scene be over the top, but intimate and personal. It almost feels intrusive while we see them fight, or even simmer in disappointment in one another.
Overall, with everything mentioned and James, creepy coffee guy, becoming a bit more fleshed out, this was a really good episode. Thing is, I do feel that teasing us with a Bemmet reunion is a bit messed up and though I must admit I like the two together, I really do wish they would stop teasing and either bring them together or let them find someone new. Especially Emmet, while being love sick is cute now, I feel it will get tired eventually.
