This is another edition in the "Under the Radar series" and it's also an honorable mention in favorites in the "run and gun" genre. This game is really a different kind of run and gun that you really don't see often, the only other game I know is slightly similar in nature is "The Tin Star" another game from the Taito company and under the radar gem that could be a story for another time.
One of the things that make the game unique is of course its setting is 1920-30s America which is in the old time Gangster genre. You can say this game is the closest we'd have if the film "The Untouchables" was ever made into an arcade game; as this game was obviously inspired by that movie. I was drawn to this game because there really aren't many games that use the old time Gangster genre and it's always a breath of fresh air whenever they do things like this.
I really love the graphical presentation which is the same kind for the game "Elevator Action 2" as it's sort of the small but big on detail style. Really like the designs and details on the sprites but mainly the backgrounds of the game which are the real stars of the game. There is also some cut scenes which are cool looking as they looks like big comic book panels, as you progress we see so does the story, despite not very deep but nice all the same as they make you almost feel like you're watching a movie.
However, like all these run and guns were all here for the action. In the game you're in one singular area and to exit the area you have to take down a quota of enemies within. You of course have a lot of power ups/weapons that you can collect which are hidden in the property or oncoming enemies. My favorite is of course the signature weapon in all the old time Gangster pics which is the Tommy Gun. It's just cool as it feel almost like the more balanced weapon of the bunch, from range, speed and stopping power. But the only shame like with all the collected weapons is you can only use it until the ammo runs out, so make the shots count. Difficulty is on the medium level, as the game starts out with a reasonable ease but then does ramp up a bit when the quota rises but also the surroundings.
Speaking of surroundings, as I said they are the real stars of the game. They're really well detailed and I like that each of the settings is always a different kind of challenge. And gives the game an element of strategy as in them you always have to learn to use them to your advantage; from not staying in one place for too long, using some of the environment as weapons in the right places, using some positions as temporary cover and even trying to fight and get into the right position and range to hit any of the enemies that are positioned or coming your way. But what really makes this game a lot of fun is the structural and collateral damage that you and your opponents do. Who'd of thought that damage can be a thing of beauty, as you see a lot of beautiful and well detailed structures that you just know are just begging to be destroyed.
The only misfires of the game are the boss battles their too much the same thing. They're not bad boss battles but I just feel the challenge in them needed to be differentiated more, like may 'be one boss is a strongman that uses both guns and objects in the room as weapons, at least something to make the fight more interesting. Another misfire is the game is a little short, though same can be said about other run and guns, ride may 'be sort but a sweet ride all the same; so, I can't complain much it makes this game a good weekend rental game.
This hidden gem is worth a shot as it's dead-on target for fun.
