A new image from Dangerous Animals showcases Jai Courtney's terrifying character in the 2025 shark thriller. The upcoming Australian movie features the Suicide Squad star as Tucker, a serial killer who kidnaps young surfer Zephyr (Yellowstone's Hassie Harrison) with designs on feeding her to sharks. It was directed by Sean Byrne from a screenplay by Nick Lepard (Keeper) and also stars Josh Heuston and Ella Newton.

About two years ago, we heard that producers Mark Lane and James Harris of Tea Shop Productions, who freaked out movie-goers with the shark thrillers 47 Meters Down and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, as well as the survival thriller Fall, were teaming up with Gavin Mehrtens and Ashley Holberry of Cowboy Cosmonaut for a new “nature run amok thriller,” a killer alligator movie that was, at the time, called The Bayou. That project has since been retitled Gator Creek and it’s set to be released through the likes of Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube Movies, Sky Store, BT Store, and Microsoft Store on March 24th. So many of us love shark movies, but as fun as the subgenre can be, there is one problem they can't get past: they're all chasing the shadow of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, which is not only the best shark-centered movie ever made, but one of the most popular and best movies, no matter the genre. There have been a plethora of shark related films over the decades, but a lot don't even try to be like Jaws, and instead go the schlocky route. There are a few who sometimes get it right. Open Water was absolutely terrifying, and The Shallows was a great thrill ride. In 2017, 47 Meters Down, starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, was a fun surprise, with the scary premise of two divers stuck in a cage on the ocean floor while surrounded by great whites.

In the summer of 2024, France hosted the Olympic Games in Paris, bringing millions of people to the City of Lights. The same year, Netflix released a shark thriller that, similarly to the sports event, held a triathlon in the capital where the participants were in danger because of a giant shark and her offspring.

Under Paris premiered on June 5, 2024, on Netflix and it has been a resounding success. The shark thriller debuted at the top of the charts with massive numbers, raking in 40.9 million views in its first week alone. For the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, Under Paris continued its dominance in sixth place, adding 1 million views more, Tudum confirms.

The renaissance of sharksploitation films continues, as Variety is reporting that MCU star Ioan Gruffudd and DCs Ross Butler are set to team up for the new thriller, Zipline. Gruffudd portrayed Reed Richards in 2005s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, while Butler recently appeared in both Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods as Superhero Eugene.

Directed by Magnus Martens (Fear the Walking Dead) and written by George Mahaffey Jr. (Chief of Station), Zipline also stars Holland Roden and Sonia Ammar. Produced by Simple House Films, international rights are held by Black Bear, who will be presenting it to buyers at the American Film Market later this month. New cast members have been revealed for the upcoming horror thriller Night Patrol. Among them is Cm Punk, one of WWE's biggest stars who also happens to be experienced as a horror genre actor.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Night Patrol will feature Punk as part of the cast alongside horror genre fan favorite Justin Long. Other cast members include Jermaine Fowler (Sting), Rj Cyler (Power Rangers), Dermot Mulroney (Scream VI), Freddie Gibbs (Down With the King), Yg (White Boy Rick), Flying Lotus (Ash), Jon Oswald (Lowlife), and Nicki Micheaux (Lowlife).

The first edition of the U.K. Next Wave Genre Lab, the initiative founded by Film Constellation, Maskoon Fantastic Film Festival and Tatino Films, has found its first projects.

Following an open call led by Myriam Sassine, Evrim Ersoy, and Edward Parodi that saw hundreds of filmmakers apply to be a part of the development lab, 12 feature film projects have been selected highlighting genre stories from around the U.K.

Over the past couple years, Hollywood has realized something the internet’s known for years: YouTube is the home for indie horror. There is a veritable smorgasbord of short horror films posted across the platform, with some nabbing hundreds of thousands and even millions of views. And those films are helping YouTube creators like RackaRacka and Chris Stuckmann pave a path to the big screen.

The latest creator to join them is Curry Barker, whose 2023 horror short The Chair (5.5 million views) put him on the map, and whose latest project, a full-length, 62-minute found footage film called Milk & Serial, is turning him into a serious contender for top up-and-coming horror writer/director/actor/you-name-it-he’s-got-it.

Barker and his crew made Milk & Serial for $800. They all worked pro bono as the film’s cast of influencer-and-friends characters, so the production budget was used to compensate the one outside actor they hired.

The 60-minute found footage horror short Milk & Serial is making huge waves here in the horror community, already approaching half a million views since being uploaded just two weeks ago by the channel That’s a Bad Idea, an up-and-coming comedy duo made up of film-school-pals-turned-collaborators Curry Barker and Cooper Tomlinson.

The short film was made for just $800 and opted for a direct-to-YouTube release versus a more traditional release with a more traditional distributor, with the channel’s 600,000+ subscribers spreading it far and wide across the internet. Milk & Serial follows in the wake of the duo’s The Chair, a previous horror short that similarly went viral and passed 5 million views.

Needless to say, Barker and Tomlinson know what the hell they’re doing in the horror space. And in a chat with Variety this week, they tease that another horror movie is now in the works.

The duo mainly posts sketch videos to their TikTok and YouTube channels “that’s a bad idea,” while occasionally showcasing other projects, like Barker’s viral 2023 horror short “The Chair,” which has been watched on the latter more than 5.5 million times. After considering working with a distributor for “Milk & Serial,” Barker decided to drop the full movie on YouTube on Aug. 8. Since then, it’s been watched over 323,000 times (as of Aug.

The 2017 survival horror movie follows two sisters, Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt), stranded in a cage at the bottom of the ocean floor surrounded by hungry sharks. Right until its ending, 47 Meters Down is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and also features a number of great jump scares.

The shark movie was directed by Johannes Roberts and is notable for a surprise twist that reframes the ending after Lisa finds herself alone in the cage after Kate is seemingly killed by a shark.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.

Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.

Via his production company 18hz Productions, Walter Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year, for both theaters and streaming.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has greenlit the Johannes Roberts horror film Primate, with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) set to lead the cast. Roberts will direct the Walter Hamada-produced feature, which Roberts co-wrote with Ernest Riera.

The project falls under Hamada’s exclusive first-look deal with Paramount which began January 1, 2023, making him “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.”

The former DC Films boss steered DC to its highest-grossing movie Aquaman with $1.1 billion worldwide. He was also behind The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror series ever with more than $2 billion in global box office, 2017’s It and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, to name a few.
