Though the previous Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich certainly found an audience, many fans of the long-running survival horror video game series still feel that haven't had a really great adaptation. That could change with Zach Cregger at the helm.
The Barbarian director's next project as part of his current deal with New Line Cinema is Weapons, which recently wrapped production and is set to hit theaters in early 2026. However, THR confirmed that Cregger is indeed set to write and direct a new Resident Evil adaptation for Sony/Constantin late last year, and we now have word on who is set to play the lead.
As first reported by Daniel Richtman, Deadline has confirmed that Wolfs and Euphoria actor Austin Abrams is in talks to star in the movie. No details on the character he'd play were disclosed, but there is speculation that it might be Leon Kennedy.

About two years ago, we heard that producers Mark Lane and James Harris of Tea Shop Productions, who freaked out movie-goers with the shark thrillers 47 Meters Down and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, as well as the survival thriller Fall, were teaming up with Gavin Mehrtens and Ashley Holberry of Cowboy Cosmonaut for a new “nature run amok thriller,” a killer alligator movie that was, at the time, called The Bayou. That project has since been retitled Gator Creek and it’s set to be released through the likes of Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube Movies, Sky Store, BT Store, and Microsoft Store on March 24th. A trailer recently dropped online and can be seen in the embed above.
Mehrtens wrote the screenplay for Gator Creek, working from a story by Holberry. That story crash-lands a group of friends in the water-logged, inhospitable Louisiana swamplands where they’re hunted by a fearsome,...

A terrifying new creature feature is set to make its mark as Gator Creek prepares for release in the UK and Ireland on March 24. A project from the producers behind Fall and 47 Meters Down, this horror-thriller brings together the brutal survival instincts of classic alligator horrors with a modern twist—these beasts have evolved beyond anything nature ever intended.
Directed by Taneli Mustonen and Brad Watson, Gator Creek follows a group of young vacationers whose trip to Louisiana turns into a nightmare after a devastating plane crash leaves them stranded in the remote bayou. What begins as a desperate bid for survival against the elements quickly spirals into something far worse when the group discovers they are not alone. A pack of monstrously evolved alligators, altered by exposure to illegal toxic chemicals, has claimed the swamp as their hunting ground. Faster, smarter, and far more aggressive than their natural ancestors,...

So many of us love shark movies, but as fun as the subgenre can be, there is one problem they can't get past: they're all chasing the shadow of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, which is not only the best shark-centered movie ever made, but one of the most popular and best movies, no matter the genre. There have been a plethora of shark related films over the decades, but a lot don't even try to be like Jaws, and instead go the schlocky route. There are a few who sometimes get it right. Open Water was absolutely terrifying, and The Shallows was a great thrill ride. In 2017, 47 Meters Down, starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, was a fun surprise, with the scary premise of two divers stuck in a cage on the ocean floor while surrounded by great whites.

Netflix's Shark Thriller With the Stephen King Stamp of Approval Seemingly Reaches a Glorious Record

In the summer of 2024, France hosted the Olympic Games in Paris, bringing millions of people to the City of Lights. The same year, Netflix released a shark thriller that, similarly to the sports event, held a triathlon in the capital where the participants were in danger because of a giant shark and her offspring.
Under Paris premiered on June 5, 2024, on Netflix and it has been a resounding success. The shark thriller debuted at the top of the charts with massive numbers, raking in 40.9 million views in its first week alone. For the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, Under Paris continued its dominance in sixth place, adding 1 million views more, Tudum confirms.

The Meg franchise has put some high expectations on what Megalodons were like in real life, and, as might be expected, the Jason Statham action movies get a few things wrong. The Meg and The Meg 2 are based on the books of the same name by Steve Alten, a series of increasingly absurd and unbelievable, but admittedly fun, novels. The first The Meg premiered in 2018 and the sequel arrived in 2023. In both films, Jason Statham plays Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver who always ends up on the wrong end of a giant, murderous shark.
Among the many absurdities in The Meg is the design of its central villain. The "Meg" of the title is shorthand for "Megalodon", an ancient fish that used to patrol the world's oceans for 13 million years, before going extinct around the late Pliocene Epoch (via Nhm). A massive predatory shark that looked not unlike a magnified Great White Shark,...

The renaissance of sharksploitation films continues, as Variety is reporting that MCU star Ioan Gruffudd and DCs Ross Butler are set to team up for the new thriller, Zipline. Gruffudd portrayed Reed Richards in 2005s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, while Butler recently appeared in both Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods as Superhero Eugene.
Directed by Magnus Martens (Fear the Walking Dead) and written by George Mahaffey Jr. (Chief of Station), Zipline also stars Holland Roden and Sonia Ammar. Produced by Simple House Films, international rights are held by Black Bear, who will be presenting it to buyers at the American Film Market later this month. Based on the synopsis alone, it appears to be a fun flick which combines some of our favorite things, including a tropical setting, a ticking-clock premise, and, of course, sharks. When Curry Barker moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, he thought getting his short films on the festival circuit would be his path to making it as a director. But soon he discovered just uploading his films directly to YouTube was getting him attention. His 2023 horror short The Chair landed him Hollywood representation and a deal to direct a $1 million movie, Obsession. Then in August, he posted the $800 feature Milk & Serial, which he wrote, directed and starred in. It exploded online, attracting 1 million views.

Netflix has a wide range of survival thrillers and horrors available to stream but one of its titles exceeded expectations this year Under Paris. The French thriller premiered in early June, and it's still wildly popular.
Under Paris is currently enjoying its 15th week in Netflix's Top 10, taking the last spot between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22, with another million views, a huge feat for an international film. With little to no promo, Under Paris has been a huge hit since its premiere on June 5, beating even the ultimate monster, the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. Three months later, the monster of Under Paris is still holding on tightly to the charts.

Over the past couple years, Hollywood has realized something the internet’s known for years: YouTube is the home for indie horror. There is a veritable smorgasbord of short horror films posted across the platform, with some nabbing hundreds of thousands and even millions of views. And those films are helping YouTube creators like RackaRacka and Chris Stuckmann pave a path to the big screen.
The latest creator to join them is Curry Barker, whose 2023 horror short The Chair (5.5 million views) put him on the map, and whose latest project, a full-length, 62-minute found footage film called Milk & Serial, is turning him into a serious contender for top up-and-coming horror writer/director/actor/you-name-it-he’s-got-it.
Barker and his crew made Milk & Serial for $800. They all worked pro bono as the film’s cast of influencer-and-friends characters, so the production budget was used to compensate the one outside actor they hired.

The 60-minute found footage horror short Milk & Serial is making huge waves here in the horror community, already approaching half a million views since being uploaded just two weeks ago by the channel That’s a Bad Idea, an up-and-coming comedy duo made up of film-school-pals-turned-collaborators Curry Barker and Cooper Tomlinson.
The short film was made for just $800 and opted for a direct-to-YouTube release versus a more traditional release with a more traditional distributor, with the channel’s 600,000+ subscribers spreading it far and wide across the internet. Milk & Serial follows in the wake of the duo’s The Chair, a previous horror short that similarly went viral and passed 5 million views.
Needless to say, Barker and Tomlinson know what the hell they’re doing in the horror space. And in a chat with Variety this week, they tease that another horror movie is now in the works.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains minor spoilers for “Milk & Serial,” now available to watch on YouTube.
Curry Barker has delivered the year’s most unlikely hit.
The filmmaker and comedian is the mastermind behind “Milk & Serial,” a 62-minute horror feature about YouTube pranksters who get caught up in some rapidly escalating crises that ideally aren’t spoiled in advance. Made for only $800, the film co-stars Barker and his comedy partner, Cooper Tomlinson, who is also a producer.
The duo mainly posts sketch videos to their TikTok and YouTube channels “that’s a bad idea,” while occasionally showcasing other projects, like Barker’s viral 2023 horror short “The Chair,” which has been watched on the latter more than 5.5 million times. After considering working with a distributor for “Milk & Serial,” Barker decided to drop the full movie on YouTube on Aug. 8. Since then, it’s been watched over 323,000 times (as of Aug.

Deep Blue Sea balances cheese and intensity, creating a memorable creature feature with unique shark villains. Samuel L. Jackson's shocking death scene in the film takes risks, adding to the suspense and tension of the story. The twist ending of Deep Blue Sea defies horror tropes, making it a standout in the shark movie genre.
Director Renny Harlin had a few successes and some major bombs throughout his career in the '80s and '90s but achieved moderate recognition for Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea, both featuring Samuel L. Jackson. In modern cinema, he's best remembered for the latter, which only received mixed reviews upon its release but has succeeded in being one of the most beloved creature features starring the ultimate predators of the ocean. The 47 Meters Down ending offers a dark twist after a dramatic escape from sharks. Director Johannes Roberts considered a bleaker ending but added hope. The movie's ending echoes the brutal twist of The Descent, leaving a lasting impact.
The 47 Meters Down ending featured a miraculous escape from deadly sharks, only for the salvation of its central characters to be dashed by a dark last-minute twist. The 2017 survival horror movie follows two sisters, Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt), stranded in a cage at the bottom of the ocean floor surrounded by hungry sharks. Right until its ending, 47 Meters Down is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and also features a number of great jump scares.
The shark movie was directed by Johannes Roberts and is notable for a surprise twist that reframes the ending after Lisa finds herself alone in the cage after Kate is seemingly killed by a shark.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.
Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Kotsur’s other credits include Wild Prairie Rose, No Ordinary Hero, Universal Signs, The Number 23, and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mandalorian, Criminal Minds,...

Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) will lead the cast of the upcoming horror movie Primate, Deadline reports, with Johannes Roberts directing for Paramount Pictures.
Roberts co-wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera, the website’s report notes.
Plot details for Primate, at this time, are unfortunately under wraps.
Walter Hamada is producing Primate, part of a new horror pact with Paramount.
Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.
Via his production company 18hz Productions, Walter Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year, for both theaters and streaming.

Let’s make one thing clear: the premise of Under Paris is seriously silly. It’s practically a prerequisite of shark movies these days — in a post-Jaws world, there’s no chance of making the greatest shark film of all time, so instead, filmmakers largely double down on daftness or campy fun. That’s been the approach of The Meg and its sequel, the ultra-pulpy Deep Blue Sea, the chompy thrills of The Shallows, and 47 Meters Down. Now, quite preposterously, get ready for sharks in Paris; rather than ‘Les dents de la mer’, Xavier Gens’ disposably entertaining Netflix film plumps for ‘Les dents de la Seine’.
For the most part, Gens — previously behind Hollywood’s Hitman adaptation, and New French Extremity favourite Frontier(s) — plays the shark-movie hits. Our central figure is scientist Sophia (Bérénice Bejo), who has personal beef with ‘Lilith’, the rapidly evolving mako shark responsible for...

The Strangers franchise seems to like bringing in directors who have made successful shark movies. Before he directed the new trilogy, Renny Harlin did the 1999 aquatic sci-fi/horror Deep Blue Sea and Johannes Roberts helmed the cage dive gone wrong, 47 Meters Down (2017). Both directors know how to deliver popcorn thrills, but of the two, Roberts is the one who gives a unique entry into the Strangers franchise. Bryan Bertino's original 2008 film was bleak and nihilistic, perfect for the time it was released among other gritty horror films when torture porn was popular. But 10 years was enough time to have passed that a sequel didn't have to match the gritty psychological horror tone of the original. Released in 2018, The Strangers: Prey at Night arrived earlier in the same year that saw the Halloween reboot, and both would be early starters to a revival of the slasher subgenre. While the...

One of horror's most reliable franchises is coming back for a brand new installment next summer. While little has been revealed by way of specifics, Sony Pictures has dated "Insidious 6" for next summer. The film is now due to hit theaters on August 29, 2025, per Variety. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly, supernatural lovers of the world.
What's truly interesting is that this is just one of two new "Insidious" movies in the works at the moment. Sony and Blumhouse Productions are also collaborating on a spin-off titled "Thread: An Insidious Tale," which will star Mandy Moore ("47 Meters Down") and Kumail Nanjiani ("Eternals"). Jeremy Slater ("Moon Knight") set to write and direct. In short, the long-running franchise is expanding after taking a five-year break between 2018's "Insidious: The Last Key" and last year's "Insidious: The Red Door."
Dating back to director James Wan's original breakout hit "Insidious" in 2011, this franchise has been remarkably consistent.

The Requin. The Reef: Stalked. The Black Demon. Now Something in the Water. I’m reaching my breaking point with shark attack movies that are too distracted by other plotlines to deliver on their promise: shark attacks. Hayley Easton Street’s Something in the Water might be the biggest offender listed, taking roughly thirty minutes until the first shark-related incident, then another fifteen(ish) minutes for the first of frustratingly few substantial shark spottings. Cat Clarke’s screenplay tries to establish poignant storytelling about hate crimes, broken relationships, and debilitating traumas, but in doing so, forgets about the massive shark plastered all over the film’s marketing materials. Street and Clarke aim to elevate shark cinema with emotional throughlines, but sink the entire project with an alarmingly imbalanced approach.

It’s impressive that despite the massive success of Jaws making its bite mark on pop culture back in 1975, many movies have unapologetically attempted to follow in its footsteps to this very day. One of those films is the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down, which spawned a sequel in 2019, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. A third movie in the series is now set to swim ashore as 47 Meters Down: The Wreck will be launching its sales campaign at the Cannes Market. Johannes Roberts and screenwriter Ernest Riera return to co-write this new installment, which will be directed by veteran horror director Patrick Lussier, whose credits include My Bloody Valentine.
The plot synopsis for the third entry, per Deadline, reads,
“The story will follow a father who is determined to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as they bond during a scuba dive in beautiful tropical waters while exploring a famous shipwreck. But soon after their descent,...
