We’re fast approaching the end of the Emmy eligibility window, which means there are few new shows of note and many ongoing series angling for our attention as they make their final turns and head down the homestretch.
Sunday marks the penultimate episode of HBO’s “Succession,” and while it’s hard to believe the two-time Emmy winner for Best Drama Series could manage to top itself after already delivering Logan’s (Brian Cox) death, Roman’s (Kieran Culkin) dramatic mountaintop confrontation, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Shiv’s (Sarah Snook) balcony blowout and the Great Wasabi and Lemon Lacroix Incident of 2023, “Church and State” (airing at 9/8c on HBO and HBO Max) just might do it.
Emotions are running high at Logan’s funeral, especially in the wake of the revelation that Shiv has been lying to her brothers and working with Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). And when you couple the fresh,...

In 2023, Natalie Portman is one of the biggest stars on the planet. However, back in the mid-‘90s, she was a pre-teen actress looking for her first major break. That came in the film, “Léon: The Professional.” However, nearly 30 years after the release of that film, which was celebrated upon its release, Portman has “complicated” feelings about that movie and the filmmaker involved.

In a scene late in Natalie Portman’s new movie, May December, she’s talking with the faintest lisp, somehow playing a moment as both fragile and predatory. Portman’s performance in the scene is striking not just for how uncomfortable it is, but because it’s an uncanny re-creation of a character that Julianne Moore has been playing for the entire movie up to that point. In the drama from director Todd Haynes, which will premiere in competition May 20 at Cannes, Portman is Elizabeth, an actress doing research to play Gracie (Moore), a woman at the center of a decades-old tabloid scandal, married to a man (Riverdale‘s Charles Melton) 23 years younger than she is. May December is an opportunity for the star of dark films like Black Swan and Léon: The Professional to dig into an old obsession.

Natalie Portman is not only a soccer fan and co-owner of a women’s soccer team, she’s also a proud soccer mom.
Portman made that clear while attending the premiere of “Angel City”, a three-part HBO docuseries chronicling the first year of L.A.’s Angel City Football, which she co-founded in 2020 and played its first season last year.
“I mean, we definitely come to a lot of the City games,” Portman told People of the team, which competes in the National Women’s Soccer League.
“And then also, my son is a ferocious soccer player, so I’m going back and forth to practice,” she added, referencing her 11-year-old son Aleph, whom she shares with husband Benjamin Millepied.
“I’m definitely a soccer mom,” she proudly declared.

While soccer has yet to fully be embraced by American culture, that hasn’t stopped famous Hollywood figures from going out there and literally investing in the sport… and turning it into a docuseries. Over on FX, there’s “Welcome to Wrexham,” which follows the aftermath of American Rob McElhenney and his business partner Ryan Reynolds as they purchase a UK soccer team and try to make it big.

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.

Natalie Portman was ready to make fun of herself when she appeared Tuesday on “The Late Late Show.” In seven minutes flat, Portman and James Corden cycled through some of the A-list star’s biggest roles. And no matter what Corden curve ball threw at her, Portman was prepared.
The segment started with Corden trying out his best moody Zach Braff impression as he reenacted “Garden State.” But it quickly became Portman’s show the second she donned Queen Amidala’s iconic wig from the “Star Wars” prequels. In rapid succession, Portman was decapitated (“The Other Boleyn Girl”), had her head shaved (“V for Vendetta”), was hit by a car (“Closer”), attacked Corden-as-Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”), took control of the legendary Mjölnir (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) and beat up some aliens (“Mars Attacks!”). Overall, the clip covered 21 of Portman’s films. Not bad for seven minutes.
