Up the Women
Prismark1022 June 2018
Jessica Hynes stars and wrote this series about the rise of the women's suffrage movement but it lacks sharp writing and it is not really that funny.

Set in 1910, Hynes plays Margaret Unwin, an intelligent woman held back because of her sex. She knows more about electricity than Frank who is having difficulties trying to place an electric bulb.

Margaret is a member of the Banbury Intricate Craft Circle and she wants her group to be enthusiastic in the cause for votes for women. However set dead against her is Helen (Rebecca Front) who passionately believes that women are the weaker sex and too stupid to know what to do with the vote. She tries to steer the group to vote against Margaret's proposals.

There is an element of Blackadder here, as we are meant to laugh at the views held by the characters a century ago but the humour is not there in this opening episode.
