Director Abner Pastoll made a great first impression with his 2015 debut feature Road Games, the bilingual, twisted tale set in France and starring Barbara Crampton. For his sophomore film, Pastoll trades the rural France setting and the Hitchcockian vibes for a Park Chan Wook-esque thriller and the gritty realism of urban Ireland in A […]

This year’s Arrow Video FrightFest opens with the UK premiere of Ant Timpson’s deviously edgy stunner Come to Daddy, starring Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Martin Donovan and Michael Smiley.
Written by The Greasy Strangler co-writer Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Timpson), Elijah Wood puts in a career best performance as thirty-something Norval, who receives an out-of-the-blue invitation to visit his perpetually uncaring dad, As his father’s growing animosity towards him reaches a dark fever pitch. this hilarious, inventively gross, core-shocking adventure moves smartly towards its uncompromising and unexpected finale.
The festival reaches its bloody conclusion with the world premiere of Abner Pastoll’s A Good Woman is Hard to Find, a superbly crafted Belfast-based crime story. It showcases a tour-de-force performance by Sarah Bolger, who plays a recently widowed mother of two desperate to know who murdered her husband in front of their young son,...

Okay, so here’s the thing. This month I wanted to find a good deep cut from the great Tom Atkins, whose charm and mustache thrilled us throughout the ’80s, even as he played a lecherous doctor, a kinda lecherous resident of a quaint seaside town, and a caustic cop haunted by his past (who I assume was also a lech). So when I dove into his filmography in search of a lesser-known vehicle, I perked up when I found the 1980 psychological drama The Ninth Configuration.
Alas, after watching the film, it turns out that Atkins has a relatively minor role, but there’s no way I could skip this movie, as it features a Murderers’ Row of horror character actor royalty. And so I figured, since baseball season did just start...*Puts on best Bob Uecker voice from Major League.*

Belgium's Wallimage has awarded four filmmakers significant project investment in the company's highly competitive 85th year of helping to bolster its local film industry. Two genre films in particular have caught our attention with Wallimage's support becoming a crucial vote of confidence for the projects that are both currently in development. The first is Mandy, the second feature film by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow), starring Nicolas Cage, which is set to film this summer in Belgium. The second is the upcoming Irish thriller A Good Woman Is Hard to Find directed by Abner Pastoll (Road Games), who is working with Frakas following their success with Raw. A Good Woman, described by Wallimage as "Ken Loach meets Tarantino", recently cast Sarah Bolger and was written...

Short of the DayA high-octane short.
It just takes a momentary twist to make a good film great. Think about The Sixth Sense: until it’s final revelation that [Spoiler (?)] Bruce Willis has been dead the whole time, the most intriguing bit of that film was wondering how a mook like Willis got a doctorate in psychology. But then they drop that twist and oh shit, you got yourself a movie.
Getaway Driver, a short film directed by Abner Pastoll, is another example of this. What starts out as a cool, slick, high-octane short about a lady and her pug trying to escape a bad guy via a sweet ride becomes something else entirely in its final seconds, something I’m obviously not going to spoil here. As for that escape, Pastoll and director of photography Richard Bell have choreographed a thrilling, breakneck, nail-biter of a chase set in a parking garage that’s highly reminiscent — in...

Take a couple minutes out of your day to enjoy some top shelf stunt driving in Abner Pastoll's two minute short film Getaway Driver. The UK director of Road Games and the upcoming A Good Woman in Hard to Find got together with stunt drivers Stephanie Carey and Tony Lucken. and together with Mabel the pug made a dandy demonstration of how to film a car chase in a parkade. A dandy example of how to film a car chase anywhere. The music is by Makeup and Vanity Set, which we have written about their work before here at ScreenAnarchy. 2016 has been an exceptional all-around year for horror and sci-fi films—from the indie realm, we’ve been gifted with an enormous amount of brilliant cinematic stories throughout the past 12 months, and we even saw studios step up their game with an almost unprecedented amount of quality releases.
And along with this wealth of top-notch entertainment, we also saw an incredible number of fantastic female characters over the course of 2016—some heroic, some villainous, but all endlessly engaging in their own right. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to celebrate some of my favorite female performers from this year who gave us complex, interesting, and wholly compelling reasons to keep falling in love with genre cinema all over again (and again).

Little Sister is writer/director Zach Clark's fifth feature film, and arguably it may be his best yet. It stars a talented young cast (Addision Timlin and Keith Poulson) mixed with seasoned actors such as Barbara Crampton and Ally Sheedy. The result is a delight to watch --- and a very different family drama --- one thankfully not sickingly sweet. Barbara Crampton has made quite the resurgence in horror films lately --- Applecart, Death House Beyond the Gates, Sun Choke, Tales of Halloween, We Are Still Here, You're Next, and Road Games --- to name a few. I caught up with her at the 20th annual Fantasia International Film Festival to discuss Little Sister (where it screened last night to a very receptive crowd) as well as what she's been up to lately, and what's next for...

We have a busy week of horror and sci-fi entertainment releases to look forward to, especially for those of you cult and indie horror fans out there. Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Lucio Fulci’s insane Cat in the Brain to Blu-ray, and the recent indie thriller Road Games is getting a release on July 12th as well, courtesy of Scream Factory. One of my personal favorites from 2016, Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room arrives on both formats this Tuesday via Lionsgate, and Synapse Films is releasing the recent Creepshow documentary Just Desserts.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for July 12th include Model Hunger, Slasher: Season One, 13 Cameras, the Steelbook edition of Blood and Black Lace, and Pop Art editions of The Birds, Psycho, and King Kong.

What is it? Jeanne and Jean are a young couple in love, but after their fairy tale wedding the pair are brought before the local lord to make an offering. He forces himself on her instead before sharing her with his court, and when even her new husband turns his back on her she finds pained, messy comfort with a devil-sent imp who offers to help in exchange for her soul.
Why buy it? Eiichi Yamamoto’s early ’70s slice of psychedelia, erotica, and still-relevant commentary is a beautifully disturbing descent into our shared history of sexual violence, oppression, and the abuse of authority. If it sounds heavy, well, it is — it’s also extremely graphic with watercolor frames and hand-drawn animation that capture the atrocities with gorgeously imaginative imagery. It...

Let the games begin! We have clips from IFC Midnight's Road Games and Slasher Season 1, which will both be released on Blu-ray by Scream Factory on July 12th.
Road Games Blu-ray / DVD: "After a disastrous summer trip, Jack (Andrew Simpson, Rebellion) finds himself hitchhiking through the sun-drenched rural French countryside with nothing but his British passport. Unaware of dangers that are plaguing the roads, he tries without much success to get home. Along the way, he partners with another hitchhiker, a beautiful French girl, Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume, Kiss of the Damned). But when they accept a ride from a local oddball (Frédéric Pierrot, The Returned), the pair find themselves thrown in a deadly game of cat and mouse in which nothing is what it seems. Bursting with nonstop twists and turns and an undercurrent of Hitchcockian malice, this riveting psychological thriller is a hell of a ride.

Hello, readers! Welcome back for the next installment of our monthly feature here at Daily Dead, “Deadly Dialogue: A Conversation on Cinema”, in which we catch up with notable folks from the horror and sci-fi genres—both in front of and behind the camera—to discuss the films that inspired them to become the artists they are today.
Ever since she first endeared herself to genre fans everywhere with her wondrous performance in Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, Barbara Crampton has been one of the most revered and respected Scream Queens of all-time, due to her gracious nature, her immeasurable talents, and the energy she brings to each and every one of her projects.
At the press day for Road Games, the thriller recently released by IFC Midnight, Crampton discussed some of the actors that influenced her decision to follow a creative path professionally, and she also shared a lovely story about cinematic icon Danny Kaye.

One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.
Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.
Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?
Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that.

I love movies like Road Games that seem to toy with you from beginning to end, and yet, sometimes those are the hardest films to discuss in a review because you never want to reveal too much for potential viewers. That being said, writer/director Abner Pastoll does a fantastic job of playing up suspicions throughout Road Games, a film that’s shrouded in a dubious sense of mystery and has a bit of a Hitchcockian sensibility to it as well. Its ending may be a bit divisive to many, but I dug the direction Pastoll goes with his surprising, take-no-prisoners finale.
Road Games follows British hitchhiker Jack (Andrew Simpson) as he makes his way through the sun-soaked countryside in France, traveling with only his passport and doing everything he can to get back home to England after his idyllic vacation goes horribly wrong. Along the way, he crosses paths...

Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.
Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.

Guys, can we all agree that hitchhiking is never a good idea? Great, now let's move on and into Road Games, the new thriller by UK director Abner Pastoll that overcomes a somewhat trope-y hitchhikers-in-danger premise by showcasing confident pacing, great acting and expert skill in building tension and suspicion in the viewer.
It also helps that the film is gorgeously shot by cinematographer Eben Bolter, who succeeds in making us believe that dreary 'ol England (where the film was shot) could look even remotely like the sunny South of France.
The film starts with an introduction to Jack, an English traveler trying to hitch a ride back to the Calais-Dover ferry since his holiday in France has gone to shit. When he meets Veronique, a free spirit played wonderfully by Jos&eac [Continued ...]...

This trailer for the UK/France co-production, Road Games, isn't new, but for some reason this film flew under our radar until IFC Midnight were kind enough to sent us note about the film's release on VOD Friday, March 4.
This is UK director Abner Pastoll's first feature and it looks great. A cursory glance on IMDb tells me the film was very well liked on the fest circuit and is being described as "Hitchcockian" by a lot of folks. Certainly, this is my kind of trailer. All tone and no spoilers. I'm in.

Well here it is, my Top 15 films of 2015. If you’ve ever read one of my end of year lists, you’ll know that my choices tend to be a million miles away from the mainstream; and this year is no different! This year has been Amazing for films, I could easily had penned a list of 52 films – one for each week of the year – but instead I managed to narrow down the choices to 28 films quite swiftly. However, to hit this years target of a Top 15 (for 2015 geddit?) it took a hell of a lot of work. I think this list even surprises me – there’s a number of films that going back over the 508[!] films we’ve reviewed here on Nerdly in 2015, at the time I reviewed them, I didn’t expect would stay with me till the end of the very end of the year. Oh, and...

They discover that not only are the house’s first residents, the vengeful Dagmar family, still there – but so is an ancient power. A primal darkness slumbers under the old home, waking up every...

Set in rural France (but shot for the most part here in the UK) Road Games sees hitchhiker Jack rescues Véronique from a road rage altercation. Alone on the road the twosome decide to travel together for safety’s sake after learning a serial killer is cutting a murderous swathe through the region. Tired and hungry they decide against their better judgment to take up an offer to stay the night at a mysterious elderly couple’s mansion…

Returning to Leicester Square for its sixteenth year as the UK's leading celebration of horror and fantasy cinema, Film4 FrightFest 2015 is also set to be the biggest yet. With 19 world premières, along with 16 European and 24 UK ones, a wide and varied programme made up of a whopping 76 titles will screen across five glorious and ghoulish days. Barbara Crampton, star of Lovecraftian gore feasts Re-Animator and From Beyond, is the festival's guest of honour. As well as making an on-stage appearance to discuss her career in horror, Crampton can also be seen in four films: Road Games, Sun Choke, Tales of Halloween and We Are Still Here. Kicking things off on Thursday 27 August is David Keating's eagerly anticipated Cherry Tree.

One of four films at this years Frightfest to feature 80s horror icon Barbara Crampton (the others being We Are Still Here, Road Games and Tales of Halloween), Sun Choke stars the wonderful Sarah Hagan, who many will remember from TV shows like Freaks and Geeks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer – where she played one of the potential slayers, Amanda, Here Hagan channels that same sweet, shy persona with an underlying edge she had in Buffy. However unlike that TV show, where that edge would ultimately channel itself into a heroic vampire slaying role, the underlying edge here is more of the unhinged kind – you literally spend the entire movie just waiting for her character Janie to snap.
