Cold Wallet
One of the highlights of this year’s SXSW, Cutter Hodierne’s Cold Wallet is an edgy little thriller with deeply human characters and some great performances. It follows a group of people caught up in a cryptocurrency scheme who resolve to track down the man responsible and hold him hostage until he reveals the location of the cold wallet – the resource they need to recover their losses. They’re not the sharpest tools in the box, and have no real experience of how to do this kind of thing, so naturally events don’t go to plan, making the situation more and more dangerous for all involved.
“I developed the script with John Hibey, who I work with all the time, and he's a close friend and collaborator and a totally brilliant writer,” said Cutter when we met at the start of the festival. “I got swept up in the.

Whatever happened to the ABC talk show host Murray from The Last of Us? Did he get a fungal infection that turned him into a zombie? Granted, he was a character well before the timeline of the show, but still, ya know, flashbacks. Plus, Murray was played by Silicon Valley star Josh Brener.
In an early episode of The Last of Us, Murray jokes about Dr. Neuman’s claims that a fungus could wipe out mankind. Dr. Neuman emphasized there would be a loss of control by mankind. Murray then in hysterical fashion after listening solemnly, called for a commercial break.
We asked Brener if he was being brought back for Last of Us at our SXSW studio; the actor in Austin, TX for the world premiere of the crypto currency feature thriller, Cold Wallet.
“This is the mind of Craig Mazin!” said the actor about the series co-creator.

In the high-stakes world of digital currency, Cold Wallet takes us on a comedic heist journey that tries to mine more laughs than crypto, but occasionally finds itself lost in the blockchain of its own storyline. The semi-true tale spins a narrative around Billy (Raul Castillo), a father whose financial downfall leads him to hatch a plot alongside hacker extraordinaire Eva (Melonie Diaz) and good-vibes-only martial arts instructor Dom (Tony Cavalero), to crack into the cold wallet of supposedly deceased crypto CEO, Charles Hegel (Josh Brener). Their plan? Kidnap Hegel, force him to give up his trillion-dollar cold wallet, and redistribute that wealth like modern-day Robin Hoods to everyone he swindled with his “Tulip” coin.
Crypto (from an outside observer) looks overly complicated and managing a “Cold Wallet” seems about as easy as acquiring codes to launch nuclear weapons. The Cold Wallets requires several passcode or key phrases to access...

Steven Soderbergh is turning up the heat on cryptocurrency scams in thriller “Cold Wallet.”
Soderbergh officially presents the feature, directed by Cutter Hodierne (“Fishing Without Nets”). “Cold Wallet” is set to premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 8 as part of the Narrative Spotlight section; the film is among IndieWire’s must-see picks for the festival.
“This smart, spiky, off-center take on the vigilante genre really kept me engrossed in a how-much-crazier-is-this-going-to-get way, which I love,” Soderbergh said in a press statement after “Cold Wallet” won the Decentralized Pictures and Soderbergh’s Andrews/Bernard Award.
The official synopsis reads: “After losing everything in a cryptocurrency scam, a ragtag team of vigilante Redditors attempt to kidnap the kingpin who screwed them over. But when the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game.”
