Thai version of Snatch
Zensha7 September 2023
The title pretty much says it all. "6ixtynin9" is a story about a woman who recently got laid off from her job and finds a mysterious parcel outside her door. This event triggers a ripple effect that affects the lives of many groups of people in the span of just 24 hours.

It's an eccentric and delightfully dark and offbeat series that exceeded my expectations, with the occasional well-known Thai humor that lightens the mood. While it ventures into the realm of being downright absurd at some parts, there isn't a moment that bores me.

You'll like it if you love quirky and dark films like "Snatch."

This woman's apartment is the center of the universe.
Tyler-A-Arse7 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting story, but I have no idea what genre it was trying to be. Action, crime, comedy, horror, and psychological warfare were all elements. Too many contrived things happen to cause her apartment to be the center of the story, though it was extremely hilarious.

I had a hard time grasping the protagonist's demeanour. She seemed like a nice girl that became desperate and got way over her head, or she was crazy to begin with and decided to go with the flow.

The ending causes me to take some stars away. You create all this drama, but you don't know how to conclude it. I guess it's just easier to not think through it and leave a bogus ending.

Really amateurish series or eccentric series?
Kukkahattuseta1 February 2024
When watching this series, one often wonders whether it is an exceptionally amateurish series or an eccentrically, good series. Just when you think you've found the answer, you have to change your mind again after a while. And Again and again.

The plot of the series is rather used. Nothing new there. It's more about the way it's done. Despite the initial faults, I ended up watching the whole series. Despite all its faults, it was entertaining. The series was also such that you could really expect anything from the next scene. This also made me want to keep watching.

The series had partly a weirdly good '80s synth soundscape. Unfortunately, this was not relied on enough, but was interspersed with traditional melodramatic piano thumping and strings. What a let down.

Series also featured the world's most picked door lock, the world's longest made tiny tattoo and the longest strangulation scene without death.

A flight that refuses to take off
ephsilonnot9 September 2023
The title of the review pretty much suggests how subpar and uninteresting it was to watch this series, especially because the trailer and plotline had grabbed my interest quite a bit.

Thriller-mystery genre is easy to nail because of the fast pace of story, easy and attention grabbing plotline; and the nail-biting, heart escalating curiosity to conclude and reach climax. But unfortunately the story did not have a single quality as mentioned. It will be an understatement to say the least, that I felt like giving up straight after the first episode because the pace was slow, storyline felt weak from get go and failed to hook our attention and create the need to root for any character. You can literally skip majority of the scene (maybe even episodes, considering there there are only 6) and have no effect to the flow or continuity of the story. That is exactly how much the script lacks.

Despite of this issue I continued though the suffering in hope that it will pick up the speed.

Neither I got to know about the motivation of characters behind any action, nor could the storyline build any connection with any character that we should be invested in. The mystery component remained predictable and pointless to the highest extent. The adult and gore content that was shown barely had anything to do with the plotline. So much so that as a viewer it is impossible to decide where to label this series in terms of genre. There was a supernatural element attached to the story which also seemed pointless. The only redeeming quality was probably the camera work and to some extent the acting of the main lead. Over all it was a snooze fest and felt like a task to reach the end rather than entertainment

Overall the series could do better as a 20 minute short movie with the amount of plotline it was able to show over the course of 6 episodes.

Its good its brilliant it has best dark humour
aman0109198611 September 2023
These kind of series are not easy to make. Cohen brothers did it and now this is the next mark. Slow but enjoyable. The silence says a lot. A story about a package delivered to a wrong address and then all the twist and turns leads to a big big confusion. And yes its has a comical touch of afterlife and hilarious one. Overall the lead actress did a pretty good job with limited words expressed everything with her body language. It also have a lot of nudity and gives a complete touch to a dark comedy. The shooutout scene and all over the time taken to show it is perfect. I completely loved this series.

Pointless. No lesson, nothing but senseless story. Even police had the planning but still failed with 2 suspects.are tha police that idiotic. Pee mak girl is just hot and pretty. And that is it. There is no dark comedy in it. Didnt even use the money. All was just just a waste of time and money and effort of this Girl. Waste of a time if you would watch this. Netflix should remove this immediately. Just put peemak would be better.

Just finished Ep4. This Series is brilliant.
jtan-121796 September 2023
Just came out of netflix today out of the blue and i just watch the first 30 minutes if its any good and boy this Series from thailand is just crazy. I will binge watch it because it only has 6 episodes. Just like in the description of the series that her life goes upside down when she receives a package in her front door after getting laid off from her job. Every episode so far im like how is she gonna get out of this mess. Whoever wrote this script and directed should be applauded for the story, plot, great acting and something new to offer. This is the first film from thailand that i really really like. Usually movies from Thailand that comes out are ghost, romantic type stuff but this series blows my mind away. Im the first one to review this series and i havent even finished yet and i think the last 2 episodes will be a cliff hanger.

Very bad movie!
nyanminhtut-0331530 September 2023
All the actors and actresses were acting good but it doesn't make sense that none heard the gun shot as there were a lot of bikers down the apartment playing chess?

Even the landlord or whoever came along with policemen to actress room, he didn't even know that it is not right from Ms. Toom to 6 Misters in the room in studio type room? A lot of things that are missing by director.

Deaf suddenly could listen to rap? While he needed gesture translation from his friend?

I am not sure how the actress could carry all dead bodies to the pick up truck? As she was hercules?

Trying to be creative and think out of box but too many mistakes. So, 1 star from me and not recommended.

Wow! Fantastic! Funny!
tarajil4118 September 2023
This series portrays Thai culture to the max! There is bribery with bags of money. There is an insurance company where the employees wear orange jackets. During the pandemic, in Thailand insurance companies almost went broke with all the Covid insurance payments they had to make. One did go bankrupt. The government had to force them to make payments. In the series they mention the saying "juh jai jop." It doesn't translate as funny in English "get Covid, insurance pays, end." All this from real life was used in the series, although it doesn't translate well. However in the Thai language it is hilarious. TH Dave Chaichanbutr as Sonny is great! He is in the police force in real life. He's not an actor! All the actors did an excellent job. The series had subtle humor and reflected the many quirks of Thai life, from people playing chess all day in a parking garage, to the different groups wearing different color uniforms, to the giggling girls who turn nasty - but it's so funny! Of course, meanwhile, protests are going on. Director Pen-Ek Ratanaruan did a magnificent job, especially since this is a remake of his old movie. He made it into so much more. It's great!

Superficial and senseless
suryasays13 November 2023
The pretty lead girl loses her job in the first episode, lives in an apt whose number is 6 which turns to 9 every time she closes the door, gets a box of money wrongly delivered, decides to keep it, protect it at any cost. People trying to discover their lost money begin to disappear, they try to theorise that they are being conned by same guy, who he is supposed to be receiving the money in first place. In this mayhem, our protagonist is trying to hide bodies that are piling up in her apartment in broad daylight and hold onto the money while sleepwalking through her character portrayal.

I have never watched a Thai series before and this series shouldn't have been the one to kickoff. It is like bunch of writers got together pinning for a Netflix series green signal and went after a checklist of things to please the producers - pretty girl, check; nudity, check; mindless murders, check; unmindful sex scenes, check; drugs, check; local flavoured gangs, check. They also added clueless cops, substandard storyline, shallow performances, unrealistic settings and an afterlife-status-decider to add to the variety. What you get in the end is a hotchpotch of a series with murders happening , bodies piling up and the lead girl who hardly weighs 100 pounds moving them around with little conviction and a single expression. If all this doesn't give the viewer a brain freeze, the ending will surely will, with even more bodies getting piled up for a totally lost cause.

A darkly comic drama from Thailand
Tweekums21 September 2023
As this Thai drama begins the manager at an insurance company is telling employees that due to economic problems twelve of them are being made redundant. One of those let go is a woman named Toom, she returns home to apartment 6. The number is relevant as the number on her door has become loose and often drops down and appears to be '9'. Elsewhere a Muay Thai competition is taking place and one of the bouts is thrown. Obviously money is changing hands and a bag containing one million baht is to be sent to apartment 9. It is accidentally left outside Toom's flat. Her life is about to get very complicated as inevitably the crooks want it back.

I thought this series was a lot of fun, and not at all what I was expecting. The drama is enjoyable and provides plenty of dark comedy as the body count rises. The characters are a lot of fun; the villains have a pantomime quality so even when they do some fairly unpleasant things it doesn't get too disturbing. There is also a good level of comedy; including fairly surreal scenes as the recently deceased arrive to be processed in the afterlife. I didn't expect any sex or nudity but there is quite a bit of both and it is a bit gratuitous. The cast is solid, especially Davika Hoorne who is great as protagonist Toom. Overall I'd recommend this to people looking for something a little different.

These comments are based on watching the series in Thai with English subtitles.

Warning: Spoilers
Wasting my time, may I know how a dead person can come back to life? The main character can act but the script is just awful, I will be a better film if you stick to the genre. Stop with nonesense that the dead person can be bring back to life.

Less then three minutes in and it's already painfully obvious this is yet another entry in the minimum-effort, disposable TV show category.

It's dull, it's derivative, it's forgettable and somehow even worse than all of the previous attempts to get a spy franchise going from Netflix (please don't let this get a sequel). Every CGI action set piece is bad, lacking any weight and is only laughable opposed to thrilling.

Dark humour as art
anxiousgayhorseonketamine16 November 2023
This is so brilliant it simply oozes cool from every single pore

The way the story unfolds the way actors move the scenes in heaven all of it is sheer brilliance I am now watching the 1999 film Ruang talok 69 (1999)it was based on

that too is pretty much the same but they updated it and wrote into it all the current dissent between the establishment and the youth very cunningly as almost any protest in Thailand is seen as a crime by mentioning by showing TV footage of the Hong Kong situation between the Chinese state and the students there.

So hardly any mention of the current chasm between the 20-year-olds and the geriatrics and Royal Court with its antiquated rules whereby criticising the king on Facebook can land you in prison for life and other ludicrous legislation which belongs to the Middle Ages.

The main actress Davika Hoorne here is absolutely excellent most of the other main players are also extremely good some of the scenes you're seeing there are so original to Western viewers That they will make your head spin.

  • I've become instantly a fan.

Highly highly recommended. This is dark Humour at its best with the accent on humour.

PS and the soundtrack and use of incidental scores is corking all the way through.

They hit a homerun with this one.
kmhlbeavis24 September 2023
The Thais did it again. The description for this is accurate. It's a comedy, action and crime all rolled into one. A lady gets laid off from the company she works for and then opens her door to find a box with money in it. First 2 people that tried to retrieve it wound up dead and then the conga line of dead people continues as they not only try to get the money back but kill her also and they all fail. The ending wound up with a complete bloodbath. If there is a 2nd season to this series please release it quickly. I am still waiting for season 3 of girl from nowhere another Thai hit. I hope that either that was the ending or if they are going to continue not to wait to long. The lead actress is cute also. I am will be waiting to see what they do with this.

Thai Tarantino
jimparkercoogee20 January 2024
This six-part Thai series is a highly styilised and super-hip crime caper reminiscent of Tarantino. Apparently a remake by the director of his original 1999 movie, '6ixtynin9: The Series' focuses on a young woman, Toom, made redundant from her insurance job during the pandemic. On arriving home to her apartment, she finds a box on her front doorstep. She's used to misdelivered items. Her apartment is number 6, but the number on the door keeps swivelling around to look like 9. That's three doors down the hallway and, unbeknown to our heroine, the home of a drug dealer and his gang. Curious, Toom brings the box inside and opens it. Of course, it's full of tends of thousands of dollars in cash. Jobless and desperate, she opts to keep the money. And it's from this point that the plot kicks off.

As with Tarantino, there is full of dark humour, with lots of gunplay, gruesome violence and racy sex scenes. As the bodies pile up in Toom's apartment (with various crime factions all trying to recover the cash), it gets more and more fanciful. And when two of the victims come back to life, thanks to a last minute reprieve from the old hip Thai angel at the gates of the after-life, the story completely dispenses with any pretence at realism. But it's all so tautly directed and moves at such a pace that the best approach is a viewer is just to enjoy it and hang on for the ride.

Highly recommended.
