Far from the Tree is not only a reference to the phrase about offspring that goes, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree..."
It is also a reference to Durden Godfrey's previous film, I'm Going To Kill Someone This Friday, where the focal element of the film was a large oak tree that a murder would take place under in the climax. Jayla Royal and Taurean Royal also starred in Far from the Tree. Taurean was a co-writer and producer as well.
Dr. Kimbrell, Tony's therapist in Far from the Tree, is a trademark of Durden Godfrey's films. In 2004's Turn, Dr. Kimbrell diagnoses the main character. In 2007's Tomorrow Mourning, Dr. Kimbrell cares for one of the main characters. In 2012's Man Alive, Durden Godfrey played Dr. Kimbrell, a villain. In 2017's Never Go Back, David McMahon played Dr. Kimbrell, who cared for the main character's wife until her passing.
The knife that Tony gives Morgan for her birthday is the same knife that Oliver (played by Daniel Miller) used in Durden Godfrey's previous film, Never Go Back. Daniel Miller also plays a small part in Far from the Tree.
Like in the movie, Jayla Royal (Morgan) is Taurean Royal's (Tony) daughter.
