- Kabir Rishi (Ajay Devgn), a chartered accountant, and his wife Jyoti (Jyothika) reside in Dehradun, Uttarakhand with their kids Janhvi (Janki Bodiwala) and Dhruv (Anngad Raaj). Janhvi is a teenager and has many male friends at school, which Kabir is irritated with. She wants to go on a trip to Ladakh with her friends. Kabir agrees if Janhvi shares her live location and also shares the names of all the friends she is going with. Dhruv is a budding music composer and loves stitching different sounds together on software to create music.
They are a normal, rich and happy family. On a vacation to their farmhouse at a remote hill station, they meet an enigmatic man, Vanraj Kashyap (R. Madhavan). At a Dhaba Kabir did not have change to order tea and Vanraj joined their table with 2 cups of tea and one for himself. Vanraj had already crossed paths with Kabir in the washroom, where Vanraj seemed to be talking to his daughter on the phone and looked like a family man. Vanraj wants to order food and Jahnvi offers to read him the menu. As they playfully have fun, Vanraj offers Janhvi a sweet treat, which he was carrying in a Tupperware small container. After eating a sweet treat Vanraj gives her, Janhvi obeys his every command like a puppet.
The family finishes lunch at the Dhaba and heads to their farmhouse. Before leaving, Vanraj gives Janhvi a packet of biscuits to eat just after she reaches the farmhouse, which she does. Vanraj arrives at their farmhouse, claiming that his phone's battery has died. Vanraj orders Janhvi to come with him to his home, but she cannot say yes. Vanraj orders her to play hard with Dhruv and she does, almost making Dhruv unconscious. Janhvi tells her parents that she is compelled to obey Vanraj's orders.
The family is unsettled by Vanraj's presence and Kabir asks him to leave. Janhvi, upon Vanraj's orders, prevents her father from kicking him out. Janhvi hits Kabir to stop him and her parents are stunned. Vanraj reveals that he has hypnotized her through black magic; she will obey every command he gives. Vanraj order Janhvi to jump in the pool and not come up until ordered further. The parents panic and ask what Vanraj wants. Vanraj asks the parents to give her to him, as he needs their permission to do so. Vanraj confiscates all their phones and destroys them. When they refuse, Vanraj cuts the phone lines and torments the family by dictating Janhvi to do strange and cruel things, such as hitting herself, hitting Kabir, eating dry tea leaves (even though she hates tea), and attacking her brother.
When police respond to a call from Jyoti's hidden cellphone, the family acts normal to prevent Janhvi from causing an explosion in the house. Vanraj had ordered Janhvi to sit on top of a cylinder leaking gas with a matchstick. She was to light the matchstick in case anything went wrong. Kabir claims that the calls were made by their son Dhruv as a prank. Kabir offers money in exchange for sparing them, but Vanraj sets the money on fire, declaring that he has no use for materialistic things; he reveals himself to be a demon who aims to control the world, believing himself to be as good as God. Vanraj then requests her to dance for him even after she gets dead tired post dancing for an hour. Vanraj then goes to sleep, instructing Janhvi to stab anyone who approaches. When her father tries to steal Vanraj's phone, Janhvi urinates in her shorts to stop him, so she does not have to stab him. Vanraj wakes up and becomes very disappointed at this and as a result he asks her to undress herself and change her clothes.
Having had enough and seeing Jhanvi naked, Kabir and Jyoti attack Vanraj. He orders Janhvi to laugh herself to death and reveals that even if he is killed, Janhvi will continue acting on his last order until her death. In the scuffle Janhvi had stabbed Kabir through his hand. This compels Kabir to let him go, but Vanraj instructs Janhvi to kill her brother. He survives her attempt, though grievously wounded when Jhanvi throws him from the terrace. Realizing their children might actually die, Kabir and Jyoti give him permission to take Janhvi. They repeat an oath narrated by Vanraj, offering Janhvi to her forever and ever.
Jyoti drives Dhruv to the hospital while, unbeknownst to Vanraj, Kabir trails him to his lair, having shared the location of Vanraj's cellphone earlier with the guard of their farmhouse. Kabir goes to the guard's house and picks up his cellphone and uses it to track Vanraj's location. It is revealed that Vanraj has kept 108 other girls similarly hypnotized. With Janhvi as the last addition, he prepares to sacrifice them. This will complete the ritual for him to acquire the power to control anyone at will, as he believes humans do not deserve free will. Vanraj has lit a large pyre in which he will burn the girls by making them jump into the fire pit and achieve infinite power.
Kabir reaches Vanraj's lair after fighting the hypnotized guards posted by him outside. Kabir is still captured ad thrown in front of Vanraj. Kabir cuts Vanraj's tongue off with the knife embedded in his palm. When the girls try to kill him, he plays an edited recording of Vanraj's voice, in which he declares their freedom. Earlier, Kabir had taken the home's security camera recording of Vanraj speaking to Janhvi, then spliced his words together to make it seem like Vanraj is ordering the girls to go back to normal. Thus, the girls are freed from his control.
As Kabir and his family recuperate at the hospital, Vanraj's hostages are safely returned to their homes by the police who inform Kabir that Vanraj has gone missing.
A year later, Kabir is seen going down into an isolated chamber, where he has, in fact, held Vanraj captive. He mocks Vanraj, who can no longer speak, for wanting power and states that true power comes from parents, who can go to any extent to protect their children. Kabir feeds Vanraj dead rats and tea leaves. He declares that this is hell now and he is Vanraj's devil. He then tells Vanraj that they will meet again the next day and leaves while Vanraj continues to suffer.
