From start to finish a taut and tense adrenaline ride like its Hong Kong original, this remake of 'Eye in the Sky' is one of the best Korean thrillers we have seen
moviexclusive2 September 2013
"Eye in the Sky" was one of the most under-appreciated movies of 2007, a taut and tense Hong Kong thriller from auteur Johnnie To's Milkyway Image banner which boasted compelling performances from Milkyway regulars Simon Yam and Tony Leung under the auspicious directorial debut of To's frequent assistant Law Wing Cheong.

Fortunately for fans of the original, "Cold Eyes" isn't one of those remakes that ends up sullying the reputation of its predecessor; instead, directors Cho Ui-seok and Kim Byung-seo have succeeded in creating an equally gripping movie that is both reverential to its source material and imaginative enough to stand on its own. Indeed, the beauty of their film lies in how it manages to balance elements from the original with its own ideas, trading one metropolis for another without losing the idiosyncrasies of Seoul's urban landscape or for that matter of Milkyway's high-brow concept.

Like "Eye", Cho begins with the team's latest addition, Yoon-ju (Han Hyo-joo), being assigned to track a middle-aged man whose identity she is oblivious to. In actual fact, the man is none other than her soon-to- be leader Hwang (Seol Kyung-gu), the "mission" an on-the-job interview for the Chief to assess her abilities. While trading Hong Kong's signature tram cars for Seoul's underground subway, the details remain the same - Hwang drops a newspaper along the way, bumps into another lady, enters a phone booth, scribbles on a piece of paper torn from the phone book, and finally sits down in a café where he confronts her - every single one just as important for Yoon-ju's assignment.

As Hwang is testing Yoon-ju, a band of criminals led by James (Jung Woo- sung) execute a high-precision heist at a bank in downtown Seoul, eventually making off with millions after evading the police in no small measure due to a diversion created by one of their members. He's the equivalent of the original's Lam Suet, a crucial mark the team will eventually focus on to get their first break into a seemingly flawless plan. James is however here a criminal-for-hire rather than his own mastermind, a new addition from the original being a mysterious broker (Kim Byeong-OK) whom the former gets his orders from.

Staying true to the nature of such operations, Cho keeps their target elusive in the first hour of the film; instead, he takes the opportunity of that waiting game to emphasise the character beats that will pay off later in several surprisingly affecting scenes, in particular, that between Chief Hwang and Yoon-ju. Kyung-gu plays the strict but warm- hearted Hwang visibly tougher than Simon Yam was in the original, but otherwise the dynamic between mentor and rookie is pretty much similar - and in the days spent waiting for their mark, Hwang will come to recognise and admire Yoon-ju's intelligence and tenacity, while the latter will take to the former like a daughter to a father. That bond was the heart and soul of "Eye", and Cho's retelling loses none of the original's poignancy, especially given Seol and Han's heartfelt chemistry in their scenes together.

Yet even in the midst of these character-driven moments, Cho keeps a tight grip on the film's pace set in motion from the very first riveting frame. Like a procedural, every fascinating detail of the team's stakeout from their covers to their routine is carefully depicted - even their disposition on the field, as exemplified by Yoon-ju's break from protocol by intervening to assist a woman being bullied by a group of thugs. And as a perfect counterbalance, we are also acquainted with James, whose potent combination of methodical and meticulous injects frissons of menace into the proceedings.

From tense to intense pretty much describes the second half of the movie, which kicks into high gear when the team follows their target to discover the rest of his crew - sans James, who manages to keep his cover a little longer by always keeping a safe distance, though never letting his watchful eye slip, from his associates. Once again, Cho stays true to the spirit of the original - choreographing edge-of-your- seat moments as Hwang and Yoon-ju trail James through a myriad of small alleys - while expanding the scope of the action thanks to a much larger budget, including a car chase that unfolds amidst Seoul's busy streets and culminates in a standoff in the middle of a flyover.

Perhaps most significantly, Cho retains the karmic twist at the end of "Eye" despite dropping such a reference in the English title this remake adopts - and for those who have not seen that earlier movie, let's just say it has something to do with Buddhist teachings. Cho's respect for his inspiration is clear at every turn - even in the alias 'Piglet' Yoon-ju assumes in the field - which is probably the reason why he manages to snag Simon Yam to appear in a brief cameo right at the end.

Whether as a remake or as a film on its own, this is without a doubt a first-rate exceptional thriller that makes the most of its distinctive premise to deliver an edge-of-your-seat adrenaline-pumping ride. No wonder then that the movie has gone on to become one of the biggest hits this year in its home territory - and with original lead star Yam clearly on board, we can say that obvious sequel has become one of those we really cannot wait to see.

This is how action movies should be like
Jqn_Hgar1 October 2014
i have never heard about this movie before but today i was surfing the net looking for a good action movie and because i love Korean movies i stumbled upon this great piece of entertainment.

the movie starts with a very spectacular heist executed precisely by an armed gang with the supervision of a man that seems like he doesn't wanna get his hands dirty (i was wrong about him) instead he instructs his gang members from an elevated position he is basically the architect of the heist.

on the other side a group of high tech police squad that chooses it's recruits carefully as they have to be very brilliant in many aspects in this demanding field and the chase begins in this action packed edge of seat thriller.

this movie is simply a chase that lasts like 3 days if i'm not wrong involving followings stakeouts and bugging houses in order to identify the members of the bank robbers as they plan another even more daring heist. the directors kept the same pace through the whole movie in order to give the audience a feel that time is running out or rather a feel of doing something risky and trying to get away with it. they also focused on the Villain of this movie who in my opinion stole the show with his intelligence and fighting skills as he manages to stay one step ahead of the police the entire time.

and how can i disregard the brilliant camera-work and the editing that despite the nature of most of the action happening in this movie still manages to capture every single thing.

overall this is a great cops and robbers movie with some good thrills and fight scenes. my rating 7.5/10

A Taut and Tense thriller- Perfectly Crafted and Well Acted.
ajit210623 September 2013
"Cold Eyes" is a new thriller and we can pronounce South Korean mastery in thriller genre.

An elite Korean police surveillance unit, led by Hwang Sang-jun/Falcon (Seol Kyung-gu), is after an ace gang of robbers led by James (Jung Woo-sung). At the same time, rookie Ha Yoon-ju/Piglet (Han Hyo-joo) joins the surveillance unit and needs to learn how to fit in.

"Cold Eyes" is a taut, proficient and tense thriller. It delivers every minute detail of the surveillance team, and we are in sync with main characters and their competencies. Everything we need to know about them for the story is mostly presented through how they do their jobs, and most of them are smart and resourceful enough to be the competent players of their crafts. In their intense battle of wits, a trivial thing noticed in one situation can be a crucial chance for reversal in the other circumstance later, and, like many good thrillers, that makes us constantly anxious about what will happen next.

The movie draws our attention from the beginning with its terrific opening sequence introducing its main characters as also subtly signaling to us that something is going on under the surface. We initially see a young woman in the subway that seems to be on some clandestine mission, and we also notice an ordinary-looking middle-aged man in the same subway car. Both are very watchful about their surroundings, but they are also very, very careful about being not noticed by others – and each other, perhaps.

"Cold Eyes" is the remake of Hong Kong thriller "Eye in the Sky (2007)" produced by Johnnie To, and he also has a cameo. "Cold Eyes" is a perfect remake with genuine South Korean style and substance.

Go watch it

This tells the operations of a team of surveillance officers tracking some most wanted criminals in South Korea.

Piggy is a new recruit into the surveillance team, and her initial test to see if she has photographic memory is already very impressive. When she is on the field and put to test, she and her team continues to excel in all ways possible. The technology they used, their analytical power and their brilliant skills dazzle viewers. The numerous close shaves keep viewers on edge, and there were many occasions I could feel myself holding my breath, waiting for critical events to unfold.

I have watched a few Korean films lately, and I have been thoroughly impressed by all of them. "Cold Eyes" continues the streak of great Korean films to be exported abroad, as it is a thriller that cuts right to the chase and keeps you on edge throughout the film. If you have the chance, go watch "Cold Eyes".

Fast Paced Crime Drama
billcr1230 November 2013
Cold Eyes is a fast paced crime drama which begins with a pretty young girl on a subway who seems to be a regular passenger with other riders. Hyo-ju Ha is the actress, and she is the star here, a natural beauty who you cannot take your eyes off of. She turns out to be an undercover cop tracking bad guys. Later on, she is teamed with other police, all men, by the way, who join together to catch a ruthless group of criminals who have robbed a bank. Most of the film is set in a large room filled with monitors showing various parts of a Korean city. It moves along quickly, with a solid cast and decent storyline. The ending is nothing new, but overall it is better than average.

WOW! This is the way every crime thriller should be made!
alshwenbear17 September 2013
I came to this without real expectations… first five minutes I was lost and uninterested, ten minutes warming up. Suddenly, I felt like being part of the film, of the team, (the good guys), following the robbers and "Shadow" from the edge of my seat, and all this without CGI involved! Catching the bad guys hasn't been so much entertainment for me in a little while… and the characters do not scream their lungs out, or run through the streets knocking everyone else down, on the contrary they act as discreet as a surveillance team should in real life.

"Cold Eyes" is a movie that delivers, and the action is not over the top, so it may be unsatisfying for Hollywood standards, but what it lacks in explosions and heart pounding chases, fulfill with characters and situations that we care,so, if you like good thriller with some action just sit and enjoy this Korean Movie!

Impressive action thriller.
paulclaassen17 June 2018
Impressive opening scene. Excellent photography. Awesome visuals. Fascinating story. Action-packed and unpredictable. What more could you want in an action thriller? The film is about a group of police specialists who are the best in their field, and a mastermind criminal the best in his field, and them trying to outwit one another. He gets hired to steal specific items, and never deviate from the plan. Woo-sung Jung is excellent in the role of the ruthless robber.

A terrific thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish
rohmer-530 August 2013
I am lucky enough to attend a premiere of Cold Eyes. Without any expectation or prior knowledge of the movie ,I was drawn into the movie within 10 minutes. I do not want to spoil the movie for anyone but if you are into terrific Korean thrillers like Man from nowhere, The Chaser etc., Cold eyes is definitely for you. The characters are vivid, the action is exciting and heart pounding, the fight scenes are well choreographed and believable, the cat and mouse tracking between the detectives and the villains will keep you on the edge of your seat. The jokes are natural and laughable too, which are inserted at the correct points of the movie to create a tense and loosen effect, catching hold of the audience and letting go a while when necessary. Go and watch it, it is well worth your time. Hollywood productions, better buck up as Korea movies are coming strong.

Decent Hide & Seek Story
imgalib27 October 2017
Its a story about a surveillance team operation and a robber group lead by a mysterious. Decent story and moderate action sequences. The whole movie concentrate on hide & seek of two group of people and there is no one else. Movie is missing the background of the mysterious leader AKA shadow character. His motives and issues with handler is not clear. I found tailing the target scenes are bit immature, could have been much better. But overall story and cinematography is good.

Intelligent and tense thriller with 2 great actors
phd_travel4 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It helps to know the basic premise - she is a surveillance cop undercover. He is a killer and burglar with team. There is a cat and mouse game going on as the cops chase him and his team using memory and observation and cameras. There isn't an explosion a minute so it isn't non stop action. But when the violence happens it is more exciting and scary. Han Hyo Joo is sweet and intelligent looking here. Jung Woo Sung looks quite understated and menacing playing a bad guy for a change.

Forgettable and yet somewhat entertaining flick
KineticSeoul16 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This would have been a cool k-drama series, for maybe 12 or 16 episodes. I know this is suppose to be a remake of a Chinese movie, but it just seemed a bit undeveloped. It's about a surveillance team, that tracks down bad guys using the camera around the city. But they meet their biggest match when they encounter a leader that runs a crew of robbers. This flick has few quick cool moments in between, but nothing all that memorable. This is Jung Woo-sung's first role as the bad guy, and he basically plays the typical charismatic cool bad guy that is way too underdeveloped. As a matter of fact, you know almost nothing about any of the characters in this movie to even care what happens. Which is unfortunate since their seems to be some interesting character. A bit more information on their personality, background and motives would have made this movie better. It's worth a watch, but you won't be missing out on much if you miss out on this one.

The Koreans did it again. This is how a thriller should be. Well directed and suspenseful throughout. I swear, South-Korea is so much better than Hollywood when it comes to crime thrillers.

A grounded action-thriller with three addicting main characters
kluseba18 January 2014
"Cold Eyes" is a South Korean action-thriller inspired by the Hongkong movie "Eye In The Sky" which came out six years prior to this film.

The Korean remake has a rather odd beginning from my point of view. The film takes too much time to introduce many characters but only three are truly addicting or important to the story where a special police department is hunting down high profile criminals. The first thirty minutes where everybody gets to know each other in the department and where the team follows a stupid criminal nicknamed "Thirsty Hippo" are rather lengthy. Some rather faceless unit members on one side and exchangeable criminals on the other are the main reasons for a mellow start of this movie. Once the three main characters take the lead and once some unimportant side-stories are eliminated, the movie gets a lot more dynamical around forty minutes into the film.

The film is then carried by three characters. First off, there is the nervous rookie which is very well incarnated by actress Han Hyo-Ju. This character is very smart and has some impressive visual skills. On the other side, the young cop does a few fatal mistakes on her first mission. Han Hyo-Ju's acting feels natural and shows us a young woman torn between cold professionalism and emotional struggles who is growing throughout this story. This character is easily the most addicting one and carries the entire movie.

Chief Hwang is very well played Sol Kyung-Gu. At first sight, his character seems to be quite professional but also very arrogant, cold and severe at moments. Towards the end of the movie, his personal values come into play and show us a softer core where the aged expert is ready to sacrifice everything to save his men. He also becomes somehow a father figure for the rookie cop. This dynamical character and his actions add some diversity and a few philosophical thoughts to this film.

Last but not least, there is the cold-hearted, well organized and extremely smart veteran villain incarnated by Jung Woo-Sung. This character also has some quite different sides. He seems pitiless at first sight but he also cares about his men and refuses to blindly follow his superiors. It's a man that follows his convictions, his experience and his instinct. That's why he has some identical character qualities with the rookie cop on one side and her chief on the other. This explains why he is a quite respectable villain and not just a one- dimensional brutal bully.

The clash of these three characters is what makes the movie really outstanding. The film gets more and more tension-filled towards the end. The last twenty minutes or so are dedicated to an amazing chase through the city of Seoul where each of the three characters has to sacrifice something. These scenes will bring you on the edge of your seat.

The modern film techniques are effectively used without adding too many special effects to it. The film always remains as grounded and realistic as possible. The settings in this movie are well chosen but not exceptional either. While the story is nothing innovating, it's especially the great acting of the three main characters and the constantly growing pace leading to a dramatic turn of events that convince most. This is a welcome change to the effect-ridden Hollywood productions like "Mission Impossible" or "The Bourne" series.

If you watch this grounded and well-acted action-thriller, just be sure to be patient enough to make it through the first thirty or forty minutes that are not completely useless but rather ordinary in comparison to what follows afterwards. Genre fans and those who care for South Korean cinema should appreciate this film even though it can't mess with some of the contemporary cinematic milestones coming from this extraordinary country.

It is a game of spying and slipping away.
Reno-Rangan13 December 2013
You can call it a remake or inspired but this movie resembles Simon Yam's 'Eye in the sky' and a little bit of 'Infernal Affairs'. And that confirms when Simon himself appears as a cameo at the end. This Korean movie was very stylishly made especially the character appearances. An exciting pace with high tech electronic devices implements to spy the criminals gives a very modern look on detectives.

The movie begins with a twist at opening itself like some interview to hire somebody. Its a surveillance theme where a team of Korean intelligence works together to take down a group of bank robbers. Piglet is a given pet name to a newly recruited officer for the special crime unite. Her impressive observation talent puts her straight into a major spying case. Soon she gets her first field assignment to track the movements of one of the heist member. The thrilling story of 'Cold Eyes' tells how Piglet and her team led by Lee jointly acts to get the ruthless thieves.

This movie portrayed only between the two groups and nothing else like the rest of the world is blind. Between these two, the thieves and cops, it is demonstrated like a cat-mouse game. It was a good entertaining movie one can enjoy it thoroughly. If you have already seen 'Eye in the sky' or not, no matter this movie is still looking good on its own so you will have a good time. There were no hardcore stunts in the movie except a couple of quick sequences. After all it is a spying theme which fulfills its purpose in a stylish manner.

Korean cinema at its best...
A_Different_Drummer14 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Hello, I will be your reviewer for the rest of this paragraph. As your reviewer, I can tell you that this thriller is one of the best of its kind ever produced anywhere in the world, and you will not be bored. In fact, you will be superbly entertained. The bad news is that, as your reviewer, I cannot tell you precisely how they pulled this off. Let me be clearer -- these sorts of "team" cop shows have been around since the 1930s G-Man pictures. In the 60s we had Mission Impossible with a dozen knockoffs in the decades that followed. Robert Redford liked this specific format a lot and did one or two in this vein. Still -- this is the point -- you have never really seen a "task force" cop film until you have seen this one. Somehow this film offers a perfect balance -- enough idiosyncratic characters to form a connection; yet simultaneously enough technology and team action to make the experience more like a sports movie (any team sport) than a simple crime film. In the west, we glorify the individual. In the east, not so much. Perhaps that is the secret? But one thing for sure - great film.

Worth it
kameeleoned_out27 January 2022
Sure, most of the time it's fractured, clumsy, even jerky. But what it's got going for it is that it's relentless. It pushes forward at breakneck speed and that really compensates for everything else. It's what makes it exciting and a great watch. It looks good too, there's this modern feel to it like you're watching the near future, even though it's nine years old at the time of writing this. The actors (and the characters) are very likeable and charismatic, not one exception among them. A surprising movie all in all.

Solid surveillance crime thriller, tiptoeing on the above-average line
ScifiMethods28 November 2020
This film checks every possible requirement you could have of a film about a police surveillance team following a gang of thieves, but stops short of exceeding those requirements. At the core is a great new-rookie-on-the-team story and each main character is explored in just enough depth, but it doesn't take any risks with the overarching plot.

Something western films like this do is put a lot of effort into "humanising" the baddie character(s) so the audience can relate to their motivations to a certain extent - that doesn't happen here, there's no mistake our antagonist is violent, dangerous, and only looking out for himself (Jung Woo-sung is well cast in this role).

There are many better Korean crime thrillers, but this is still a good one, and somewhat unique amongst the sea of decent Korean crime-gang films. Some great performances and continual tense moments, well-paced throughout.
