- When evil tech genius Christopher Pelant returns to toy with the Jeffersonian team in their newest investigation, they discover that the string of murders that have been occurring are tied to FBI agents close to Booth. Meanwhile, as the investigation unfolds, Sweets realizes that the evidence seems all too familiar to him and Brennan starts evaluating her relationship with Booth when signs begin to point to him as a potential target of Pelant's.—Fox Publicity
- While the Jeffersonian team works out the presumably somehow significant similarities in corpses of FBI men known to Booth, the trademark of serial killer Pellant, Sweets soon realizes the monster is using the theories from his own criminal psychology papers. The masterly manipulation extends to fatally frustrated people, who lost loved-ones in a police siege, turned into his henchman, but also targets the team members, even Booth and Bones' intention to get wed, but also tricking them concerning the crucial murder target.—KGF Vissers
- After a mysterious murder, Booth visits the crime scene and interviews a young lady who witnessed a man fleeing the scene. A fellow agent finds a ski hat in the trash. Not much to go on -- until Booth receives a call on his cell. It's Pelant, who taunts the FBI guy. Turns out Pelant is monitoring the scene via various hidden cameras. "You crossed a line when you shot me," the psychopath warns. Retorts Booth: "You think this is a game?" Responds Pelant: "Of course. And now the rules have changed." Uh oh.
Back at the lab, Camille, Angela, and Bones examine the dead body, which is riddled with bullet holes. Angela suggests that Booth remove himself from the case as Pelant is targeting FBI agents, but Bones doesn't want to hear it. Bones then examines the victim's leg and the bone shows signs of 10-year-old dog bites, very similar to a previous victim. Turns out all the agents were part of a hush-hush assault on a cult compound guarded by dogs. Booth was also on that team. But why does Pelant care? Sweets suggests that he is working through a surrogate as a number of children saw their parents killed in the raid on the compound. "Pelant's using my work against us," Sweets concludes.
Back at the lab, Hodgins tells Angela that he should have killed Pelant when he had the chance. "These men, the victims, they're my fault," Hodgins says. Bones and Booth, meanwhile, argue. Bones is furious because Booth did not reveal that he was one of the FBI agents who raided the compound -- agents that are now apparently being targeted. "You are not allowed to die," Bones says. Sweets then begins investigating potential surrogates and identifies a man whose parents were killed in the compound raid and who blogs about the FBI. The man lives in an area where particulates on the ski hat are found.
Booth poses as a member of a road crew and stops the young man's truck. A SWAT team emerges from the nearby trucks. The young man, whose tattoo matches one identified by a crime scene witness, tries to turn his shotgun on himself. Booth stops the suicide and then brings the young man, Zane, in for questioning. "Pelant is using you," Booth says. "You're better than that." Says Zane: "I only wish I was the guy he used to pull the trigger." So it wasn't Zane.
Booth then gets a call from Bones, who gives her partner a bag of beef jerky .... because it's something he loves. She then begins to tear up. "Will you marry me, Booth?" she asks. "All this just made me see things more clearly. I love you. I want you to be my husband." Booth says yes. They kiss. And, unbeknownst to either, Pelant is watching via hidden camera. We see Pelant recording and dubbing Booth's voice. Ominous at best. Later, Bones discovers that both victims were shot 11 times. "So what ties the FBI, Crystal Creek (the compound) and the number 11 together?" Angela asks. Good question.
The team then rethinks their theory. Instead of the child of a cult member being the surrogate, could it be a child of one of the FBI agents who was killed? Sure enough, Angela finds an agent who was killed in the raid after being shot 11 times. He had a daughter, Anna, who he trained to be an expert marksman. It all seems to fit. We then see Anna watching a video of her father who is giving her instructions to kill. Of course, the video is actually Pelant who has overlaid the face of the dead man over his own. Anna calls Booth. It turns out she is the witness from the murder scene. Booth will not suspect the young lady at all.
A short time later, Bones can't reach Booth on the phone .... because he's gone to interview the witness. The FBI quickly puts two-and-two together and storms Anna's apartment looking for clues. They find the creepy video from Anna's dead father. "Pelant is sending these videos to her," Camille says. They then begin to decrypt the file and a code appears. It reads: "Booth decoy target Sweets." And where is Sweets? Stuck in a traffic jam of Pelant's creation. Angela frantically searches the traffic for Sweet's car. They find it. "I'm close," Booth says. "I can get there." Bones races out of the lab, too.
Booth runs through the streets, weaving in and out of idling cars. At the same moment, Anna spots Sweets and pulls her gun. Booth fires and Anna goes down with a wound to the shoulder. Booth and Bones then find each other in the street and embrace. Later, Pelant makes a final call to Booth. "You can never marry her," Pelant says. "If you ignore me you will be responsible for the death of five innocent people." Booth pretends the call is from his mother to protect Bones. "I will kill you," he whispers to Pelant before hanging up.
So the wedding will have to wait, and Bones can't know why. In a heartbreaking scene, Booth tells Bones that he can't marry her. Bones begins to cry. She is hurt and confused by Booth's sudden turnaround.
