We were sad to hear that veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr, who got his acting start in Broadway productions back in 1950s (including Take a Giant Step and a 1959 production of A Raisin in the Sun where he shared the stage with Sidney Poitier), had passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in this, and became the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award in that category in the process. Next to R. Lee Ermey...

Stephen King is no stranger to murderous cars. From Christine and From a Buick 8 to the malevolent Goblin truck haunting the roads of Maximum Overdrive, the master of horror knows his way around gory gear shifts, sinister steering wheels, and dangerous drivers. In 2014, he released Mr. Mercedes, a crime novel pitting Bill Hodges, a retired detective, against Brady Hartsfield, a criminal mastermind disguised as the ice cream man. Both survive the novel’s explosive conclusion, though Brady is left in a vegetative state. After a brief detour into the world of rare publications with the 2015 sequel Finders Keepers, King catches up with the disabled criminal and his newfound psychic powers. End of Watch sees Hodges once again match wits with his old nemesis aided by partners Holly and Jerome.
Hosts Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Rachel Reeves, and Ashley Casseday hop back into the blood-soaked Mercedes to conclude their coverage of this confounding trilogy.

Almost every Stephen King novel (or novella) is a page-turner. The author has experimented with varying styles over the years: sometimes, horror has taken a backseat, operating like an ominous shadow lurking amid the pages, and at other times, his stories have felt akin to peering into the abyss. Then there are works centered on crime, notably the Bill Hodges trilogy, which includes the brilliant, engrossing "Finders Keepers." And then there are masterful entries that defy neat genres, like "Revival." When it comes to King's "The Outsider," the basic beats of the grisly tale already feel like a compelling crime saga with the author's signature flourishes. Once the police stumble upon the heavily mutilated corpse of young Frankie Peterson in Flint City, Oklahoma, it prompts the arrest of baseball youth coach Terry Maitland — publicly known as an easygoing family man — whom the town turns against overnight.

In 2018, the second season of David E. Kelley’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes aired once again on the Audience Network. Instead of adapting the second book in the true crime novel franchise — 2015’s Finders Keepers — the show’s sophomore season jumped ahead to the finale of the Mercedes trilogy, 2016’s End of Watch.
In this episode of The Losers’ Club, co-hosts Randall Colburn, Justin Gerber, and Dan Pfleegor gather to discuss the curious season and its efforts to find drama in holding patterns. After taking a quick (and bleak) detour with the macabre Revival, Stephen King returned to the characters he introduced in 2014’s Mr. Mercedes with 2015’s Finders Keepers. The second in a trilogy of novels about aging detective Bill Hodges, Finders Keepers follows a young boy whose discovery of a trunk filled with cash (and moleskin notebooks) puts him in the crosshairs of a psychopathic bookworm.
In this episode of The Losers’ Club, hosts Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Rachel Reeves, and Ashley Casseday slip on their pocket protectors and duct-taped specs to discuss King’s return to the obsessed fan archetype. Along the way, they touch on parasocial fandom, rare book dealers, butts, and whether the story even needs Hodges and co.

Stephen King loves Holly Gibney. First introduced in King's crime novel "Mr. Mercedes," book one of the Bill Hodges trilogy, she's returned in his work time and time again. She came back in the two other books in the trilogy: "Finders Keepers" and "End of Watch." Then she appeared in the novel "The Outsider" and the short story "If It Bleeds." Finally, she got a book of her own with "Holly," the newest novel King published (it came out in 2023; the ever-prolific King probably wrote four more novels in the time it will take me to finish this sentence).
Holly has been brought to the small screen twice already. She appeared in the "Mr. Mercedes" TV series, where she was played by Justine Lupe. Then she popped up again in the TV adaptation of "The Outsider," where Cynthia Erivo played the character. Now, Holly is headed to the small screen again,...
