Hilarious
kurleah17 April 2023
I'm loving this show, because it's so entertaining! Big fierce hunter didn't have a clue. Those with the biggest egos do so badly. When the self-professed indigenous fellow didn't recognise a non-native portuguese millipede, I was shouting at the screen. When he actually TASTED it, I nearly fell off my seat laughing. Mate, if it's visible and plentiful, it's because nothing eats it! Equally hilarious was the man chopping endlessly at the bark of a growing tree for one witchetty grub while standing amongst rotting fallen logs, which would be seething with them. And ignoring a butterfly right in front, which would be perfect trout bait. Can't wait for the next episode!

Seems like a lot of moaning and entitlement for day 2

Warning: Spoilers
There was certain few who gave up very easily. Cracking it over not being able to start a fire easily with wet timber and basics of not setting up a shelter properly makes we wonder if it's just an attention grab. I also realise there maybe far more to it than what was shown so not trying to be judgy on individual people.

I feel sorry for the young bloke who got extracted due to Covid. That's just bad luck not poor skill.

There's certainly some serious people who have prepared. Keen to see how they will fare.

I would have certainly up leveled my survival skills before entering a challenge like this. How to build a shelter for wind and rain, how to make and set fish an animal traps. Learnt about edible wild plants of Tasmania. (Probably would've been one of the 10 things I would've brought). No meat, wouldn't mean 'starving'.

Learned and practiced how to make a fire with sticks, no need to rely on man made items.

I'm also aware that I'm writing this review from my comfy chair in the warmth and dry of my home. Let's see how the rest of the series pans out.

Love Alone but sadly Australia series not up to par.
mereniagreen24 April 2024
Fan of Alone franchise!..... But the Australia version sadly doesn't cut it. It so far doesn't have great editing or candidates. Lots of random tap outs... and the editing esp in season 2 has them not showing any things like shelter building, net or tool building. It just skips ahead and suddenly youre 2 weeks in and see things they've made or found etc and no footage of it??? You barely even see them making fire, boiling water, eating vegetation.

Producers need to be improved greatly or changed. I don't watch it for reality show back stories, sob stories, missing families, tapping out early. I want to see survival!! Or just anything. They haven't even shown footage of them cutting up wood.... basic stuff. Ugh.

Contestants so far are Too Weak
glennmaillet3 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the North American version of Alone for the past 6 years, I've come to realize by watching Alone Australia that North Americans are tougher and more resilient than Australians. After 2 days, 3 contestants have tapped out and none have started to build permanent shelters nor have gathered any food. They just seem to sit there and complain about the elements while bragging about being "survivalists". It's entertaining and fun to watch as the land is quite unforgiving like Alone Vancouver was but seeing the novice skills of the contestants makes me question the search done by the Alone casting crew. Will watch til the end but us North Americans are just a different breed!

I have never rated a program in my life. But i felt compelled to warn others. Watching paint drying would be more entertaining. Failure. Complete failure. After watching multiple seasions of Alone for the past 4+ years, this is a compete disservice to a brand that I held in such high regard. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Take me back to Canada....

landscape is cool (graphically), but you'd better watch out for the ravid platypus that is going to sneak into your camp at night and cuddle you.

I can't help but keep watching in the hope that something diabolical happens. Like someone sneezes and poos their pants.

Perspective

A wide circle of my friends are addicted to this show and can't wait to see who lasts longest. I wonder if the commenters who attacked it for meeting "diversity" criteria have revised their opinion, given the early departure of some candidates and the back story reveals. I've watched the Norwegian versions and was struck by how inexperienced some of those people were so the wide range of skills in this show came as no surprise. The area chosen is harsh, but as most of the rest of Tasmania is regularly walked and hunted and fished (or blasted by winter winds), it makes sense! Well done SBS! Please keep going with Australian versions.

Of mice and men

Warning: Spoilers
Show is quite decent. Nowhere near as dangerous or harsh as what the American's had to endure.

Nonetheless...

I am not writing this review to talk about the merits of the show. I just wanted to express how utterly hilarious (and sad) it was to see the man the with the dreadlocks preach on about the aboriginal ancestors of the land, kneel down and say an aboriginal prayer , talk about being one with nature and insert every other cringeworthy first nations platitudes only to QUIT AFTER ONE NIGHT. Im the furthest from an outdoors person, hell, I haven't even gone camping before but to sign up to go on a survival show and not even last more than one night? Wow. I was embarrassed for him.

Not up to the others
twally-511623 May 2023
For me, what makes other Alone series compulsive viewing comes down to four key questions: How will the contestants cope with the isolation? How will they deal with the harsh conditions (especially shelter)? How will they deal with the dangerous predators (Hey Bear)? And how will they manage to feed themselves?

While Alone Australia has the first two it does not have the second two. There are no dangerous predators. When I heard one of the producers asked this question in a radio interview their answer was "Well, a Quoll can have a nasty bite" I almost fell off my chair laughing...I mean contestants are hardly going to kept awake in fear as rabid Quolls rage through their campsite at night are they.

But I think the biggest drawback is that they have been dropped in a place with almost no food and then told they are virtually not allowed any way of getting food. No bows and arrows (like in other series) traps are so rigidly restricted by the shows rules that they will be almost useless, the list of allowable animals to eat is tiny compared to those they are not allowed to and they cannot set gill nets or even overnight fishing lines.

Save yourself time and watch one of the other series where the contestents are tested on their ability to survive, not their ability to last the longest without food.

Thoroughly enjoyed
jellycupman2 June 2023
I do need to say that it's the first time I've watched any season. But I felt all the lows and all the highs. I was encapsulated by each episode. They really chose the harshest of location and I think it came down to luck with who wins. Yes at times it gets deep and depressing, I guess my own personal distresses got brought out and I connected unexpectedly. The highs then brought out the joy on the other end. I guess Australia's harsh laws and regulations make survival difficult. I look forward to future seasons where others will hopefully learn a good lesson on where to focus their energy to survive longest.

More about diversity quotas than survival
rhood-657644 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
2 episodes in and the main two people featured have already quit after only 24 hours, a single night outside. Not surprising when one of them was more concerned about talking about indigenous practices and emotions than trying to survive and win the competition, only to cry and leave the daybafter he got there. The other contestant, while a character and enjoyable to watch, was a lesbian grandma with a partly indigenous background. Obviously none of that is an issue but when she leaves after 24 hours as well you can't help but think its just another box ticking exercise when picking contestants (when apparently there were over 1000 entries).

Survival Experts Not
michaelwelsh-1327631 October 2023
Great show but disclaimer at the start of show is rubbish. Some of the contestants are experienced, several had little experience at all....day 2 tap outs due to incompetence...very dangerous allowing them to compete... Other than this, the Alone concept is truly a reality show in the truest sense. This Australian version is as good as the original they just needed to cast better and make it more competetive. Tas mania was a great start and the Western side is one of the most isolated parts of the Aussie wilderness. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of season 1 unfolds and then seeing season 2...

The two stars are for the superb Tasmanian wilderness
qmaclaine10 April 2023
Given that this show will be shown internationally and be seen as representative of Australians and Australian values, I'm appalled at the cellar-dweller quality of the participants. They could reasonably be collectively described as semi-literate, self-deluded, cliche-driven inadequates, spruiking attention-seeking twaddle about love of country and respect for the bush with limited stoicism or true respect (for themselves or their surroundings). And as for the potty-mouthed winger who describes herself as a "Proud.... Woman" and a "Secondary teacher", it's appalling to think of the lessons learnt by her students when they see her spectacular vacuousness and lack of capacity. As a nation, we're far more than this. A horrible betrayal of our image by the producers.

Embarrassing for the world stage
agwilson-942-91593519 April 2023
Being an outdoor enthusiast and having watched and loved every season of Alone, I was so excited about the prospect of an Aussie version. My excitement was short lived however, as other than the graphics and editing format being the same as the US show that's where the similarities stop.

If only the producers hadn't focused on ticking all their diversity boxes and followed the successful format of having experienced survivalists this series could have been watchable. Instead, it's a tedious and downright embarrassing offering of self indulgent, agenda pushing, foul mouthed and ill-prepared people hoping for their 15 minutes of fame.

So disappointed apart from Gina.
lterryblume17 May 2023
There was so much anticipation about Alone in Tasmania, Australia. I've watched in awe every season of Alone. I live in Tassie and love this place.

Firstly I am questioning why the participants were taken to such a godforsaken, ugly place when there are so many other options in Tassie. It made Tassie look horrendous.

The chosen participants seemed chosen for political correctness versus there skill set. This explains why so many dropped out so early. This doesn't make for good viewing on the Global scale. Shame on the production team I guess a Nd for the choices they made in attempt to be contemporary.

With all that said my money is on Gina 🤞.

Embarrassing
Bacterium16 May 2023
The "Alone" concept has been around for years. There have been ten series of the show that all of the contestants in this show have had the opportunity to watch. The contestants knew what was in store ... and the knew that they were never even going to be mauled by a bear or a moose (unlike the original show from America). So why did they all quit so quickly? These jokers were walking around saying they were concerned by sounds made by wallabies. If they spent a tiny fraction of the time they spent reciting Aboriginal phrases (they had no idea about what they actually meant) on basic bush walking skills they would've all survived instead of being a bunch of pathetic quitters. Made me embarrassed to be a Tasmanian.

TERRIBLE SHOW
ivagayle25 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My family has watched ALONE every season.

This Alone Australia is the worst so far!

4 people out the first 3 days?

No food ANYWHERE.

No Bows, or guns?

No shelters... ?????

Who wants to watch rain, people fishing in a swamp, mud, and more rain?

Tasmania looks like DEATH VALLEY in a swamp.

Rotting trees, no food, mud and rain.

We thought the producers "scouted" the areas to make sure it has enough resources to sustain a person.

Obviously NOT.

The main thing the contestants talk about is STARVATION!!!!

The woman dry heaving bc she actually had food was rough too watch. She was upset be she didn't want to EAT an eel? Why was she on this show???

FAIL.

PASS ON THIS SHOW.

Alone Australia is fake!
mike_moor10 July 2023
It felt more like a 'political correctness' propaganda piece. This is advertised as a survivalist show. Isn't it a show where the best survivalists compete against each other? Instead, it seems they put certain groups of people in the show regardless of survival skills.

Now there is the issue about endangered species. You can't put survivalists in a situation where they cannot properly gather food. Totally ridiculous that survivalists are not allowed to trap animals properly because they might kill an endangered animal. You are shooting the show in the wrong location mate! The name 'Starvation Australia' would better describe the show instead of 'Alone Australia'.

Fast forward
XRPtheone-377534 May 2023
Well, after watching all Alone episodes I'm pretty embarrassed and so disappointed. I mean what a bunch of ungrateful and unskilled "expert survivalists". All the Producers have done is line up 10 people they thought were interesting, but guess what, we don't watch this show to listen to their problems. I thought it show cases people's extraordinary skills living in the wild right?. Building shelters, hunting and fishing and over coming extreme weather etc. Doing all the things "we" as non experts only fantasize about. All I can do is fast forward to bits that appear to be interesting which makes the show about 15 minutes for me. Well done Producers.

Don't see improvement coming
spirit_sydney17 April 2023
The location after four episodes is awful. They should have been put near the ocean. They seem to have been placed on a lake that has been formed from a dam. They are restricted in ways they can hunt. If there is a next season hopefully they put them in the middle of Australia in a dry area. Give us a different set of survival skills from the other Alone series. Even get a couple of good contestants from the other Alone series to see how they survive in a arid location. The contestants on the first season of Alone Australia are not very likeable. Very little in the way of useful survival skills after four episodes. The editors so far have put too much talking and not enough survival.

Latte sippin action, keep the blinkers on
hohler-0412313 April 2023
I'm a big fan of the Alone series but this series is such a shame. This is a survival show but this season doesn't showcase the strength and survival skills that I know many people possess in Australia. Ticking 'politically correct' boxes and putting people in there just to preach their agenda hasn't got anything to do with survival and doesn't showcase a fair representation of OUR country. When a bloke eats a Portuguese millipede thats when I knew this series is just a joke. More of a comedy then anything. The American series is the best and they choose people purely on their survival talent not on race or view points. All the anticipation and hype but only disappointment.

Lacking Masculinity
Justinpren22 April 2023
As an Aussie I was really looking forward to alone in my home country. I looked forward to watching Australian wilderness experts survive in non arctic climates, in a wilderness without the threat of being eaten by anything.

Sadly this show lacks aspects of level headedness, resilience, survival knowledge and grit, that makes the American version such a breath of fresh air to reality TV. The AU version replaces these with an excess of: whinging, swearing for no good reason, fixation on minute issues, unhealthy coping mechanisms and spinelessness.

As others have mentioned SBS did a huge blunder from the get go by choosing seriously dissapointing contestants. Obvious red flags that appear very early on in the show are contests with the following backgrounds: "meditation leader", "earth mother", "primitive huntress".

Look some people would enjoy this show, there's an ecologist/wildlife biologist, a 22 year old farmer, several defence veterans - some parts of it are really interesting. Overall though SBS has gone for diversity over anything else and it sadly kills the show episode by episode.

A lost opportunity
Joe_Benedict16 June 2023
I'm Australian and watched this embarrassing travesty to the bitter end. For some reason, the producers set out to recruit virtue signalling, "look at me" diversity picks rather than actual survival experts. The lack of stoicism shown by some of the early tap outs is cringe worthy.

A tedious check-list of moaning minority groups is represented. The result is a group of mostly foul-mouthed, inarticulate contestants who are unrepresentative of Australians in their outlook on life and likeability. The exception is Gina who stood head and shoulders above the rest. She is such an interesting, thoughtful and talented person. And endearingly quirky!

Having watched seasons 1 to 3 of the American series, the contrast is striking. Yes, it's possible to demonstrate skill and stoicism while having good natured, intelligent conversations with the camera, drawing upon interesting anecdotes and experiences from your life. Even when there are deadly carnivores lurking in the forest (there are none in Tasmania).

Owed or Earnt
brenden335 April 2023
Contestants were allowed to bring 10 selected items to a remote part of Tasmania to test themselves surviving and be the last person remaining after a none specified time. Unfortunately many brought their hangups as extra baggage. Anyone born in Australia is a first nation person I believe but to hear expectations that because of generations 1, 2 or more ago they are different and should be winners on a survival show is unrealistic. We all are in this life boat Australia together and should help each other for our kids sake. So I have had my say! The show has potential, with plenty of hardships developing and interest.

O.M.G. What a downer
crusoemal4 May 2023
Difficult to find anything at all Alone-like in this series, except the shortage of real entertainment. In a word, embarrassing.

It is hard to understand how the selection process was handled, and to what criteria. Some of these participants seem to treat the experience like a stroll in bush, owing them easy passage. And getting unfairly vocal when they learn that it wont.

Too many tears in the first few days, usually takes a week or two.

Thanks to those who have highlighted the negatives, you have my total agreement.

Will there be an SBS series two? Hard to expect so given this very poor debut.

Very boring and difficult to understand
wittscabin-028013 September 2023
After watching my favorite show on TV , History Channels Alone, I was very disappointed with the Australia version!

The quality of participants is nowhere near the caliber of the men and women on Raindreer Lake. Will NOT finish the series.

I'm spoiled I guess with the Canadian version!

Three or four people tapped out in the first few days. Saw a couple fish being caught but they must be conserving their game. Wondering what were their qualifications to apply for the show?

Of course, adding a winter element separates the true survivalists from the adventurers.

I'm 75 and did my share of hunting, camping, hiking and making do in the wilderness. Wish I was young enough to attempt this challenge!
