Rowoon’s The Matchmakers Soars To All-Time High Viewership Ratings Ahead Of Finale Week!(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The popularity of K-dramas saw unprecedented growth this year, but do you know what else soared in 2023? It’s actor Rowoon’s fan following. While he already has an impressive resume with K-dramas like Extraordinary You (2019), She Would Never Know (2021), and Tomorrow (2022), the fame Destined With You brought him is unparalleled. Now, his popularity seems to have contributed to his ongoing drama, The Matchmakers, which is heading into its finale week with its all time-high viewership ratings.
Rowoon announced his exit in September from his boy group SF9 to focus on individual activities, including acting, and what followed was his rise as a true blue K-drama star. Notably, the singer continues to be the 9th member of SF9, extending his support to the other eight members throughout their musical journey.

Netflix has its A-game on when it comes to Korean dramas, as it releases a new fantastic show, or at least, an addicting one, on a weekly basis. Recently, we’ve had some gems like Doona, Castaway Diva, and A Time Called You that have been loved by audiences and critics alike. Now, it’s finally time for the highly anticipated Song Kang and Kim You-Jung-starring K-drama My Demon to have us on our knees begging for mercy. Alright, this is a very unserious statement, but everyone’s just so excited to be taken in by this girlboss-demon combination that we can’t help but imagine it’s going to be a super hit even if it manages to bring nothing new to the table. People are already screaming about the “face cards” these two very attractive actors are bringing to the show, which is reason enough to give it a go.

Netflix’s South Korean fantasy drama, Destined With You, has finally ended, and we’re happier than we expected. A lot about this show was quite frustrating, and at first, it started off really strong, making us super excited to watch it. Past the sixth episode, what seemed to be working for the show somehow evaporated. A lot of it is based on the cringy bits of a budding romance. Boring old-school plot lines, some very old-fashioned plot devices, and the whole past life situation just made this show kind of boring. It’s a shame because it boasts of a fantastic cast. The show’s conclusion is satisfactory, but the entire thing becomes quite forgettable at this point. Anyway, let’s jump into the finale of Destined With You.

We’ve come to the end of Destined With You, and we’d have expected things to be all rose-tinted right now, but it seems there are still some things that need to be fixed. Jung-Beom hasn’t been found, Na-Yeon hasn’t apologized, and even though Shin-Yu and Hong-Jo are “destined” to be together, there is still some resistance. Even after the curse has ended, these two don’t seem to be getting any rest. The show definitely feels a little bit dragged right now, and we wish it had been wrapped up cleanly rather than expanding on the past life so much. However, it cannot be denied that the chemistry between the two leads is impeccable, and that’s mostly the reason we continue watching.

The new episodes of Destined With You are clearly gearing us towards a happy ending. Episode 14 gives us a detailed look at everything that happened in her past life that led to Aeng-Cho dying at the hands of her love, Mu-Jin. In the present, Shin-Yu tries hard to get back with Hong-Ju, who is determined to stay away from him after what the old shaman told her. Strangely, this is the same shaman who told her that they were destined to be together, so what really goes on? Hong-Ju found out that it was she in her past life who cursed Shin-Yu’s family for eternity, and so now she is trying to stay away from them because that’s the only solution. Let’s see how that works out for her.

It’s filler week, and we finally get to see some romance between Shin-Yu and Hong-Jo. These two episodes are filled with swoon-worthy moments from start to (almost) finish. Of course, there’s a dramatic cliffhanger that Destined With You episode 12 ends on for us to wait in anticipation for next week’s episodes. In classic K-drama style, we can imagine that there will be a breakup, possibly someone almost dying, and then they’ll get back together at the end of the show. The happy ending we’ve been waiting for will come, but we need some patience. What really stands out about Destined With You is the self-aware K-drama jokes it pokes fun at. The cringe is presented in an obvious way, making it rather fun to watch.

Destined With You started off with a bang, but now that we’ve crossed over the midpoint, it feels a little bit below par. Although it seems classic K-drama plots are back and a lot of shows are using old formulas but rebranding them with some newness, we don’t know where Destined With You will take us. There are still six episodes remaining, and next week might well be the make-or-break point of the show. It seems there’s a trend toward having a past-life connection this year, and the most recent show with a similar concept was See You In My 19th Life. We’re hoping this show doesn’t go downhill from here because we can see that a lot of drama awaits us. At this point, it’s clear that Shin-Yu has accepted his love for Hong-Jo, but why and what has made him fall for her so hard?...

Ah, we’re at the midpoint of Destined With You, and the tropes are creeping in. There’s something mildly satisfying about knowing how a cutesy K-drama is going to proceed, but at the same time, after a point, it starts to get a little tiresome. Destined With You started off all rose-tinted glasses, but now there are some things that are starting to get a little bit annoying. Still, starring Rowoon and Jo Bo-Ah, there’s no way we’d leave this behind. Even with each episode running for over an hour and 10 minutes, it seems to have progressed quite slowly. Of course, we love the adorable stuff, but there are new elements getting added in here that seem quite unnecessary at this point. So, let’s quickly get into everything that happened in this week’s episodes of Destined With You.

2023 has brought a rekindling for K-drama lovers. Some of the shows we’ve got this year are very similar to those that came out back in 2013, but on the other hand, we also have some amazing new stuff that doesn’t fit any molds, but still impresses. Business Proposal, My Liberation Notes, King The Land, and Revenant are just a few of the many hit shows to come out this year, all easily available on Ott platforms. We were missing a modern fantasy on our list, though, and Destined With You is surely destined to take up that spot. At the end of Episode 4, Shin-Yu realized that the shaman told Hong-Jo that the two of them were destined for each other and their ties would never be severed. Will they accept this destiny easily?

Korean dramas like Destined With You are so amusing once you suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the ride. With each episode being about 70 minutes, you’d anticipate it could be a bit of a bore, but the first four episodes have proven that wrong and given us some cute moments to go back to. Is this going to be a fantastic show? We can’t tell just yet, but all we know is that it’s really easy to relax in the world of this fantasy romance. It may not be an epic, but it’s still got some epic dialogue, and Destined With You Episode 4 definitely sees Rowoon in his best form when he has to deliver the most cheesy dialogue with a straight face.

In the middle of the lockdown, somewhere, K-dramas had lost their way a little bit. A lot of old fans thought things were changing too much and too fast, so they lost interest. But at the same time, many new fans came on board thanks to the Ott Hallyu wave and superhits like Squid Game. Call it gatekeeping or call it bias, Og fans have a special place for dramas that came out between 2013 and 2016, and recently, that spark has returned. King The Land is a classic example, and now it seems Destined With You is joining the ranks. Fantastical like Goblin and ridiculous like My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho. Right now, all the ingredients seem just right to make us fall in love with this show, like the love spell that Hong-Jo has cast in this episode.

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
