Began well, but got weird.
nortegastar14 December 2023
I really liked the production in the beginning. All characters had an amazing developemnt and growing arches, but little things began to occur, like several sudden costume jumps in scenes/ situations which are happening temporarily just a while after the other, on the same day. Then appeared the breaks in the continuity of the story itself and it was difficult to know why something simply occurred. There were plenty of examples, but the most irritating was the one within the evolution of the love story of the protagonists. Also the little, but super fast after credit snipets were not included in the next episodes and things just came to be without further explanation. Maybe there was too much to tell and screen time was not enough.

Love is everything and the beginning of everything. The heart to love your parents and to love your children. It all starts with a couple's love.
hanalisss27 December 2023
This historical drama brought a fresh and original script to the table, a rarity in the genre. The narrative bravely delves into the hidden aspects of society during that period, shedding light on topics often overlooked. The exploration of ageism, the challenges faced by widows, and the subtle portrayal of homosexuality added a layer of realism that made the drama stand out.

One of the most compelling aspects was its unapologetic confrontation of societal norms, particularly the discrimination against women. Despite enduring prejudices, the portrayal of women as powerful figures managing households showcased their resilience and strength. The drama succeeds in making viewers reflect on historical injustices and appreciate the often-overlooked roles women played in shaping families.

The comedic elements were not only entertaining but also remarkably on point. Rowoon's portrayal of the male lead was nothing short of exceptional, perfectly capturing the essence of the genre. While the main leads lacked chemistry, the secondary couples more than made up for it. Their captivating stories added depth to the overarching plot, making the drama a wholesome and emotionally resonant experience.

While a few plot holes and questionable twists, especially in the last episode, may have raised eyebrows, the overall journey was a positive one. This one managed to deliver a feel-good drama with a satisfying ending that leaves the audience content. It's a testament to the show's ability to balance social commentary, humor, and heartwarming relationships, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking a unique historical drama experience.

Enjoyable but could have been better

Warning: Spoilers
I love these historical romantic dramas. This was really well done and the characters were great. It started off really well but towards the end, some things got a little confusing. It seemed as though it was rushed. And the very end was extremely disappointing. I was expecting a full on lovely kiss between the two main characters and instead they just stared at each other smiling. Not much thought put into that. So it left me wanting more.

I loved Kim Ro-Woon in The King's Affection (One of the best Kdramas I have ever seen) and even though he's a fantastic actor, I feel this drama could have been better. But still worth watching!

Endearingly Entertaining!
mangocherriy20 December 2023
Humour, romance and palace intrigue all come together beautifully in this well-crafted K-Drama that almost gives you the feel of a Shakespearean Comedy! I started watching this drama with no expectations. And my oh my this show turned out to be a gem! Had to keep rewatching many scenes many times, not just for their entertainment value but also sometimes to decipher some witty Korean dialogue and social banter.

The locations, sets and interiors are so aesthetically pleasing and the entire ensemble of cast members did a fabulous job. Special mention: the BGM!

The FL character has the right mix of spunkiness and sweetness and Choi Yi-Hyun nailed it. However, I have to hand it to Rowoon for being outstanding in this drama. He is brilliant as the Nerdy Scholar who cannot even run properly, let alone hold a sword. He and his butler played by actor Kim Hyun-mok display great comedic timing. Rowoon is a treat to watch as the conceited resentful grouch, especially in the scenes when his psychosomatic symptoms flare up. Just his body language, facial expressions and awkwardness are guaranteed to give you quite a few laughs.

Kudos to the writer for making Lady Park such an interesting character. With just last couple of episodes left to air, I sincerely hope that this drama gives us a happy ending, please!

Absolute Delight
shahnahamza15 December 2023
The Matchmakers is one among the recent dramas released in the last quarter of 2023 that I have watched without skipping a single scene. Even if Iam fan of the actors, I don't continue if the plot or the script is not good. Here it started off as a light romcom and slowly began exploring the weight of the emotions of the characters. I loved it by all means. The performances by leads are commendable as they have managed very well to showcase both the goofiness in the older episodes and the restraint later on. I would like to appreciate Choi Yi Hyun for the growth she has showcased and Rowoon too for the improvement 🖤. No character is a filler character here and that is another highlight. Giving space to everyone no matter what their screentime is a great quality . It's indeed an absolute delight for me and the frames are mesmerizing, the natural colors around them are so beautiful and it's comforting to look at it. I would recommend it to anyone.

A feast for the eyes and the soul.
jmzyfjc4 January 2024
The Matchmakers is one of the best Kdramas I've seen, and I've been watching them for several years now. The entire cast, without exception, was amazing, and the cinematography was incredible. Every shot was gorgeous, the colors spectacular, and every detail attended to. The plot unfolded with unexpected revelations and twists that kept me guessing until the end. I absolutely LOVED the multiple matches that happened during the show, and each couple had a unique story and journey to travel. And while tragedy was the foundation for our main couple, their grief was allowed to play out and their struggles to feel like they weren't betraying their first spouses was resolved compassionately and realistically. In short, I loved this so much, and I'm sure I'll be rewatching it to see everything I missed the first time around. I can't wait!

Fun, sweet, romance
jaldred-6612025 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you are looking for historical accuracy or a fast paced action series then this is not for you. It ambles along slowly and has what sometimes seems an annoying habit of stopping on a cliffhanger and then explaining the cliffhanger in the next episode but I didn't mind it in this series so much. There was quite a lot of repetiton as well but somehow since this was a gentle series it was fine. At the end of episode 14 I thought they had found a really clever way to solve the problem of getting them together but then they came up with another ending in the final which I thought was a bit farfetched but seems to leave room for a second series. Anyway, if you are just looking for a feelgood series you could do worse but don't expect anything groundbreaking. The acting was good, I especially liked the fl's brother.

One of the better Josean dramas, even pokes fun at some tired tropes
leahcubed6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
9.5/10 is my rating. This is a 2023 South Korean Romantic comedy drama with 16, 60 minute episodes

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

Shim Jung-woo (Rowoon) is still salty about being "sold" into marriage into the royal family. To make things worse his new wife, the Princess, died from poison on the eve of their wedding. Which locks him into celibate bachelorhood and makes it so he has way too much time on his hands. He is known as the grouchy Prince (resentful man) as he uses his exceptional intellect to ensure no one else is having fun either (in the guise of upholding strict Josean law). Jung Soon-deok (Cho Yi-hyun) loved her husband but is a young widow locked in the role of little madam as the second daughter-in-law of the Left State Councilor. She prefers to use her skills as a matchmaker to playing lady of the house. Fate lands these two unlikely accomplices in league to get three old maidens married in order to manipulate the politics to allow the young crown prince to marry. Neither should be interested in anyone romantically as social tradition ties them to their deceased spouses. Will the two succeed in their unlikely task of getting all three old maids wed? Will their hearts abide by the dictates of society?

Review

One of the better Josean dramas I have seen. It even pokes fun at some of the tropes such as the "I love You So I am Going To Leave You" trope. Rowoon is always a joy to watch, he can play such a diversity of characters well. Multiple romances in this, as would be expected given the topic, and they all end well. It is entertaining throughout and ends happy. I recommend to fans of either of the main leads, Josean drama fans, those that like a little action, and a little mystery and not an overwhelming amount of politics. If it was on, I would watch it again and I recommend it as an excellent drama.

Spoilers

I liked the "resentful" man angle and was a little disappointed to find he was not coerced into the marriage. It was less appealing to me that he actually loved the Princess. I thought him being forced made his intractable nature more understandable.

The character growth in this was amazing. The King, for example, I did not think I would like him but he turned out to be one of the best characters. The way he saved both Jung-woo and Sein-dook in the end was heart warming. It was clear he grew to love and appreciate Jung-woo as not only a close trusted advisor but like another son. The queen was also an awesome character in the way she lived her son and how kind she was to others. The young Crown Prince was bright, wise and kind. The royal family in this series is one of few royal families, in Josean dramas, I have liked.

Soon-deok's mother-in-law (MIL) was purely evil and I know it was supposed to be her punishment was being alone but I would have liked to have seen her seriously punished. Or for her to come around, accept her daughter's choice, and allow her daughter-in-law to have a life. I was disappointed Soon-deok did not see her MIL's tweet true character sooner. She admired her through most of the series even when many of the things she was doing were underhanded and evil. I got she was being filial but there were points when I wish she had stood up to her or turned away from her more.

It ending with Jung-woo and Soon-deok just having a magical romance, a courtship, prior to marriage was a little unsatisfying. After all they had gone through to be able to be together, ending in their marriage would have felt more "happily ever after" than we are just going to essentially date and marry later.

#KimSeokWoo

#Rowoon

#ChoYiHyun.

An adult getting married a child and no chemistry between the leads!!
helengrigoriadou2 January 2024
I was waiting to see this drama and expecting so much more because I like the cast but at the end no. The story was boring and silly, lack of connection and chemistry between the male and the female leads and is such a shame because i like Rowoon and Cho Yi hyun. I really don't know if it was the story or the problem is that she looks like his little sister and on the top of that no romantic interaction between them, not even at the end. The end was unsatisfying like not punishment for the mother in law and the most outrageous the fact that they put a 14 year old boy to match with a 24 year old woman. Again I like so much Cho Yi hyun specially in "All of us are dead" and of course Rowoon but this drama at least for me was a waste of time.

I was not able to skip or fast forward even a second! One of the best romantic comedy dramas ever.An absolute pleasure and a masterwork of art
I am currently at the last episode and I thought I should write a review " The matchmakers" in case if I become lazy once the series is finished. I have not been able to skip or fast forward even a one second of this absolutely amazing drama. If you are a regular Korean drama viewer you know that the first few episodes of most Korean dramas are wonderful and then it gets really boring until the end. So many dramas get lost in political and family feuds during Middle episodes and it becomes boring and a bitter experience for the viewer. Let me tell you that the matchmakers is one of the absolutely wonderful feel good and beautifully crafted dramas I have ever seen in my life. Whoever wrote this story should be given an award as the story itself is extremely interesting and written in a brilliant, sophisticated , heartfelt and funny way. The clothes are heavenly I really love the traditional Korean clothes and their colours in this drama. The backgrounds reminds me of Wes Anderson's Grand budafest Hotel and they are absolutely pleasure to look at. I found myself stopping and rewinding the episodes as the backgrounds were extremely beautiful at times. Music of this drama speaks to the heart especially the classical orchestral music played in the background. The cast is perfect for the story and I really do love the character of the King as he is sophisticated and funny. This drama has many love stories within it, so if you are a fan of romantic comedy who like dramas like business proposal then this is absolutely a MUST for you. Let me tell you this drama is an absolute gem and I wish this drama would gain the popularity of Love in the Moonlight. I will try to watch this drama again in another few years as this drama gave me so much pleasure and laughs. It's also important to point out the drama focuses on the injustices and customs during the joseon period. The matchmakers will teach you about loyalty to your family, honesty, filial duty to your parents, being content, being virtuous, being not greedy but being selfless. Just watch this! I hope this drama win few awards. May you be well and happy, with metta loving kindness to you.

A light-hearted romp through Joseon matchmaking
rickyou-6218128 December 2023
I have watched a fair number of Joseon era shows, and this ranks with the best of them. (Add to your watch list: The Crowned Clown, 100 Days My Prince, The Red Sleeve and the Rookie Historian). It also beats out the only other Matchmaking show I have seen: Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency. The basic plot is fairly straightforward: a brilliant but nerdy scholar marries the King's daughter who dies on their wedding night, leaving him a prince but with virtually nothing to do. Through happenstance, he gets mixed up with a widowed matchmaker who is also from a noble family. Neither one knows the secret identity of the other. He is charged with finding brides within 2 months for 3 spinsters or he will be forced to drink poison. While winding through the archaic courtship practices of the day, we find the expected (but well done) mix of court intrigue, murder, situational comedy, and a small bit of action. In terms of acting. The two leads have excellent chemistry and are in good humor. Particularly noteworthy, in my opinion, are the villainess (mother- in-law) who seems to be making a career of these kinds of appearances (as in the Red Sleeve), and the youngest of the three spinster sisters who positively glows when she gets going and is on screen. The King is a superb performer who I think particularly steps up this time in his acting game. Everything about this show is excellent. Highly recommended.

Dumbfounding
danigerch17 January 2024
The way this kdrama's potential and momentum was wasted leaves me dumbfounded.

They got Rowoon perfectly cast and yet didn't properly use his comedic timing, nor the comedy of errors narrative. That's when The Matchmakers shined. Sadly, it took another route.

The stories between the couples the leads were interesting enough but so underwhelming, underdeveloped and unfinished, I can't help but feel we didn't spend enough time with them to engage or care.

The wildest part was when, somehow, the scriptwriter thought it a good idea to match a literal underage child with a grown woman. I don't care how historically accurate this is, ew. They marry and we don't see anything happen but she's literal a older sister/mother figure.

And the resolution for the leads... I can't. Just, wow.

Good Enough
PennyReviews25 January 2024
Korean Drama '' The Matchmakers '' is a historical romantic comedy.

The drama has a delightful to watch female lead, who was adorable, sassy, feisty, and nailed her emotional moments. She actually carried the drama when things started getting cheesy and boring.

Also, the couple was enjoyable to watch, as they had interesting banter and their dynamics were spot on. However, the love story was just okay, taking off only toward the ending of the series, and being more or less unoriginal. Still, the drama handled them having a significant other that they missed masterfully.

The performances, finally, were pretty great by everyone in the cast, even the side characters. The final episodes, however, were rushed and boring.

So, overall, five out of ten.
