Yes, there is a new sequel to the 2018 film “A Simple Favor” (see below) and yes, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are back for another round of murderous fun.

Charlize Theron has thrown herself into several big action blockbuster movies in the last decade, including several turns in the Fast & Furious saga, and her Netflix franchise, The Old Guard. However, she made an appearance during Netflix’s Upfronts event sporting an injury sustained while working on her newest action thriller, Apex, which sees her teaming up with Carry-On star, Taron Egerton.

While it is hard to imagine Theron being able to outdo some of her previous thrillers in terms of action set-pieces, as Apex focuses on "a woman trying to rediscover herself only to be hunted by a ruthless and unforgiving human predator,” and takes place among plenty of precarious-looking mountains, it seems that she found a way to do just that, even if it meant risking her life – Tom Cruise style. Marvel’s latest superhero flick, Thunderbolts* has slowed down its pace at the global box office but still manages to go steady. As the film enters its second week, all eyes are on the possible milestones that the Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan starrer can tick off in the coming days. Two of the stylishly violent spy comedies in the Kingsman franchise are finding new life on Hulu, over ten years since the first film made its debut. The movies are based on the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic book series of the same name.

FlixPatrol reports that two Kingsman movies are charting high on the Top Movies on Hulu worldwide list for May 14, 2025. The Secret Service is currently #3 on the charts, with its sequel, The Golden Circle, taking the #2 spot. The only movie performing better than the Kingsman franchise on Hulu right now is Summer of 69, the newly-released Hulu original starring Chloe Fineman and Sam Morelos.

Thunderbolts* is halfway through its second week in theaters, and while things are slowing down a bit more than anticipated at the box office, the film recently passed an iconic spy thriller. After a solid Monday that saw Thunderbolts* haul in $2.6 million at the domestic box office, the film now sits at a global cumulative haul of $273 million, with $130 million coming from the U.S. and $143 million from international markets. This $130 million domestic total is enough to push Thunderbolts* past Kingsman: The Secret Service, which finished its theatrical run with $128 million domestically. The murder mystery genre has always been popular, but in recent years, interest has skyrocketed after films like Knives Out, the new Agatha Christie adaptations Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, as well as the series Only Murders in the Building. Netflix is continuing this trend with a new murder mystery film, The Thursday Murder Club.

The upcoming film will have Harry Potter director Chris Columbus at the helm, and is based on British TV host and producer Richard Osman's bestselling novel by the same name. With a star-studded cast, the film comes from Stephen Spielberg's production company Amblin, and has a script by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. The independent studio aims to disrupt conventional filmmaking by “embracing innovative technology, with a nod to tradition.” The partnership has already yielded tangible results, with two completed action films – which Vaugh and Ronaldo financed and produced together via Ur•Marv – and a third in active development, all part of the same series. Following his Oscar win for The King's Speech, Colin Firth did varied work during the 2010s, veering from comedy (Kingsman: The Secret Service) to children's movies (Mary Poppins Returns), but Firth also did a great deal of serious work, including a fine performance as a former prisoner of war in The Railway Man, and the 2017 period drama The Mercy. The film was a box office bomb, but Firth does powerful work as Donald Crowhurst, a weekend sailor who takes an audacious risk. And there's more than one reason why it's worth watching.

As Disney aficionados can tell you, the 1980s were a rough time for the company's animation department. They had a sizable hit in 1977 with "The Rescuers", but Disney just couldn't recapture the magic. The 1981 film "The Fox and the Hound" cost a hefty $12 million, but brought in only $14.2 million domestically, which was not horrible, but not great. Notoriously, the 1985 fantasy epic "The Black Cauldron" lost a bucket of money, made for $44 million (!), and earning only $21.3 million. "The Black Cauldron" was such a bomb, there was some buzz that Disney might shutter their animation department altogether.

At least Disney racked up a modest hit the following year with "The Great Mouse Detective," a $25 million hit from a $14 million budget. That film was a Sherlock Holmes story, but posited that Holmes' apartment was the home of an anthropomorphic mouse named Basil (Barrie Ingham), a clever creature that, in observing Holmes, became a star detective for mice.

The Beekeeper was one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2024. This action thriller stars Jason Statham as Adam Clay and made over $153 million on a budget of just $40 million. Many fans praised The Beekeeper for its incredible action sequences and strong story. Unsurprisingly, The Beekeeper 2 has already been confirmed, and I admittedly can't wait to see what's next for Statham's Adam Clay.

Unfortunately, The Beekeeper 2 is missing one crucial element from the original: David Ayer directed the original movie, but he won't be returning to helm the sequel because he's working on another film. Instead, Timo Tjahjanto will be taking over for Ayer, and while I'm excited to see what Tjahjanto does with the franchise, I'm worried Ayer's absence means we're missing out on one-half of what made the original so amazing.

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

It has been over two years since James Gunn announced his plans for Chapter 1 of the Dcu, Gods & Monsters. Audiences finally got to see those plans kick off with the debut of Creature Commandos, and the franchise is moving along nicely as Superman is set to open in theaters in July 2025, followed by previously announced projects like Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Clayface, Sgt.Rock and Dynamic Duo were announced after and have since been added to the slate of releases, showing a diverse line-up of projects and genres for the Dcu. Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.

It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

The highly anticipated ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie is set to bring the iconic characters of Mattel’s beloved franchise to life on the big screen. Directed by Travis Knight, this superhero film features an exciting cast, including Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Jared Leto as the villainous Skeletor.

Kingsman looked destined for greatness the moment its cast was unveiled. With the likes of Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, and Mark Hamill, joining the cast, it was anybody’s guess that the movie would have a field day.

It has been ten years since fans first stepped into the Kingsman tailor shop and the legendary spy film has only aged like fine wine since then. Sure, the CGI may not be great but the originality in its conception still holds. In an era of serious and gritty spy films, Mathew Vaughn’s fun and whacky Kingsman franchise was a breath of fresh air.

While Vaughn is not a fan of releasing deleted scenes, the filmmaker mentioned that the film The Secret Service had over forty minutes of extra footage in its first cut which he had to take out to make length. According to the original comic’s writer, one of those scenes involved a de-aged Michael Caine.

Hardy, as previously disclosed, will play Harry Da Souza, a professional conciliator on behalf of the Harrigan family, while Brosnan will portray Conrad Harrigan, the head of the Irish crime family based out of London for whom Harry works. Mirren will play Maeve Harrigan, Conrad’s wife and the Harrigan family matriarch.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is just months away from hitting the big screen and Marvel fans are already super excited about the film. The film will feature Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / The Thing.

Fans also learned that Galactus will be the main antagonist for the Marvel family in this film. The cosmic villain was earlier introduced in Fox’s Fantastic Four film and was criticized for being portrayed as a ‘cloud’. While fans have little idea about the magnitude of the villain, Ralph Ineson is confirmed to play the role in the film.

Strong will appear alongside previously announced leads Callum Turner and Briana Middleton in the show, which is based on the William Gibson novel of the same name. It was picked up to series at Apple in February 2024.

Per the official logline, the show follows “a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly (Middleton), a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

A co-production between Skydance Television, Anonymous Content and Apple Studios, Neuromancer is also produced by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment. Roland will serve as showrunner and Dillard is set to direct the pilot episode.
