The Holdovers star Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas have officially been cast in A24's upcoming Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony.

Per Variety, Sessa will portray the legendary chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain in Tony, a new A24 biopic from Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson. Joining Sessa in the film is Banderas, who is fresh off the success of Babygirl and Paddington in Peru. Banderas' role in Tony is being kept under wraps. Per the official logline, Tony will "take place in 1976 when a young Bourdain has a life-changing experience working and living in Provincetown, Mass." Todd Bartels and Lou Howe penned the script for the film. The film is set to begin filming in May. There is no official release date for Tony.

Anthony Bourdain was a world-renowned chef and television personality who rose to prominence due in large part to his bestselling memoir, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.

The Prince Harry-produced docuseries “Polo” hopes to be “the behind-the-scenes, kind of like what ‘Drive to Survive’ did for Formula 1,” professional polo player Nacho Figueras told People while speaking at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Saturday. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens … Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a, hopefully, longer series that will expose our sport to millions of people,” he added.

Figueras added that “it’s an honor” working with Harry, who he described as “a dear friend.” The player continued, “This is more his project than it is mine. It’s an honor to know that I was able to help. And the show is not about me. It’s not about him … So we’ve been working very hard on it and we’re very excited about the outcome.”

Like his father and brother, Harry has played polo for decades.

Dominic Sessa, who rose to fame with his breakout role in the Oscar-winning dramedy The Holdovers, is set to take on the role of the late chef Anthony Bourdain in the upcoming biopic Tony. The film is being produced by the Oscar-nominated production company Star Thrower Entertainment, known for its work on King Richard.

According to reports from Deadline, A24 is currently in negotiations to acquire the film package. The biopic, Tony, will be directed by Matt Johnson, with a script penned by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels. Producers Tim and Trevor White, along with Matt Miller, are leading the project, while Emily Rose is set to executive produce. Star Thrower Entertainment has a successful history with biopics, having produced King Richard, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and earned Will Smith an Academy Award for Best Lead Actor. The company recently completed production on the A24 film Eternity.

He hosted several popular shows that explored culture and cuisine around the world, including Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown on CNN. Sadly, he committed suicide in 2018.

Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) has launched a new free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channel that offers documentaries and docuseries from its cable news brand CNN.

The channel, called CNN Originals, debuted this week on Plex and Amazon platforms Prime Video, Fire TV and Freevee. A CNN spokesperson said additional platforms will offer CNN Originals over the next few days, but didn’t reveal which Fast platforms will distribute it.

CNN Originals first debuted as an audio-only channel on SiriusXM satellite and streaming radio. It is the third Fast channel to be offered by the cable network, which also operates CNN Headlines in the United States and CNN Fast in other markets.

The late Treat Williams received a posthumous nomination for best supporting actor at the 2024 Emmys for his role in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

Williams died after a motorcycle accident on June 12, 2023. He was 71 years old. His Emmy nomination for a limited or anthology series comes after the final curtain call for his role as CBS head Bill Paley in the second season of Feud.

At the time of this death, 20th Century TV and FX said in a statement: “Treat Williams leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances in film and television, and an indelible mark on the entire industry. All who were fortunate enough to work with Treat over his four-decade career would agree that his incredible talent was matched only by his utter kindness. He was a friend and inspiration to many, and he will be deeply missed by his colleagues. Our hearts go out to his family during this time.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry first signed a deal with Netflix back in 2020, but since then, the couple's media market value has declined a bit.

Their first two projects with the streaming giant met with mixed results, but according to a new announcement, two more series from the couple's Archewell production studio are currently in development.

News of the new shows was first reported by Deadline.

One of the projects is a food-focused lifestyle series that will "celebrate the joys of cooking and gardening, entertaining and friendship."

The show will be directed by Michael Steed, who's best known for his work on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Deadline can reveal that the pair have two non-fiction projects in production at the streamer. They form part of the overall deal that she and her husband, Harry, The Duke of Sussex, signed with the company in 2020 via their Archewell Productions banner.

Max is now officially in the news streaming business. Warner Bros. Discovery has launched its new CNN Max content hub on Max, meaning subscribers of the Max with Ads, Max Ad-Free and Ultimate Max Ad-Free plans all get live news, breaking updates, and much more. Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.

“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. Perrette said. “CNN Max is differentiated by having 24/7 news at its core from CNN, the leading global news organization, and being available on a scaled streaming service in the U.S., which has a significantly younger and additive audience compared to traditional TV.

CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.

Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. Other shows come from CNN International, including State of the Race with Kasie Hunt, which is debuting on Wednesday as well, and One World, with Bianna Golodryga joining Zain Asher as anchor. Amanpour also is part of the early afternoon schedule.

The CNN hub also features original programming, including Jim Sciutto anchor CNN Newsroom, with Rahel Solomon, Jim Acosta, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield also set to lead coverage during certain dayparts.

Ray Liotta’s performances live on, as the late actor received a posthumous 2023 Emmy nomination for his role in Apple TV+’s Black Bird drama.

Liotta, best known for his turn as hustler-turned-mob rat Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, died on May 26, 2022. He was 67 years old at the time.

It's so wide it's actually outnumbering everything else on Max.

If you care more about prestige television than its easy-viewing counterparts, you may feel inclined to outright ignore this massive influx of content. But we encourage you to not be so hasty. This year’s crop of films at Sundance is set to entertain in more ways than one, with a lineup of 99 features whose storylines were honed through meticulous collaboration between director and editor. Here are six editors you should know about whose pioneering work is galvanizing audiences and gracing screens.

Alisa Lepselter, Editor: “You Hurt My Feelings” (Premieres)

A witty comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a novelist trying to find success with her sophomore book, “You Hurt My Feelings” reunites Alisa Lepselter with writer-director Nicole Holofcener, whose directorial debut, “Walking and Talking”, was also Lepselter’s first feature editing credit. An accomplished editor with nearly four decades of experience, Lepselter began as assistant editor, working on films like Martin Scorsese’s Edith Wharton adaptation “The Age of Innocence,” before becoming Woody Allen...

CNN’s senior vice president of original series program development, Jon Adler, is exiting the cable news network by the end of the year. The news comes after the media company announced it would be pulling back on original series and documentary content commissioned by outside partners.

Adler, who has been with CNN for a decade, helped launch the CNN’s original programming slate, having worked across 30 series like “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and “United Shades of America.” He was promoted to this role in March, ahead of the debut and eventual discontinuation of CNN+.

Barbara Starr, the longtime Pentagon correspondent for CNN, is departing the network.

She wrote in a memo to staffers, “To my many colleagues and friends, With the expiration of my contract in the coming days I have made the decision to move on. Let me say this…you never say goodbye to your friends, so I won’t.” CNN’s Oliver Darcy first reported on her exit, and the network confirmed it.

Starr joined CNN in 2001, having joined from ABC News where she worked as a producer.

Her exit follows the layoff of hundreds of employees last week, including veteran correspondent Martin Savage and political analyst Chris Cillizza. Another on-air figure, Ana Cabrera, also is looking to leave the network when her contract expires, according to sources.

Rick Lewchuk is exiting his post as senior vice president of creative marketing and brand standards for CNN Worldwide, amid cost-cutting and layoffs at the network this week.

He oversaw on-air and off-channel brand and marketing for the CNN channels, as well as CNN Go and CNN Digital and the short-lived CNN+, with responsibilities that included brand messaging, on-air promotion, design and marketing campaigns across platforms. He also served as interim head of marketing after the departure of Allison Gollust in February.

Lewchuk joined CNN in 2012 after holding a number of senior level positions at CTV, a division of Bell Media in Canada. That included a tenure as senior vice president of Bell Media Agency and Brand Strategy.

Friday was a “sad day for the documentary film world,” one filmmaker told IndieWire after hearing the news that CNN Films will scale back on original documentaries from outside partners. The strategy shift means more than losing a major buyer; for filmmakers it means the great documentary gold rush had a good run, but it’s now over.

CNN is far from the only platform to tighten its nonfiction belt; cost cutting measures have also come for Netflix, Amazon, and Peacock. However, CNN was one of the last bastions for hardcore, capital-d documentaries that aspired to more than true crime or “Tiger King.”

As cost-cutting changes continue to roil CNN, chairman and CEO Chris Licht has announced that the news division will be cutting back on commissioning films and television series from outside firms.

“I am writing to share that we are making changes to how we approach premium longform content,” Licht wrote in a memo Friday morning to CNN employees that was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Our long-term plan will no longer rely on commissioned projects with outside partners.” Licht explained that the decision was “based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content” but qualified that “longform content remains an important pillar of our programming.”

The belt-tightening of CNN has begun. The broadcast news channel is set to cut back on commissioning documentary films and television series from its programming, chairman Chris Licht announced to employees on Friday.

In an email to staff obtained by IndieWire, Licht explained that the decision was made due to budgetary reasons and the cost of commissioning projects with outside partners. Going forward, long-form documentary content for the channel will now be produced almost entirely in-house — and instead, Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content development, will explore creating a studio focused on long-form content.

Another former CNN+ series has found a new home.

CNN will debut the new original series (More Than) A Cooking Show with Alison Roman this fall, the channel says. The series will see Roman traveling around New York and Italy, learning about some of her favorite ingredients and, yes, sharing ways to cook them.

Roman, a chef and cookbook author, has worked at Bon Appétit and The New York Times, but she also forged a brand through her social media and YouTube channels. CNN announced her CNN+ pickup ahead of the streaming service’s launch. It is not immediately clear what day or time Roman’s show will air on CNN, though the channel has made an effort to reimagine its Sunday lineup, which could make for a potential landing spot.

The sixth season of Paramount+ original series “Seal Team” has a new official trailer ahead of its September 18 premiere. Produced by CBS Studios, the series will debut episodes of its ten-episode season weekly on Sundays on Paramount+.

The show stars David Boreanaz, Max Thieriot, Neil Brown, Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks and Raffi Barsoumian. The military drama follows the professional and personal lives of an elite unit of Navy SEALs, who are often deployed on missions worldwide at a moment’s notice.

The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.

The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.

Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced Thursday that it will combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single, unified streaming service, which will launch in Summer 2023. A name for the combined service, along with pricing, will be announced at a later date — though the service will offer both ad-lite and ad-free tiers.

Warner Bros. Discovery ultimately plans to launch a unified streaming service, one that will carry the full breadth and depth of content from the likes of HBO, Warner Bros. and Discovery Inc.

For now, though, the company’s existing streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+ will remain their own products, and on Thursday the company took its first step in using its larger content library to beef up those two offerings.

For starters, the company said that “select” programming from Magnolia Network, the joint venture between Discovery and Chip and Joanna Gaines, would launch on HBO Max in September. That will include a new series, Fixer Upper: The Castle, which sees the hosts fixing up their own home.

The programming shift is the first time that legacy Discovery programming will be added to HBO Max. The content will continue to be available on Discovery+.
