Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, the Bollywood action thriller was theatrically released on January 31, 2025. It opened to mixed reviews from critics, but the performance of Shahid Kapoor was appreciated unanimously. It had a share of massy elements but that didn’t help in getting much traction. Since the buzz was also low on the ground level, the film was ignored by the audience.

An ending twist so surprising and risky that it made you gasp. And a performance by a leading man vulnerable and layered enough to enable you to get past the problematic portrayal of identity. These were some of the aspects which made Rosshan Andrrews’ 2013 film Mumbai Police, starring a terrific Prithviraj Sukumaran, such a standout.

Now, 12 years later, the same director has reworked the delicious story by Bobby-Sanjay for Hindi audiences. But this version has little of that power. Deva is a diluted, labored retread.

The biggest fault line is that the remake writers — Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal, with Arshad Syed and Sumit Arora — have expanded and changed the narrative to serve the stardom of its lead actor.

I seriously wanted to dislike Rosshan Andrrews’ adaptation of his Malayalam film Mumbai Police for what the writers have done to the original in the second half. A key gay character’s dark secret has been completely wiped out and replaced—and here comes the surprise—replaced by a much more profound dilemma of social approbation and individual conscience.

In the second half, there is a defining sequence where the untameable cop Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor) tells his copy-buddy Rohan D’Silva (Pavail Gulatie) why he did what he did. It is the moment that will be flashed on screen if and when Shahid Kapoor gets a lifetime achievement award.

It is strange and saddening how most fellow critics have missed the combustive, compelling adaptive modes applied by screenwriter Bobby-Sanjay along with Abbas Dalal, Hussain Dalal, Arshad Syed, and Sumit Arora into the distinctive invigorating Hindi adaptation.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt received death threats/extortion calls from an unidentified person who was demanding a sum of 50 lakhs from the Bhatt family recently. According to a report in Times of India, Bhatt received a threat call on February 26, which was initially believed to be a prank call. A series of text messages and WhatsApp messages followed the call and a person claiming to be a gang leader threatened that if he failed to pay up, the person would fire rounds of bullets at daughter Alia and wife Soni. Following the death threat, Bhatt filed a complaint on Wednesday in the Juhu Police Station under section 387 (causing a person to fear death or grievous hurt, to commit extortion). Upon registering the case, Anti Extortion Cell of Mumbai Police with help of Up Stf have identified and detained the extortionist, who also asked Bhatt to deposit the money in a Lucknow-based bank branch.

Further Rabia Khan had demanded that Jiah's actor boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi should be tried for murder and not for abetment of suicide. Now we hear that despite the Cbi informing the Mumbai High Court that its team had ruled out murder in actor Jiah Khan Case, a division bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil asked Rabia to prepare the list of anomalies and submit it on August 23. The bench said the list should have three columns-one listing anomalies in police probe, the second enumerating anomalies in Cbi investigation and the third mentioning Rabia's views on the points left out in the probe.

The said leak is already being investigated by the Mumbai Police. To that effect, even a case has been registered under the Copyright and Information Technology Act. Cbfc's Chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani rubbished all the allegations that a Censor Board member was behind the leak. He said that the leaked copy was not the one that was submitted to the Censor Board for examination. He added that they (the Cbfc) will surely cooperate with the investigation.

Former actress Jiah Khan's suicide case has undergone several tribulations for the past three years. The actress was found hanging herself at her residence on June 3 but this case later culminated into a murder trial after Jiah's mother Rabia Khan accused the actress' boyfriend and actor Sooraj Pancholi on the same.

Though as of now, the case is being considered as a suicide with Sooraj's ongoing trial on abetment of suicide, Rabia refuses to bog down. On the other hand, lawyer of Sooraj, Prashant Patil has allegedly stumbled upon evidence that can change the course of the case. Patil has revealed that he has found evidence that prove that Jiah Khan had suicidal tendencies and was undergoing treatment for depression. He also claimed that any such details that are related to a victim's hypertension tendencies should be put forth before the court and Rabia Khan failed to do so.

Readers may recall singer Ankit Tiwari and his tryst with the law when he was arrested for allegedly raping a woman late last year. In fact the Mumbai Police, acting on a complaint filed by his (alleged) 'then-girlfriend', whom he had allegedly raped repeatedly between October 2012 and December 2013, but did not keep his word of marrying her, had arrested Ankit Tiwari on May 8.

The latest update on the case is that, a special women's court, yesterday, rejected the discharge plea moved by Ankit Tiwari, who said that the allegations which were made by the victim in the written statement to the police and the Fir were totally different.

Earlier this week we had reported that following the Supreme Court's mandate the Bombay High Court had scheduled the next hearing of the Jiah Khan murder case for June 7. Now we hear that yesterday, the special women's court adjourned the hearing on actor's suicide case till June 10 in response to her mother Rabiya Khan's plea. Apparently, Rabiya had sought the adjournment stating that her petition demanding a probe by a special investigation team was pending before the Bombay High Court, which was likely to hear it on June 7. As per Rabiya Khan's petition with the Bombay High Court, she states that she is not satisfied with the Cbi probe. Further Rabiya stated that a probe conducted by the Sit is needed since the Cbi wrongly concurred with the finding of Mumbai police that it was a suicide, and not a homicidal death.

We all know that the recently released Marathi film Sairat has taken the box-office by storm. What many do not know is that the original copy of the film had got leaked on the internet two days before its release on April 29. That's why, Nagraj Manjule (Sairat's director- story writer- producer) went onto approach the Mumbai Police Commissioner to seek legal action in the matter. In the written complaint that he had submitted to Datta Padsalgikar (Mumbai's Police Commissioner) and Atulchandra Kulkarni (Joint Commissioner of Police-Crime), Nagraj Manjule had sought legal action against the accused involved in leaking the movie's original censor copy. Speaking about the complaint, Atulchandra Kulkarni said that they were investigating the matter and would also engage the cyber police to probe the case from all the angles to trace the culprits. Gopi R. Ghaware, a 25-year-old resident of the Wadala district of Mumbai, was chased down by onlookers after snatching the chain off of a woman. When police arrived, they took him to Rajawadi Hospital for an x-ray. The x-ray revealed that a metallic object was in Ghaware's stomach, and he finally admitted to the crime after an interrogation.

Salman was booked under the provisions of the Ipc, Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Bombay Prohibition Act, 1949 Mumbai Police also invoked section 304-ii of Ipc i.e culpable homicide not amounting to murder which attracts punishment of jail term of 10 years. This is the charge against which the actor had appealed. The court said today that on the basis of evidences produced by the prosecution, the appellant cannot be convicted, no matter how differently the common man thinks. Salman left in the middle of a film shooting at a Mumbai studio after he was asked by the court to be present.

The despair of loss weighs down Joshi in Sunrise. Joshi works as an agent in the social services of a Mumbai police station. He handles reports of lost and trafficked children, rarely able to effect any meaningful change. After fruitless days at work, he returns to his dark apartment and his heartbroken wife who cannot accept the loss of their grade school daughter. A strange shadow figure haunts Joshi, leading him night after night to a strange club called ‘Paradise’.

With very few words, so much is conveyed in Partho Sen-Gupta’s sophomore film. Character is built through environment and performance. The film’s early scenes capture a world of great detail, brimming with textures and sounds. Shot almost entirely at night, the sparseness of light and the heavy rains of the monsoons focus our attention and transform the city into a mythical labyrinth.
