- In a metropolitan city of contemporary America, the stepmother of the Holland family Bethany, and the uncle of the Lyons family Richard band together to steal an AI invention from Bethany's husband, a genius scientist. The two murder Bethany's husband and orchestrate a car crash that sends Richard's nephew Wayne Lyons into a coma, clearing Richard's way to take over the Lyons Enterprise. This mutually beneficial plan is undermined when the stepdaughter of Bethany, Ellie Holland, marries the now-awaken Wayne Lyons. The unlikely couple teams together to investigate the crime by Bethany and Richard and justice and romance ensue.
- Ellie Holland stands at her bedroom window, staring out into the yard. Her stepmother, Bethany, walks in and asks Ellie if she is ready to go. Ellie tells Bethany she doesn't think she can go through with it; marry Wayne Lyons and produce an heir, a man who has been in a coma for six months. Bethany reveals that it's the only way that Ellie can save her father's life. The company he founded has been losing money. Her half-sister, Sascha, walks in and asks if Ellie has cold feet. Looking at the photo on her dresser, Ellie thinks to herself that she can't believe she will be marrying her boyfriend, Roger's cousin. Sascha tells Ellie that as she is their father's favourite, saving him should be her responsibility. Reluctantly, Ellie agrees to go through with the wedding.
Standing by Wayne's bedside, Ellie contemplates him, her husband. She becomes aware of noises, and realises that it's her sister and boyfriend. She overhears the couple scheming. Once Ellie has given birth to the Lyon's heir, and his cousin has died, he plans to marry Ellie, take control of the Lyon's Corporation. Once he has control, he says he will divorce Ellie, and marry Sascha.
Ellie returns to Wayne's side, where she is joined by Roger. He puts his arms around Ellie and tells her he will raise his cousin's son as his own. Ellie turns on him and slaps him, confronting him with the truth she now knows. They struggle and Ellie falls back onto the bed beside Wayne. She tells Roger it's over, but to his surprise, the comatose man awakens.
Barbara Lyons, Wayne's mother is overjoyed to see him awake. The doctor informs them that they will be running tests to ensure Wayne is ok. He sees Ellie standing in the corner, and asks his mother who she is. Barbara explains that she organised the wedding to ensure the continuation of the Lyon's family, paying $5 million dollars to the Holland family. Wayne reacts badly, thanking her for whoring him out to a stranger. Barbara faints dead away, causing both Ellie and Wayne to worry about her.
Later, Ellie comes back into Wayne's room. He asks after Barbara and Ellie explains that she is resting. She tells Wayne that she doesn't really want to be in the marriage any more than he does, but that her father is unwell and she needed the money. Wayne thinks to himself that he needs to solve the mystery of the car accident that put him in a coma, and that Ellie's presence might be beneficial. Ellie claims to be tired and opens her suitcase. Wayne asks why she is changing in his room, telling her to find another room. Ellie, affronted, tells him she will.
The next morning, Ellie is awoken by her phone. Her best friend and co-worker, Sophie, is calling because Ellie has slept in and is late for work. Their boss, Amanda, is livid with Ellie. She rushes into the kitchen, grabs a banana and tells Wayne she is going to work. Not realising she has left, he tells her that he wants to discuss their arrangement, as he has a proposal.
At work, Amanda threatens to fire Ellie if she is late again. She is clearly agitated, because of the news that Wayne has woken from his coma. She shows Ellie a new report, that claims the Lyon's family refuses to comment. Of course, Ellie knows that Wayne is awake, so feigns surprise. Amanda orders Ellie to get a story out of the news. Sophie, aware that Ellie has married Wayne, tells Ellie that she should ask Wayne for an interview. Ellie says she doesn't even know him. Just then, Wayne texts Ellie, asking her to meet him at a restaurant for dinner after work. When she arrives, they talk, and Wayne reveals that he looked into her and they banter for a little before he presents her with a 6 carat diamond ring. He claims it is a prop, to lend credibility to the story of their marriage. Ellie tells Wayne that she can't accept the ring. He proposes they remain married for at least a year, as he had just woken and didn't want to deal with the drama with his mother. He offers her a hefty severance payment. Ellie asks about the baby she was supposed to provide, and Wayne tells her to forget about the baby. He tells her that he is worried about his family, that he's not convinced that the car crash was an accident. He suspects someone tried to harm him intentionally. He presses Ellie for an answer to his proposal. She picks up the ring, places it on her finger, and accepts his terms.
Back at the Lyon estate, Ellie photographs her rock and sends pictures to Sophie, who is in raptures over the ring. Bethany calls her to inform Ellie that her father is dying. She rushes to the hospital. Bethany informs her that she doesn't have much time left, and that he has been waiting for her. She begs him to fight, but he pulls a usb drive from inside his watch band and presses it into her hand. He tells her it contains his life's work, the prototype for an AI he created and begs her not to trust anyone with the information. He tells Ellie that he believes in her, and loves her, before he slips away. Ellies distraught cries summon Bethany and Sascha.
Ellie confronts her stepmother, asking Bethany why she married Wayne Lyons for $5 million dollars but her father still passed. She accuses Bethany of keeping the money for herself. Bethany reacts by slapping her step-daughter, screaming at her that after Aaron's funeral, she wants nothing further to do with Ellie.
At the funeral, Ellie stands alone, clearly distressed over what has happened. Sascha approaches her and reminds her that after the funeral, Ellie is to gather her things and leave. Ellie claims that the house is hers as well, but Sascha mocks her, telling her she is unwanted. Not even her husband wants her, as he is nowhere to be found. Just then, Wayne arrives, in a wheelchair pushed by his assistant, Joey. It's clear to Wayne that Ellie's family is just as dangerous as his own. Ellie claims that he hasn't even met the worst one. Bethany approaches them, and Wayne coldly tells her that he was looking forward to meeting the cold-hearted woman that listed her dead husband's house on the day of his funeral. Ellie screams at her that she can't sell the house. Bethany scoffs, telling Ellie that if she has money, she can have the house. At a gesture from Wayne, Joey steps forward and presents Bethany with a case containing $1 million. Wayne informs her that he will buy the house, and that neither Bethany or Sascha are welcome there.
Later, Ellie offers to pay Wayne back somehow. He tells her not to worry, but if she really wants to help him, she could try massaging his legs. She kneels in front of him and starts to massage. Wayne reacts to her touch, much to Ellie's surprise, claiming she didn't realise that he had any sensation below the waist. He tells her to massage a bit higher and he'll show her how able he is. Shocked, Ellie recoils and tells him to stop thinking dirty things. However, when she tries to stand, her hair catches in his chair. As he tries to free her, Barbara walks in. Ellie quickly tries to explain that it wasn't what it looked like. Barbara asks if they were making her a grandbaby. Wayne asks why she come, and she tells him she wants to throw a company party, to welcome Wayne back, and introduce his wife, Ellie. They both reluctantly agree
The next day at work, Ellie tells Sophie about how Wayne bought her father's house. Sophie thinks that Wayne might be interested in her. Ellie disputes this, saying that Wayne is just being nice. Nervous about this thought, Ellie changes the subject, inviting Sophie to the party on Saturday. Amanda enters and complains that Ellie missed work the day before. Ellie tries to explain that she was at her father's funeral, but Amanda claims she doesn't care about that, and tells Ellie if she doesn't get an interview with Wayne Lyons, she will fire Ellie.
Sophie comes to Wayne's home to pick Ellie up to go shopping. Before they can leave, however, Wayne tells them he can arrange for a stylist to come to them, so they don't have to go out. Sophie, star struck by Wayne, starts to ramble about him, and how Amanda, their boss, is obsessed with him. As Wayne and Joey leave, Sophie and Joey clearly check each other out.
Outside, Joey asks if Wayne has told Ellie about his legs yet. He says he hasn't, as he wants to take care of his Uncle Richard, the man running Lyon's Corp, during his coma, and the one he suspects to be responsible for his accident. He then stands up, revealing that his paralysis has been an act. While they are out dealing with business, the stylist, Mr Lee helps the girls pick out some clothes for the party. Ellie shows a whole bunch of dresses, which Sophie disapproves of before finding a gold cocktail dress. The girls take some selfies before Wayne arrives to collect them. Wayne is clearly attracted to his wife when she turns around to greet him.
At the party, Ellie comments to Wayne that she thinks Joey and Sophie might be flirting. Then she notices Roger arrives, with Sascha. Wayne asks if she used to date him, and she asks him not to remind her. She realises that the only way Wayne could have known about Roger was if he could hear her while he was unconscious. She empathises with him, thinking it must have been a nightmare. They are interrupted by Richard, who patronises Wayne, telling him he should relax and recover. He claims that the company is in good hands under his control. Wayne tells Richard that he plans to investigate the accident more, and that he plans to question the driver's family. While they are talking, Joey sneaks into Richard's car and plants a listening device.
While getting ready for bed, Ellie decides she is going to ask if Wayne thinks his uncle is responsible for his accident. While in the kitchen, she reaches for a glass, not realising Wayne is behind her and she trips and falls into his lap. When she tries to stand, however, he pulls her back and kisses her. Joey brings a recording to Wayne, and they listen as he informs someone that Wayne is suspicious and that they need to take care of the wife and kids. Worried about their safety, Wayne tells Joey to make sure they are moved. Joey tells Wayne that Sophie told him about Amanda and threatens to fire her if she doesn't get an interview with Wayne.
At the magazine, Amanda again confronts Ellie about the interview. Ellie tries to tell Amanda that they probably won't be able to get an interview. Amanda accuses her of being incompetent. Ellie loses her temper and yells at Amanda for being such a bad boss. She quits and Amanda screams at her to get out. Wayne enters and reveals that he just bought the magazine, and that Amanda is the one who is fired. Ellie tells Wayne not to fight her battles for her. He tells her that they're married, and wants to know why she didn't come to him. She didn't want to put any pressure on him, and that their marriage was just pretend. He takes her hand and tells her that he's changed his mind about that. He confesses he has feelings for her, and kisses her again. She shyly admits that she has feelings for him too. Joey interrupts them with further recordings from the device in Richard's car.
It is revealed that Richard and Bethany have been working together, to try and get the prototype from her late husband. Bethany confesses that she killed Aaron, and that Wayne is definitely responsible for Wayne's accident. Bethany wonders where the prototype is. She searched the house and the hospital but didn't find it. Bethany reveals that she placed software in Ellie's computer that would reveal if the prototype turned on.
With shock, Ellie realises that her father was murdered by her step-mother. Wayne comforts her, then reveals that he was in partnership with Aaron, providing the funding for the prototype. Aaron had just had a breakthrough and Wayne was on his way to see Aaron when he had the accident. The prototype is worth billions, and Wayne is very eager to find it before his uncle can. Ellie confesses that she has it. In her room, Ellie opens her teddy bear to reveal the prototype and gives it to Wayne. He passes it onto Joey. Ellie wonders if their plan will work and Wayne reveals the truth; that he isn't paralysed. He tells her he's been wanting to get out the chair and make Ellie his. They embrace passionately before falling into the bed together.
The next morning, Ellie awakes to find a note from Wayne on the bed beside her, wishing her luck with her side of things. Sophie and Ellie return to her father's house, where Bethany is still living despite being asked to move. Bethany claims that her new place is under renovations and she is only staying in the house for a few more days. In Ellie's bedroom, Sophie and Ellie make a show of searching for something, which Bethany listens outside. They manage to fool her into thinking that they found the prototype and leave together. Bethany makes a call to monitor Ellie's computer. Together, Wayne and Ellie plug the prototype into her computer. Wayne tells Ellie that Aaron was a genius and how important his work is, how revolutionary and that they need to ensure that his legacy lives on.
Richard and Bethany plot to steal the prototype. Richard tells her about the party, and invites Bethany to join him. He then calls Wayne to tell him that Roger and Sascha are getting engaged, so he plans to bring Bethany as his plus one, because they are family now. Wayne and Ellie realise that their plan has worked. Ellie goes to shower and is moisturising her face when Wayne grabs her from behind. He tells her that they are married so they should share a room. She reminds him that he once told her she wasn't welcome to share. He confesses that it was an instant regret, and that he changes his mind a lot around her, because he loves her.
The next day, Wayne, Ellie, Joey and Sophie install cameras and listening devices around the office and hide a fake prototype in a drawer.
On the night of the party, Richard and Bethany arrive together. While getting ready, Ellie gives herself a pep talk, before joining Wayne, who gives her an appreciative look when he sees her. While people mingle at the party, Bethany drugs a glass of champagne, which she then hands to Ellie. Wayne, who saw the glass being drugged motions to Ellie not to drink it, and while Sophie causes a distraction, Joey passes Ellie another glass. They toast Roger and Sascha and drink. Immediately, Ellie feigns dizziness, while Wayne plays a concerned husband. Richard and Bethany offer to take her upstairs, where they place her on the bed. As soon as they leave her there, she stirs and sends a text to Wayne. While they search the office for the prototype, Ellie listens at the door. Once Bethany has found the prototype, Ellie confronts them about murdering her father. She is soon joined by Wayne who tricks his uncle into confessing everything. He offers to step down as CEO, but Ellie tells him that they want all the shares. When they realise that they've been set up, Richard tries to attack Ellie, but Wayne stands up to protect her, revealing at last to his uncle that he was feigning being unable to walk. Joey enters and tells them the police are one the way.and that everything they had said was being recorded.
Both Bethany and Richard are taken away in handcuffs. Ellie tells Bethany she plans to make sure her step-mother rots in prison. Bethany claims that Aaron never loved her, and that he deserved to die. As the police lead Bethany away, Sascha asks what is going on and Ellie tells her that she is going to prison for killing their father.
Wayne reveals to Ellie that he was afraid that his mother would side with her brother, but that she was on his side. Ellie, not surprised that Barbara would stand by her son, tells him Barbara loves him. Together, Wayne and Ellie hold a press conference about the prototype. Afterwards, Wayne tells her how proud he is of her. She asks him where they go now, and Wayne tells her they can go anywhere.
