This is one of the best characters that I will ever play,” he says, explaining further that “the crew we have, from hair and makeup to our camera crew to obviously set design, costume design. Man, I was like, ‘I am working with excellence!’ I don’t think I’ve been on a on a film or TV project where I looked everywhere, and it was just excellent,...

On Tuesday morning, renowned fitness personality Richard Simmons opened up about his experience with skin cancer and detailed the emotional journey from diagnosis to treatment.
Simmons, who had previously alarmed fans with a post that said he was dying, revealed that he noticed a persistent blemish beneath his eye and decided to consult a dermatologist.
After a microscopic examination of the affected cells, the doctor informed Simmons that he had basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer associated with sun exposure.
Simmons, initially taken aback by the diagnosis, shared his lighthearted response to the doctor’s use of the “C word” to turn the point into a brief moment of laughter amidst the seriousness.
Basal cell carcinoma typically requires the removal of cancerous cells, and Simmons sought the expertise of Dr. Ralph A. Massey, a specialist in cancer treatment. Simmons said, “There was no numbing, it just had...

Cloud Nothings have announced a new studio album, Final Summer, and shared its latest single, “Running Through the Campus.”
Due on April 19th, Final Summer is Cloud Nothings’ first release on Pure Noise Records, and marks their ninth or 10th album “depending on how you look at it,” according to the band’s Dylan Baldi. Speaking to the record’s themes, Baldi said: “It’s about feeling alright in the moment. A lot of these songs sorta ended up being about getting by or trying to keep improving despite everything.”
To that end, he cites Cloud Nothings’ constant drive to make new music as a leading factor in Final Summer’s sound. “I just like making things,” Baldi said. “I love having something that I’ve made by the end of the day, even if it’s just one song. It’s like proof that my day happened. I’m...

It was a few minutes past midnight when Missy Elliott stepped up to the podium at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and cemented her place in history as the first female hip-hop artist to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She’d spent the past four hours witnessing speeches and performances from acts across the vast spectrum of rock, including Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, and Olivia Rodrigo. Near the end of her speech, tears started to flow as the gravity of the moment hit her seemingly all at once.

Hollywood history is full of interesting little mysteries. Like, how could the man responsible for directing the excellent "End of Watch" and writing the unimpeachable classic that is "Training Day" also be responsible for "Suicide Squad" and the embarrassment that was "Bright"? At least in the case of David Ayer's debut DC effort, we know studio meddling was largely to blame. But "Bright?" A hard boiled LA crime odyssey with orcs and fairies? Had anyone been asking for that combo?
Anyway, the point is that, if you only knew about these four movies, you might be under the impression Ayer has just two settings: he's either firing on all cylinders or misfiring entirely. But you'd be mistaken. Lurking between the zenith that was "Training Day" and the nadir that was "Bright," there's "Street Kings," a 2008 crime thriller which Ayer directed from a script by the master of LA noir fiction,...

Heavy spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" to follow.
"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was a miracle of filmmaking, a movie that shouldn't work -- it has too many characters, drastically different visual styles throughout, and a story that is simultaneously too kid-friendly for adults yet too adult for the demographic normally associated with American animation. Yet not only did work, but the film became a smash hit (joining our list of the best movies of all time). More importantly, it proved that animated movies could look like stylized concept art and still find an audience, a big one at that. Since then, we've seen many other movies experiment with their own unique visual styles and with stories that are bolder and more mature than, say, "Minions" or "The Boss Baby."

Sex and the City aired on HBO from 1998 until 2004. For six seasons, fans of the series connected deeply with Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York. They watched as they fell in love, had their hearts broken, and rebounded, always with the help of their very best friends. Now, fans can reconnect with three of the four in And Just Like That…, the Max reboot. While the reboot has its fair share of critics, it’s still nice to reconnect with fictional old friends. One Sex and the City fan theory, however, would completely ruin the original series and all that came after it if it turned out to be true.

A broader understanding and recognition of lived queer experiences, either through art or lived interaction, is something I’m finding increasingly valuable and incredibly grateful for. A lot of my dive has been focused on the Criterion Channel’s various LGBTQ+ playlists. Costume designer Jyoti Madnani Singh’s new film ‘Mumbaikar’ premiered on ‘JioCinema’ on 2nd of June. Mumbaikar boasts of heavy-duty star-cast that includes Vijay Sethupathi, Vikrant Massey, Sanjay Mishra, Sachin Khedekar, Tanya Maniktala and others. Jyoti Madnani Singh aka Jms, has dressed every single one of the characters in the sprawling cast. Jyoti’s costume does justice to the story setting that consists of characters from dark world of Mumbai and common Mumbaikar belonging to various strata of life.
Talking about how she landed up getting the assignment from a Kerala based production house, Jyoti said, “I have designed costumes for several realistic films in past like Rahasya, T for Tajmahal, Chaarfutiya Chhokare, etc, and had just finished shooting for thriller ‘420 Ipc’. Makers somehow got a whiff of my work. As Mumbaikar is also a thriller with tinge of drama-action in a realistic scenario, I reckon, I fitted the bill.

The best thing George Lucas ever did "Star Wars" was, well, create "Star Wars." The second best thing he ever did was to open his sandbox to the world, allowing others to play in the universe he created, reinterpreting and adding to it. Since then, the franchise has grown from a tale of rebellion and one farm boy becoming a hero to a true epic spanning millennia, with stories and characters as varied as they come.
This is why "Star Wars: Visions" is the purest expression of the sandbox-y nature of the "Star Wars" galaxy. The first season proved that the iconography and themes of the galaxy far, far away could translate well to different art styles and different stories than what we'd seen before — it could be about robots who want to be heroes as much as it could be a rock opera. The show fulfilled the promise of...

Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond are two very different shows. While both aired in the 1990s and early 2000s, they appeared on different networks and largely appealed to different audiences. Their subject matters were distinct, too. Frasier followed a radio psychologist as he navigated an upper-crust life in Seattle. Everybody Loves Raymond focused on Ray Barone and his extended family in New York. Still, the two shows have an unlikely connection. In fact, Frasier is partly responsible for getting Everybody Loves Raymond off the ground in a roundabout way.

How do you create a cinematic language for the unconscious? That was the challenge for director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Darius Khondji on “Bardo,” a movie that sprang from Iñárritu’s dreams, memories, and fantasies. “There is no story, there is no structure, there is no plot,” Iñárritu told IndieWire. “There’s just a mental landscape of a character.” Working with Khondji for the first time when his usual collaborator, Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki was booked on another project, Iñárritu discovered he had the ideal partner to translate his most personal experiences into images. “It was an incredible privilege to find another brother late in my life.”
Khondji and Iñárritu’s initial conversations were less about filmmaking than about the essence of what the filmmaking needed to convey. “Right from the beginning, he wanted me to understand how personal the story was,” Khondji said. “He talked to me about the...

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

There are quite a few ways someone could describe the way the NBC series "Community" approached its sitcom status. Call it deconstruction, call it subversion, call it homage, but whatever you do, do not call the series a "spoof."
The show, which ran for five seasons on NBC before hopping over to Yahoo for its final season, played with the sitcom format to create something a little more interesting. Whether an episode played around with tropes or Abed (Danny Pudi) simply pointed out how "real life" was just like a television show, there was always a meta aspect of "Community" that turned the humor into a commentary on, well, humor.
Series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon would end up taking the lessons he learned from his time at Greendale Community College to his next series, "Rick and Morty," but not before leaving an indelible mark on the prime-time sitcom. In...

Showtime has picked up a sixth season of The Chi, its popular drama series created and executive produced by Lena Waithe and executive produced by Common. The renewal comes while Season 5 is still airing, with new episodes dropping Fridays on streaming and on-demand and Sundays on the linear network, heading to the season finale, which will stream September 2 and premiere on-air two days later.
The Chi has been a digital standout from the start, with its series premiere setting a sign-up record for Showtime in December 2017. Five seasons in, the coming-of-age drama set in the South Side of Chicago remains a strong performer, with Season 5 on pace to set a new record for the series in streaming, growing that audience by over 20 from last season.

The mere opening salvo of “The Informer” contains nearly enough plot to keep many a lesser shoot-’em-up exercise occupied for an hour or two: Just 10 minutes into Andrea Di Stefano’s undercover-mission-turned-prison-break-thriller, a family has been set on the run, an FBI bust on a Polish drug cartel has gone tensely awry, a character’s identity has been neatly pulled out from under us, and a cop has been shot dead. Somehow, this impersonal but tightly wound Americanization of a Scandi-crime potboiler then continues escalating its short-of-breath narrative for almost two hours. For all “The Informer” lacks in surface style — shot and scored as it is in functional, straight-to-vod fashion — it remains a surprisingly well-oiled genre machine.
Opening Stateside in the January doldrums, several months after a modestly received late-summer bow in the U.K., this sophomore effort from Italian actor-turned-director Di Stefano is — like his Benicio del Toro...

Brooks & Dunn had a hit once called “Put a Girl In It,” and that’s just what the Academy of Country Music Awards have done, adding Kelly Clarkson, Brandi Carlile and Ashley McBryde to the lineup of performers for the April 7 telecast on CBS.
While they’re at it, they also added Brooks & Dunn, who have to count this as the lesser of their announcements in the last 48 hours, as they were just named as inductees to the Country Music Hall of Fame on Monday.
Other country heavy hitters being added to the ACMs’ performance slate are Luke Combs, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line and Dan + Shay. That last duo proved their awards-show mettle in February with a Grammys performance that turned out to be the most Shazam-ed of the evening.

Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss are three women you don't want to mess with in Warner Bros' The Kitchen.
Andrea Berloff's The Kitchen is one of our most highly anticipated films in 2019. Recent Egot winner John Legend has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind. During his performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park, Legend took the opportunity to call out the Senate in regards to this week’s events surrounding Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford.
Before performing his yet-to-be-released song “Preach”, Legend said, “In the song we talk about how frustrating it can be to look at your phone, read the news, see what’s happening.”
He continued, “See how senators treat women who come forward with sexual abuse claims. See how people ridicule young people who march for the right to go to school without getting shot up. See how people would denigrate those who make the very simple claim that black lives matter. We can get frustrated when we see all of that, but we can’t give up.

Unlikely as it might seem to long-time readers of this site, there might be some people who have only just started watching Doctor Who this year. After a year off air, Steven Moffat's brief going into this year's excellent tenth series seems to have been to give the show a soft reboot, picking up with Peter Capaldi's Doctor some time after the last series and ushering in the arrival of Pearl Mackie's new companion, Bill Potts.
To that end, the series started out with an enjoyable run of standalone episodes, boiling the show down to its essence of a madman in a box taking a young woman on adventures in time and space.

Books are restricted only to the ruling elite and pictograms have replaced written language in public. Den Of Geek went to Mexico to spy on the filming of Fear The Walking Dead season 3 - here's what we saw...
Standing in the middle of a remote Mexican valley in Tijuana, only accessible by an ‘upgraded’ dirt track that threatened to dislodge both the production vans' wheels and maybe a few spines, I suddenly felt utterly vindicated from any time during an interview when I’d asked about location enhancing an actors’ performance. With rolling hills, quite literally as far as the eye could see, it was impossible not to be overwhelmed by the majestic beauty of the dusty, yet strangely fertile landscape, and that was before even setting eyes on the incredible work that production designer Bernardo Trujillo and his crew had integrated into a new setting for Fear The Walking Dead simply called ‘The Ranch’.

A few words about prosopagnosia - better known as face-blindness...
Welcome to Geeks Vs Loneliness, our spot on the site where we chat about things that may be affecting you, or people you know. This week, we're handing over to Shawm Kreitzman, who wants to talk about something we're betting many of you - us included - hadn't heard of before...

A few years ago, I stumbled across the trailer for Anomalisa on YouTube.
I had never heard of the film, but I watched the trailer with mild interest and thought it looked like a curious (if slightly melancholy) piece of stop-motion animation, nicely executed, but ultimately unremarkable. I let my mouse wander on to something else, and didn’t give it another thought.
Until my girlfriend happened to see it,...

There’s nothing so strange as real life, something born out by the second episode of BBC serial killer drama Rillington Place…
This review contains spoilers.

Talk about delaying gratification. When viewers see the words ‘serial killer’ on their TV guide, they expect to see killings. A series of them. By holding John Christie’s version of events back until next week’s final episode, Rillington Place sets itself apart from its more gratuitously violent peers and announces that it’s telling a different kind of story. By so doing, it risks testing its audience’s patience.
Episode one’s careful portrait of Ethel Christie, a woman who gave in ineluctably to her quietly lethal husband, worked thanks to Tim Roth and Samantha Morton’s performances,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
It wasn’t a bad Thanksgiving weekend, especially for the Weekend Warrior who pretty much nailed two of his predictions for the weekend! Disney Animation’s Moana indeed at opened at #1 with $55.5 million for the three-day weekend (exactly my prediction), although it ended up with more--$81.1 million--in its first five days. The Brad Pitt-Marion Cotillard spy thriller, Allied (Paramount), directed by Robert Zemeckis, also opened with $18 million, right on track with my prediction. I guess I could take some comfort on being spot on with two of the Thanksgiving releases—like I said last week, that holiday weekend is a bear to predict—but I way overestimated the other two movies as sequelitis indeed hit Billy Bob Thornton...
