Unused to running a haulage firm and aware that he has alienated the drivers who worshipped his father, Big Tone, Martin is finding life difficult, especially as he is supporting Roz, his mother. After a team building exercise has ended in a drunken fight the truckers are too hung over for work and Malachi blames Martin. In his private life too he is harangued by pushy girlfriend - and aspiring model - Andrea, who accuses him of being weak. However Martin is shocked to learn how far Andrea will go to get her way, leading to his dumping her. He is also appalled to discover that his father had a mistress, by whom he has a daughter, as well as being a dishonest businessman, breaking safety rules to save money. He thus attempts to rectify matters, winning back the loyalty of his staff in the process.

Irresponsible, bed-hopping Steven is amazed to learn that his ex-wife Danielle lied about moving to Spain with their two sons and is living with them in Derby. Taking a day out he snatches them from school though ultimately Danielle agrees that he should have access to them. He takes them out in the truck with him, although it is against the rule, but not only must be make up for his time off he finds looking after them harder going than he imagined as they demand stops for the toilet and find his on-board collection of porn. To top it all his actions are exposed when the lorry is stolen with the boys on board though they are later safely found. Danielle now tries to stop him from seeing his sons and he gets punched by the husband of one of his girl-friends. As a result he determines to change and be more responsible.

Wendy accompanies Judy, her demanding hypochondriac mother, to another doctor's appointment where, as usual, there is nothing wrong with her After Judy has criticized her daughter's heavy drinking Wendy heads for the pub quiz and ends up having a one night stand with Steven, after which she quickly leaves. After attending an AA meeting Wendy confronts Judy and accuses her of being a cold, uncaring parent but Judy counters by accusing her daughter of being 'hard to love' and the cause of her marital break-up. At her thirty-fifth birthday party Wendy again hits the bottle and tries to seduce Glen, which leads to a fight breaking out. She seeks consolation from Steven, telling him that she has never had a lasting relationship in her life due to her insecurity but Steven is sympathetic, encouraging her to be independent of her mother and live her own life with some pride.

Glen is having nightmares, which Malachi attributes to guilt for cheating on long-term girlfriend Caroline with Wendy, so, in a rash attempt to assuage matters, Glen proposes but starts to regret it. At the engagement party Caroline finds out about Wendy and Glen and breaks off the engagement and, seeing his father with new lady-friend Pauline, Wendy and Steven and Michelle and Martin, the lad feels increasingly isolated and alone, eventually going missing. The truckers are alarmed when they see that he is driving to Lovers' Leap, a notorious suicide spot and follow after. However he had only gone there to think things over and sets out to live for himself.
