The streaming world is slowly but surely just becoming an equally expensive (and complicated) endeavor as cable plans. Despite being propped up as the future of content consumption, it's hard to imagine a more full-circle moment than this one. A number of streaming services have been raising prices as of late as companies realize what Netflix figured out long ago — chasing subscribers by means necessary is not profitable. Discovery+ is no exception, a reality-focused platform that houses a number of fan-favorite programs as well as original documentaries.
To bring in the new year, Discovery+ will be raising its monthly subscription fees by a dollar. The streamer now costs $5.99 for the ad-supported plan and $9.99 for the ad-free plan. While the price change will be implemented immediately for new subscribers, current customers will get a 30-day notice. The Prince Harry-produced docuseries “Polo” hopes to be “the behind-the-scenes, kind of like what ‘Drive to Survive’ did for Formula 1,” professional polo player Nacho Figueras told People while speaking at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Saturday. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens … Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a, hopefully, longer series that will expose our sport to millions of people,” he added.
Figueras added that “it’s an honor” working with Harry, who he described as “a dear friend.” The player continued, “This is more his project than it is mine. It’s an honor to know that I was able to help. And the show is not about me. It’s not about him … So we’ve been working very hard on it and we’re very excited about the outcome.”
Like his father and brother, Harry has played polo for decades.

The reason we love The Apprentice is because we secretly (or not so secretly) think they’re mostly idiots and we could do better. We’d probably all win Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Jeopardy in our heads. Certainly the Made In Chelsea gang would embrace us, and we could do with a flirty Gordon Ramsey to come and sort out our business, or someone to do up the house or the garden or the car, and storage hunters looks fun… But not that many of us could actually be arsed to apply.

This year, the Emmy nominees for outstanding hosted nonfiction series include Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021 and 2022’s winner) and Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi. It’s fair to say these food travelogues owe their entrée into awards contention to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, which dominated the category in the 2010s and brought credibility to food programming in a field that had previously overlooked it.
CNN’s Parts Unknown, which won 12 Primetime Emmys over 12 seasons — including six for outstanding informational series (as the category was known from 2013 to 2019) — was Bourdain’s fourth series following A Cook’s Tour and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel, and Food Network’s The Layover. All were travel shows presented through the prism of food, but in Parts Unknown, Bourdain — an executive chef at New York’s Brasserie Les Halles who rose to fame for his tell-all memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in...

Max has had some time to settle in for streaming audiences, and while the initial rollout wasn't flawless, it's still a decent start for the controversial rebrand. Following this rebrand, a plethora of additional content has been added to the service — along with removing plenty of other content, but that's neither here nor there. Most notably, a wide swath of Discovery brand content, from TLC dating shows to endless competitions from Food Network, is now available to watch on Max. It's so wide it's actually outnumbering everything else on Max.
If you care more about prestige television than its easy-viewing counterparts, you may feel inclined to outright ignore this massive influx of content. But we encourage you to not be so hasty. Underneath the piles of generic house-flipping shows and survival competitions are some interesting shows from Discovery's past and present worth looking at. The series: "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown"
Where you can stream it: Discovery+, HBO Max (season 1)
The pitch: Celebrity chef, writer, and travel journalist Anthony Bourdain brings his unique brand of genuine empathy and self-aware snark to every corner of the globe as he travels to the "parts unknown." The CNN series follows Bourdain as he travels to various places around the world, connecting to the people who live there through conversation, and more importantly, through food. Food is a huge part of culture, and though Bourdain's previous travel series, "No Reservations," focused almost entirely on global food customs, "Parts Unknown" uses food as the starting point for much larger conversations. Bourdain is an expert at making people comfortable and earning their trust, in large part because of his earnestness. He has discussions with everyone ranging from the poorest and most disenfranchised to heads of state. The best part is that...

Friday was a “sad day for the documentary film world,” one filmmaker told IndieWire after hearing the news that CNN Films will scale back on original documentaries from outside partners. The strategy shift means more than losing a major buyer; for filmmakers it means the great documentary gold rush had a good run, but it’s now over.
CNN is far from the only platform to tighten its nonfiction belt; cost cutting measures have also come for Netflix, Amazon, and Peacock. However, CNN was one of the last bastions for hardcore, capital-d documentaries that aspired to more than true crime or “Tiger King.”
“What’s happening across the documentary universe that’s troubling is we’re seeing more of the prestige outlets that have been traditionally for filmmakers to speak their truth and speak their story, they’re starting to dwindle,” said one talent representative within the documentary world, who...

The belt-tightening of CNN has begun. The broadcast news channel is set to cut back on commissioning documentary films and television series from its programming, chairman Chris Licht announced to employees on Friday.

Roman, a chef and cookbook author, has worked at Bon Appétit and The New York Times, but she also forged a brand through her social media and YouTube channels. CNN announced her CNN+ pickup ahead of the streaming service’s launch. It is not immediately clear what day or time Roman’s show will air on CNN, though the channel has made an effort to reimagine its Sunday lineup, which could make for a potential landing spot.

CNN will debut the new original series (More Than) A Cooking Show with Alison Roman this fall, the channel says. The series will see Roman traveling around New York and Italy, learning about some of her favorite ingredients and, yes, sharing ways to cook them.

The CNN Originals hub debuted on Discovery+ on Friday, as the new home for the news channel’s streaming library following the abrupt closure of CNN+.
The hub was announced earlier this month, and features over 800 episodes of content from CNN Original Series, CNN Films, and Hln Original Series. Additional content will be added after their linear run on the CNN cable networks.
Some of the original content that appeared on CNN+ has popped up elsewhere. The documentary The Last Movie Stars, about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, debuted this summer on HBO Max. Chris Wallace’s talk show, one of the marquee offerings, will return in September on CNN on Sunday nights and on HBO Max.
Among the original library titles offered on the new hub are 1968: The Year That Changed America, American Dynasties: The Kennedys, American Style, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (Seasons 1-12), The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power,...

Starting today, Discovery+ subscribers will have access to many of CNN’s most popular evergreen television series, including popular food shows “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and documentaries like “The History of Comedy” and “Diana.” The series can be found under a new CNN Originals hub on Discovery+, the latest addition to the popular documentary-heavy streaming service.
Since WarnerMedia and Discovery merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year, CEO David Zaslav has made the consolidation of the conglomerate’s streaming services a top priority. One of his first moves was to scrap CNN+, a streaming service that the company had invested over 100 million into, just a month after it launched. Warner Bros. Discovery ultimately plans to launch a unified streaming service, one that will carry the full breadth and depth of content from the likes of HBO, Warner Bros. and Discovery Inc.
For now, though, the company’s existing streaming services HBO Max and Discovery+ will remain their own products, and on Thursday the company took its first step in using its larger content library to beef up those two offerings.
For starters, the company said that “select” programming from Magnolia Network, the joint venture between Discovery and Chip and Joanna Gaines, would launch on HBO Max in September. That will include a new series, Fixer Upper: The Castle, which sees the hosts fixing up their own home.
The programming shift is the first time that legacy Discovery programming will be added to HBO Max. The content will continue to be available on Discovery+.
