Italy’s Rainbow Group — the company behind the hit “Winx Club” animation franchise — has optioned the rights to adapt mythological saga “Game of Gods,” which has drawn millions of young adult readers on user-generated fiction platform Wattpad.

The “Game of Gods” film adaptation will be produced by Rainbow and its Colorado Film live action unit, in tandem with Wattpad Webtoon Studios as associate producer.

Colorado previously adapted Wattpad title “The Tearsmith” into a young adult hit for Netflix.

Set on the Yale University campus, “Game of Gods” blends suspense, romance and Greek mythology in a contemporary retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone. The narrative involves a young female student named Haven who gets caught up in the Games of the Gods, “a mysterious ritual organized by the powerful and dangerous Lively brothers,” according to the synopsis.

Pan-European production and sales company Federation Studios (“The Bureau”) has teamed up with prominent Italian producer Alessandro Usai to launch a new film and TV shingle in Italy called No Name Entertainment.

Usai (pictured above), who is president of Italy’s motion picture association Anica, has over the past 15 years led the commercially successful Colorado Film Production which, among other hits, recently scored with young adult romantic drama “The Tearsmith.” Last year, it became the first Netflix Italy original to reach the No. 1 slot on the streamer’s global movie chart in the non-English-language category.

Joining Usai in the new Rome-based joint venture with Federation will be his long-time collaborator Pier Paolo Luciani, formerly COO of Colorado Film and, prior to that, head of production at Warner Bros. Italy. Luciani has been appointed No Name COO and partner.

Italy’s Rainbow Group, the company led by Iginio Straffi — creator of the hit “Winx Club” animation franchise — has announced a partnership with a group of Italian equity investors that are providing a roughly €90 million ($92 million) cash injection.

Under the deal, Tec Movie — which is part of a unit within top Italian merchant bank Mediobanca called the Equity Club — will hold a roughly 40% stake in Rainbow.

The deal “marks a strategic move for Rainbow to further consolidate its position as a leading Italian TV production and animation house with a view to future global growth,” according to a Rainbow statement.

Rainbow Group is now “looking to consolidate its international leadership and exploring strategic M&a transactions involving both major IP and companies in Italy and worldwide that share synergies with the group,” the statement added.

Anica, Italy’s national association of producers and distributors, has confirmed Alessandro Usai as its new president.

Usai takes over from Francesco Rutelli, who has led Anica for the last eight years. His appointment was confirmed this week at an assembly of the association, after the Anica general council put forward his nomination on September 26.

Usai has been CEO of Italy production company Colorado Film since 2010. Colorado, which was co-founded by director Gabriele Salvatores, has recent credits including hit Netflix movie The Tearsmith.

The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.

It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.

The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.

The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

Among streaming original movies, “Scoop” managed a solid break for Netflix while Amazon Prime Video’s “Road House” hung tough in its third full week in release, as reported by Luminate in its weekly Top 10 Streaming Originals charts for series and movies.

“Ripley,” the much talked-about adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic fraudster saga “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” from Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian, debuted with about 670.1 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. That translates to about 1.5 million views.

A sleeper entrant at No. 2 was Netflix’s unscripted crime docu “Files of the Unexplained,” with 531.3 million minutes watched across eight episodes. The show’s audience grew 276% in its first full week in release after premiering on April 3.

Currently, it’s $5.99 to rent and is #1 at iTunes (which ranks by transactions) as well as Fandango (which tracks by revenue).
